10:45 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines at 11pm. facing calls from many within their party and elsewhere, to trigger a by the home secretary has revoked the british citizenship, election and allow the people of of the teenager shamima begum, who ran away to join their constituency to reelect them the islamic state group. or not, based on whatever platform they run on as a member of the independent group, not the labour the mp for enfield north, joan ryan, party. that members have already becomes the eighth to resign left labour and they said although from the labour party, joining the new independent they were elected as candidates, as group in parliament. themselves, and they show no sign of honda confirms it is shutting doing it. it will be interesting to its huge car plant in swindon, with the loss of 3,500 jobs. see come the next general election there's about 10—12 people from our whenever that is, how these mps fair little family, all working here. good friends that work here that especially like john ryan i know have just got married, had babies, just bought houses. and it'sjust like... whenever that is, how these mps fair you feel for these people. especially likejohn ryan where there is not a clear majority. and influential and revered. there is not a clear majority. and there is not a clear majority. and there is speculation about who else karl lagerfeld, a giant of the fashion world, has died. and speculation about conservatives, is there any other movement this he was 85. evening? beyond speculation here at westminster, that some conservatives could join the ranks of the a chance for liverpool independent group, nobody is confirming anything, it does within the group as it is at the moment
10:46 pm
wa nt to the group as it is at the moment want to focus on their latest addition to their number and joan ryan and we have to wait and see. certainly they will need if they are to become a significant presence in themselves at parliament and have any influence or change the political landscape, they will need if not many more resignations from the labour party, some at least, numbers from the conservatives or perhaps other parties joining their ra nks perhaps other parties joining their ranks today, to claim to be truly different and independent. you are watching bbc news and now the papers. hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are defence correspondent at the times, lucy fisher and columnist at the guardian, dawn foster. many of tomorrow's front
10:47 pm
pages are already in. let's ta ke let's take a look. the story we just mentioned... joan ryan has become the eighth labour mp to quit the party and join the newly formed independent group, says the times. meanwhile the i reports that several tory mps are on the brink of quitting their party and also joining the group, which was set up by seven labour mps yesterday. the mirror has a picture of shamima begum on its front page — the government is revoking her citizenship after she fled the uk to join the islamic state as a 15—year—old. but, as the guardian reports, ms begum's family are considering legal avenues to prevent the home office from stripping her of her citizenship. the metro pays tribute to the designer karl largerfeld, who died in paris — they call him the "chanel legend adored by the glitterati". the closure of the honda plant
10:48 pm
in swindon makes the front page of the financial times, a move which they call the "heaviest blow in a generation", and topshop boss sir philip green is being investigated by police in the united states, according to the telegraph. they show a picture of katie surridge, who says the businessman groped her. data set for the front page and now let's talk to guests this evening and see what has taken your attention? i think the news about john ryan is fascinating and i doubt it will be the last resignation we hear from labour and i it will be the last resignation we hearfrom labour and i picked up previously reported from the parliamentary lobby, other mps are on the brink and it is notjust labour, there are conservative mps, and a lot of rumours going around then and if they are also thinking
10:49 pm
of taking the play and leaving the conservatives. nothing confirmed yet but we are releasing an alignment potentially of both political parties have dominated for the past few days. what is interesting about john ryan is it focuses on the anti—semitism... john ryan is it focuses on the anti-semitism. .. the perception mp is focused heavily on brexit and that really bound them altogether where asjoan that really bound them altogether where as joan ryan that really bound them altogether where asjoan ryan came out the second day and said as chair of labour of israel, she can no longer in good faith and state in the party and she has gone do not come out with a 4—page letter on twitter and cannot stay any longer and she does not believe this is a problem that existed in previous times. it is near and existed in previous times. it is nearand can existed in previous times. it is near and can only jeremy existed in previous times. it is near and can onlyjeremy corbyn. it raises questions on who is responsible in this instance for the anti—semitism, new members, current
10:50 pm
mps but also one thing that keeps coming up is precisely what exactly you want people to do about it. both conservatives and labour have very difficult kind of procedures with dealing with complaints so obviously john ryanjoining dealing with complaints so obviously john ryan joining the dealing with complaints so obviously john ryanjoining the independent group and we will see what they do about the allegations of racism. it is an interesting time. staying with this, the times front page, she is comparingjeremy this, the times front page, she is comparing jeremy corbyn with president trump saying he is likewise a danger. it is a pretty punchy analogy and i think slightly more measured as like she said when she was asked the question, does she thinkjeremy corbyn is an anti—semite and she said there it is impossible to know what is in the heart of the other person but it is striking that he has not taken
10:51 pm
action to stamp out a problem we have been hearing about for several yea rs have been hearing about for several years now, since he took the labour leadership. and i am not surprised that she has drawn the conclusion that she has drawn the conclusion that he is and some ice. let's leave that he is and some ice. let's leave that for the moment and move the metro, this is a story that has been shifting this evening. obviously, shamima begum, left bethnal green with two friends when she was 15 years old and was found by one of your colleagues and a syrian refugee camp. it has been a fast moving story and obviously the government we re story and obviously the government were not clear about what they were going to do her, her parents and the girl herself said she wanted to come back and that she accepted that isis had essentially collapsed and she wanted to return home with her son was born over the weekend and now
10:52 pm
her parents have reported that a letter from the home office was received and she was stripped of her citizenship and that raises questions about what happens to people who do flee but also where leaving. it sets a dangerous precedent in many ways. any thoughts on the front page? i am sceptical of the news going on here, we need to see this in the context of conservative politics and he came out very quickly after, to track down shamima begum to be syrian refugee camp and said he would do everything in its power to stop her returning but i am not clear if it is and his power or the uk plus my power to stop her but we will see a legal appeal here and i would be surprised at the home office can push this through and it is not returned on an appeal that it is interesting that he made this initial... a lot of uncertainty over wet connections with bangladesh, what would be the alternative
10:53 pm
statement for her? her mother has bangladeshi citizen ship and it is now president for the uk to be able to apply for dual citizenship on her behalf if she does not want to. i think it is slightly bizarre that suggestion is being made that she could be pawned off on another country to which she does not have citizenship. and uncertainty for her son. who possibly has a right to british citizenship, does not have any right to bangladeshi citizenship and a huge number of questions at the moment but first about what happens to herand the moment but first about what happens to her and her son but over whether or not the government have these powers at all. they will come forward with some answers at some point. the financial times takes a look at this rather sad story about the swindon plant of honda and the three and a half originaljobs but three and a half originaljobs but three and a half originaljobs but three and a half additionaljobs due to affiliates. really great news
10:54 pm
today and i mean interesting that honda says this is not anything to do with brexit but it is striking that the uncertainty around brexit is heading the automotive industry and it is undeniable that the government, the time and resources being spent on brexit means there is not the bandwidth there to take action to help the sector, and verse from nissan and for two said they are worried about the impact from uk secession from the eu, so pretty grim picture, even widerthan secession from the eu, so pretty grim picture, even wider than the bad news today. do you feel this is giving us any insights into some of those factors at work?|j giving us any insights into some of those factors at work? i think the name and site at the moment is there isjust name and site at the moment is there is just absolutely massive uncertainty. and we need these jobs in the uk, we need skilled jobs especially if we move towards an
10:55 pm
economy that is increasingly precarious. fewer and fewer long—term contracts like that's available fewer factories open. the uncertainty is not very helpful even if it isa uncertainty is not very helpful even if it is a claim it is not directly related to brexit, the uncertainty does not help and even at this point many of the people who work in businesses around the uk are increasingly worried about what impact brexit will have but also the fa ct impact brexit will have but also the fact that they really are struggling in terms of long—term planning. before i let you both go, back to noa where we started but with a different party. this question of splitting but and the tories on the front page of the eye. john major came out today, really urging tories to think very carefully and not make a bad move but i think there have been movements, brexit really has exposed divisions that were
10:56 pm
underlying perhaps in both labour and the conservatives. sort of economic and social issues and both ended and ballot alliances and there is an overlap between the tories who are more to the left and some labour mps who are more to the right so i would not be surprised if we see some of those conservatives who feel strongly about brexit and feel the conservatives have lost their way, lea n conservatives have lost their way, lean slightly more to the right a nswer lean slightly more to the right answer out wallace talked about utep effect and being re—assimilated back into the conservative party. will be seejumpers into the conservative party. will be see jumpers out of tories? that there is more to lose under the tories so i would be more surprised by that fencing more from labour. that is all we have time for. thank you so very much. they will be both back at 11:30pm but for the moment goodbye from all three of us.
10:57 pm
good evening. soggy evening across the northwest of the country, but very, very mild. in fact, very wet across some parts of the uk, cadenbury, for example, will get its fair share of the rain for the next 12 hours or so. the clouds are coming in out of the southwest. in fact, the air is coming all the way from that canary islands, so it is going to be very mild tonight. we are going to keep this mild weather really through the rest of the week, the temperatures will keep on climbing as we head to the end of the week. here is the weather front through this evening, we're at right now, that rain splashing its way through scotland, the northwestern england. starting to ease a little bit from northern ireland, but it is not going to be completely dry because the rain may return by the early hours for wednesday morning. the temperatures early in the morning for wednesday will be around about eight to 10 degrees there in the north, and that is even higher than one or two spots. the weather fronts will cross northern parts of the uk for a time. eventually, they will move away
10:58 pm
from the east, which also means the weather will improve. it is certainly not looking like it is going to be a sunny day on wednesday. there will be lot of cloud and still some rain particularly in the western areas, wales here, aorund the lake district, western scotland. i think further south and east, that is where the weather will be driest and brightest. northeast and scottland may have some decent weather. here is thursday, and this is the picture across europe. here is the jet stream, crucially this big dip in thejet stream, which means the air will be coming in from the south and engulfing much of europe really so above average temperatures really with this high pressure. we really will notice the difference on thursday. the winds swinging from the south, for a time in the morning, there might be some cloud and rain in the far northwest, but i think widely we are expecting temperatures at the mid teens, 14, 15 celsius. maybe even a shade higher. as we had into thursday, this is where the air is coming from, i mentioned the canaries and northwestern parts of africa moving through liberia
10:59 pm
heading towards us. the temperatures will keep on climbing. it is not impossible that we will get as high up to around 18 celsius, which is exceptionally mild for this time of year. the record for february is actually 19.7. that is it for me. bye.
