now — it's time for sportsday, with hugh ferris. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. the headlines this evening. alex hales is out of a home world cup. the batsman is removed from the england squad for the tournament after an off—field incident. mauricio pochettino‘s feeling the buzz ahead of spurs‘ big champions league night. you need to settle your dreams, to infinity and beyond. and a stunning comeback for kyren wilson — he's into the quarter—finals of the world snooker championship. also coming up in the programme: the tongan talisman who is going for his third olympics and a third defence spot. this.
6:32 pm
hello again. thanks forjoining us on sportsday. england will be without one of their most explosive players for the cricket world cup. alex hales typifies the style that has made them favourites for the competition that starts on home soil next month. but he won't play a part in it after being dropped from the provisional squad. in fact, he's been withdrawn from all international involvement after a recent off—field incident led to a suspension. the player's management company says it's hugely disappointed at how he's been treated. but just earlier this month he told the bbc‘s joe wilson how he was hoping to overcome past misdemeanours. in to overcome past misdemeanours. what do you thi significant in what do you think is the most significant lesson that your plant? just how much you are in the publics eye and to not put yourself in

situations, probably not the place you want to be as an international sportsman. i would say, being a bit more mature and sensible with decisions. let's get more on this with simon hughes. simon, first of all, for the ecb to make such a big decision on a big player in a big year, there must have been some serious consideration given to it? yes, it is a serious matter but i think in at the end, they had no option. partly because of his back story, which was the involvement in that incident in bristol with ben stokes. in the end, he was acquitted of any legal matter but he was fined and suspended by the board, by the english cricket board, so he was penalised in sense and he is still under eye suspending

sentence. he was already on borrowed time, if you like, it was his second offence. i don't think they really had much option. i suspect they may have wa nted had much option. i suspect they may have wanted to try and keep this issue out of the public domain but wa nt issue out of the public domain but want it in the public domain, everybody knows about it and i don't think they had any option. the ecb statement today is interesting, it talks about ensuring the england squad is free from any distractions leading up to the world cup. sometimes, bodies like this use euphemistic language to hide what they really think about is this genuinely at their concern? about it hanging over their preparations?m definitely is. i was talking to ben stokes about this only about three weeks ago. he accepted that he was at fault in bristol, the main fault was being out late. you know, obviously taking quite a lot of drink into them as well. he accepts that was a culture that has started to get a bit out of control and
6:35 pm
something needed to happen. in a way, he said, for him, the little thing with the best thing that could have happened because not only did it stop him from doing more things like that, it also sent a message out to the rest of the team that they can't carry on like this. obviously, alex hales didn't get the memo. simon hughes. as part of a statement in response to hales being dropped, his management company claim assurances they were given that any suspension for the off field incident could not affect his selection for the world cup have been rendered meaningless. well, hales has made six centuries in odi cricket as a powerhouse top order batsman. so will england miss him? i asked that question to former player and now cricket broadcaster isabelle westbury. who wasn't in the starting 11, but certainly, as a back—up batter, we have already had a few injuries with out have already had a few injuries with our batsmen. possibly not if everyone stays fit but equally, he
6:36 pm
has got some brilliant centuries in the past. a mark of england improvement is that they can think about doing without him, given how things changed after the last world cup and help of he was to that change. absolutely, to visit england, capitulating to bangladesh and other smaller nations. if you actually look the batter is looking out of the wings, james vince that we talked about, he scored a blistering 194 hampshire the other day. joe clarke, also players that are around. ben stokes has already been called up to the one—day squad but not yet have the world cup. there are a lot of players around and hopefully it means that strength and hopefully it means that strength and depth will help them through. well, it seems of those players is james vince, who is in pole position to be in england's world cup squad.
6:37 pm
the hampshire captain has been added to those taking on pakistan in a one day warm up series while ben duckett and dawid malan have been included in the squad to play ireland and also pakistan in a t20. there'll be a couple of familiar names coming back into the premier league next season. norwich and sheffield united have been promoted from the championship after the weekend's games. for norwich, it's three years away, but for sheffield united, 12 long years, during which they've suffered more than one relegation. and so for manager chris wilder, who's a former blades player too, it was special to be able to enjoy the moment with his team. we wa nted we wanted to be together when, or if, the results went our way. fortune before us, it did and the celebration is really started from there. winning the division, for us to go to the final game of the season, to go to the final game of the

season, an to go to the final game of the season, an incredible achievement, what a group of players. we will be back to work tomorrow, the players ought to go out in style, i certainly would. visiting stoke with a positive performance on sunday, we have managed to turn it around three yea rs have managed to turn it around three years ago and put it in the right direction. to get out if the division is an incredible achievement. i'm just delighted for everybody, such an unbelievable, brilliant. the best division in the world next yea r, brilliant. the best division in the world next year, and sheffield united will take part in it. another manager with a croa ky united will take part in it. another manager with a croaky voice but you can perhaps understand why after what happened on sunday night. spurs manager mauricio pochettino says he's living the dream and has even invoked buzz lightyear ahead of their champions league semi final first leg against ajax. it's the club's biggest european night for more than half a century and will take place in their new stadium. but they'll be without both

harry kane, who's still injured, and son heung—min, whose goals against manchester city helped get them this far. but pochettino is still thinking big. you need to centre your dreams... infinity and beyond. because if you put your dream here, and in a moment, you don't get this dream, you get this and maybe it's a bottle without water, so it's difficult to accept. i think when you are ambitious and do want to achieve big things, you need to set your dream. i always was oedema. —— a dreamer. let's bring you up to date with some of the other sports stories today. kevin friend has been announced as the referee that will take charge of the fa cup final

hawkins defeat from 6—1 up from an absolutely rampant kyren wilson this afternoon. it was important for him to get near to the winning post and thatis to get near to the winning post and that is what he did. to finish the way he did, with two centuries from 11- 0213-11 was way he did, with two centuries from 11— 0213—11 was absolutely wonderful. showed great character, not really involved in his match, just waiting for his charges and came roaring back. he is only 27 and is establishing a real force in this championship, his fourth quarterfinal. he is one of the favourites every week. when he comes to this event with the long format over a long period of time, he has the technique, the character, the heart. he is good for success here. there is also another man who shares those qualities, but of course is ali carter. having also been down against zhou yuelong, what a comeback from him to win six on the

spin this afternoon. what can you say about him? he is one of the players to have played during the o'sullivan area, as you say, a two—time finalist here. we could be talking a two—time winner of this championship. hot is on file every time, gives it everything every time he goes out there. deserves everything he gets. we must also tip our hats to zhou yuelong, 28 years old. we have been impressed by his composure. perhaps, when setting too far. his match play was fantastic. he lost two friends last night against today, he can carry it through but he is a player for the future. i don't think it be too long before he is qualified for this, i think he is a top 16 player over the next few years. two more quarterfinal berths to be climbed this evening. you can see that on

bbc seven o'clock. liverpool's virgil van dijk has won this season's professional footballers‘ association player of the year award raheem sterling was the young player of the year at the pfa awards. both we re of the year at the pfa awards. both were sickening your vote, generally, while the difference? there is a big difference because there are two different criteria is. the pfa award is players up against one another, rating themselves. the footballers writer association awards, the

put it a little later so we can wait for the outcome of the season? we do try and leave it as late as possible, we do discuss this and try and push it as light as possible. we have got to look at this season, it's particularly tough because we have the premier league and then the champions league final on the 1st of june. then there is the nation's lee, of course, england and the netherlands featuring on the 6th of june. you must understand where clu bs june. you must understand where clubs need to pledge to be committed but raheem sterling coming into an fa cup final, right at the end of the season when we typically have it. it's all about finding the time when the players will still be with their clubs, but on international duty, not being told to get away and get recuperation in the small window that they have. we will look at
