hello and welcome to sportsday, with me katherine downes and ben mundy. the headlines this evening... your move, liverpool... manchester city take over at the top of the premier league. 100 not out — roger federer wins his landmark atp tour title in dubai. four yesterday — asha philip leads the way for more great britain medals at the european indoor athletics tonight. we'll check in on the action in glasgow. also coming up on the programme... windies come back fighting in st lucia — could they draw level with england in the one day series? and, the "ultimate challenge" for england — they prepare to take on the world champions usa at the she believes cup.
6:31 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. we'll we' ll start we'll start with all of the primarily action. —— premier league action. the premier league top spot has changed hands yet again this afternoon — manchester city back out in front, after they beat bournemouth 1—0. bournemouth held city off in the first half — but riyad mahrez scored at the start of the second. so city keep up the pressure on liverpool — but they lost kevin de bruyne and john stones to injury. de bruyne a particular problem as the season reaches a climax — pep guardiola has said he'll be out for a while again — but he was pleased with the performance. that was one of our best performances we have played.
6:32 pm
they are incredible. we defended so well. we created enough chances. we did incredible. every movement with one sense, i'm so delighted. i just want to say thank you to the players because they are absolutely incredible. it is difficult. you want to be competitive in the game and i think that was the way for us today to make the game tied and get numbers in the fence and show good organisation and mentality and hang in there as long as we could. the only frustration for us today is their goal is only frustration for us today is theirgoal is an only frustration for us today is their goal is an ugly goal, which is and unlike man city go because i think we have done very well apart from that. —— unlike a manchester city goal. liverpool play everton in the merseyside derby tomorrow — hoping to climb back into the lead.

there was late drama in the north london derby — because arsenal were awarded a penalty in the final minutes — but it was saved by hugo lloris. a missed chance for arsenal — but it saved spurs from a third straight defeat. patrick gearey was watching. the closer spurs and arsenal get, the more this match matters. these two neighbours are separated by only four points, so surely every inch, every second would have to be earned, but somehow here, aaron ramsey had an age. in his last derby for arsenal, he made the moment last. tottenham eventually emerged from hibernation, but eriksson made leno a hero, senses and reactions, heightened. a stalling spurs needed a push and got a shove. it came from a penalty, arsenal claimed kane was offside, but his only question was which side. goalkeeper‘s left was right, game on. it's direction remain wildly unpredictable, 89th minute and the referee saw
6:34 pm
enough in this for an arsenal penalty. in the race for a champions league place, what a moment now for pierre. and a bigger one still for hugo. tottenham's defence completed the rescue act. for a while, everybody lost themselves. lucas only came on a half—time but was off before full—time. red card. the last act of a fixture exhausting to be a part of and almost as tiring just to watch. some things you deserve to get and sometimes you don't deserve it and you get it. the most important is the mentality. impressive for me. i want to say thank you because i didn't see it. i think it is good and we need to be looking forward and try to arrive in good conditions for the next game.
6:35 pm
not good because maybe we can't win... our chances on the game, the last penalty for us, but i am very proud of them. i think they are in good spirits. and that missed chance for aubameyang means that arsenal have fallen out of the top four — replaced by manchester united. some cracking goals at old trafford — but united got one more than southampton, winning it 3—2. romelu lu ka ku with two of those goals. and they're up into the champions league places. it is one of those games, it had everything. it was an open game. they came here to beat us. we should have been one or two up in the first five minutes to be fair. we started really well and then they settled down and they scored on the first two strikes.
6:36 pm
they were unbelievable strikes by the boys but i thought my team, we did fantastic. the boys did great in the second half. the team showed that they really wanted to get something here. two situations in the first half, it be a penalty. that would change and keep the game completely because it is much more difficult for man united. second half, we got beat in defeated by the quality of one fantastic lukaku. he is amazing. but we never stopped working for a point and we never stop thinking or believing in ourselves and that we can get something here. some important changes at the top of the table. more misery for bottom side huddersfield. they were beaten 1—0 by brighton — florin andone with the header with just over 12 minutes left to play. it means huddersfield have only had one win
6:37 pm
in their last 15 league games — and they're 13 points from safety. totally angry, to be fair. we lost the game because of a free kick, and one situation in premier league, when you are not switched on, you cannot allow this. this is an adult situation. we were not switched on. in the premier league, it is from the first minute until the last minute. iam the first minute until the last minute. i am angry about it because it isa minute. i am angry about it because it is a free kick. normally, we should get them out of this game. the late kick off is well under way. west ham v newcastle — and west ham took the lead afterjust six minutes, thanks to declan rice and mark noble with the second — 2—0 there. and in the day's other premier league results, crystal palace beat burnley 3—1, and wolves beat cardiff 2—0. those are the full results of the
6:38 pm
day. so let's have a look at what does to the table then manchester city two points in front at the top — liverpool, of course, play tomorrow. tottenham seem to have stalled a little in third place — and manchester united are closing in on them. they're up into the top four, after arsenal failed to convert that penalty at wembley earlier. while down at the other end, huddersfield still on just 14 points after that loss to brighton on the south coast. fulham play chelsea tomorrow and cardiff are still in danger, losing to wolves today. right that pretty much wraps up the day's premier league news. over to ben now for the day's other football and the rest of the day's sport. thank you. the lead has changed hands in the championship too this afternoon... norwich back to the top, after a 3—1 win over millwall. they're two points clear of leeds, who won yesterday. here are all the other results from today for you. the ones to pick out, a huge win for aston villa. 4—0 against derby who stickjust outside the play—off spots. and costly losses for bottom sides ipswich and bolton, while rotherham, the other team in the relegation zone, picked up a win against
6:39 pm
blackburn to move closer to safety. just one goal in today's scottish premiership action to tell you about. ryan flynn scored it for bottom side st mirren — as they won their first league game of 2019 at home to livingston. while kilmarnock missed the chance to move within a point of third place aberdeen — it ended goal—less for them against motherwell. a scottish cup quarterfinal taking place right now. neil lennon — in caretaker charge of celtic — back at hibernian. it's currently hibs zero, celtic one. james forrest with the goal. about 20 minutes to play there. england's women face the "ultimate challenge" tonight when they take on the number one team in the world. that's according to lionesses boss phil neville. they play hosts, the usa in the shebelieves cup. and asjo currie explains, could win the tournament if results go their way. in the home of country to take
6:40 pm
on the host country, england hope they can provide the soundtrack to success and in a world cup year finding your rhythm is everything. the headline act on wednesday was beth mead, her wonder goal winner against brazil. it means england are now in touching distance of silverware. if they beat the usa and japan draw in brazil, there will be crowned shebelieves champions, something well within their grasp according to one of england's most experienced players. the big games, it's what we look forward to and we want to play the big games because we know we have a chance of winning them and we can compete and play against these teams. standing in their way are formidable opponents, the team everybody wants to replicate, and a side this summer that england probably have to beat if they want to win the world cup. the usa are top of the world. the usa are three times and reigning world champions, dominating women's football

from the year dot. tonight's match takes place at the site of the tennessee titans and the crowd here know how to host a showdown. i can't speak personally to any of the parties. hopefully it will be rowdy and people will get their day drinking on and they're tailgating on and it will be a good atmosphere. it is a good opportunity to replicate something that is a bit on the line and with a rowdy atmosphere. come tonight, like all the best country songs, england will be hoping these americans will be crying into their beer. jo currie, bbc news, nashville. and you can see how england get on against the world champions on bbc two tonight from 9.45. it's also available via the bbc sport website, app, connected tvs and iplayer. nashville looks like fun. tennis, and yet another milestone day in the phenomenal

career of roger federer. 20 grand slam singles titles, he's won a record six atp finals and the davis cup with switzerland. and now he's won his 100th title on the atp tour. he did it by beating stefanos sitsipas in straight sets at the dubai tennis championships. he's only the second man to reach 100 titles — jimmy connors has 109, you wouldn't bet against federer passing that record before he calls time on his career. he finally got there in the end. still to come on the programme... we'll have all the latest from the world track cycling championships in poland, can britain bounce back from a disappointing day yesterday? and we hear from judy murray about a new scheme to get more women and girls playing tennis. looking at taking our spirit into areas where you might not expect to find it and what you might not find coaches because if we can train more

people up for more diverse backgrounds, we can spread tennis into those diverse backgrounds as well. the european indoor athletics championships are continuing this evening in glasgow. after the gold medals last night from laura muir and katerina johnson thompson, britain has high hopes of more success. adam wild reports on the days events so far. the morning after in glasgow, and for some, a moment to reflect. katerina johnson thompson did so from the commentary box, nee emerson as a spectator. their medals won, now to watch other british champions. asha philip defending her 60 metres title, easing through her first heat, inspired by last night's success. after what laura did, defending her title, i was screaming at my television, ifelt like i was pushing her the whole way. nee and melissa both did amazing. it was a great evening

for the ladies. britain has the defending champion in the men's event. richard kilty‘s presence here provided one of the competitions most intriguing subplots. initially left out of the gb squad, a shock reprieve, now qualifying for the semis. if his 60 metre journey has been up and down, that is exactly how andy pozzi has made his career, gold medallist gold medallist in the hurdles two years ago, here he was qualifying in his heat. i wouldn't be here if i didn't think i could compete to a good level. i love championships. i knew whatever came before was irrelevant when you get into the situation and this environment. it is where i feel like i should be. bradshaw, first attempt... goes clear! well done. it took holly bradshaw a single jump to qualify for the pole vault final. less straightforward for abigail, but she is through to the long jump final. and with tim duckworth going well,

britain may soon have more success on which to reflect. well lets go live to glasgow now, the evening session under way from bbc two for you at the moment. that is just chris baker who bbc two for you at the moment. that isjust chris baker who had a bbc two for you at the moment. that is just chris baker who had a failed attempt on the high jump. i is just chris baker who had a failed attempt on the highjump. i think his competition is over. we have also seen tim duckworth go great as well. he is in third place at the three events. women's 60 metres semi finals — featuring asher philip for great britain. and the mens 60 m semi final — richard kilty will get the home crowd going. you can watch that live on bbc two right now. i'm sure they will get the home crowd going. england have been crushed by west indies in the final one dayer in st lucia — beaten by seven wickets in a match that only lasted just over a0 overs in total eoin morgan's side

england. —— one more match to go. now to rugby union... exeter chiefs stay top of the premiership after a hard—fought victory over sale sharks. but the game of the day was at welford road... leicester tigers managed to hang on to beat neighbours wasps. austin halewood watched the action. through the years, welford road has been the setting for plenty of leicester success but, it's been a while since the tigers roared. and while wasps are struggling themselves this season, they flew out of the blocks the quickest, marcus watson given too much room to finish in the corner. a mistake the tigers wouldn't learn from. watson this time breaking from deep, and shown the outside, a route he took with open arms. the winger in for his second before the break. leicester were clearly missing their internationals, but in the absence of george ford, brotherjoe stepped up to the plate. the fly half's finger tips enough to put the tigers ahead.

we are warming up at the fed cup in front of a crowd. women and girls dropping out of tennis at a rate of 30% over the last decade, judy is determined to expire the next generation. as well as focus on increasing engagement. we had a sump latest with us this morning tour from sporting equals and from the must win sports association and from the youth sport trust, looking at taking our export into every guess where you might not expect to find it and where you might not find coaches, because if we can train more people up for more diverse backgrounds, we can spread tennis into those backgrounds as well. throughout the session, she has given us so many little games and even as adults, we have been so engaged. she's also made a competitive and remaining us that children do enjoy competition and it doesn't have to be in actual game attendance. it can be something as

simple as catch. we asked youth workers are role models for the girls. we want to promote ethnic diversity. we try to encourage the asian girls to come out and do something more active and engaged in sports because tennis is one of the things that doesn't really get played much in our community, so we are trying to promote that more. but it is not just are trying to promote that more. but it is notjust female coaches who feel inspired. naomi is a huge fan of duty and write a letter to her expressing her desire to become a tennis coach and wanting more girls to get involved in tennis. she really inspired me. i used to watch my brother play and he was the one who inspired me to play tennis. sol tried it and it was really good so i carried on. there are a lot of boys playing, so it would be nice to get a lot of girls playing. i'm so used to people writing tojimmy and andy
