were called to reports of casualties outside the hotel. it was soon declared a major incident. one of the teenagers died at the scene, two died later in hospital. absolutely stunned and shocked. there we have people out enjoying themselves on st patrick's night and it ends up in tragedy. the hotel had been hosting a party to celebrate st patrick's day. police believe a crowd outside had been pushing to get in but are still trying to work out exactly what happened. preliminary investigations show that was a crush towards the front door of this hotel and in the crush people seem to have fallen. we are examining now to see if the people who have fallen are those who are deceased. there was a little struggling going on to get people up off the ground and that might explain also why there are reports of fighting. officers think there were a few hundred people waiting outside

they fear customs checks could become a target, needing police and then military protection, escalating to the dark days of the past. i cross the border, yeah, the company i work for, we would have a lot of staff cross the border as well. so there's that uncertainty, is brexit going to impact that as well? it will be very difficult, especially for younger people, for the last 30 years they've had the freedom of walking backwards and forwards. and we could start to have checkpoints on the border. i mean up there, a mile up the road, you had the army permanently there. to be stopped by men holding guns and opening a window and explaining what you're doing and them looking into your boot, and you trying to understand what's going on, it's not something that i want my daughter and son to be brought into. so people need to work together to make that not happen. if there's going to be customs, it could probably be back to the soldiers and that standing again, checking your cars, checking you every time you leave.

would be the right word. trying to avoid a hard border, the other way that europe can protect its single market is to put more checks between northern ireland and the rest of the uk — effectively across the irish sea. the complexities of avoiding all these choices is partly what has made brexit so difficult. the family of a man stabbed to death on a train in surrey, has told the bbc the recent rise in knife crime is a national crisis . lee pomeroy died injanuary, after being stabbed repeatedly, during a journey from guildford to london. his sisters are calling for much longer jail sentences for people caught carrying or using knives. they've been talking to our correspondent, nikki mitchell. lee pomeroy had got on a train at guildford's london road station. within minutes of boarding, he had been stabbed nine times by another passenger. he died on the train at horsley station. it was the day before his 52nd birthday.

we are absolutely heartbroken. our family has been destroyed by this. changed forever. loving father, loving husband, loving son and loving brother. really cared about people, and very generous. and speaking on behalf of lee's wife, lana, she is now traumatised because her husband went off on a train one day and didn't come back. if this can happen to a 51—year—old man just going about his business on a train in the middle of the day, this terrifies me. because if it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody. we don't want that for one more person. and it is a crisis, a national crisis at the moment. so enough is enough. in court last month, darren pencil pleaded not guilty to the murder of lee pomeroy, and not guilty of possessing an offensive weapon. he is due to stand trial injune

along with chelsea mitchell, who has denied a charge of assisting an offender. so how old was lee in that one? must have been about three. in memory of lee, the family is backing long prison sentences for people convicted of knife crime. so many people have signed it, it is due to be debated in parliament next monday. we will be back in the house of commons shortly to look at that statement, not sure what it is yet. now it's time for a look at the weather with nick miller. drier weather this week, not as stormy as it has been. there are some sunny spells to the east with a couple of showers, burst of sunshine for north—east scotland and into the northern isles. into tonight we keep a good deal of cloud around, still
