hello and welcome to sportsday, with me lizzie greenwood—hughes and hugh woozencroft. the headlines this evening... wales stone england in the six nations. there's no love for scotland in paris as their 20 year wait for a win in france continues... and burnley put a big dent in spurs‘ title hopes — beating them 2—1 in the premier league. also coming up in the programme... manchester city win the first silverware of the women's domestic season — the league cup — beating holders arsenal on penalties... and britain'sjonny brownlee wins the men's eliminator race at the super league triathlon event in singapore.
6:32 pm
wales have beaten england in the six nations for the first time since 2013. they've won at the principality stadium in the last few minutes by 21 points to 13. and it means they have three wins out of three in the competition, keeping their hopes alive of winning the grand slam. england edged a tight first half with this opportunist score from 20—year—old tom curry. that put them 10—3 ahead at half—time and on course for a third straight win in this six nations campaign. but wales chipped away at that deficit with kicks from gareth anscombe, who was given the opportunity at fly half ahead of dan biggar. it put them just four points behind with 15 minutes to go, so cory hill, the second row gave his wales side
6:33 pm
the lead with this score, he just got it down on the line. and in the last few minutes josh adams has surely made it safe finishing off this brilliant try from biggar, the substitue‘s kick. that is a great win as they make it a record 12th consecutive when. wales have unbeaten in the 6—nation zd wales have unbeaten in the 6—nation 20 as our england which means they can be on for the grand slam. it would be great result for them. it would be great result for them. it has brought us so much drama, i guess it was not too dramatic for scotland. well scotland went to france knowing they hadn't won a match in the six nations in paris since 1999... they were, however taking on a team with just 3 wins
6:34 pm
from their last 19 tests. however, the form book went out the window as france put in a stirring performance to earn a bonus—point, 27—10 win at the parc de princes, as hannah lupton reports... amidst the flags and fire two familiar foes. it has been 20 years since scotland last won in paris and victory could reignite their championship. france were humiliated by england last time out. if their confidence was low, ntamack found the line. french rugby at its best! when dealing with a wounded animal, beware of the bite. scotland lost a number of players due to injury but missing chances did not help the cause. the home side were in control despite having two tries ruled out. they led by seven points at the break. scotland needed to respond but france picked up where they left off.
6:35 pm
hughet pushed the men in white further ahead. the men in blue did not look like scoring. try number three from france was all about forward power with gregor alldrit making it over. ali price found space for scotland's first and final try. france got their final try in the eighth minute of overtime. that old french player returned. scotland's wait for a party in paris continues. we look at our performance and it was certainly worse than expected. france played well. i felt they brought more energy to the game than we did, especially early on and that got the crowd behind them and they played with confidence. it was not a good enough start for us on either half. there were times we played
6:36 pm
well, at the end of the first—half and second half but it is not good enough at this level. we feel beleaguered because we have been through tough days and now we have an important when —— we feel really good. we just need to get back to work on monday and try and prepare to forgot away games. well that's the six nations covered. hugh can tell us now what's been happening in the premier league today. it is going to be a tight title race and the same when it comes to premier league football. but will spurs be in the conversation? spurs had the chance to move two points behind leaders manchester city with a win at burnley in today's early kick off but they lost 2—1. it's burnley‘s sixth win in their last nine league matches, and they're unbeaten since boxing day. spurs manager mauricio pochettino wasn't happy with referee mike dean after the match — we'll talk about that in a moment — but first james burford
6:37 pm
reports on a missed opportunity for tottenham. there cannot be many better signs for spurs fan than talisman harry kane back from injury however it is not the most welcoming place. kane's return to the tottenham team brings with it more than just a touch of class, on this occasion tom heaton responded in kind. burnley‘s real strength lies in physicality and set pieces sets them apart. this headerfrom chris wood makes it four goals in the last four games. spurs were unhappy about the awarding of a corner in the first place. determined not to throw it away danny rose threw it forward to kane. rarely in this position the england captain make a mistakes. not a bad way to might you return to action. but this day belongs to the home side.
6:38 pm
burnley are not yet out of the relegation fight. just a wasted opportunity for tottenham? so a blow to any hope spurs may still have of winning the title. their manager mauricio pochettino doesn't consider his side as contenders anymore and he certainly wasn't happy after the match. you can see pictures of him remonstrating with referee mike dean here. pochettino looks clearly frustrated but he didn't elaborate on what was troubling him in the post match interview... now that we are all relaxed it is difficult to explain but i think what happened on the pitch happened on the pitch, we cannot blame anyone. we need to blame ourselves. i need to play myself first and when the defeat happened it was in our hands to when, we should be doing better and we need to blame ourselves.
6:39 pm
we are not a side that can circuit around like man city, we know that. we have to be effective with the players we have got and we have good players. i think we were effective today and i thought we constantly asked questions. i thought we were outstanding. huddersfield was beaten 2—0 at huddersfield was beaten 2—0 at huddersfield park. the match was pretty eventful and the first—half was dominant for newcastle. tommy smith was given a straight red card for huddersfield and played with ten men for over an hour. the first goal came 59 seconds into the second half and that was followed by a second goal. really pleased, i think we needed to win and we did it, creating a lot of
6:40 pm
chances. we had chances during the whole game so when they were passing the ball at the beginning we still had the chances and with ten players we had more control so i am really happy with the performance of the players and the weight that we played. the redcoat changed the game so it was “— the redcoat changed the game so it was —— the red card changed the game so was —— the red card changed the game so it was easy to defend with ten players on the pitch. after the redcoat it is always difficult. there was another game between bournemouth and wolves at the vitality stadium. it finished 1— one but there was two penalties awarded. the opening goal came from josh king, his fourth goal in his last five premier league appearances. it was equalised for the penalty spot
6:41 pm
with seven minutes to go. however, another penalty was given just moments laterfor a foul another penalty was given just moments later for a foul that actually looks like it was outside of the penalty area. josh king stepped up and missed, only the second mess out of his last ten penalty attempts to disappointment for bournemouth. mentally m e nta lly we mentally we were good today. it was a tough game and bulls play their way and they do it really well. ta ctically we way and they do it really well. tactically we were really good, we weren't fluid at the start but i thought we were jogging in mentality. it is just a shame we cannot get the win we wanted but we will take the point and move on. we know we have a tough week. i think we will go for the game. sometimes one team is in control and one team has chances but i think all the players were committed to playing the game so when i see my players so committed i am happy
6:42 pm
manager. the late kick off is well under way. that is between leicester city and crystal palace, one goal so far. for crystal palace, one goal so far. for crystal palace, one goal so far. for crystal palace, confirmation of the day's other results as well. we can see what that does to the table. that defeat by tottenham hotspur is not helping their title chances, who are five points behind manchester city. they play in the league cup tomorrow against chelsea and liverpool. it is a difficult blow for them in terms of their title aspirations. bournemouth are up to tenth after their point against wolves who stay in eighth. that's happy look at the bottom of the table. huddersfield's defeat to newcastle leaves them rooted firmly to the bottom. newcastle for the moment move up to 14th.
6:43 pm
right that pretty much wraps up the day's premier league news. over to lizzie now for the day's other football and the rest of the day's sport. a busy day in the championship with 11 games... leaders norwich city twice came from behind to beat bristol city 3—2. elsewhere there were wins for brentford, leeds — who are just two points behind norwich, middlesbrough, preston, sheffield wednesday and sheffield united who are a goal up at west brom at half time... shefield united will stay second on goal difference ahead of leeds if they can win. stoke drew at home to aston villa — it was the club's first opportunity to pay tribute to one of their icons — england's world cup winning goalkeeper gordon banks, who died earlier this month. banks spent six years with stoke in the late 60s and early 70s. it was also the city where he lived for much of his later life. the home supporters revealed a green goalkeeping shirt during a minute's silence, and stoke's goalkeeperjack butland wore a commemorative replica jersey. there were three games in the scottish premiership today... hearts drew with bottom side st mirren. livingstone beat kilmarnock.
6:44 pm
third placed aberdeen won at stjohnstone andceltic and rangers are both playing tomorrow... it's the league cup final at wembley tomorrow and manchester city could do the double after their women's team won the continental league cup today. they beat holders arsenal on penalties. jo currie reports from bramhall lane. for teams in england women's this final had promised a lot, arguably the two a lot, arguably the two form teams in england women's football coming together to battle it out for the first piece of major silverware. we got an edgy affair that went down to the wire. the match started slowly after an eventful 45 minutes and city started to find their rhythm when a floated free kick found its way to a head but only directed onto the bar. jill scott tried her luck but the keeper was equal to it before arsenal's vivianne miedema flashed a volley just wide at the other end.
6:45 pm
there was time for beckie to find it with this effort but the match was stretched for time and after that failed to provide a winner. penalties were calling. after both teams played their opening spot kicks. it was leah williamson's turn but she cannot find a way past the keeper. there was another miss and the keeper was again too strong. it was left to the canadian international beckie to score from the spot and secure their third league title. today's victory could be the start of another historic treble for manchester city with the club still in the running for the fa cup and league title two. however the celebrations may have to be cut short with the majority of the squad disappearing off into international duty first thing tomorrow morning. let's have a quick look at some of the other sports stories around today... great britain's women's hockey team claimed theirfirst win in the new pro league after a 3—2 shoot out victory over china.
6:46 pm
anna toman scored the winner to claim an extra point and move britain up to seventh in the 9 team league. crowd favourite jimmy white reached the last 32 of the snooker shoot out in watford with a tense 32 points to—18 win over fellow englishman john astley. at 56, white is the oldest player in the event... sri lanka have become the first asian side to win a test series in south africa. they won the second test by 8 wickets in port elizabeth to complete a 2— nil victory. it follows their dramatic one wicket win in durban last weekend. britain'sjonny brownlee looks back to his best — winning the men's eliminator on the final round of the super league triathlon in singapore. the event features three rounds of swim—bike—run, with 10 racers eliminated in the first round and five more in the second to leave a top 10 racing for the title in a final round. 0lympic silver medallist brownlee saw off the favourites in a dramatic final round.
6:47 pm
it has been a long time since i won a race so it has been a long time since i won a race so it is about time. it was hide work and i made a stupid mistake early but at the end eve ryo ne mistake early but at the end everyone got tired before i did so i am so everyone got tired before i did so i am so happy to win again. the women's eliminator was won by american katie zaferes britain's jodie stimpson is not competing in this weekend's races. stay with us on sportsday, also coming up in the programme... the countdown is on. we look ahead to tonight's make or break fight between chris eubankjunior and james de gale. well away from the 6 nations, domestic rugby union keeps going with 4 premiership fixtures today. exeter stretched their lead at the top of the table beating bottom side newcastle.
6:48 pm
harlequins stay third after beating bristol. northampton narrowly won at home to bath and sale won the midtable encounter over wasps. three matches in the pro 1a — only one result for you though... the italian side benneton thrashed the dragons 57 points to 7. ulster zebre and edinburgh cardiff are both 7.35 kick offs. now we've already covered all the men's rugby but there's plenty of action in the women's six nations this weekend. italy have just kicked off against ireland and france are up against scotland in an 8 o clock kick off. you can watch both matches via the red button. tomorrow wales host england. the game's governing body is hoping the excitement will persuade thousands more women and girls to pick up a ball for the first time. hundreds of so—called inner warrior sessions are being held across the uk and our very own mike bushell has been to one in manchester.
6:49 pm
across the land the chase is on for the egg—shaped ball and to find more girls and women wanting to give rugby a go. and even on a freezing winters night hundreds forgot about the snow and cold, as some like charlotte picked up a rugby ball for the first time. it is nice to know that i am able to play rugby. it is something i have never considered, a lot of the stigma around girls playing rugby has been removed and especially in clubs like this and in manchester and the uni and stuff. it is a good challenge. this is chaos, the biggest match i had ever been involved in. there is no structure. it is the thrill of picking up a ball and running with it. forward passes are allowed on this occasion, it is just about getting people to get a feel of the ball. i thought it was going to be hard but we were just running and having fun. i thought it was quite rough
6:50 pm
but i feel like i really liked it because i like tackling and things like that. the session helps to build on the excitement surrounding the six nations, especially when you have england's top points scorer this season on hand to inspire you. but there were not any sessions like this when she was starting out. people think rugby is contact. this is the beauty of being a warrior, you have the opportunity to use a rugby ball but you are playing games that you used to play in football and netball. it is about getting girls involved in the game, as a whole rugby recognises the value of different shapes and sizes, so this is a nice opportunity for them to play with their friends and have a go. it might be a chance for people to fit in where they don't fit in other sports. there are hundreds of sessions being held right across the country and since inner warrior started some 12,000 women and girls have been picking up a ball for the first time. when everyone is here you feel like you are family
6:51 pm
it is not that competitive so we can just have fun and the snow does not bother us. ijust love the snow. in the end we got more competitive. in those inner warrior sessions you can let loose, find space and dive over the line for a glorious try. well if you have long enough arms. there is always one that forgets a line. tha nkfully thankfully some players made it to the line today. london broncos against castleford is well into the second half.. there are two games in rugby league super league
6:52 pm
to tell you about... salford red devils fought back to beat hull kr 2a points to 22 at craven park. london broncos against castleford is well into the second half.. cass are ahead 38—6 — greg eden amongst the try—scorers. a win will see them go joint top of the super league table... chris eubank says he's petrified of his son losing his big fight tonight, against james degale. just a word of warning there's some flash photography in the pictures we're about to show you. it's a crucial career fight for the 33—year—old degale, who's a two—time super middleweight world champion and olympic gold medallist — while chris eubankjunior has yet to break into the sport's elite... and de gale says the loser, will have to retire. at this stage in my career i have two when. i put in the hard work, i have trained extremely hard, i had taken it extremely serious. i know you hear this a lot but i believe i am in the best shape i have ever been in. honestly, mentally and physically i am in great shape. he isa he is a proven fighter, he has
6:53 pm
fought in more high—profile fights than me. he is a former olympic gold medallist so in that sense you could say he is a pedigree but in terms of the levels we are at now and in terms of howl the levels we are at now and in terms of how i feel as a fighter i think i am levels above him. i feel i have the pedigree, i knowl think i am levels above him. i feel i have the pedigree, i know i have the height, strength and speed, everything combined is going to be too much for him. that's all from sportsday. we can tell you leicester city have equalised against crystal palace with around about 25 minutes left. if you are a rugby fan today has been about the huge result for wales in cardiff. they have beaten england 21-13. in cardiff. they have beaten england 21—13. england were the favourites so 21—13. england were the favourites so this is going to shock quite either you fans across the country but wales have done it. they are still on for the grandson. we'll have more at 7.30. -- via —— via still on for the grand slam.
6:54 pm
hello, it looks like next weekend our weather will be cooler and unsettled, but until then, it's pretty much as you were. yes, the morning may start like this just as they did this morning, but for many of us it'll be coming out of that and we get to see blue sky and temperatures are well above normal for that time of year. satellite picture from earlier shows we saw cloud through northern ireland and western scotland and produced a bit of patchy rain earlier, but it has edged a bit further east but any rain through this area here will die away tonight, but we are left with an area of cloud and its cloud mist and fog, and is developing elsewhere, so poor visibility widespread than the recent nights. fog could be dense in places, just northern scotland and southeast england seeing clear skies and rural spots will have temperatures below freezing with a touch of frost, it's a fairly chilly
6:55 pm
night out there. looking at the big picture for part two of the weekend, high pressure very much in control, but not too many isobars, so the winds are light, and that means it's going to take a while to shift this low cloud mist and fog that'll be around for some of us to start the day, and again, some of the fog may be dense in places, yorkshire may want to hold on into the afternoon, where it does not clear of course, that holds the temperature down compared with elsewhere. you may see some patchy rain reaching to the western isles later on, and more breeze compared to elsewhere, and temperatures may be a degree or so down compared to recent days but still best of the sunshine in england and wales about 16 or 17 degrees. it could well be yours. high pressure still around for most of us going into monday, this weather front though is lurking close to northern scotland, so with this, you will see some cloud and patchy rain. fog patches around to start the day probably clearing a little more readily than recent days, probably last to go from parts of eastern scotland and north east england,
6:56 pm
so away from northern scotland in northern isles where the threat is seeing outbreaks of rain for most of us, it'll turn out into another glorious afternoon, lifting the temperatures that they can into the warm spots towards the high teens. look at the trend as we go deeper into the week, little downward trend in temperatures, more cloud showing up, changing to unsettled weather, looks like it'll take hold it next weekend. that's your forecast.
