that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news, it's time for sportsday. hello, and welcome to sportsday. sarri's wembley humiliation — has player power left his position as chelsea manager untenable? a wash—out in the west indies as england's women lose again in india. and joshua on avoiding a banana skin with the big baby in the big apple. normally, they say, i don't listen to it, it distract you, but i know him more than any other fighter.
6:33 pm
hello, and welcome to sportsday. (good evening. it's an unprecedented sight in football. a player undermining their manager in such a public way. it all unravelled for chelsea when goalkeeper kepa arrizabalaga refused to be substituted in an incident which overshadowed manchester city's league cup win at wembley on sunday. this was the sequence of events. despite being treated for cramp in extra time, kepa was insisitent he was fine to continue. but sarri wanted to make the change before the penalty shoot out loss, with the score still goalless during extra time. replacement willy caballero was primed on the sidelines to come on. but kepa refused to follow instructions from the touchline, leaving his manager furious. the italian marching down the tunnel at one point, with his authority undermined, and the world watching.
6:34 pm
you can see how angry he was, in a tough season for the italian as we'll discuss in a moment. and then to top it off, kepa winking at the camera, with the look of a man who'd won the battle with his manager. here was maurizio sarri's explanation of what happened. i understood that he had cramp, and so i understood that he had cramp, and soi i understood that he had cramp, and so i didn't want the goalkeeper to have penalties in that physical condition. i realised that the situation after three or four minutes, when the doctor arrived again to the bench. in the meantime, i wanted willy caballero on the pitch, and the goalkeeper wanted only to let me know that he was in condition to go to the penalties. so, it was only a big misunderstanding. kepa was right, but in the wrong way, i think.
6:35 pm
so, sarri and chelsea trying to paint a united front. there is a growing feeling in football that this is indicative of what it's going on in football at the moment. what has been the fallout and the reaction to what we saw in full yesterday? for all the football we watch in this newsroom, it still throws up in incidents like this. it is something we have never seen before, a player refusing to come off as a substitute. the immediate reaction to this exchange must pretty remarkable, because we don't often get football clubs immediately releasing a statement on twitter. this is what chelsea put out within a few minutes of chelsea lifting the trophy. they said... the goalkeeper himself also released a statement not long after the final
6:36 pm
whistle, and also use the word misunderstood. he also said he has full respect for the coach sarri and his authority. both the club and the players and gus was down to kepa making a recovery from the crampy experience. but many people are not buying that, because there was some logic to bringing that substitute on. wella colour berra was the player stripped and ready to come on, and he is something of a penalty saving specialist, as he showed for manchester city in this competition's final three seasons ago. you might even have known were some others are from a team it's like to put their spot kicks as well. he might have had eight psychological advantage too. let's have a look at some of the erection over the last 2a hours. jose mourinho, the former chelsea manager, said that kepa has put the

clu b manager, said that kepa has put the club ina manager, said that kepa has put the club in a fragile situation. he said it is also sad for chelsea, and for maurizio sarri in particular. chris sutton, speaking on five live, was not very sympathetic, in his usual self. he said the goalkeeper is a disgrace and should be sacked. lots of reaction on twitter as well. i will pick up this one, because it is interesting. you mention about the way that football is going in modern times, and that chelsea's model, he says, makes a manager almost as possible, because the change manager so possible, because the change manager so often. it is not long ago that we had antonio conte leading them to the premier league title. has that changed the culture but these pairs? you certainly wonder. david preece, the former goalkeeper and journalist joins us tonight. david, chelsea see it as joins us tonight. david, chelsea see itasa joins us tonight. david, chelsea see it as a big misunderstanding. you have played in the position. it is not really for a goalkeeper to decide when he comes off the field of play, surely? it looks as though
6:38 pm
he has deliberately undermined his manager in the situation. yes, we can say that. i mean, before all the state m e nts can say that. i mean, before all the statements were made after the match, what happened could have went either way. it could have been a tactical substitution, or it could have been one that was taken because of the injury and the cramps to kepa. now, in the second instance of the india, i think it is a collective responsibility with the medical staff, manager and player, but ultimately, if it is not a tactical substitution, if it is solely down to the worry about an injury hindering him in the penalty shoot out, then the final decision comes with the player. if it is not a had not which you have to take the responsibility out of the pia's hands and you have to take the responsibility out of the player's hands can get on with the game and still be at his best for that penalty shoot out, then i think i have to stick with the goalkeeper. but nobody comes out of this looking good, simply because of the

dramatics of it. it is really interesting you say that, because it feels in that sequence of events was perhaps a moment where he should have perhaps followed the instructions his manager. joe, i guess this is indicative as well to what has been the latest in what has been a difficult season so far for maurizio sarri at chelsea. we can't ta ke maurizio sarri at chelsea. we can't take this incident in isolation, because things have started to unravel for maurizio sarri as chelsea manager since the turn of the year, because he was actually a revelation at the start of the season. he had chelsea level on points with liverpool in taken place after 11 games, and even in december, chelsea were the first tea m december, chelsea were the first team this season to inflict defeat on manchester city. but it is sarri's failure to adapt to setbacks which had made the support base get more frustrated. the last 4—0 and then six nil to manchester city and then six nil to manchester city and the return fixture, and then in the

last week, these two might cup defeats to both the manchester clu bs. defeats to both the manchester clubs. and though maurizio sarri has taken chelsea's training session today, we will have to wait and see how many more he takes. the as job was saying earlier, there is a sense that managers are somewhat disposable at chelsea, and we know that roman abramovich has not attended as many matches this season. as a something of a power vacuum emerging at chelsea? and are they placing actors their position to step in? —— the players are seeing it as their position to step in? de what is that it is a club waiting to be sold, and that these eight lots of insecurity around the place. like said, there is a power vacuum as well, but this is in the dna of chelsea. this is what happens to managers. before we hear of a manager being sacked, before be here even bad results, we get the undress from the dressing room that comes
6:41 pm
out, and it is the same dance with almost every manager, and it is right back from jose mourinho's first stint at the club. from my experience, it sounds like there is some sort of dysfunctional dressing room there, and you are right, as soon as those players are unhappy, are quitea soon as those players are unhappy, are quite a few of those players are unhappy, it looks like it is the beginning of the end for the manager. thank you. really interesting to hear a goalkeeper siding with a goalkeeper. that was former player and journalist david preece joining former player and journalist david preecejoining us former player and journalist david preece joining us tonight. fundamentally, it turned out to be a great day for manchester city yesterday, because they landed their first piece of silverware in what could be a quadruple season for them, and league rivals liverpool dropping points against manchester united yesterday. this is the jigsaw city
