theresa may is continuing her attempts to persuade mps from the democratic unionist party, and dozens of her own colleagues, to support her brexit deal this week. but she has to overturn a huge majority opposed to her withdrawal agreement. borisjohnson, a leading leave campaigner, has said it would be "absurd" to hold a third vote on the deal before further talks with eu leaders. our political editor has been tweeting and she has been saying this: let's speak to our chief political correspondent vicki young. i cannot help you out because we do not know what he is going to say. under rules you cannot keep bringing out the same thing time after time. you have to make changes so it could bea you have to make changes so it could be a ruling about that, we do not know whether to may intends to bring back that meaningful vote this week over she will go to the eu summit asking for a lengthy extension delay to brexit and come back next week. i
2:44 pm
am going by the labour mp hilary benn who chairs the brexit select committee. do you think it is possible we do not get a meaningful vote this week and you will be asked to vote on it again a few days before the brexit‘s debate? to vote on it again a few days before the brexit's debate7m to vote on it again a few days before the brexit's debate? it is possible but the truth is nobody knows. i suppose the government are trying to work out if the numbers will be different if they brought it back this week, it does not feel like it. some people have shifted, the dup are playing their cards close to their chest but this seems to bea close to their chest but this seems to be a group of irreconcilable backbenchers who say they will not vote with the deal ever. we will just have to wait and see. that issue of no deal, there are some brexiteers who believe no deal is possible and it is still an option, tell me why they are wrong? they are wrong because the house of commons has voted clearly to take no deal on the 29th of march of the table
2:45 pm
because the prime minister has given a commitment from the dispatch box that once she has secured an extension which is now going to brussels to do, presumably having written a letter, following parliament pass decision last thursday, when the extension is agreed she will bring forward the legislation which will change exit day in our current law, which says 11 o'clock on the 29th of march she will change it to whatever date has been agreed with the european union at the european council at the end of this week. and you are confident that will go through parliament? yes, because parliament had voted clearly to reject leaving without a deal in any circumstances. that was the importance of the vote on wednesday last week. the government recognises there must be an extension and if there is an extension and if there is an extension you have got to change the exit date and you move into however long that extension is, which will be with the discussion of the

european council when the meat. we do not know what the house of commons is in favour of, if anything at all. your attempt to try and get that sorted was defeated last week, is that it for you? no, that isn't it. because although my experiment was defeated by two votes at the government did commit in the debate to bring a motion, which they have to bring a motion, which they have to do under the law, by monday the 27th of march which is a response to the prime minister's deal having been defeated a second time which we can amend. that is an opportunity to put proposals to the house about how we decide. i said this in my speech in thursday, what are we in favour of? let us give the house the opportunity to choose between a range of options, different with the european union, following a customs union or a deal like norway, or the option of a second referendum. union or a deal like norway, or the option of a second referendumm union or a deal like norway, or the option of a second referendum. if we get a lengthy extension, how do you think that will be used and what would you like to see happen in
2:47 pm
those months granted by the eu? either parliament finds another kind of deal it is prepared to back but for that to happen you do notjust need parliament to vote on a series of propositions, you need a government that is willing to say they will shift if there is a majority. in two and a half years the prime minister has showed an inability and unwillingness to move an inch from her deal, she keeps saying it is the best deal and she will not debate anything else, so thatis will not debate anything else, so that is not going to work. if parliament remains deadlocked the only other way i can see out of this is to go back to the british people and ask them to make the final decision and that is the attraction of the proposal that phil wilson and peter carroll had put forward. once the vote happens but is it, there is no further chance for parliament, thatis no further chance for parliament, that is what will be implemented. either the deal the prime minister has negotiated, but as a live option, or deciding to remain. thank
2:48 pm
you, so much uncertainty about what might happen this week in order for a meaningful vote to happen tomorrow, the government has to play a motion by ten o'clock tonight so we will at least know by ten o'clock there will be another vote tomorrow. we might have a clear idea at half past three but you are not quite sure, and you are not going to comment any further clearly cut. thank you very much. one of the most contentious issue in the brexit negotiations has been how to maintain an open border on the island of ireland. this month, geeta guru—murthy is on the road, finding out how brexit affects different parts of the uk. she's been to the irish border to understand the role it plays in people's lives. the st patrick's day parade in newry, a city in northern ireland on the border with the south, with people used to crossing it all the time. a hard border would disrupt the current ease of daily life and people's jobs. it wasn't always like this. the memory of the violent past is still fresh in the minds of many.
2:49 pm
they fear customs checks could become a target, needing police and then military protection, escalating to the dark days of the past. i cross the border, yeah, the company i work for, we would have a lot of staff cross the border as well. so there's that uncertainty, is brexit going to impact that as well? it will be very difficult, especially for younger people, for the last 30 years they've had the freedom of walking backwards and forwards. and we could start to have checkpoints on the border. i mean up there, a mile up the road, you had the army permanently there. to be stopped by men holding guns and opening a window and explaining what you're doing and them looking into your boot, and you trying to understand what's going on, it's not something that i want my daughter and son to be brought into. so people need to work together to make that not happen. if there's going to be customs, it could probably be back to the soldiers and that standing again, checking your cars, checking you every time you leave.
2:50 pm
so you're going to be constantly be worrying about soldiers all the time. so you're not really going to... people from england don't understand really what it's like to live here. you need to look at a map to even realise that this is an international border between northern ireland and the republic in the south. if brexit happens, it will be part of the only land border between the uk and the eu. at present, apart from a few signs about where to change your money, there's very little evidence of any border at all. it is completely open and free—flowing. across to the east coast fishing town of kilkeel, many fishermen voted for brexit but now there's frustration. the deal that theresa may is proposing at the present minute in time is that, like a half brexit, the way i understand it. so that the southern, the eu government can dictate the law and we will not have a say in it, as such, it will be proxy government, or a proxy state if that
2:51 pm
would be the right word. trying to avoid a hard border, the other way that europe can protect its single market is to put more checks between northern ireland and the rest of the uk — effectively across the irish sea. the complexities of avoiding all these choices is partly what has made brexit so difficult. the family of a man stabbed to death on a train in surrey, has told the bbc the recent rise in knife crime is a national crisis . lee pomeroy died injanuary, after being stabbed repeatedly, during a journey from guildford to london. his sisters are calling for much longer jail sentences for people caught carrying or using knives. they've been talking to our correspondent, nikki mitchell. lee pomeroy had got on a train at guildford's london road station. within minutes of boarding, he had been stabbed nine times by another passenger. he died on the train at horsley station. it was the day before his 52nd birthday.

we are absolutely heartbroken. our family has been destroyed by this. changed forever. loving father, loving husband, loving son and loving brother. really cared about people, and very generous. and speaking on behalf of lee's wife, lana, she is now traumatised because her husband went off on a train one day and didn't come back. if this can happen to a 51—year—old man just going about his business on a train in the middle of the day, this terrifies me. because if it can happen to him, it can happen to anybody. we don't want that for one more person. and it is a crisis, a national crisis at the moment. so enough is enough. in court last month, darren pencil pleaded not guilty to the murder of lee pomeroy, and not guilty of possessing an offensive weapon. he is due to stand trial injune

along with chelsea mitchell, who has denied a charge of assisting an offender. so how old was lee in that one? must have been about three. in memory of lee, the family is backing long prison sentences for people convicted of knife crime. so many people have signed it, it is due to be debated in parliament next monday. we will be back in the house of commons shortly to look at that statement, not sure what it is yet. now it's time for a look at the weather with nick miller. drier weather this week, not as stormy as it has been. there are some sunny spells to the east with a couple of showers, burst of sunshine for north—east scotland and into the northern isles. into tonight we keep a good deal of cloud around, still
