7:31 pm
the headlines this evening.... an historic win for wales against england in what may have been the 6 nations decider... there's no love for scotland in paris as their 20 year wait for a win in france continues... and burnley put a big dent in spurs' title hopes — beating them 2—1 in the premier league. also coming up in the programme... manchester city win the first silverware of the women's domestic season — the league cup — beating holders arsenal on penalties.... and britain'sjonny brownlee wins the men's eliminator race at the super league triathlon event in singapore.
7:32 pm
good evening, welcome to sportsday where the players are still on the pitch at the principality stadium after that huge win for wales over england... it ended 21—13 in cardiff — after wales produced a second half comeback to win a record—breaking 12th consecutive test match. we thought we were going live to cardiff, that is not happening at the moment that we're going to have a look at the match now and see what happens. this is a fixture that consumes a whole city, on days like this in cardiff rugby whole city, on days like this in cardiff rug by ta kes whole city, on days like this in cardiff rugby takes over the centre but the welsh capital has not seen a win over ingrid here in six years and that hope and expectation changed with one kick and run. tom currie is the youngest player on any tea m currie is the youngest player on any team in this tournament but this is

the anticipation that made him england to‘s breakthrough forwards and with the world cup now once again that is a sense for both teams of new players making strides. for wales this was gareth anscombe is ‘s chance. one square with change everything. —— one score could change everything. but touchdown from hill would take wales to the six nations summit but with seconds to go they scaled greater heights. josh adams! fantastic! absolutely sensational! somehow from the ear josh adams controlled dan biggar‘s ci’oss
7:34 pm
josh adams controlled dan biggar‘s cross kick. this is the perfect text match when any rope for wales, the first time they had done it since 1910 before a nation with rugby at its heart it is this one means the most. we created a lot of problems for ourselves, i don't think england credit anything. we were much better in the half and we credit anything. we were much better in the - half and we got in the second half and we got stronger as the game went on and i spoke to the guys in the changing rooms and said the pain we went through last week and how hard we trained blade dividends. we were tired and there was an opportunity to exploit england in one area. the aerial game as we get today and we did a lot of practice on that. we we re did a lot of practice on that. we were technically very good. did a lot of practice on that. we were technically very goodm did a lot of practice on that. we were technically very good. it is a game of smart motions and we let ourselves down. they beat is in the

air, penalty count was strongly against us and that gives the opposition, the position a chance to score points and that is what happens. it was a tough game. i don't know whether we lost our heads but they put us under a lot of pressure. you're always good to get some tough calls on these games away from home and that happened tonight. contrasting emotions when the two coaches. let's head over to cardiff injoin quick sports coaches. let's head over to cardiff in join quick sports correspondence. get it was reflected after full time? you can probably tell the prince pouted stadium now, they have turned the lights off and it has emptied of but the atmosphere is just being transported to other parts of cardiff and other parts of wales. with so much of the build—up to this game, two weeks of talk and ba nter to this game, two weeks of talk and banter and speculation, i actually began wondering if the match could live up to the hype but in the last 15 minutes or so it really did. what you have to reflect, what we have to
7:36 pm
consider, is the immense composure of this welsh side, to keep composure, to keep going to your processes eve n composure, to keep going to your processes even though you are behind any match like this with 12 or 13 minutes to go. that speaks of a team with huge self belief and confidence and that derives, not from what happened just an hour ago here, but from all the months and victories they had put together in the winning sequence. lots of people in wales in cardiff will say this much matters. it doesn't really matter what wales do throughout the rest of the year as long as they can beat england. much of everybody shares that opinion and a lot of people will be looking forward to possibly wales winning the grand slam, may be the world cup, but tonight, certainly in cardiff, all that matters is that wales won this game. how much did wales, i mean they clearly won it, but debate when it ordered england lose it? that is a controversial question and i know lots of my welsh
7:37 pm
family will be shouting at the tv. but it ingrid elizabeth? how —— but did england lose this? england were not just did england lose this? england were notjust in points on the point but in the game by half—time, they attacked the game with real physical intensity, towing themselves into tackles and they stuck to this idea of basically kicking the ball to win a territorial battle and it was working. but through the second half it stopped working. we do not see the ball get to the centre or ball in hand, we do not see them running. jonny may hardly had a runabout from one kick you chase down. what wales did wasa one kick you chase down. what wales did was a structure and plan and they kept to it. so often in these big games it is the last 10—15 minutes that really count the maybe england had the first 15 minutes,

maybe the first a0 but at times in the second half they had to change their plan and their idea, think of a way of keeping the ball and retaining their composure. kicked it away too often. i am not really convinced the referee was that decisive on penalties but this welsh composure and instinct to win games, however they need to, i think that really ca m e however they need to, i think that really came to the four, combined of course with the incredible atmosphere that you get in cardiff. thank you very much. well scotland went to france knowing they hadn't won a match in the six nations in paris since 1999... they were, however taking on a team withjust 3 wins from their last 19 tests. however, the form book went out the window as france put in a stirring performance to earn a bonus—point, 27—10 win at the parc de princes, as hannah lupton reports. amidst the flags and fire two familiar foes. it has been 20 years since scotland last won in paris and victory

could reignite their championship. france were humiliated by england last time out. if their confidence was low, it was boosted by ntamack. french rugby at its best! when dealing with a wounded animal, beware of the bite. scotland lost a number of key players due to injury but missing chances did not help the cause. the home side were in control despite having two tries ruled out. the greatest tribe that never was. —— try. they led by seven points at the break. scotland needed to respond but france picked up where they left off. hughet pushed the men in white further ahead. the men in blue did not look like scoring. try number three from france was all about forward power with gregor alldrit making it over. ali price found space for scotland's first and final try.

at first and final try. last something for the travelling fa ns at last something for the travelling fa ns to at last something for the travelling fans to cheer. france got their final try in the eighth minute of overtime. that old french player returned. scotland's wait for a party in paris continues. we look at our performance and it was certainly worse than expected. france played well. i felt they brought more energy to the game than we did, especially early on and that got the crowd behind them and they played with confidence. it was not a good enough start for us on either half. there were times we played well, at the end of the first—half and second half but it is not good enough at this level. we feel really good because we have been through tough days and now we have an important win. we just need to get back to work on monday and try and prepare

two difficult away games. there's plenty of action in the women's six nations this weekend. wales host england tomorrow. france are up against scotland in an 8 o'clock kick off this evening while italy playing host to ireland. italy are looking to keep their unbeaten start in this year's six nations and held an early 10—nil lead but ireland have been fighting back through two tries from eemear considine. then the visitors went ahead through anna caplice in an action—packed first half. it's currently all square, 22—22 at half—time and you can watch all the action on the bbc via the red button. well that's the six nations covered. hugh can tell us now what's been happening in the premier league today. very eventful in very eventful in rugby very eventful in rugby union, very eventful in rugby union, very very eventful in rugby union, very eventful in the premier league and none more so than the top of the table. spurs had the chance to move two points behind leaders manchester city with a win
7:42 pm
at burnley in today's early kick off but they lost 2—1. it's burnley‘s sixth win in their last nine league matches, and they're unbeaten since boxing day. spurs manager mauricio pochettino wasn't happy with referee mike dean after the match — we'll talk about that in a moment — but first james burford reports on a missed opportunity for tottenham. there cannot be many better sides for spurs fan than talisman harry kane back from injury however it is not the most welcoming place. kane's return to the tottenham team brings with it more than just a touch of class, on this occasion tom heaton responded in kind. burnley‘s real strength lies in physicality and set pieces sets them apart. this headerfrom chris wood makes it four goals in the last four games. spurs were unhappy about the awarding of a corner in the first place. determined not to throw it away danny rose threw it forward to kane. rarely in this position the england captain make a mistakes. not a bad way to might
7:43 pm
you return to action. but this day belongs to the home side. burnley are not yet out of the relegation fight. just how wasted a opportunity for tottenham? so a blow to any hope spurs may still have of winning the title. their manager mauricio pochettino doesn't consider his side as contenders anymore and he certainly wasn't happy after the match... you can see pictures of him remonstrating with referee mike dean here. pochettino looks clearly frustrated but he didn't elaborate on what was troubling him in the post match interview. now that we are all relaxed, it is difficult to explain but i think what happened on the pitch happened on the pitch. we cannot blame anyone, we need to blame ourselves.
7:44 pm
i need to blame myself first, when the defeat happened it was in our hands to when but we should be doing better and we need to blame ourselves. we are not a side like man city, we know that but we have to be effective with the players we have got. i think we have good players and i think we were affected today. we wanted to get behind them and affect them as many time as we could and i think we constantly asked questions and we were outstanding. elsewhere newcastle united got a home win over bottom side huddersfield, it finished 2—0. a third straight win at home, the first time that has happened since april of last year. they were given the lead just 59 seconds into the second half and another got six minutes later made it to. huddersfield had to play over an

hour of the match with ten men after the captain was given a straight red card. really pleased and i think we needed to win. we did it and we created a lot of chances. we crossed the barfor times created a lot of chances. we crossed the bar for times and created a lot of chances. we crossed the barfor times and we had chances during the whole game so when they we re during the whole game so when they were passing at the beginning, we still had chances and when they had ten players we had more control. really happy with the performance of the players and the way we were playing. the redcoat changed the game and it was not easy to defend. —— the red card. there was only ten players on the pitch and before the red card we had possibilities. after red card we had possibilities. after red card we had possibilities. after red card it is always difficult. there was in about the match at the fatality stadium as bournemouth against wolves finished one of the three penalties were awarded in this

match, two of them scored, when mr full the first was josh king match, two of them scored, when mr full the first wasjosh king from bournemouth. he owned and scored the penalty. a penalty was shot through after matt doherty was but done in the box. then bournemouth was awarded their second penalty and josh king stood up to take the penalty. this time he clipped the outside of the post, disappointment for him and that is the second penalty he has missed in his last ten. mentally we were good today. it was a tough game and wolves played their way and they do it really well but tactically we were very good. we we re but tactically we were very good. we were not fluent as i say at the start, but i thought we were dog—eared and mentality ways we were good. it was a shame we cannot get the win we wanted to but we will ta ke the win we wanted to but we will take the point and move on. the win we wanted to but we will take the point and move onlj the win we wanted to but we will take the point and move on. i think bournemouth will go for the game.
7:47 pm
some times when team is up in control and sometimes there is chances but i think all the players we re really chances but i think all the players were really committed to the game, so when ic my players so committed i ama so when ic my players so committed i am a happy, happy manager. the pressure has continued to the pressure continues to mount on leicester manager claude puel, after his side were beaten a—1 by crystal palace in the late kick off. michy batshuayi put palace ahead — deflecting injames mcarthur‘s effort. his first goal for the club. leicester improved after half time though and equalised through defenderjonny evans. but the home side were level forjust six minutes. wilfried zaha making it 2—1. a penalty from palace captain luka milivojevic made it 3—1, before zaha got his second in stoppage time. a—1 it finished. palace up to 13th — and just two points behind leicester. so let's have a look at what does to the table then.
7:48 pm
here is the top half and tottenham hotspur will not be happy and of course, liverpool are five points ahead and have a game in hand against manchester united tomorrow. ahead of manchester city will be facing chelsea in the league cup final tomorrow. wolverhampton wanderers stay in eighth. bournemouth tenth after their draw. the bottom half of the table, huddersfield still rooted firmly to the bottom. they are 1a points from safety after the defeat to newcastle united, newcastle are in 15th and stay behind burnley after their victory over spurs. right that pretty much wraps up the day's premier league news. over to lizzie now for the day's other football and the rest of the day's sport. a busy day in the championship with 11 games... leaders norwich city twice came from behind to beat bristol city 3—2. elsewhere there were wins for brentford, leeds — who are just two points behind norwich, middlesbrough, preston and sheffield wednesday.

and manchester city could do the double after their women's team won the continental league cup today. they beat holders arsenal on penalties. jo currie reports from bramhall lane. this final had promised a lot. arguably the two form teams in the final battering together for a major piece of silverware. we got an edge that went all the way down to the wire. the match started slowly after an eventful a5 minutes and city started to find their rhythm when a floated free kick found its way to a head but only directed onto the bar. jill scott tried her luck but the keeper was equal to it before arsenal's vivianne miedema flashed a volley just wide at the other end. there was time for beckie to find it with this effort but the match was destined for time and after that failed to provide a winner. penalties were calling.
7:51 pm
after both teams played their opening spot kicks. lauren had vaulted first. it was leah williamson's turn but she cannot find a way past the keeper. there was another miss and the keeper was again too strong. it was left to the canadian international beckie to score from the spot and secure their third league title. today's victory could be the start of another historic treble for manchester city with the club still in the running for the fa cup and league title two. however the celebrations may have to be cut short with the majority of the squad disappearing off into international duty first thing tomorrow morning. let's have a quick look at some of the other sports stories around today. great britain's women's hockey team claimed their first win in the new pro league after a 3—2 shootout victory over china. anna toman scored the winner to claim an extra point and move britain up to seventh in the 9 team league.

which gets bigger every year and the game's governing body is hoping the excitement will persuade thousands more women and girls to pick up a ball for the first time. hundreds of so—called inner warrior sessions are being held across the uk and our very own mike bushell has been to one of them in manchester. across the land the chase is on for the egg—shaped ball and to find more girls and women wanting to give rugby a go. and even on a freezing winters night hundreds forgot about the snow and cold, as some like charlotte picked up a rugby ball for the first time. it is nice to know that i am able to play rugby. it is something i have never considered, a lot of the stigma around girls playing rugby has been removed and especially in clubs like this and in manchester and the uni and stuff. it is a good challenge. this is chaos, the biggest match i had ever been involved in. there is no structure. it is the thrill of picking up

a ball and running with it. forward passes are allowed on this occasion, it is just about getting people to get a feel of the ball. i thought it was going to be hard but we were just running and having fun. i thought it was quite rough but i feel like i really liked it because i like tackling and things like that. the session helps to build on the excitement surrounding the six nations, especially when you have england's top points scorer this season on hand to inspire you. but there were not any sessions like this when she was starting out. people think rugby is contact. this is the beauty of being a warrior, you have the opportunity to use a rugby ball but you are playing games that you used to play in football and netball. it is about getting girls involved in the game, as a whole rugby recognises the value of different shapes and sizes, so this is a nice opportunity for them to play with their friends and have a go. it might be a chance for people to fit in where they don't fit in other sports.
7:56 pm
there are hundreds of sessions being held right across the country and since inner warrior started some 12,000 women and girls have been picking up a ball for the first time. when everyone is here you feel like you are family and altogether playing. it is not that competitive so we can just have fun and the snow does not bother us. ijust love the snow. in the end we got more competitive. in these inner warrior sessions you can let loose, find space and dive over the line for a glorious try. well if you have long enough arms. there is always one that forgets a line. there are two games

in rugby league super league that's all from sportsday. we'll have more at half past seven. what a glorious day it was across the eastern side of the country, eg ofan the eastern side of the country, eg of an east—west divide is a quite disappointing across western pipes and workload further south and east. glorious sunshine as the mist and do way but further west we had blood in disguise. beautiful spring there with the daffodils out. the culprit is this weather front which worked its way eastwards, there were some light and patchy rain whereas there are the east we are seeing clear skies. that weather front is continuing to fizzle out in beat and a legacy of broken cloud. skies will be gradually clearing but what that will do further east, certainly when we have the clear skies there is a low temperatures too far away and it

is going to be italy at night, below freezing in some places, so we will see with late wednesday returned is a mess and bog which could be quite dense this morning. this is the area of high pressure bringing the spine and one mother, keeping the weather fa ns and one mother, keeping the weather fans out at bay so it looks like is going to be another fine one for about two of the weekend. looks like western areas will see somewhat sunshine. we have to content with the low cloud and mess and fog with the low cloud and mess and fog with the morning period, some could cause travel disruption. might linger on in eastern counties of england and eastern scotland. most places will see that sunshine break through and it will be pretty widespread into the afternoon. temperatures may be a degree or so down on today's values. i think it top temperature of 16 degrees somewhere in the south—east probably. high pressure with us into the start of next week bringing a little more cloud and rain into the north—west coiner of the country,
7:59 pm
claudia skies, breezy for north—west scotland. elsewhere, after a chilly start with a bit of mist and fog around that showed clear to leave another widespread sunny day and very mild again. we could see 17 or 18 degrees again. it will be slightly warm as well further north and west. as we continue to the week it stays fine and settles but notice the temperatures beginning to drop close to this seasonal norm. it better rain in the forecast because we have lost suddenly winds and pick up we have lost suddenly winds and pick upa we have lost suddenly winds and pick up a westerly of the atlantic. it will feed some weather fronts with showers. a glorious strike to the next week and things were cool down little as the week wears on.
