side. but tonight, tottenham are determined to make this place really feel like home. that could make the difference. a first fight in america for anthonyjoshua — the venue, madison square garden — his opponent, an unbeaten new yorker, known as big baby. and with the cricket world cup and home ashes on the horizon — we'll ask what england can learn from their series defeat in the west indies. also coming up in the programme: a year ago, a clash of heads ended his playing career — now former hull city midfielder ryan mason calls for a ban on young footballers heading the ball: in my head, i'm still a footballer. i still thinking about playing. i still imagine myself out there. hello and welcome to sportsday.
6:32 pm
good evening — we start at wembley where spurs are beginning their quest for a place in the quarterfinals of the champions league. bundesliga leaders borussia dortmund have made the journey to london for tonight's first leg, and our sports correspondent joe wilson is there. a sobering experience for manchester united against psg last night. how are spurs fans feeling ahead of this one? i think they are confident. they are optimistic. i think there is a general sense with tottenham hotspur right now and it's likely been led by their manager. they are a team which is suffering from certain degrees of adversity but they are using it in their favour. fixture lists have not been kind to them. injury list have not been kind, they don't have a home ground. everyone is talking about how brilliant liverpool and manchester city have
6:33 pm
been, but when it comes to the premier league, the champions league, i think tottenham are in acts to an end. they know they can beat borussia dortmund. when we look at the group stage of the champions league, let's not forget that everybody had written spurs of after three games but here they are. what could be crucial this evening, fans are streaming and, if they can create an atmosphere here this evening, if they can really make this feel like a home, we know it is not their proper home but if it can feel like that for 90 minutes, that can make the difference. a really big challenge from the german team. thanks in part to the english wonder kid. huge anticipation to see him backin kid. huge anticipation to see him back in action for his club team —— jaden sancho. back in action for his club team —— jaden sancho. there is a sense of excitement about that. jaden sancho started his youth career, not many
6:34 pm
miles away from her in watford. i think he's got ten goals in eight assists or the other way round. he is still young. borussia dortmund are missing several of the established senior players. the spurs team, there is no dele alli or a hurricane. tottenham hope they will be back for the second leg. but christian eriksen, a man who was really done it all. i'll put it see this way, who would you rather have in yourteam this way, who would you rather have in your team tonight? jaden sancho 01’ in your team tonight? jaden sancho or experienced christian eriksen? totte n ha m or experienced christian eriksen? tottenha m wa nt to or experienced christian eriksen? tottenham want to avoid the fate of manchester united. they still need to be in this tie at the end of the first leg. thank you. we'll be back with you over the course of the evening. horse racing has re—started in the uk after a six day suspension. an outbreak of equine flu led to a shut—down that lasted 6 days, and there were concerns it may have affected the cheltenham festival next month.
6:35 pm
but racing authorities are satisfied that the risk is now contained. 0ur sports news correspondent richard conway has spent the day at plumpton, where runners were back on the course: backin back in business. that's right. everyone has packed up and gone home here. the horses are hitting the hay back at their stables but it was a good day. a successful event, a good crowd here in total. this is the beating heart beat of british racing, tracks like this where owners and trainers and jockeys make their living, week in and week out. a six—day suspension was acceptable to them in some cases, because at this time of year, you lose fixtures to bad weather. but there was anxiety, perhaps it would go on past six days and at that point, it would have started to cause serious issues
6:36 pm
economically for everyone who relies on racing for a living. i have been out and about today talking to people who have been here at the court and you are going to hit first from the need to protect animal welfare, why in this person was my view it was important. and you hear from a jockey. we are a huge industry and what it does show is horses are number—1 to us. also, the vaccines have been working. a lot of these horses that have had it which have been vaccinated, very small signs they are showing. it's a real bonus. horses coming in today, they are not at any extra risk of
6:37 pm
contracting the virus. i think it was the right thing to do for them. as jockeys we can cope. we was the right thing to do for them. asjockeys we can cope. we have was the right thing to do for them. as jockeys we can cope. we have a ten day break in the summer. so a six—day break is something we do in the summer. we have had one now and there is a good reason for it. there isa there is a good reason for it. there is a backlog of test results that need to be analysed. the british horseracing authority say they are mindful of that and they are trying to get everyone back up and running but the bio—security measures they have put in place that we have seen in action today and they are pleased that the swift action that they felt they have taken has allowed racing to recommence. thank you. anthonyjoshua has finally confirmed his next fight — and he'll be in action on us soil for the first time in his boxing career. madison square garden is the venue. the opponent? jarrell miller — an unbeaten new yorker known as "big baby" — who'll be taking part in his first world title fight. steve bunce is part of the bbc boxing team — why the name and what you know about him? he invents anything he wants. he will say he was a big baby when
6:38 pm
he was born and his eyes and a big old boy now. it'sjust he was born and his eyes and a big old boy now. it's just a fun nickname. a nickname i like, because i'm not sure i like killer and knocked out king and cyclone and names like that. big baby is fine. just what is a big man. if you have seen him on tv or in person, or miller is about four and a half stone heavier, he is a big old baby. josh well would probably be the favourites to win with his three world titles on the line against this guy who has never taken part in a world title fights before but it is not really fight people wanted to see. will he ever fight deontay wilder or tyson fury, dillian whyte? ? two of those guys are going to fight each other and according to the guy who promotes anthonyjoshua who will be promoting this fight in madison square garden, dillian whyte priced
6:39 pm
himself out of the marketplace. there were repeated offers and he would disagree with that and the terms of the fight but he has priced himself out, big baby says come to new york, i am a big fat guy, i like eating cheeseburgers, i took a lot of smack, we will have some fun and we will sell out madison square garden. it was an offerjoshua could not refuse. some of the fans will be upset. that is the business. if you ask for too much money, you miss the bus. who can turn down a good cheeseburger? thank you. jurgen klopp has been charged by the fa following comments he made in a post—match interview after liverpool 5 league game against west ham last week. he's accused of questioning the integrity of the match referee or implying bias. both manchester united and paris saint germain will both face disciplinary charges after their champions league last 16 tie at old trafford last night. united fans are accused
6:40 pm
of throwing things and staircases being blocked — while psg fans are said to have set off fireworks, thrown objects, caused damage and crowd disturbance. west brom's dwight gayle has been charged with "successful deception of a match official" in last night's draw with nottingham forest — its after this dive, which won a penalty in the 89th minute of the game, securing a point for west brom. he has til 6 o clock tomorrow to respond to the charge. west ham's declan rice has pledged his internationalfuture to england, having won three caps in friendlies for the republic of ireland. winning a competitive cap would have tied him to the country, and he says choosing england does not mean he's taking a call—up for granted. ronnie 0'sullivan is safely through to the third round of the welsh 0pen. he beat china's yuan sijun by four frames to two in cardiff. elsewhere, the masters championjudd trump is out. he was beaten by wales duanejones. west indies fast bowler shannon gabriel will miss the first four 0dis against england — he's been banned for comments he made to captainjoe root during the third test in st lucia.
6:41 pm
root could be heard telling gabriel not to use the term "gay" as an insult. prize money in sport and the pay gap between men and women has been raised again today — this time in parliment. vicky foxcroft, the mp for lewisham, raised the debate about the prize money on offer in both the men's and women's fa cup. for advacing to the fourth round the men earn £180,000 but the women £2,000. foxcroft asked for the same to be given to both genders and prime minster theresa may hopes the football assoiation have heard of pa rliments dissapointment. as the president of the wargrave girl's football club, i am willing to commence all those girls and females who play football and i think members across this house have been concerned to hear of the disparity in the winning that she has raised with this house.
6:42 pm
0bviously has raised with this house. obviously this is a matter for the football authorities but i'm sure they will have heard the concern that has been expressed in this house about the current position. blackpool football club have been put into receivership by the high court — a move that will force owner 0wen 0yston to pay ex—director valeri belokon the £25 million he is owed. it could mean the club will be sold to a new owner, but league one blackpool could also be docked 12 points by the football league, as punishment for insolvency. christine sneddon is chair of the blackpool supporters trust — what does this mean? it's been a long fight to try and force the owner to pay this money to the ex director. do you think this provides you some light at the end of the tunnel that there will be a solution and blackpool can move forward as a club? absolutely. we have as fans, boycotting any game that would financially benefit the owners in an attempt to get rid of
6:43 pm
them. what this does now, receivership means the receivers will go in and run the club until new owners can be found. which is tremendous news for us as fans, it sounds unusual but that's the way it is and we are very happy about it. it can place you in some dire straits as far as the league is conserved. a dock of 12 point is huge. but the positive you are taking... it is the most important thing. in the bigger picture, we have to look at the long—term future of the club and it had no future with the current heads. the points deduction is that the afl african firms to the legal representatives that they have some discretion about it. they will use that that discussion, be desperately unfair to punish the club and the fans for the for the way the owners have run the club. thank you so much. england's test series
6:44 pm
against west indies ended in a 2—1 defeat that has ultimately asked more questions than it has answered they did at least finish with a consolation win in st lucia, beating the windies by 232 runs in the third test. mark wood's performance in the first innings was a real bright spot for england. he took five wickets and was bowling with the kind of pace that they've not had for a long time. but it's in the batting where the problems still lie and england have only one more test match before the ashes begin in august. the most pressing issues involve the top three batsmen keatonjennnings was dropped for the second test and could only manage an average of 15 runs this series. that means he'll probably be dropped again. especially considering the bowling attack that australia have at their disposal. the other two have done slightly better; rory burns had an average of 24 and did manage a half—century
6:45 pm
— something thatjoe denly also achieved, his average of 28 was the best of the three in the caribbean. so let's hear from the man who's shoes they're all hoping to fill. former captain alastair cook. he's been speaking to our cricket correspondent jonathan agnew they haven't absolutely nailed their best. there have been glimpses. rory burns is on six wickets. there are signs he looks mentally capable. i think he would have found it incredibly tough in terms of the step up from county cricket. and thenjoe in this game, that 69 he got. you will be kicking himself because he was 20—30 minutes away from 100 in terms of the way the game was panning out with the off—spinner is about to bowl. i think there have been glimpses of
6:46 pm
encouragement, but yes. they haven't scored... the white—ball game now becomes england's focus they have 5 one—day internationals and 3 t20's in the west indies starting next week, as well as 5 0di's against pakistan in may. then there's the small matter of the world cup in england and wales this summer. so as you can see although the ashes may be six months away, there is only one more test match against ireland at lord's for england to get their team ready. let's have a look at scotland. scotland women's boss shelley kerr says players leaving the country to play in england can only be a good thing for the national team, as they prepare for this summer's world cup in france. recently, seven players have left scotland to join teams
6:47 pm
in the wsl which hasn't helped the game domestically. but today kerr announced her squad for the algarve cup at the end of the month and believes their particpation in portugal will help them at the world cup: this is only the second time we've invited —— we've been invited. to give you an indication of the level of teams that are there, we are ranked ninth out of 12. there are some fantastic teams there and it is going to be tough. the opponents we have in canada and iceland, but it is one we are looking forward to. it isa it is a gain, another opportunity. canada ranked first, we are playing england in the first game who are ranked fourth. you have to play against the best teams to make sure
6:48 pm
our preparation is right. following his death yesterday, the tributes have continued to flood in for england's world cup winning goalkeeper gordon banks. he was probably most famous for this iconic save from the brazilian legend pele at the 1970 world cup, and today the three time world cup winner paid a special tribute, calling banks one of his best friends. might dear brazilian friends, many times we have to give some news that does not please everyone but imagine me who isjust does not please everyone but imagine me who is just one lost one of my best friends. despite being opposite in football, he was a goalkeeper and i was in football, he was a goalkeeper and iwasa in football, he was a goalkeeper and i was a striker, but unfortunately banks, one of the worlds best goalies has died. beyond being friends, we played in the same team, because gordon banks was a great person and this news makes all of us who love football, who likely good and nice people, it makes us very sad. so let's pray that his family and friends don't suffer too much and friends don't suffer too much and that god receives him with all
6:49 pm
of his life in heaven. a clash of heads on the pitch means ryan mason has 14 metal plates and 28 screws in his head. the injury meant he had to stop playing professional football for hull city. he's moved into coaching and works with tottenham's youngsters, and is calling for a ban on young footballers heading the ball. he says the dangers of concussion are underestimated. katie shanahan reports: ryan mason was in his prime. he had come through his ranks at tottenham andi come through his ranks at tottenham and ijust come through his ranks at tottenham and i just made come through his ranks at tottenham and ijust made his england debut. then a match at stamford bridge changed his life forever. then a match at stamford bridge changed his life foreverlj then a match at stamford bridge changed his life forever. i was playing for hull at the time and i headed the ball and unfortunately, for me, someone came through the back of me and i sustained quite a traumatic injury at the time. i've used this expression before, like a bomb going off in my head. the impact was so much. i've got a 14 metal plates in my head as 28 screws
6:50 pm
as well. it was a case of putting it all back together and then putting it back on and summing things back up. what happens to ryan has reopened a debate about the risks attached to heading the ball. in the us, it is banned for under 11, so does he think that should be the case here? personally, yes. in 20 yea rs' case here? personally, yes. in 20 years' time, the whole youth setup will be different. logic tells you that if you've got 7—8 year old heading a solid ball and his brain isn't fully developed, his bones aren't fully developed in his goal, that could be doing damage. some have accused football is not taking current dilemma concussions seriously with injured players left to play on. if there's any doubt about it, in my they should take the message and ultimately, the specialist i've seen and spoke to, you do get a whack on the head. there is a small
