there, his brother told the bbc he was a hero. i saw that video and the first thing i wanted to see was the look in his eyes. i did not see one iota of fear in those eyes. and that made me proud. what a brave man he was. as she met some of the families who have lost their loved ones, jacinda ardern pledged to tighten new zealand's gun laws, which unlike britain, don't include a ban on owning semiautomatic assault weapons. one of the issues we are facing is that the guns that were used in this case appear to have been modified. that is a challenge that police have been facing and that is a challenge that we will look to address in changing our laws. there is also a more immediate challenge — making this community feel safe and united.

caroline flack who is the presenter of love island talking about what a gentleman mike thalassitis was and this sadly is not the first tragedy to hit love island. just injune last year, another former contestant was found dead in her home, sophie gradin. a second death in less than 12 months associated with this programme. what is interesting is when you look at the flavour of reaction coming out now on social media and like you said, caroline flack saying that mike was a total gentleman, i will not forget that and you start to see this emphasis. there is an anger on social media about the reference to his nickname from his fans. this respect a lot of people are saying, tell us the background to that. when he was on love island, he was known as maggie mike, he threw the cat among the pigeons, all the women were trying to get him basically and he played

them off against each other, and he got the nickname because of that, u nfortu nately we have got the nickname because of that, unfortunately we have seen a lot of journalists and newspapers that have tweeted about the story tonight and not included his full name, they just called him muggy mike and a lot of people who appeared with them on reality television, a lot of this and say that is disrespectful, he has more than a nickname from a television programme. how did he handle the fame? he seemed to do it really well, he went on to another reality show, celebs go dating. he did club promotions, things like that, posing with his fans, he seemed to really enjoy it and relish the spotlight. very quickly, any reaction from the production company behind love island? we have not heard anything so far and when sophie died they issued a statement very quickly and i expect we will hear something tonight from itv. thank you very much.

former minister, nick boles, has quit his local conservative association because of a rift over brexit. mr boles wants a closer relationship with europe and opposes a no—deal brexit. he'd been facing efforts by tory activists in his constituency in lincolnshire to oust him as the party's candidate at the next general election. he'll remain as an mp for grantham and stamford, and continue to be a conservative in parliament. our political correspondent ben wright gave us some background to latest developments. he was a remainer during the referendum, but he has consistently supported the prime minister's deal in the last few weeks, he has voted for it, but the difficulty, the tension between him and his party is that he has four months also said that there should be under no circumstances a no—deal brexit at the end of march. he was making that argument very forcefully, to the clear irritation of his local party members who thought that no—deal brexit should be contemplated and should be on the table. he has also been very prominent working with mps from other parties, trying to find agreement

and consensus around a different sort of economic relationship with the european union after brexit, to the one that the prime minister envisages, sort of the norway option, and he has been working on that. clearly all this has put him out of kilter with his own party, who have locally, made it clear that they do not want him as their candidate at the next election and are on the brink of trying to deselect him. he has really jumped before he was pushed. he does continue to be a tory mp and will remain the mp for that seat until the next election. 0k, as far as the brexit schedule goes, where our way, just signpost it for us and what is coming up in the next week? well, i have not counted up the number of days, 12 or 13 days away from the 29th, which is the moment that we are set to leave the european union. that still is the day that we are set to leave the european union, whether there is a deal or not. now of course, earlier this week, parliament decided that it would not countenance a no—deal brexit and it has effectively organise

the government to go away and ask for an extension. in response, the government said, 0k, we understand that there needs to be an extension now, brexit needs to be delayed, but there are two choices in front of you in parliament, either you back the deal and vote for it again and we expected to be back in front of mps on either tuesday or wednesday next week, just ahead of a european council meeting, which theresa may will be at. or, if there isn't a deal passed in parliament by the end of this month, the likelihood is that the government will ask the european union for a much longer extension and that is clearly something the eu are contemplating. that is how the next few days will play out. right now, there is huge work being done behind the scenes, between number 10, government whips and tory mps. the 75 who did not vote for this deal last time around, to pile pressure on them and convince them to get behind it or, and this will be number 10's argument, risk a very long extension and potentially losing control of brexit happening at all.
