2:37 pm
was based. after that i went to the netherlands and i was following the path that some of his airmen who had been shot down, and it took me to arnhem, and when i was there, i learned about audrey hepburn thought it was very interesting. i look for information and i was surprised there is very little, even in her biography, and i thought if this isn‘t an idea for a book i don‘t know what is. how confident are you that she really was a figure in the dutch resistance? after all, though she grew up in part in the netherlands, she was only 16, i think, when the war ended. she was actually 14 and 15 when she helped the resistance, and i‘m very confident she did. i am covered while i was there in the village she lived in through most of the war that she worked as a volunteer for a doctor he was a resistance leader there. he was the missing piece. he told a lot of stories, about working
2:38 pm
for the resistance, raising money for the resistance, raising money for them, taking food to downed airmen, and herfamily even sheltered a member of the british airborne in their cellar after the battle of arnhem, after the british defeat. all of these things were because of the st doctor, who was a swashbuckling resistance leader that she worked for and he was a friend of family. why do you think she kept it so quiet, to the point where it came as a surprise to you when you learned there might be enough in it for a book? it's a devastating time in her life. luca dotti, herson, who worked with me on the book, told stories that she would —— had related to him about the work, but even to him she would not reveal the fa ct even to him she would not reveal the fact that she had to step over body parts in the street, the fact that she had to tend

the wounded and injured civilians after the battle of arnhem. her war was so devastating that she did not want to call attention to it. she did not wa nt to call attention to it. she did not want to relive it. and that is one reason she kept it quiet. the other was because her mother had been pro—nazi for the first part of the war, and! pro—nazi for the first part of the war, and i bothered audrey greatly and she worried for her mother‘s safety of that information came to light. but her mother changed her view? her mother did change her view, i have evidence of that, too. yet i was been a mysterious character and she has been seen... —— she had always been a mysterious character. but she did come around in 1942 character. but she did come around in1942 and character. but she did come around in 1942 and from then on she too participated in resistance activities. what more did you come across that surprised you about audrey hepburn? how close she was to the site. and after the battle of arnhem, she was very close to the

battle of arnhem, the bridge too far battle. and after that she was on the battle line, basically. her village was right there. it was sheued village was right there. it was shelled daily. it was strafed daily, it was bombed daily. and just the fa ct it was bombed daily. and just the fact that she was right there. nobody has really appreciated how close she was. i think it really informed the rest of her life. why was she so involved with unicef and particularly with children who were victims of war? because of what she went through. and because, of course, her later life which was so glamorous and she was internationally famous, was at such odds with her childhood. internationally famous, was at such odds with her childhoodm internationally famous, was at such odds with her childhood. it is. how can you really imagine, you know, princess and from roman holiday or holly golightly from breakfast at tiffany‘s, being this war victim? and seeing what she had seen. it‘s remarkable what she overcame and how she spun it to be positive for the

rest of her life. thank you so much for sharing it with us. thank you. did you know that when you talk to smart speaker devices, like alexa or siri, someone could be listening in to what you say? it‘s been revealed that amazon, google and apple all employ staff to listen to recordings of customer interactions with their smart speakers. news website bloomberg highlighted the issue after after speaking to amazon staff who listened to alexa recordings. the companies say voice recordings are occasionally reviewed to improve speech recognition. let‘s talk to our technology correspondent chris fox. this will have come as a bit of a surprise to people who have got these devices. yes, first of all, it‘s not a secret at all that all of these devices record the interactions you have with them. they are not recording all your conversations, they‘re not listening in all the time, but when you say the weight word, whether it‘s ok google or alexa, your interactions are recorded. if you have one of these devices, you can go back through the app and listen to what you have set it. that‘s not a secret
2:42 pm
but what is a surprise is that reviewers are sometimes listening to those recordings to make sure the voice algorithms have picked up what you set correctly and are interpreting it correctly. for example, if you say something like taylor swift, that needs to be tagged by the system so that they know that taylor swift is a music artist they‘re talking about. so for things like that they are listening into the recordings. but people are surprised because in the terms and conditions it does say, we use your voice data to improve our services, as you may have read. people are not... its not explicit that it is human moderators listening in. i think that has caught a few people unaware. yes in far too much, chris, i don‘t have one of these and now i‘m never likely to after this! how can you opt out? you can't really t can you opt out? you can't really opt out of the recordings, that is essential to how the devices work. what you can do is if you have an alexa device or a google home, you can go to their privacy website and delete previous recordings. you can also listen to them back, which is
2:43 pm
kind of cool. i‘ve been asking to my housemate asking for fahrenheit conversion so he can set the oven. he obviously does not know i have recording of it on my phone! but what is important to know is the company say no personally identifiable information is ever attached to the recordings. it‘s not like reviewers can pick out your personal recordings and listen to them. but what bloomberg did find when it‘s back to these amazon employees is that sometimes they found funny recordings that they would share in a group chat, sometimes they found recordings that we re sometimes they found recordings that were distressing, perhaps they had an assault going on in the background, and amazon told them at the time, it‘s not our place to intervene. in response to that, amazon has said there‘s no personal information attached to recordings and it takes any abuse of the system by staff very seriously. what impact it have on customers? and the uptake of devices like this? i think there‘s a trend, especially for tech reporters and companies, to assume that the public know exactly what they‘re getting themselves into. a
2:44 pm
lot of people have little sympathy, they say if you‘re going to buy an amazon microphone and put it in your home, you deserve what is going to the dude as a privacy breach. but just saying, we review this as part of our services, why do they? why not just say up front, we of our services, why do they? why notjust say up front, we use human reviewers to listen to anonymized clips? if you are upfront about things like this, it would not come out as a scandal months down the line and more people would trust your company. thank you very much. police have unveiled a new device which can detect when drivers might be using their mobile phones at the wheel. thames valley and hampshire forces are rolling out the technology, which can distinguish whether a phone is being used with a hands—free device or not. police also hope it will enable them to identify hotspots where motorists frequently use their mobile phones. peter cooke has more. he‘d just signed paperwork for his company. kate goldsmith knows more than mostly devastating consequences ——than most the devastating consequences

the police will then use that information to target particular hotspots. those behind the technology hope that in the future they will be able to record registration plates and issue people with fines. the system involves a sensor which detects vehicles where there are active 2g, 3g or 4g phone signals. it will also recognise if people are using a bluetooth hands—free device and the warning sign will not flash. but it cannot record or distinguish if a passenger or driver of a vehicle is using a phone. tougher penalties for using a phone illegally were introduced in 2017. drivers now face six penalty points and a £200 fine if caught. figures from the rac show 40% of drivers admit checking social media in traffic. statistics show that it‘s males aged between 26 and 45 are our targeted audience. this is a joint partnership working. i can‘t do it on my own. the mobile phone warning system

still quite blustery for northern ireland, the west coast of scotland, west wales and down towards the south—west of england. many places remaining dry. feeling quite pleasant in the sunshine, but still cool with some places only seeing mid single figure temperatures. for sunday, generally more cloud around, still quite blustery particularly for northern ireland, where we mayjust start to see this rain edge a little bit closer, so perhaps some showers for western areas. away from that, once again, a fine, dry day for many, but still feeling quite cool. warming up, though, perhaps, as we head through next week.
