10:38 pm
one of the athletes criticised by navratilova in her original piece was rachel mckinnon. she became the first transgender athlete to win a cycling world title in october and is also an adviser for athlete ally. she spoke to the bbc earlier. this is not a new issue. the ioc, the highest levels of support have continued this a settled issue for over 15 years. so the time for dialogue, for people who oppose the inclusion of trans athletes has come and gone in an important respect. and back in december, when martina first made some comments on twitter that i view to be transferred a bit,
10:39 pm
myself and a bunch of other people did engage with her in dialogue and athlete ally reached out to her at that time and martina either did not respond or dug in her heels. this latest piece in the sunday times was unprompted. it was something that she thought hard on and has committed to writing. trans athletes have been openly allowed to compete since the 2004 olympics. in the way that the regulations work for the ioc is that any sport that wishes to compete in the olympics, that international organisation also has to meet the ioc policies. so trans athletes have been openly allowed to compete at the world level since 2004. and not a single trans person has ever gone to the olympics since

10:41 pm
hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are broadcaster and author john kampfner and economics and trade correspondent at the telegraph, anna isaacs. lovely to have you both here tonight. chat in a moment. many of tomorrow's front pages are already in. "tory defectors march out with a view to destroy the party," is splashed across the front of the telegraph after anna soubry, heidi allen and sarah wollaston became the first tory mps to resign and join the independent group, accusing the prime minister of a "dismal failure" to stand up to eurosceptics.
10:42 pm
the daily mail leads with the backlash those three tory mps now face after announcing they're quitting the conservative partyjust as theresa may enters a critical period that will determine whether she gets her brexit deal over the line. "tory trio swell ranks of new political group," is the headline on the front of the financial times. the paper also reports on sainsbury‘s planned multi—billion—pound takeover of asda being on the brink of collapse after the competition watchdog voiced concerns over the deal. tories are now blukip. the metro lead with anna soulbry, heidi allen and sarah woolaston comparing the conservative party to the right—wing ukip after announcing their defection to the newly lanched

coherent electoral strategy. so it is going to be interesting to watch. not necessarily a problem. we are all obsessed in this with mr bubble in twitter and people saying things all the time and things have to happen every few minutes in order for them to seem to have value. the public does not operate in those terms in the normal people do not. in terms of getting a sense of what people want, a more moderate reasonable party, the impression that you have to party leaders in at jeremy corbyn and theresa may who are hell—bent on brexit and on much more visceral politics. and one interesting thing about when one co m pa res interesting thing about when one compares this with the foundation of the sdp in the 80s. it was remembered as being mainly labour splitting off into a more centrist party. and this is and i think it is going to be increasingly small but
