i will be back with more on those stories at 8pm, but now let's catch up stories at 8pm, but now let's catch up with the sport. hello and welcome to sportsday with me, james pearce, and lizzie greenwood—hughes. yes, hello, good evening. the headlines this evening: history is made at aintree as tiger roll wins the grand national for the second year running. another step closer to the quadruple. an early goal gives manchester city victory over brighton and a place in the fa cup final. hibs beat hearts in the edinburgh derby, but the match is marred by trouble from the fans. also coming up in the programme: more problems for leicester tigers — they're thrashed at home by premiership leaders exeter.
7:32 pm
hello, good evening as always on a saturday. it is a packed programme. we start at aintree. it's a grand national that will be talked about for years. all the chat before the race had been about last year's winner tiger roll, and he didn't disappoint. he's become the first horse since red rum 45 years ago to win the famous race two years running. it was such an impressive victory by the favourite. our correspondent andy swiss has spent the day at aintree. welcome to aintree come over the 70,000 fans know they have seen something very special indeed. not since red rum back in 1974 has a horse won back grand national. but in tiger roll, there was such expectation that feet could finally
7:33 pm
be repeated. he arrives in a red—hot favourites and he delivered in some style. aintree is the racecourse where they don't forget their heroes. 45 years ago, red rum won back to back grand nationals here. and since then, they have waited for a new icon to do the same. but in 2019, the path was laid for tiger roll. last year's winner the biggest favourite since red rum himself in the ‘70s. but this is the race with 39 other threats and 30 fences. just like a year ago, tiger roll was the smallest horse in the field. he's won the hearts of this sport with the size of his resolve. here comes tiger roll now... for number three in the room, a cluster race was opening up, the kind of gaps davey russell knows how to steer through. the jockey turns 40 injune. now, just like last
7:34 pm
year, he had a clear run to the line. by the home straight, it was becoming inevitable. in the end, this pint—size champion finished clear by nearly three legs. it may be, too, for the bookmakers. it's estimated this win could cost them £150 million. this was the back to back champion aintree waited half a century for comedy grand national that will be remembered for the roar of the tiger. joe lynskey, bbc news. what a win there from tiger roll, a spellbinding performance. a win for trainer gordon elliott and jockey david russell. what a moment for him, back to back grand nationals, and afterwards he told me what it meant. i training to get involved in it so much, but it's hard not to. it's such a nervous race. it'sjust
7:35 pm
brilliant. i never dreamt of winning... idreamt brilliant. i never dreamt of winning... i dreamt of winning a grand national, never mind two. it's so grand national, never mind two. it's so hard to explain to people what it does, - he's next so hard to explain to people what it does, - he's people talk - red and obviously, people talk about red rum to win... not as good yet, but very similar. they were trying to compare him before the race but now he's at least earned it at this stage. just a tremendous horse and he's got tremendous people around him, andi he's got tremendous people around him, and i think it all put together in one little ball. what a moment there for davey russell and what a day for tiger roll, the smallest horse in the field, but he has become a sporting giants. a historic win and a memorable day for the fence here at aintree. —— for the fence here at aintree. —— for the

fence here. andy swiss reporting from aintree. the sad news that i must add on is that the race had its first fatality for 7 years. the horse up for review was put down after falling at the first fence. moving onto football now. fa cup semifinal weekend — no surprise at wembley. manchester city beat brighton to reach next month's final. let's cross to lizzie at the big screen to get the news on this and the rest of the day's football. no surprise, as you say but i guess a surprise it was not a really good game. i think the fans watching, not just the brighton fence and the city fans, but all the fans watching would have liked to see a bit more goals for a start. city went on to win1—0. they are through to the fa cup final. brighton's plan was to contain city. it did not work. within four minutes, gabrieljesus put city one goal up. that was thanks to a cross from kevin de
7:37 pm
bruyne disappointing for the fence. city are still on for the quadruple. no one has done before. they are looking so formidable, and they are still on for the quadruple but they fed a lot of games to play over the rest of this season if they are going to get it. let's look at the bottom of the premier league table. that's where the focus was today. i think burnley are safe now. as you say come in today's premier league action was focused on the bottom of the table. we will have a look at the table in the moment but with fulham and huddersfield town committee race is on for the final spot. burnley will be relieved because they beat bournemouth 3—1 today. burnley have been on a terrible run of form and it looked like continuing when bournemouth took the lead — ashley barnes had headed—in an own goal.
7:38 pm
but as burnley dug in, bournemouth‘s defence really disappeared. ashley barnes made amends — scoring at the right end to seal the victory. a crucial win for burnley and their manager sean dyche. i thought so many parts of the performance was strong there. we know they're strong and it's not an easy place to come down to, and i thought we worked in all areas today, especially the mentality the mentality of going one down. there was no nervousness. we stayed clear minded. we came back quickly and affected the game from then on in. good shape, good energy and a good desire. and some real good moments of quality, actually. to other teams at the wrong end of the table playing at st. james park. newcastle encrusted palace. surely the winners safe. crystal palace have got the three points. they are safe. —— newcastle and crystal palace. this was a real six pointer at st. james park. it looked like it might bea james park. it looked like it might be a one pointer.
7:39 pm
it was nervy and goalless for most of the game. both sides had a goal disallowed. in the 81st minute, wilfried zaha did what he does best — win penalties and palace's skipper scored. 1—0 the result and palace almost certainly safe much to the relief of their manager. 40 points the big number to get. it's important to get beyond this. it's a lot of points to get with just... it is so nice to have those five games to play. no need to sit back on those laurels and let those chances pass us by. we are going to try and get those points, too. but it is certainly a very nice feeling when you have virtually got over the line — if not absolutely over the line. those nice feelings are not going to be shared by huddersfield town by the end of the season. they know they're going to be down four more goals shipped by leicester.
7:40 pm
leicester, we know they are safe after they were under brendan rodgers. it took a while for the game to get going, but when it did it was goal tastic. 4—1 it ended, jamie vardy scoring twice. how good has he been since rodgers took over? huddersfield put—up a fight, scored their first penalty this season. but for both sides, this is now all about next season. huddersfield in the championship, and leicester looking to build on their new found confidence. let's take a look at the bottom half of the table, newcastle now down to 15th, but still 7 points above cardiff. burnely not out of danger. most people assume they might be safe. palace pretty much guaranteed safety. southampton still in trouble after losing to liverpool last night. and that takes us to the top of the table. liverpool are back on top,
7:41 pm
a couple of points above manchester city, who have played one game less. city play tottenham in europe on tuesday. arsenal and chelsea play tomorrow and monday respectively. we know does smack of the teams going down. it looks like we know one of the teams going up stop it looks like it is going to be norwich. norwich fans would like to think so. they are another step closer to automatic permission after beating queens park rangers 4—0 today. norwich went 2 goals up within 12 minutes before top scorer teemu pukki added a third before half—time. then after the break, one of their scorers — emiliano buendia — was sent—off for a wreckless challenge. despite that, pukki scored again — his 26th league goal of the season and norwich‘s 8th straight win. they're now 7 points clear of sheffield united in second and qpr are hurtling towards the relegation places. let's have a look at the other

chamber chip mac matches. —— championship matches. elsewhere, i mentioned sheffield united who are second and keeping the pressure on norwich with an important win at preston. but leeds are third — beaten at birmingham — and west brom also lost to strugglers millwall. aston villa are still firmly in the play off places after a comfortable win at sheffield wednesday and 6th placed bristol city drew. at the bottom end, ipswich won their first game in a very long time against bolton, who are just above them and in the midst of a financial crisis. rotherham also won. iam i am looking forward to the last few weeks of the championship mac season. “— weeks of the championship mac season. —— chamber championship. pretty good day in scotland. celtic could have one delete tomorrow if rangers had lost. that did not happen. they were held to a goalless draw at home to livingston.
7:43 pm
meanwhile, there was a feisty edinburgh derby at tynecastle, where hibernian came from behind to beat hearts and move into fifth in the scottish premiership. the result, though, was overshadowed by some troubling behaviour from the fans, as patrick gearey reports. it is the issue that is clouding scottish football. for the second time in a week, a flare is thrown onto the pitch in a scottish premiership match, delaying kick—off in the edinburgh derby. the scottish police federation says supporter behaviour is driving the game to a crisis. and when peter haring headed hearts in front, the red mist descended once more. a similar incident happened after celtic scored against st mirren on wednesday. more followed three minutes later. hibernian equalised. during daryl horgan's celebrations, another aberration. this time, a coconut was thrown onto the pitch, accompanied by yet more smoke. in the second half, those problems were extinguished. the most notable flare came in the build—up to hibs' second, scored again by horgan. this match may yet decide which of these sides can qualify for european football next season, but despite some late scrambling, hearts could not regain a foothold. this game was memorable enough

for what happened on the pitch, but what landed on it may have further repercussions. patrick gearey, bbc news. in the battle at the bottom, dundee lost at home to aberdeen. hamilton v st mirren was a draw, and 3rd—placed kilmarnock closed in on rangers abover them with a win over stjohnstone. just before we go, got to show you something from last night's major league soccer in the usa. when you're up against la galaxy, you really need to be at the top of your game. i'll for vancouver whitecaps, thatis game. i'll for vancouver whitecaps, that is not how it went. let's have a look at this. in the opening minute of the game, vancouver were given a penalty and it's safe to say it didn't go exactly to plan. then, a failed attempt at a bicycle kick. and it didn't get much better after that — la galaxy won 2—0. it was none other than ibrahimovic who scored the second goal. he has still got it, and i think you would imagine he would probably

agree that he still has it, james can as well. absolutely, and you do too as well. let's go on and talk about the rugby union. for leicester tigers. things aren't getting any better for leicester tigers. still considered one of the giants of domestic and european rugby union, but before today a run of 8 defeats in 11 games had meant they'd dropped to tenth in the premiership, and in danger of relegation. today, they were thrashed 52—20 at home by league leaders exeter. james burford reports. the tigers flag is once synonymous with success. the premiership‘s most decorated team are trying to claw their way out of danger. the chiefs, top of the league, have drawn the gaze of many admirers, and this is why. this kind of speed would not be amiss at aintree. galloping with all the power of a resource, the early score. but determined to keep leicester firmly in the loop,
7:46 pm
johnny may did whatjohnny may does best — catch, shimmy, score. cue the tiger's roar. the chiefs are the leaders of the pack for a reason. theirs is a swashbuckling brand of rugby, near impossible to stop. they don't just find the line, they leap forward. such acrobatics forced mistakes. a red card for tom youngs, much of the fans' dismay, capping off a dismal day. and thereafter, the floodgates opened. a man down, they could not stop the england man, with the freedom of the pitch to score their seventh try. this, a victory as comprehensive as they come. james burford, bbc news. bath boosted their hopes of a spot in the permit ship play—offs with a dirty win against bristol. bristol aren't yet safe from the drop. this loose pass let rhys priestland in to score what proved to be the game's decisive try. bath are nowjust five points behind harlequins in fourth, the final play—off place. saracens kept up the pressure on leaders exeter with a bonus point comeback win against bottom side newcastle falcons.
