from his hospital bed. please pray for myself, for me and my daughter. hopefully she will be so much better. under tight security, the man accused of the shooting on friday was today brought to court to be charged with murder. ajudge has ruled that brenton tarrant‘s face should not be shown. the 28—year—old wore a prison gown and handcuffs and made a hand gesture linked to white supremacism in the dock. the attacks brought chaos to christchurch, it took 36 minutes from the first emergency call for the suspect to be apprehended. naeem rashid was killed alongside his son, talha, in the al noor mosque. he was seen in a video of the attack apparently trying to tackle the gunman before he was shot. his death was confirmed by the government of pakistan, his home country.
8:02 pm
there, his brother told the bbc he was a hero. i saw that video and the first thing i wanted to see was the look in his eyes. i did not see one iota of fear in those eyes. and that made me proud. what a brave man he was. as she met some of the families who have lost their loved ones, jacinda ardern pledged to tighten new zealand's gun laws, which unlike britain, don't include a ban on owning semiautomatic assault weapons. one of the issues we are facing is that the guns that were used in this case appear to have been modified. that is a challenge that police have been facing and that is a challenge that we will look to address in changing our laws. there is also a more immediate challenge — making this community feel safe and united.
8:03 pm
after all the fear and violence the city experienced on friday, this is the natural heartfelt response. people wanting to come and stand together, to grieve together and show their solidarity. they want to help those whose lives had been changed forever. we feel the pain that everyone is going through at the moment. this is something that is very different. we do not experience that in new zealand. it has just touched a lot of hearts in christchurch, for everyone, especially us. we came here to make our life. and ifeel for ourfamily and friends who were killed. they were part of it. with families wanting to bury their loved ones, graves are being prepared. imams are travelling from across the country. a city struck eight years ago by a natural disaster is once again having to mourn incalculable loss. hywel griffith, bbc news, christchurch.

just to let you know, we have been blurring the image of the suspect, brenton tarrant, because a court orderfrom a judge here in new zealand. now that naeem rashid was one of the victims of the attack and he was filmed along with his son and just moments before the attack he was filmed trying to tackle the gunmen. we heard from his brother in the report and he has been speaking to the bbc in pakistan about his brother and how he may have saved lives. tell me, how long had your brother been living with his family in new zealand? he went to new zealand in 2010. it has been nine years now. so, he went there, he
8:05 pm
could not finish his phd, but he started working there and he is —— was working there. he liked living there? he loved living in new zealand. he just loved it. there? he loved living in new zealand. hejust loved it. i have never been there myself but i believe it was maybe not the safest place. i suppose no one in the family could ever imagine something like this would ever happen. no, no. we couldn't imagine not at all. not at all. how did you find out? well, my brother rang me, actually, around nine o'clock in the morning because i was not watching the television and someone i was not watching the television and someone rang i was not watching the television and someone rang him and they were watching the television and then we rang, because one of my younger brothers, the brother—in—law also lives in christchurch, so we rang him and my sister in law who rang
8:06 pm
him and my sister in law who rang him also and then in the evening we found out we had lost him. and what was your reaction when you found out, if you can put it into words? there are no words, really, i can't really describe the feeling. the only person who goes through this kind of a thing can understand this thing, you know? but i feel very proud of my brother really and the way he died. very few people... i wish i could die like him, really. dine like that, he was a brave person and i have heard from people there, there were witnesses and he saved a few lives there by trying to stop that guy. me, my wife, my

children we will all miss him because of his fun loving attitude. he was like, always, after his nephews and nieces, to improve themselves. he was taking interest in theirfamily, in themselves. he was taking interest in their family, in our family, he was a person who was very committed to anything which he wanted to do. he is being hailed as a hero by many people across the world for trying to ta ke people across the world for trying to take down the attacker. have you seen to take down the attacker. have you seen the video, what was your reaction when you sew it? did you failan reaction when you sew it? did you fail an element of pride as well?|j saw fail an element of pride as well?” saw that video and the first thing i wanted to see was the look in his eyes. i did not see an iota of fear in his eyes and that made me proud. what a brave man he was. i knew if i

had any problem, he would be standing with me. i had no doubt about it. but to do it for others, when he could have ran away. what i have been told, there are some other people who he asked tojoin him, but they ran away. but he did it alone anyway. and that speaks volumes about him. he is my hero at least. an australian senator who blamed emigration on the mosque shooting here in christchurch has attacked a teenager who threw an egg on him while he was being interviewed. he was hit by the 17—year—old before a short scuffle takes place between them. the teenager was then restrained and arrested but has since been released. a petition calling for the senator to be removed from office following his comments has attracted nearly a quarter of a million signatures and

a fundraising page for legal fees for the teenagerfar a fundraising page for legal fees for the teenager far exceeded its goaljust hours after it started. that is all from me here in christchurch for now, back to you in london. thank you very much. and we'll find out how this story — and many others — are covered in tomorrow's front pages at 10:30 and 11:30pm this evening in the papers — our guests joining lukwesa burak tonight are the broadcaster john stapleton, and henry mance, political correspondent for the financial times. love island star, mike thalassitis, has been found dead near his hometown in essex. the 26—year—old rose to fame on love island in 2017, where he became a tv sensation after his stint on the show. the former league one footballer, who comes from a cypriot family, enjoyed a successful playing career before becoming a beloved reality tv star — after appearing on season three of love island — in the summer of 2017. his manager confirmed his death earlier this evening and the cause of his death is not yet known.
8:10 pm
with me now is our correspondent charlotte gallagher. charlotte, update us on what we know so charlotte, update us on what we know so far. we know so far that mike thalassitis was found dead in essex on friday and we believe in words close to his home. that is what his management have confirmed. we have not heard anything from his family oi’ not heard anything from his family or itv, that produce love island so far. as she said, he was a semiprofessional footballer before he had his reality tv stardom. he played for stevenage and lots of clu bs played for stevenage and lots of clubs that he played with have paid tribute along with lots of people that appeared on reality television alongside him. chris hughes who starred in love island with them said he was a great guy gone far too soon. jack finch who won the last series of love island pay tribute as well. we have also heard from
8:11 pm
caroline flack who is the presenter of love island talking about what a gentleman mike thalassitis was and this sadly is not the first tragedy to hit love island. just injune last year, another former contestant was found dead in her home, sophie gradin. a second death in less than 12 months associated with this programme. what is interesting is when you look at the flavour of reaction coming out now on social media and like you said, caroline flack saying that mike was a total gentleman, i will not forget that and you start to see this emphasis. there is an anger on social media about the reference to his nickname from his fans. this respect a lot of people are saying, tell us the background to that. when he was on love island, he was known as maggie mike, he threw the cat among the pigeons, all the women were trying to get him basically and he played
8:12 pm
them off against each other, and he got the nickname because of that, u nfortu nately we have got the nickname because of that, unfortunately we have seen a lot of journalists and newspapers that have tweeted about the story tonight and not included his full name, they just called him muggy mike and a lot of people who appeared with them on reality television, a lot of this and say that is disrespectful, he has more than a nickname from a television programme. how did he handle the fame? he seemed to do it really well, he went on to another reality show, celebs go dating. he did club promotions, things like that, posing with his fans, he seemed to really enjoy it and relish the spotlight. very quickly, any reaction from the production company behind love island? we have not heard anything so far and when sophie died they issued a statement very quickly and i expect we will hear something tonight from itv. thank you very much.

former minister, nick boles, has quit his local conservative association because of a rift over brexit. mr boles wants a closer relationship with europe and opposes a no—deal brexit. he'd been facing efforts by tory activists in his constituency in lincolnshire to oust him as the party's candidate at the next general election. he'll remain as an mp for grantham and stamford, and continue to be a conservative in parliament. our political correspondent ben wright gave us some background to latest developments. he was a remainer during the referendum, but he has consistently supported the prime minister's deal in the last few weeks, he has voted for it, but the difficulty, the tension between him and his party is that he has four months also said that there should be under no circumstances a no—deal brexit at the end of march. he was making that argument very forcefully, to the clear irritation of his local party members who thought that no—deal brexit should be contemplated and should be on the table. he has also been very prominent working with mps from other parties, trying to find agreement
8:14 pm
and consensus around a different sort of economic relationship with the european union after brexit, to the one that the prime minister envisages, sort of the norway option, and he has been working on that. clearly all this has put him out of kilter with his own party, who have locally, made it clear that they do not want him as their candidate at the next election and are on the brink of trying to deselect him. he has really jumped before he was pushed. he does continue to be a tory mp and will remain the mp for that seat until the next election. 0k, as far as the brexit schedule goes, where our way, just signpost it for us and what is coming up in the next week? well, i have not counted up the number of days, 12 or 13 days away from the 29th, which is the moment that we are set to leave the european union. that still is the day that we are set to leave the european union, whether there is a deal or not. now of course, earlier this week, parliament decided that it would not countenance a no—deal brexit and it has effectively organise
8:15 pm
the government to go away and ask for an extension. in response, the government said, 0k, we understand that there needs to be an extension now, brexit needs to be delayed, but there are two choices in front of you in parliament, either you back the deal and vote for it again and we expected to be back in front of mps on either tuesday or wednesday next week, just ahead of a european council meeting, which theresa may will be at. or, if there isn't a deal passed in parliament by the end of this month, the likelihood is that the government will ask the european union for a much longer extension and that is clearly something the eu are contemplating. that is how the next few days will play out. right now, there is huge work being done behind the scenes, between number 10, government whips and tory mps. the 75 who did not vote for this deal last time around, to pile pressure on them and convince them to get behind it or, and this will be number 10's argument, risk a very long extension and potentially losing control of brexit happening at all.
