news was delivered in person by prince harry. we have been told that the couple, once the baby was born will celebrate privately as a family for a few days. it was something of a surprise that prince harry made an announcement. you can see that he wa nted announcement. you can see that he wanted to deliver that news personally in front of the cameras, paying tribute to his wife, saying he was absolutely in awe of her own, and what women go through in giving birth. let's head through to central london, to buckingham palace where the official announcement was placed and that is easily few minutes ago. lucy, for anyone visiting london today, to go along and do some sightseeing, this will have been quite the bonus, won't it. absolutely. i have spoken to some tours to are pretty amused. they

just came to take some photos of buckingham palace, and then this new started ripping through the cloud, but the birth of this little baby boy. everyone seems pretty excited. some people saying they were hoping to be in the uk, when it happened, and a lot of talk about what disney would be. of course the bookies were predicting that it could be a baby girl, that was also interesting, just to get people's response to find out that george, charlotte and louis have a cousin who is a baby boy. the cambridges are being talked about here, as well. genuine sense of, i think, about here, as well. genuine sense of, ithink, and relief. delighted that everything appears to be well, and we have of course had that moment, where we saw lots of people gathering by the gates, just to see

the ceremonial easel that was placed on the forecourt, and it said, the queen and the royal family are delighted at the news that her royal highness, the duchess of sussex were safely delivered of a son. the royal highness and her child are doing well. everybody has got the camera is just trying to desperately take a photo, to beam around the world, social media already alight. i was just looking at twitter and the thousands of tweets being sent at this baby boy. we have also had some reaction from public figures. here, we can take you through some of those, pityingly from the prime minister, theresa may, who has treated static, on arrival at a baby boy, and went and looked at this

response as well from scottish first minister, nicola sturgeon, adding that the birth of a baby is a joyful occasion. it's at, commonwealth, meghan and harry have a very special place at the people in the commonwealth, and in new zealand and australia, remember they went in a world tour there. really captured the hearts of many in that

think so, yes. and you don't see an end to how australia dulled to make there is a republican element in australia, is it going away? are some people...? i think some people hold it but that already helps that situation. i think the commonwealth could be so for a little while. lovely to have your thoughts, i'll let you go and enjoy the atmosphere. how does it feel? cool, exciting, eve ryo ne how does it feel? cool, exciting, everyone is happy and having a great time. did you get a photo of the easel? i did. are you sending it home? straightaway is. everyone is waking up to the news, this news being beamed right around the world right now. thank you. massive interest globally in this new arrival but let's just tell you what we do know is there is lots of speculation about what this baby will be called. let's tell you what we know about the birth so far. still this little boy was born at

continues. here they were less than a year ago in one of the most watched events of 2018. their fans around the world are now awaiting the first glimpse of their child, the first glimpse of their child, the latest addition to the royal family. the couple announced their engagement in november 2017. and in the bbc interview which followed prince harry made clear his desire to start a family. children? not currently no. of course, you know, one step at a time and hopefully we will start a family in the near future. five months after their wedding, on the day their first royal tour began, the announcement came from kensington palace that the couple were expecting. it added an extra level of excitement to an already much anticipated tour of australia and the pacific region. what followed was months of the media obsessing about meghan and her burgeoning bump, and that obsession was catching. we wish all the best

for your baby. throughout her pregnancy, meghan kept a full diary of engagements, usually carried out in sky—high stilettos. in february, she faced criticism in the british press for jetting she faced criticism in the british press forjetting off she faced criticism in the british press for jetting off to she faced criticism in the british press forjetting off to new she faced criticism in the british press for jetting off to new york for a costly baby shower organised by celebrity friends. one month later and shortly after this engagement her maternity leave began although palisades stressed the duchess would still be holding work—related meetings in private. this was how harry was introduced to the world 35 years ago, on the steps ofa the world 35 years ago, on the steps of a private wing of st mary's hospital. just as prince william had been and then william's children. as well as avoiding the london hospital photocall, harry and meghan have said they want time to celebrate privately as a new family so the public will have to wait for the first pictures of the child who is seventh in line to the throne.
5:16 pm
meghan's birth in los angeles didn't make global headlines but her baby's grill and no doubt a difficult relationship with her father thomas will again be subject to public scrutiny. meghan's mother, who remains close to a daughter despite living in california, is also expected to spend more of her time in the uk. this is where baby sussex will call home, frogmore cottage has undergone a multi—million pound refit and, tucked away deep in the heart of windsor castle's private estate, it'll allow meghan and harry to get used to parenthood well away from public view. sarah campbell, bbc news. it is rather a calm is seen here behind me at the moment but on the other side of the castle, on the high street in windsor, it is rather busy. ben and i was there, hello, ben! good afternoon. as bank holiday, the

5:19 pm
have any suggestions? henry james philip? ithink henry. i like have any suggestions? henry james philip? i think henry. i like the name jonathan. ido like i do like the namejonathan. why are the james philip? well, after harry and philip, the duke of philip. laughter the group of —— duke of edinburgh. set well, that's it for the high street here in windsor. then, thank you very much, well, of course, the world, needless to say, huge news for all of those royal watchers who pore over every detail of royal life, and the relationship of harry and meghan, their wedding, life, and the relationship of harry and meghan, theirwedding, and now the birth of their baby is a rich source of material for them. it has been interesting chatting to various
5:20 pm
royal correspondence a day and royal watchers about this bath, and how they think the couple will bring up this baby. earlier, vanity fair's respondent spoke to my colleague, carrie gracie. it seems that everything happened very quickly, and i'm not sure they were even aware that the baby was going to be born. it gives you some indication of how privately this that's been kept. interesting thinking about harry and william, so conscious of course of press interest, press intrusion, the paparazzi, and that interest in deciding their own publicity. yes, i think, interest in deciding their own publicity. yes, ithink, in terms interest in deciding their own publicity. yes, i think, in terms of how they have raised this baby, you have got to understand that prince harry grew up, rarely out of the spotlight. i was quite surprised they came out and spoke to the cameras today. came out and spoke to the bbc, which was brilliant and unexpected, because they made it
5:21 pm
very clear from the outset, they didn't want huge attention on this bath. they want the details to remain private. —— on this bath. probably the way is is out —— probably the way they want. probably the way is is out —— probably the way they wantm signals to me that they want to be able to give this child a normal childhood as possible. and katie, you will have watched the prince come out and announce the birth of his baby's son, and more delighted to imagine. looks, he was absolutely beaming, thrilled, delighted, had that look of absolute amazement on his face. and said how any woman gives birth is beyond his comprehension. they are very much in those first flushes of almost disbelief. you know when you just
5:22 pm
can't believe you've become a parent. lets get the reaction from the usa now. her american mother doria ragland is in windsor at the moment, at frogmore cottage, helping them get used to life as new parents in the coming days and weeks ahead. we can call us now to danjohnson, who is in washington. we saw a few minutes ago a tweet from michelle obama, welcoming the new baby, congratulating the royal couple, a sign of the fascination there is in the united states with this family. there is a fascination. i think it's an intense two beach parties, fireworks and ticker tape parade is right to do the country, but sadly there are people who have taken a fascination with the entire back
5:23 pm
graph, whether this baby will be a us citizen or not. that means hassan would perhaps be entitled to us citizenship, but that is something she would have to pursue. —— that means hassan would perhaps be entitled. when will he make his first trip to america. there has been quite... it is possible that quite a lot of people here have not picked up the needs they might come home from work and perceive it later on in the day, and we have had to fit any line of succession to his family history, as well. we have been going right back through the royal family tree, even
5:24 pm
been going right back through the royalfamily tree, even back been going right back through the royal family tree, even back to mentions of wallis simpson, that other american divorcee who played a role the royal family way back when. a lot of interest here, that the interest in the royal family, but predict the meghan and harry and the new baby. and you mention, dan, all the speculation surrounding a name, and whether, in some way, whether it's via the naming of this baby, or in some other way, the couple will reflect the meghan's us heritage. we saw the most reverend michael curry participating in the ceremony, so one would imagine that they will wa nt to so one would imagine that they will want to reflect that in some way with this baby. yes, it will be interesting to see exactly what happens on that front, whether we do see a reflection in the name, that is chosen, and in how this boy is
5:25 pm
brought up, how much time he spends in the united states, given that this is where his maternal grandparents are, although of course we know that there is a difficult relationship between meghan and her father. how will that play out? how much of a role will meghan's mother play and mac! but we haven't had a word for it yet. but i quite
5:26 pm
cup washington at what sort of a role we it is her home. so i am sure we will see him taking a trip probably privately in the next few months to america. what role the usa will play? it already has a role. this is the first anglo—american baby born into the royal family, which is quite a landmark. name wise, let's wait and see. harry was saying early on in that lovely interview they've had some time to think of names. i suspect, you know, knowing a little bit about the couple, we'll probably get something a little bit modern with a twist that reflects the heritage on both sides. and how do you think america do to make
5:27 pm
american heritage will influence the upbringing of this baby? somebody describe meghan to be a quintessential californian girl in her attitude. that is undoubtedly going to influence how she brings up this baby. absolutely and i've written about that in the sunday times. they have been eyeing up an american school in windsor, possibly, as a base for their child. i'm sure things like we know meghan is keen for the baby to have the american heritage marked and celebrated so july the lith american heritage marked and celebrated sojuly the lith and thanksgiving might be as important as christmas at sandringham. no doubt this is a big thing. it is a british prince born into the british royal family that'll be spending most of its time in england but that'll be a global child, an international child born to a globally famous couple, and i'm sure it's upbringing will reflect that. beyond her fans, who it's upbringing will reflect that.
5:28 pm
beyond herfans, who followed her, especially in her role in suits,, the public he has had a much longer relationship with prince harry, they've seen him go through incredibly difficult times as a young boy, they've seen him as a man speak about those difficult times and how he has come through them, and how he has come through them, and about his clear desire for a family. so there is a lot of emotion attached to the birth of this baby. you're right. everyone has felt for harry. and wanted him to have a successful and happy personal life ever since watching him follow his mother's off and when he was 12 yea rs mother's off and when he was 12 years old, people have willed him to be happy in his life. every time i've spoken him, whenever i've interviewed him, he's talked about how important a family life would be for him at the right time. when i last interviewed him in 2016, he was single and hoping for someone to slip into his life, a phrase he used, and a few weeks later meghan did. it is a happy day, and to see that interview he gave in the royal
5:29 pm
mews with the horses, the queens horses watching, which i loved, he was bursting with happiness and that was bursting with happiness and that was a lovely thing to see and i'm thrilled for him. so much has happened. you said you interviewed him last before he had met meghan a couple of years ago, and so much has happened in such a short space of time, theirfirst wedding anniversary is a few days away. how lovely is that?! almost a year ago we we re lovely is that?! almost a year ago we were here for that glorious day, with the horses processing up, incredible! they only met a few yea rs incredible! they only met a few years ago, they got engaged pretty quickly. they both seem really happy andi quickly. they both seem really happy and i think for harry who has been through ups and downs in his personal and family life, when he knew, he knew and it is wonderful to see him become a father, something he's always wanted. they know the massive interest is in them as a couple, that there is going to be in this baby. here is the evidence around us as the world's media gathered to report on this news. how will they balance what they know is
5:30 pm
that huge interest in that baby with a private family life, and bringing that baby up with a good degree of privacy? well, i think if you look at the cambridges, they've managed it successfully, those photos we saw of prince louis for its first birthday, we've barely seen him for a year but we've had very carefully staged and manage photos released, taken by the cambridges themselves and all those children have had a pretty private life the last few yea rs. pretty private life the last few years. prince george has been at school, the media have been respectful of that and of their privacy. yes, of course, there will be enormous interest in this baby and in the couple for years to come but the public are fully aware that harry and meghan have an entitlement toa harry and meghan have an entitlement to a private life and so does their new baby son and i'm sure they'll be given that. the baby, baby sussex, whatever he will be called, we might find out in a couple of days, is seventh in line to the throne but prince harry is a very prominent role so can we expect eventually that little boy to grow up to have a more prominent role or not? we don't
5:31 pm
know. it's very early days, the speculation but baby sussex possibly has more freedom and in a unique position in the royal family than any other royal child, seven to nine to the throne, not on hrh at birth, the queen hasn't given him a title, he won't become an hrh until the prince of wales becomes king, who knows how long that'll be? who knows if you will take on royal duties. the prince of wales has a streamlined vision for the future of the monarchy. harry and meghan are a big part of that, so will their children be but whether or not that baby children be but whether or not that ba by ta kes children be but whether or not that baby takes on official duties down the line, let's see. great to talk to you and thank you for your insight and thoughts. royal correspondent for the sunday times. prince harry, when he made that surprise announcement in front of the cameras earlier today revealing hisjoy and in how the cameras earlier today revealing his joy and in how over the the cameras earlier today revealing hisjoy and in how over the moon the cameras earlier today revealing his joy and in how over the moon who was that his baby son had arrived
5:32 pm
safely and both baby and mother were doing incredibly well in his words, he said they'd had lots of time to think about a possible name. no doubt there will be a shortlist, perhaps the name has been chosen, we don't know that yet. what prince harry did say was that in a couple of days we could expect to see the first images of them as a family. we understand there may be one photographer in the grounds of windsor castle. undoubtedly, so many people right around the world eager to see those images. here in windsor on the long walk, lots of interest today, lots of people both locals and visitors on this bank holiday out to enjoy the surroundings with the added bonus of being around in this royal town when the news emerged of the birth. it came pretty quickly via twitter. the announcement first of all that the
5:33 pm
duchess of sussex was in labour, then very quickly following on the news that she had in fact given birth to a baby boy. we have seen in the last shot while the more traditional way of announcing royal births, which was the placing of the announcement on an easel on the forecourt of buckingham palace to the thrill of the tourists gathered there as well. well, lets you know a little bit more of my interview earlier today with the former diary editor at tatler magazine. iam editor at tatler magazine. i am wondering whether it is possible that diana's father, al spencer, his name wasjohn. and john is one name nobody seems to have mentioned so far but it is possible that it could bejohn. it would be a lovely thought to name the earl of
5:34 pm
dumbarton john. and something lovely thought to name the earl of dumbartonjohn. and something else which came up, listening to some of the interviews, he is not an hrh at the interviews, he is not an hrh at the moment and it is unlikely the queen will do anything at this stage. if and when charles becomes king, he will then be a prince. that'll happen automatically. but, at the moment, he isjust the earl of dumbarton. the other thing which i think is very interesting as it is wonderful her mother is there. i remember when i had my baby it was fantastic to have a nanny but they boss you around a bit. having your mother who has had a baby and still remembers what you have to go through, it really is more helpful than having a nanny because a lot of nannies have never had babies. so, those initial first weeks, nannies have never had babies. so, those initialfirst weeks, it nannies have never had babies. so, those initial first weeks, it is very helpful to have your mother around. ithink very helpful to have your mother around. i think that was incredibly helpful and very sensible.
5:35 pm
how much do you think their newly renovated home will give them that sense of privacy in a relatively normal life, so far you can have a normal life, so far you can have a normal life, so far you can have a normal life when you are a power couple, as they are, how much will this location give to them in the coming weeks and months? that is what they chose and it was a sensible choice. otherwise you are ina sensible choice. otherwise you are in a goldfish bowl and your every move is being monitored. to have the privacy and peace of being in the cottage and limiting the people around you at this particular time. this is the time when you want to be with your baby and prince harry, of course is over the moon. it is rather lovely to be in a cottage in the country and have peace around
5:36 pm
you and just concentrate for as long as you possibly can on that little baby. that was the former diary editor of tatler magazine talking earlier. let me tell you about some reaction coming in, as you can imagine. an outpouring of reaction on social media. we have heard from the un's children's fund unicef, congratulating the duke and duchess of sussex. we don't know if it was a home birth, but the indications are it would have been a home birth at the couple's newly renovated home on the couple's newly renovated home on the windsor estate. we have heard from the zoological estate in london. they also had a birth to tell today. they said having just
5:37 pm
welcomed a new arrival of our own, welcomed a new arrival of our own, we would like to offer congratulations to the duke and duchess of sussex on their new arrival. you heard me talking earlier, the congratulations from michelle obama saying on twitter... of course that there is a hashtag trending on twitter, as you can no doubt imagine. this is the instagram account of the duke and duchess which has said in their last short while...
5:38 pm
earlier i spoke to victoria howard. i think we will see this baby, this boy, the earl of dumbarton, he will ta ke boy, the earl of dumbarton, he will take a role of princess eugenie and princess beatrice, they work but they do have titles. we can expect quite a normal life for this young royal. he won't be a prince of course, unless the queen intervenes on that matter, but what title would he have? it would be prince harry's secondary title. he is the duke of sussex and his secondary title is the earl of dumbarton, which is scottish and that is the one his son will carry. perhaps there will be a nod with a visit to scotland at some point for this new baby. the focus
5:39 pm
now is on seeing those first images of the three of them as a family. how do you think they are going to manage the huge desire for images of the baby, with their desire also to give this child and themselves, as new parents, a private family life? there are a couple of things, the official photos will be taken in the grounds of windsor castle. it will be harry, meghan, baby, cameraman and a photographer. that puts them at ease, there is less press than what william and kate are faced when they came out of hospital. they are managing that with their instagram account. they are living at the cottage within the grounds of windsor castle which gives them enormous privity. they are aware people are interested in seeing and learning about their baby so i think
5:40 pm
they will use their instagram page for some more personal snaps. meghan appears to have posted, using the american word diapers instead of nappies. i think they will use that channel really quite productively and help the people see into their newborn's life, but in a way that they control. i have been talking to not only royal commentators on this side of the pond, but in the us as well. i spoke to lisa ryan from new york and she is most relevantly, in this instance, co—host of the podcast, royal baby. we are beyond thrilled about the baby and we have been patiently and some others not so patiently waiting for the birth.
5:41 pm
this is a couple as i was mentioning, with a huge star power on both sides of the atlantic and right around the world. how do you think americans will greet this news? i think americans are so excited. they have taken to meghan and harry so warmly. there was a huge interest with william and kate, but this is different. harry was a lwa ys but this is different. harry was always loved, but to be married to an american woman, that is so exciting to people here on this side of the pond. of course, there will be massive interest now in seeing the first images of the three of them as a family and see what the ba by‘s name will them as a family and see what the baby's name will be. perhaps some reflection in the names, traditionally royal babies have several names and whether there will be anything that reflects meghan's american heritage? who knows at this
5:42 pm
point. i was seeing reports that the bookies were certain it was going to be ivy and it was going to be a girl. which is ridiculous because ivy is the name of her best friend's daughter. no one seems to know what is going on except for the royal couple. it would be massively popular of course if the couple were to bring their new baby on tour at some point in the coming months. some suggestions they might even go and live abroad at some point, whether that would be in the states or not? but there would be huge interest if there was a royal tour to the state with their new baby? people are really excited when will and kate came to town, in general people get thrilled. but will meghan have a homecoming tour? that would bea
5:43 pm
have a homecoming tour? that would be a great thing. when she was in new york with her girlfriends for her unofficial baby shower, everyone was so excited and everywhere she went everywhere was packed with fans. there would be a huge turnout everywhere they went but also be very nice for her to pay homage to the places that are really important to her. like california, that would be lovely. although i would personally like a new york visit with the baby. that was lisa ryan joining me earlier. an here in windsor, we have people visiting from estonia. and margot‘s got child. look at that cute smile. performing for the camera. fascinated by the microphone, so i will have to hold on tight. you live here, what do you make of this news? it is great news, everyone is
5:44 pm

windsor. that is interesting, saying she feels there is a huge amount of interest in estonia in the royal family and especially in harry and meghan and no doubt that will extend to their new baby boy, the as yet unnamed baby sussex. maybe they have decided on the name, but we don't know yet, lucy? lucy is at buckingham palace where the official announcement of the birth was made a short while ago. there was a ripple of excitement through the crowd. there was a ceremonial easel in the forecourt of buckingham palace displayed which makes it official. let me tell you what it said. "the queen and the royal family are delighted and then use her royal highness the duchess of sussex was safely delivered of a son." at 5:26am, her royal highness and her child are both doing well.
5:47 pm
so, tourists, londoners, people from all over the world have come here with their cameras up against the gates of buckingham palace to take a photo, feeling like they are sharing ina photo, feeling like they are sharing in a piece of history, really, and i think as well as people being incredibly happy for the couple, i'm also sensing a bit of relief. if you people saying they were worried that baby was laid, maybe there were complications so there is relief that meghan and the baby are doing well. you've been talking to people from around the world. here at buckingham palace i've been speaking to americans and germans and of course members of the commonwealth, people from the commonwealth very excited, they very much feel they share in the early history of meghan and harry because the royal couple had theirfirst and harry because the royal couple had their first royal trip down under to new zealand and australia. people in that part of the world stood asleep and —— still asleep there. i have two australians with
5:48 pm
me now who are going to represent their country and views. good to see you, tell me how you heard the news of the royal baby. we saw the post on instagram. what did you do? we are at camden market, we are excited, and we came straight down here hoping we didn't miss the display of the easel. that you feel like you are taking part in a little bit of history? of course we did because it's not everyday you come to london and a baby is born, the announcement comes out, it was pretty cool. what was the feeling in the crowd when it came out? excitement, it was contagious. one person would smile, everyone would smile, everyone was waiting for something to happen. we would clap at every noise and we've made so many friends from all over the world here today. people are telling me it is lovely to celebrate some good news. of course it is. it is such good news, they've had theirfirst baby, so exciting! what do australians think of harry and meghan after their particular
5:49 pm
successful trip? we adore them even before they came down, we all followed the wedding, we are excited when we found out they were a couple. after they came, we love them even more. what do you love about them ? them even more. what do you love about them? theyjust suit, they look happy, and just seeing them together, it is cute and lovely. and this baby boy, were you expecting a boy or where you're like the bookies thinking it would be a girl?” thought it would be a girl because everyone social media saying if it was a everyone social media saying if it wasa girl everyone social media saying if it was a girl with —— mag they'd have to call it diana. and do you have a name that you are picking or you'd like? we were thinking it has to be something traditional, english name, something traditional, english name, something like albert. that is cute. what about a more american name? something like albert. that is cute. what about a more american name7m they want it modern, may be mix it up, may be sussex because baby sussex. just keep it, go with it.l little bit of bling to go with him? yes, a little bit of bling. how closely will you follow his life?
5:50 pm
you probably feel like you had a small part of it being here today. will you keep a close eye on him? of course we will, we will see him grow up course we will, we will see him grow up and stuff. and a message for harry and meghan? they probably will not be watching but let's just say that ev is on. i'd say don't let the pressures of royalty distract you. enjoy parenthood, i'm sure you'll make amazing parents and upload a lot of photos so i can see a baby boy. they have the instagram page so they definitely well. that is something we are looking forward to. that is the speculation that we might see the first photo of baby sussex on the royal couple's instagram account. we are keeping a close eye. we are. thank you very much. let me bring you a little bit more reaction, congratulations from bishop michael curry, who you might remember gave that rousing sermon about love at the duke and duchess's wedding. he is the presiding bishop of the us episcopal church and he
5:51 pm
has tweeted, "the jewish of the us episcopal church and he has tweeted, "thejewish tradition reminds us the birth of every child isa reminds us the birth of every child is a reminder that god is not finished with us yet. there is hope. congratulations to the duke and duchess of sussex and prayers of blessings to them and their baby". we've also heard on twitter from the invictus games, you may well know that the duke of sussex was due to travel to the netherlands on wednesday for a two—day visit to the country for the launch of the invictus games 2020. he cancelled the wednesday part of that visit, the wednesday part of that visit, the thursday party is still going ahead but the invictus game saying "congratulations to the duke of sussex and to her royal highness the duchess of sussex on the arrival of their royal baby. " duchess of sussex on the arrival of their royal baby." let's hear now from our royal editor, nicholas witchell. the sequence of events today has been rather curious. it was at 2pm this afternoon
5:52 pm
the palace announced that she had gone into labour. but, of course, actually, the baby had been born eight hours previously. the baby was born at 5:25am this morning, and at 2pm this afternoon, the palace says she's gone into labour in the early hours. so, yeah, that is another measure of how determined they are to just keep everybody at bay, to keep everybody, sort of, pushed away. and that is a reflection of harry's. .. just his suspicion, verrging at times on still slightly hostile attitude to elements of the traditional media. he has been determined, i think, not to do it in a way that what we used to call fleet street would wish, to kind of be to kind of be at the beck and call of news editors and deadlines and all that sort of thing. so, they could have announced first thing this morning that she had gone into labour in the early hours,
5:53 pm
and that the baby had been born. but they've left it, according to their timetable and maybe they were not telling the people in buckingham palace precisely, they were keeping it to themselves. now, william and kate did that a little bit with the birth of george, five years ago. they kept it... they wanted to inform family and withhold it from the wider world, all of those hundreds gathered outside that hospital in west london. but onlyjust for a couple of hours in the case of harry and meghan, they've kept the news of the birth for, well, i can't do this... nine hours or so. do you think this is a measure of their determination to have a private life? i think so. as well as deal with their public duties? i think it is absolutely a reflection of that. i think they are putting down a very determined marker right from the beginning that they will wish to ensure that their family, their son, their own lives, are clearly
5:54 pm
demarcated between their responsibility to carry out public functions and duties as members of the royal family and the private life they are determined to have. and this little boy, don't have a name yet, will not be anything like as important a member of the royal family as george and charlotte. this little boy isn't automatically entitled to the style his royal highness, he won't automatically be designated as a prince. it'll be up to the queen to change the rules because i won't go into too much detail, but that is the way it is. an exception had to be made so that william's son would be prince george, his royal highness prince george. you know, it all comes together in the minds of harry and meghan to the style his royal highness, he won't automatically be you know, it all comes together
5:55 pm
in the minds of harry and meghan that they are not as centrally important to the constitutional future of this country as william and kate. that gives them greater latitude and they will take advantage of that and expect people to be just sort of understanding and give them greater space. and they will, we can be sure, insist upon it. i wonder what they will learn or take from the experience of william and kate, the duke and duchess of cambridge? i am always struck by the fact it is the duchess who takes the family photos, charlotte's birthday, for example. yes, i don't know whether meghan is a great enthusiast with the camera. i'm sure there will be no shortage of volunteers or photographers that'll be dying to come in. like any doting parents, i'm sure they will be taking snapshots madly at the moment. and they will be perhaps releasing some of those but i think we can expect some official, as it were, photocall, as he said in the next couple of days, but it will be on their terms. nicholas witchell. as evening falls here in windsor, the new parents are
5:56 pm
getting to know their new baby a little boy. we wait on his name, expected perhaps in a couple of days. we say goodbye now to our viewers around the world on this bbc news special. good evening. for a good evening. fora bank good evening. for a bank holiday, it hasn't been a wash—out but it has definitely been on the chilly side. nothing like the warmer easter weekend we enjoyed, and the news is for the week ahead it'll remain chilly, pretty wet midweek as well. we have the remnants of a weather front with us at the moment, that'll keep quite a lot of cloud across northern england through the night, also feeding into north wales, parts of east anglia during the small hours, bringing showery outbreaks of rain, a little bit for northern ireland, too. clear skies across the north across scotland, some wintry showers and a chilly night to come, and extensive frost with rural lows of minus three. to the south, we are looking at sixes and sevens as our
5:57 pm
skies are clear. tuesday will start with a lot of fine weather, always more cloud in the central swathe. as the day brightens, i think the sunshine will inject some energy into the atmosphere and see some lively showers breaking out. some more showers to come on tuesday afternoon. and and, again, wintry across the highlands and grampian is and it'll feel chilly at just seven degrees in aberdeen, ten for glasgow and edinburgh. some of these shows across northern ireland, northern england, wales, the midlands and east anglia, they could be punchier fa res east anglia, they could be punchier fares through the afternoon. some thicker cloud in the south—west in the second part of the day, that ru ns the second part of the day, that runs in ahead of this area of low pressure pushing on to our shores overnight tuesday into wednesday. this will bring rain to all areas, a very cold day to the north of the easterly wind off the north sea, some wintry weather across the northern half of scotland, rain further south, brightening skies through the afternoon, some sunshine with the chance of some very intense
5:58 pm
thundery showers. still very disappointing temperatures, feeling all the more chilly factoring in the windy, especially across scotland with a 20 mph sustain wind on wednesday afternoon. top temperature in aberdeenjust 6 wednesday afternoon. top temperature in aberdeen just 6 degrees. 15 degrees in london but the windy will have a knock—on effect on how that feels. through the latter part of the week, the lowest not to pull out into the north sea with and settled in the north, on thursday, looking quieter by friday, next weekend it looks like high pressure will build once again and finally the weather turning milder if not potentially warmer.

it's a boy, the duchess of sussex has given birth. i am annita mcveigh in windsor. the duchess of sussex went into labour in the early hours of this money with the baby weighing seven pounds and three ounces. mother and baby are doing incredibly well and it has been the most amazing experience i could ever possibly imagine. how any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. but we are both absolutely thrilled. the baby boy is
