when i was growing up, watching the tv and watching football games, i would never see anyone that was like me. i wanted to change that. i wanted to be that person. i'm a 16—year—old black, muslim female footballer. and ifelt like my story needed to be heard. if you ask anyone, what would you imagine a muslim girl doing, the last thing that they would say is football or any sports in general. people kind of view us in a specific way. it's like, ok, you're a muslim girl, you cover up and you should just focus on your studies, just keep your head down, keep a low profile and just do your own thing. every team i played for, or every school that i went to, there was never a muslim girl that played with me. it was like i was the only one.

"ninja, terrorist, you should be in the kitchen, you shouldn't be "on the football pitch, sports isn't for you." it's quite funny to me, like, i would just walk away and laugh. but on days where i'm not in the mood, it would just be really annoying. it's like a voice that you just keep hearing in the back of your head. it's... yeah. when i play football, ifeel free. i feel like every weight on my shoulder is lifted. it's like, no matter how many problems i have going on at the time, none of it matters when i'm playing. what i would say to any young muslim girl out there is that people's opinion should never have power over you. at the end of the day, if you feel like you want to do something and you're passionate
