hello there, welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. mark, what do we have this week? we have eighth grade, the debut feature from bo burnham. avengers: endgame, the saga comes to a conclusion. and bel canto, a troubled drama starring julianne moore. eighth grade, just to be clear, because there's a difference in system in the united states. this is 14—year—olds? system in the united states. this is 14-year-olds? exactly. the end of middle school, and it stars elsie fisher is kayla, a 13—year—old coming to the end of her eighth grade. and she is socially anxious in person. we see these shots of her

moving through the corridors of school. everybody else is moving this way, she is moving that way. she is crushingly voted most quiet in class at the and of the year, but she has a second life online. there isa she has a second life online. there is a version of herself that she put out online in which she posts cute, happy selfies. she has a video, blogs of self—help videos of how to put yourself out there and how to be more confident, how to be yourself. and the fact that no one appears to be watching these videos, we see a video count as one, two, five, zero, doesn't matter because in she's kind of using that to talk to herself. she also using her phone and her headphones to avoid conversation with her father, because headphones to avoid conversation with herfather, because he is intricately observed, slightly scrapie relation with herfather who she finds painfully embarrassing. here's a clip. can you not look like that, please? what? like what? just, like, the way you're looking. looking at the road?
5:47 pm
you can look at the road, dad! i obviously didn't mean that! just, like, don't be weird and quiet while you do it. sorry. hey, how was the...? no! you were being quiet, which is fine. just, like, don't be weird and quiet. cos, like, i look over at you and i think you're about to drive us into a tree or something. and then i get really freaked out and then i can't text my friends, sojust, like, be quiet and drive and don't look weird and sad. please. 0k. he sighs that's worse. don't be weird, mark! the trailer says you're going to fall in love with elsie fisher. do we follow up with elsie fisher. do we follow up with her? i fell in love with the whole for them. it's directed by bo burnham, who started his career as an internet comedian doing comedy sketches, and many are very brilliant. but this managed to show you the life of this 13—year—old who is painfully anxious, who was
5:48 pm
absolutely set by executive, about her. it depicts a life in a com pletely her. it depicts a life in a completely sympathetic which understands the specifics of her life. bo burnham said this is a film about a generation of growing up in about a generation of growing up in a culture they did not create, which demands that they put a version of themselves out there online, and he said very specifically when he was receiving the awards, it was a generation referred to as somehow self obsessed but in fact what they are it's self—conscious. and the printing about this film is it looks like he is listened to those people, it look like he's actually understood them. he gets the specifics of growing up in this generation z, but as with all great coming—of—age movies, if you get the specifics right, the universality will take care of itself also the real genius of its film is not only is it funny and dark and moving and heartbreaking and uplifting and there is kindness, and there is cruelty altogether, but no matter who you are, you can watch this film
5:49 pm
and see in that central character a version of yourself, someone you understand. i have nothing in common with that the character but the pain in the anguish that she goes through is really universal. i think this is one of the best films of the year. it came out in america last year. it was one of the films that barack obama listed as one of his aired films of 2018. it's 0bama listed as one of his aired films of 2018. it's really wonderful, and in the week in which you have bigger blockbusters coming out, for me this is the one to seek out. i think anyone with a beating heart will love this film. this is one of those films like mary poppins work if you don't love this, we don't have any thing for the disease to each other. speaking a blockbuster, we have a avengers: endgame, which is only three hours and one minute long. lot of that is the credit, but it is three hours long. this is the end pa rt three hours long. this is the end part of infinity war, and it is going to be the saga which is played out over a series of films. it picks up out over a series of films. it picks up at the and of infinity war, which
5:50 pm
has ended in disaster in the beginning of the film is sombre in tone. remind me of things like logan. film is pre—much three acts, each act with a very different flavour. i don't want to say anything at all about the pot, because people are going to see it at the weekend and i don't want to spoil anything. it is very impressive that in the film of this kind of sites, this kind of visual spectacle, with this number of characters that they have to deal with, actually what managed to do is it managed to make you care about the characters on the screen. i laughed more times than i have more times in alleged comedies. i am not that much emotionally vested in the story, but two moments and it worked which struck me as being universal. ido which struck me as being universal. i do think you do have to have seen the previous films. there's always a lot of discussion about can i see it, you can do, but the more of the other things you have seen, more invested you are, they're more you're going to get out of it. although there are moments because
5:51 pm
of the share limits it is dealing with feels perhaps slightly baggy or kind of, it is impressive that through all that come amidst all the visual spectral, it is the characters that are actually at the centre of it and it does have an emotional heart. it has an emotional core and i don't think any fans will feel let down. even i assume who is quite emotionally removed from this was touched by enough to be moved to tea rs was touched by enough to be moved to tears and places. bel canto, a hostage season south america based on the novel. a very popular novel which apparently is very good. julianne moore is an opera singer who agrees to give a private concert. ken wata nabe is ken watanabe is an industrialist who agrees to see julianne ken watanabe is an industrialist who agrees to seejulianne moore. gorillas realise the best as they haveis gorillas realise the best as they have is julianne moore. gorillas realise the best as they have isjulianne moore. they want julianne moore to sing for them. she

wa nts julianne moore to sing for them. she wants play ball. here's a clip. the government has turned off the water to this house to make things more uncomfortable for us. i gathered that. we need water. my comrade wants to shoot someone just to show the government who is in charge, but i have another thought. what's that? i want you to sing. i want you to sing loud enough that these animals outside can hear it. what good would that do? it might remind them what is at stake. 0h. no. i won't sing. not for you. he says to do what you're told. 0h. or what, you'll shoot me? you kept one woman, one american, una americana. if you shoot me, what do you think will happen to you and your people? i don't think i need

to do what you say. i have to say with such a huge amount of international talent on screen, and julian moore who i think is based on a well—respected book, it's a shame the film itself is so misjudge. 0n it's a shame the film itself is so misjudge. on one hand, serious trauma, on the other hand, under, there's a subplot about the president not being there because he is staying home watch this opera on television. i have to say on some points, you think that is what you're watching. i thought, good quality actors, good quality stuff and then sitting here thinking, at one point is this going to stop looking like a creaky television drama? the answer is, never. it's a real shame because as i said, i'm a big fan of any of the people involved that there is a real disappointment. 0h, involved that there is a real disappointment. oh, dear. all right. thank you. best out? a film called mid-90s. you'll struggle to find it in

theatres. jonah hill. it's currently different in the because it is made by some and who understands the kids for some you're a big fan also of... wild rose! it's a such a great story about summit using country music to speak those inner truths, those three chords and the truth which country music is meant to be. i think it gets right to the heart of that and it's uplifting. people really do end up punching the air, and a lovely cameo by bob harris! what are the very few people who has earned the right to play himself in utterly glowing terms, because he really is that nice. she is a great actress, and a belting voice. she is really terrific in that. and lastly, best dvd. being frank. the story, a brilliant

p°p5 being frank. the story, a brilliant pops song composer in a great pop and who never at the residence they deserve. he suddenly achieved fame asa deserve. he suddenly achieved fame as a character named frank, papier—mache had... it is a brilliant movie. it is made of of absolute love and affection and the way this alter ego sorta became summit he never expected to be. i thought it was really moving and really touching. love it when you talk through those, mark. thank you very much. that is it for this week. take some much for watching. from both of us, goodbye. good evening. what a difference a week makes. this time last week, i was standing here telling you about how glorious the easter weekend was going to be for most of us. u nfortu nately going to be for most of us. unfortunately come in this weekend, it's really a different story. quite a lot of cloud gathering as you can

see out in the west and the rain has started to fall. taking a look at the satellite picture, we've got this amazing curl of cloud in this area of low pressure starting to move in. this is storm hanna, and it will bring some heavy rain but the real worry of this form is the strong winds. we are likely to see the strongest winds arriving around 9pm this evening and then gusting thursday night saturday. that's strong enough to call because some travel disruption for vehicles in early hours and by to uproot some trees as well that are now starting... first thing in the morning, we'll see dust in the wind, 60, 70 morning, we'll see dust in the wind, 60,70 kph, morning, we'll see dust in the wind, 60, 70 kph, eastern areas, 50, 50 five kph as well. the wind is quite heavy through the midlands, and

police release new images of the man they believe killed the journalist lyra mckee in northern ireland last week. officers are asking the public to help identify this man who they believe fired indiscriminately into the crowd — hitting the journalist. the 29—year—old was observing riots in londonderry when she was hit. her death has prompted politicians to step up their efforts to restore powersharing in northern ireland. lyra symbolised the new northern ireland and her tragic death cannot be in vain. we'll be asking whether the new round of talks could finally break the political deadlock at stormont. also tonight: libya says the brother of the manchester bomber, salman abedi, was about to be extradited to britain — but that's been halted because of heavy fighting around the capital, tripoli.
