6:30 pm
hello this is bbc news. the headlines: ajudge rules the identity of the teenage boy who raped and murdered six—year—old alesha macphail to be revealed — he'516—year—old aaron campbell. ian austin has become the ninth mp to quit labour this week, blaming leaderjeremy corbyn for "creating a culture of extremism and intolerance". the un is warning the world's food system is under threat from a lack of biodiversity. and huge crowds have turned out in sheffield for a fly—past in honour of the american airmen whose plane crashed there during the second world war — including the man who'd campaigned for the tribute.
6:31 pm
in a moment it will be time for sportsday but first a look at what else is coming up this evening on bbc news... after 7 — following a tumultuous week in politics — we'll take a look at the state of the main political parties, and where this leaves brexit. with new research revealing as many as one in 13 young people in england and wales experience post—traumatic stress disorder by the age of 18, we'll speak to the report's author. and at 10.40 and 11.30, we'll take a first look at tomorrow's front pages in ‘the paper‘ —joining me will be home affairs editor at the evening standard, martin bentham, and economist and author of the great economists, linda yeuh. that's all ahead on bbc news now on bbc news it's time for sportsday
6:32 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm john watson live from cardiff and the principality stadium. we are live here tonight ahead of the third round of rugby union's six nations championship. where wales england will lock horns tomorrow in another huge contest. the match could go some way of determining the outcome of this yea r‘s determining the outcome of this year's championship. we will also be in paris where a wounded scotland take on a french side in disarray. and i am lizzie greenwood—hughes with the rest of the days sports news. as chelsea are banned from making any signings until next year after breaking fifa rules on under—age international transfers. and a second run out in barbados mightjust tip the second one dayer — englands way.
6:33 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. we are at the principality stadium. it's wales against england, the only two undefeated teams left in this yea r‘s two undefeated teams left in this year's six nations championship. it's being billed as a grand slam decider, a tournament decider. here we are in the depths of the stadium in the tunnel as you can see, pictures hung on the walls here, remind us of some special moments in the history of welsh rugby. you just wonder will tomorrow be another one of those? if you look at this as well, the home dressing room, you get a sense of what the players will be feeling, that anticipation, the expectation out of the game tomorrow. that is going to be keenly felt in the stands here in the stadium. this is rightly regarded as one of the great rugby arenas. we'll be speaking to a man at the moment he knows only too well what it's like to play in front of that fervent welsh crowd. first the adam
6:34 pm
wales looks ahead to this match. there's nothing quite like a six nations weekends where england come to call. but even by the standards of an ancient rivalry, this weekend brings with it a rare significance. the tournament yet to reach its halfway stage but already this is the moment that's really matters. everybody wants to play in these games. so, when it comes to them, the weekend, i don't see any reason why you should not enjoy it. you shouldn't love the occasion, you shouldn't love being part of it. you shouldn't love being part of it. you should allow it to bring the best day to you. england come to cardiff following huge victories in ireland and then over france. but that has come at a cost. key players missing the depth of english talent is now tested. despite this, they remain favourites. something they are picking to play down. with more than a hint of mischief the head coach
6:35 pm
insists this is all about wales. we are happy for them to carry that expectation and we will see how they handle the burden of it. obviously we are chasing their tails and we watch chase your tail pretty hard on game day. if that's what he thinks. we are in a good position. at the moment we had a good bit of form and we are very comfortable where we are. we need to keep a parent well and i'mjust are. we need to keep a parent well and i'm just excited for what's going to be a very good england team coming to cardiff. to fully understand why everyone is looking forward to those, one must also look back. a rivalry built on history. clashes with england have helped to define this modern wales site, but it's now been six long years since they beat their closest neighbours in the tournament, cardiff longs for another memorable moment. what lies
6:36 pm
beyond that for wales is a record, victories over france and italy with their tenth and 11th in succession. they have never made it to 12.|j think we are all pretty aware that we are eea — 777, ., think we are all pretty aware that we are e“ a good 7—77 ~ think we are all pretty aware that we areg a good run. - think we are all pretty aware that we are g a good run. we've done we are on a good run. we've done well over. last 12 months. but well over the last 12 months. but let's not get ahead of ourselves and we arejust let's not get ahead of ourselves and we are just trying to keep our feet on the ground and just know that this is another game, a big game for us, but we're pretty excited about it. they are not the only ones. 0ne of these great side, the evening may be unforgettable. i am nowjoined by the bbc‘s rugby correspondent chrisjones and former wales and british and irish lion dafydd james. we were hearing from the captain that that it's about enjoying it. it's about remaining, which is
6:37 pm
impeccable, but when you come into this cold room with the atmosphere, the crowd, the pyrotechnics, it's very difficult thing to do and they need to concentrate, both teams. it is only going to be 15 players verses 15 players what every man woman and child is going to be screaming on the television especially in wales. he certainly knows how to stoke up the fire. it's beena knows how to stoke up the fire. it's been a desperate clamour to reach the underdog tag basically between these people, trying to talk up the opposition. no one experts england to win, eddie jones said, that doesn't really work now because england have scored almost 80 point into games, they looked sensational against ireland and france and the bookies have england as favourites. they are the favourites in this game. they have won the last four te st game. they have won the last four test matches against wales, three in the six nations under eddie jones. he will say but there are some great
6:38 pm
welsh teams in history. the only person who is calling us the greatest team of all—time is eddie jones. great welsh teams in history have never reached 12 games in a row, if they can achieve that tomorrow and a win over england, this really would be a special day in welsh rugby history. absolutely. 12, tomorrow would be fantastic. wales haven't played that well really in the past two games, they've shown a lot of tenacity and drive on the france game in the second half they were exceptional. they obviously with italy was a great went but tomorrow is going to be the real challenge. coming up against one of the best teams in the world at the moment and the way that england have played, sublime, really. we will see a different sort of team coming to the field tomorrow. just a quick word on the england camp, the image will be higher. mood is higher, is about
6:39 pm
embracing the occasion. that's what eddie's message was. also to his players as well was how exciting for an england rugby player to come down here to this incredible stadium, against... brutal physical and smart by. against... brutal physical and smart rugby. those are the messages that england that is in control that have w011 england that is in control that have won and cardiff before they are missing a couple of players, but certainly is an england camp as opposed to this time last year that they looked in control both mentally and emotionally and physically. thank you. wales will feel they have yet to hit full stride and that's probably a view shared by... scotla nd probably a view shared by... scotland have also promised so much but they have failed really to deliver as things stand. they get action under way tomorrow. is the first match so far. an interesting
6:40 pm
contest for them as they take on france in paris, somewhere they have not won in 20 years in their preparations was utterly hit by news that they won't have one of their players available this weekend and with hugh jones out, players available this weekend and with huthones out, a lot of notable absentees from the scotland team, so how can they finally get this when that they so desperately wa nt this when that they so desperately want in paris? history greets you at every turn on the streets of one of the worlds great cities. and its history on the minds of many scotland fans who have travelled here. they want to see their team create some of their own. we are always optimistic. the french have been playing well. a scoring france team could beat... i do fancy us france team could beat... i do fancy us tomorrow. hopeful. a lot of injuries to the team, so i'm more hopeful by the way the french were in the second half against wales, fingers crossed. how good would it be to be here for the first win in
6:41 pm
20 years against france? absolutely brilliant. the city is beautiful, the people are great, a win for scotland would be superb. records and statistics are not... there is a job to do but the prospect of joining a select band of scotland international is to win in france is a tantalising one. excited with having the team. it's exciting when you are ready to go. it's now up to us... you are ready to go. it's now up to us... this former scotland international has well placed to judge the state of the french game having played his rugby in france for the past five years. they've changed their team again, it smells a bit of panic as opposed to the theory of strategy behind it and we'll see what happens tomorrow. it's going to be hard to tell what actually arrives in terms of the
6:42 pm
french team. the press really went for them after that england game. embarrassment, humiliation, and that's the feeling in france as well. embarrassed about the state of the national side. so can their scottish side deliver a first win here since 1999, if they do, there will cement their place in scottish by will cement their place in scottish rugby folklore. so here are the confirmation of this round s fixtures. two games on saturday france vs scotland followed by wales vs england here — then on sunday ireland play italy in rome. italy have lost their first two games but the ireland coach isn't what do scotland have to do, 20 yea rs. what do scotland have to do, 20 years. it seems that winning away from home, is something scotland to really struggles to do. yes. they've got a problem winning in england.
6:43 pm
they've got a problem winning in cardiff and they've got a problem winning in paris as well. before the tournament it was noted there was a long injury list but we didn't bank on losing a number of players, so it's eight and test for scotland, the saving grace for them is that france are being an absolute rabble. but, scotland needs in away win. if they're going to be serious contenders at this world cup, they will feel with the way they've been making signs of the party has both domestically and internationally, they should be able to beat a french tea m they should be able to beat a french team that are struggling at the moment, but those injuries will take their toll as well. they haven't really had the dizzy heights as well that we were expecting them to full it seems as though in the six nations, promising so much but have not having much managed to deliver. they've been up against a really good teams, ireland have been very good. england have really turned the corner over the past few months, wales on this great unbeaten run as we have spoken about. losing at on two islands of the eight of one to
6:44 pm
swallow for the scots. they've turned murrayfield into something of a six nations fortress, beat wales there two years ago, beat england last year, so to lose that game was disappointing because of the opportunities they had, you can't really see them winning at twickenham at the end of the six nations, i might be wrong but there would be history making if they do. this game is incredibly difficult for scotland tomorrow to prove they can win away from home and back up some of that promise. ireland are going to see some perennial underachievers, always seem to win the wooden spoon a chance for ireland to shuffle the pack and after that heavy defeat ireland don't become a bad team overnight, don't become a bad team overnight, do they? they do need to get their mojo back. we saw in 2018 with the grand slam with the win in australia, in the summer beating the all blacks, so impressively, it felt like ireland were ready to kick on and on but that defeat against england really stopped them in their tracks, they went greater than scotland, got the job done. tracks, they went greater than scotland, got thejob done. so, they need to show, show some of that old irish shack we saw. they rested a
6:45 pm
number of players, so they have had a chance to bring through some different names up front, but that is may be a sign of how italy aren't considered real opposition as they... that surely going to fire they... that surely going to fire the italians up. many thanks indeed. we will be back in moment to look ahead to the matches in the women's tournament but before that lets get the rest of the days sports news — lizzie is at the bbc sport centre. england have a full ten point as a turn from their opening two matches. that is overly visibility stadium for now. it's a busy weekend of football with some huge matches including the league cup final at wembley on sunday between chelsea and manchester city.
6:46 pm
and after a bumpy few weeks — chelsea could do without any off pitch distraction but that's excatly what they have now. after fifa announced they're banned from signing players in the next two transfer windows for breaking rules in relation to youth players. eleanor roper reports from stamford bridge. yes, the ban in place untiljanuary 2020 doesn't stop chelsea from selling players but it does mean they can't buy them and chelsea has also been fined £460,000 but says it does intend to appeal this decision. this has all come about following an investigation by fifa and fifa has looked at the way chelsea buys foreign under 18 players and it has really strict rules which apply to these young players and that is to protect them from exploitation or from being trafficked for example, one of those roles as a child can't move to a foreign club if they are under 18 unless their parents are already moving to that country for

non—footballing reasons. they were governing body says if a breaches in 29 out of the 92 cases that it looked at at chelsea. 0ne 29 out of the 92 cases that it looked at at chelsea. one of those investigated was the former striker. he signed with chelsea when he was 18 but it was claimed he wasn't registered with the faa until a year later. in a statement chelsea says we welcome the fact that fifa accepted there was no breach in relation to 63 of these players but they are disappointed that they have not accepted the club has mac submissions in relation to the remaining 29 players. it says says chelsea acted in accordance with the rules and intends to appeal shortly. the faa is also said it would be appealing the decision. for now though chelsea have the carabao cup final to think about. and between them and their first silverware of the season are the premier league leaders manchester city — who beat chelsea 6—0 this month... the match is at 16.30 on sunday and you can follow it on the bbc sport wesbite. well while the two clubs prepare for sunday's game —

city's manager pep guardiola wanted to send his best wishes to the fan who was serioiusly injured after their champions league win in germany on wednesday. the 32—year—old man is still critically ill in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in a violent confrontation with two schalke supporters. our thoughts of course and best wishes from all of us. it's tough news. football, the game is spectacular for everyone who enjoy it and still right now, this kind of thing happens unfortunately. hopefully the police in germany can sort out that problem. the most important thing is that he can recover, and gets well as soon as possible. the weekend's football kicks off tonight — with two matches this evening... one of those is at cardiff city where they'll play their first home game since the death of their striker emiliano sala was confirmed earlier this month.. they're hosting watford and manager

neil warnock says he's been proud of the way his players have coped with the tragedy. i think some of the younger lads, it probably brought home a little bit more about the family situation. you don't really know what's going down in their minds, but one or two of the younger lads, it affected them more than the senior pros. but, i think the senior pros have been excellent. we have got a good team of senior pros. they are very, very good professionals and i think they've been excellent around the training ground. here are the weekend's fixtures in full — west ham — fulham. is the other match tonight... spurs get things going tomorrow in the lunchtime kick off at burnley but the big match is on sunday... liverpool looking to go back to the top of the table — away at manchester united.

england's cricketers are back in action in the second one—dayer against west indies.... with confidence sky high after their record run chase in the first match — england opted to bowl after winning the toss in barbados but the windies hit straight back at them... chris gayle hitting 4 sixes on his way to a half century... he was out a few balls later though without adding to his score — bowled by adil rashid // the game looked hard to call as the scoreboard ticked over but two run outs — this one at the expense of captain jason holder look to havejust tipped it england's way, jason roy with the fine work there. but some late hitting from the windies has seen them push past 250. the latest score from there is now that they are 266—6 with around three overs left to play. england are one nilup three overs left to play. england are one nil up in the best—of—5 series. meanwhile england's women have also been in action, they're in india for three one—days and three twenty20's. but they lost the opening game

in mumbai by 66 runs. what we have done in the past, we have bounced back brilliantly from performances where we have not been as our best. we haven't spent a day and we are going to have to do that. we have to be honest as a team, and it individually will be wrong today and then reassess and try and go again. i think individually, everyone's got to be really clear about how they're going to go about it. obviously, our pictures deteriorated more than they thought today and it started to turn, but we've got to be really clear on how we've got to be really clear on how we are going to go about things and how we are going to put on a much better showing for the next game. a quick look now at some of the other stories around today... and chelsea will face the ukrainian side dynamo kiev in the last 16 of the europa league.. they eased past malmo in the last round. arsenal will take on french side rennes. both will play at home in the first leg on the 7th of march with the return games a week later. coventry city could be expelled from the football league unless they can prove where they'll

play their home games next season. their rental agreement at the ricoh arena runs—out in the summer. coventry‘s owners remain in a legal battle with wasps who own the stadium. stoke city's jack butland will wear a replica gordon banks' shirt against aston villa tomorrow — in tribute to the england world cup winner who died this month aged 81. and — widnes vikings have been deducted 12 points after going into administration. they face liquidation if suitable investment isn't found by next week. a proposed takeover fell through on tuesday, while sunday's game against the sheffield eagles has been postponed. widnes were relegated from super league last season after a seven—year stint. so that's the rest of the sport — now back tojohn in cardiff welcome back to the cardiff — another exciting weekend of 6 nations rugby coming up. the men play england here tomorrow and the women play the same fixture

at the arms park on sunday. compare that to england who have two wins to their name and are running seven tries against the grand slam champions france. so, just how much ofa champions france. so, just how much of a tough task is going to be for wales ? of a tough task is going to be for wales? who are a professional side, i spoke to the wales forward about the task facing them this weekend. the home game is a lwa ys this weekend. the home game is always amazing. it was incredible having all friends and family around us 01’ having all friends and family around us or to support you. and also the younger generations of girls looking up younger generations of girls looking up to you and you are inspiring them. that's a nice feeling to have known you are playing at home. as a young squad also. is there a sense with younger players coming through at the moment you are looking to try and build towards the future as well? if things aren't working necessarily on the field in this six nations you are looking for future campaigns and hoping to be more competitive there? yes, definitely. the idea behind having such a young
6:54 pm
squad is that in two years' time going into the world cup we will still have a young squad, but an experienced young squad with a lot of ca ps experienced young squad with a lot of caps between them. it's a definitely building blocks but it ta kes definitely building blocks but it takes nothing away from the younger players that are in the squad, because they are having their place. competitively, do you think going forward is a chance you will be able to close that gap between yourself and england with regards to the competitive nature of your matches? yet, hopefully. 0r competitive nature of your matches? yet, hopefully. or we competitive nature of your matches? yet, hopefully. 0rwe can competitive nature of your matches? yet, hopefully. or we can do is keep working on our processes and as we slowly built on our own performances, the gap was slowly close. so, with regards to england, it isa close. so, with regards to england, it is a case you just want to try and concentrate on what you can do and concentrate on what you can do and presumably england, before turning professional over a good side, you will be preparing differently in light of the advances in the developments they have made asa in the developments they have made as a team? yes, if you look at the past few years, england have also been a very strong squad and the results have been similarfor the past few years. whether they were
6:55 pm
professional or not, but definitely. so the wells for talking to me about that task facing them this weekend. as we can see italy are up against ireland. france take on scotland at nine o'clock and then on sunday wales up against england at cardiff arms park. before we go tonight it's worth pointing out the atmosphere that the england team can look to face. 0ther that the england team can look to face. other members of the england tea m face. other members of the england team have spoken about how tough it is to play in front of this welsh quite a mess of the new witness as well with the coach working its way through the furtherance wales support. he said how tough it can be playing in front of this welsh crowd. you are hated there. some of those fans generally hate you. they want to make it measurable for you. they wa nt to make it measurable for you. they want to make the journey and the not scary, but intimidating, hostile.
6:56 pm
and then obviously the stadium is amazing to play at when they close the roof. it is awesome. it's awesome to fill the experience. you generally, i'm on the bench, you get stick the whole time, but it feels you a little bit more. england can expect plenty of stick this weekend, interesting to know the roof will remain open, conditions are expected to be good and fair tomorrow for the game. just explain what it is like playing in front of this welsh support and how impressive it can be, you will be... for england, that was quite something they face. yes, it can be daunting for some players really, but the atmosphere that is generated within the stadium, it's like it can bea within the stadium, it's like it can be a little bit intimidating and hostile on occasions, but her standing up in the back of your neck, the anthem going around and the buzz, the pyrotechnics, like i mentioned earlier on, every man
6:57 pm
woman and child will be glued to the television or just woman and child will be glued to the television orjust outside the stadium, it's a fantastic atmosphere and england will have to just keep it within their camp otherwise that that crowd. make a mistake in the crowd will seize on that early on. yes. there will be cheering, but it's a great atmosphere. both supporters do mix very well. there isa supporters do mix very well. there is a great place to go. but when it comes to the game, it's 15 guys against 15 guys and it's going to be against 15 guys and it's going to be a warof against 15 guys and it's going to be a war of attrition, but otherwise not have a couple of protein shakes. more than a protein shake i would have thought. many thanks for your time tonight. england were just be playing wales, there will be playing this crowd here tomorrow. what an amateur it is going to be. what a game it's going to be and wejust wonder how much that will affect the destination of this year's title. we will have all of the results, all of the reaction in interviews and analysis to come into sports day, that's tomorrow at 6:30pm and repeated again at 730. but wherever

you are watching, enjoy all of the six nations action. good night. good afternoon. many parts of the uk once again enjoying unseasonable warmth and some sunshine, however, there have been exceptions saucy south coast. a lot of mist and muck and low cloud has been lingering. cloud across parts of scotland and northern ireland is bringing just the odd spot of rain but for most tonight, we seek less guys, south—eastern parts of the uk into east anglia, the midland, parts of northern england, we can again expect some mist and murk, some low cloud, the patch of fog, but this weather in the east is likely to lingerfor weather in the east is likely to linger for some weather in the east is likely to lingerfor some as we weather in the east is likely to linger for some as we go through tomorrow. that could make for a bit ofa tomorrow. that could make for a bit of a disappointing day in parts of eastern england, many areas rife with areas of sanjay, one frontal system bringing rain across northern ireland into western scotland,
