after their wedding, on the day their first royal tour began, the announcement came from kensington palace that the couple were expecting. it added an extra level of excitement to an already much anticipated tour of australia and the pacific region. what followed was months of media obsessing about meghan and her burgeoning bump and that obsession was catching. throughout her pregnancy, meghan kept a diary of engagements, usually carried out in sky—high stilettos. in february, she faced criticism in the british press forjetting off to new york for a costly baby shower, organised by celebrity friends. 0ne month later and shortly after this engagement, her maternity leave began. although palisades stressed the duchess would be holding work—related meetings in private. ——

palace aides. this is how harry was introduced to the world 35 years ago on the steps of a private wing of saint mary's hospital. just as prince william had been and then william's children. but now harry and meghan have said they want time to celebrate privately as a family so the public will have to wait for the first pictures of the child who is seventh in line to the throne. meghan's birth in los angeles didn't make global headlines but her babies ultimately will. and no doubt her difficult relationship with her father thomas, the grandfather, will be subject to public scrutiny. and her mother, who lives in california, is expected to spend more time in the uk. this is where baby sussex will pull home. the cottage has undergone a multi—million pound

will be a terrific father. 0k, dominic, thank you for talking to us. chief executive of the invictus games foundation. a huge amount of interest from the states as america woke up to the news a few hours behind the uk, finding out the news that the duchess of sussex was in labour and had given birth to a son. of course, meghan with her american and african—american heritage very much in evidence at the wedding service here, almost a year ago in windsor and much speculation that perhaps in some way, if it's not reflected in this baby's name, there will be a strong american influence in the way this child is brought up. you saw a short while ago a tweet of congratulations from michelle 0bama, the former first lady. she wrote
6:21 pm
congratulations meghan and harry. we are so thrilled for both of you and cannot wait to meet him. hashtag royal baby. a hashtag which is trending on social media. no surprises with that. a reflection also of the star power this couple has, the duke and duchess of sussex, straddling the world of royalty and showbiz with meghan's background as an actress. let's cross to washington and talk to danjohnson. give us a flavour of the reaction stateside to this news? there has been fascination in the marriage of harry and meghan and in the impending birth of their son. so there will be interesting from dedicated royal watchers right across the state, but particularly in california, los angeles where meghan markle grew up. we have just had a statement released from the
6:22 pm
school she attended as a child in los angeles. immaculate heart high school middle school. they say they congratulate meghan markle, the duchess of sussex and her husband prince harry on the birth of their son. the school community extends its best wishes of happiness to the family. we are seeing a lot of celebration across the states. there has been an interest, meghan markle has been an interest, meghan markle has barely been off the front covers of the magazines here. big questions about what the baby will be called, whether it will be a boy or a girl. what the relationship will be like with meghan's parents, the boy's grandparents. we know her relationship with her father has been strained from before the wedding because he didn't attend, thomas marco. people will be intrigued to see how this boy grows up, what his connection is back to the states, whether he gets us citizenship or not. at the moment we
6:23 pm
understand meghan markle is still a us national while she is still trying to sort out the paperwork to achieve british nationality. will she apply for us citizenship and behalf of her new son? all the sorts of questions royal watchers here are intrigued about. but the main priority is to try and work out what this boy will be called. bob was one suggestion i had earlierfrom a little boy in windsor. but that wasn't on the shortlist, as far as i could see or any of the favourites from the bookies. i wonder also how much that american influence will come to bear in the child's upbringing. things like thanksgiving will be as important a part of this household as christmas is, for example? yes, that is one thing people are interested in, how much will that american influence extend now into the british royal family?
6:24 pm
something that has not been seen for a long time. perhaps we have never seen the influence of african—american culture on the british royal family. how african—american culture on the british royalfamily. how much will that show through, how close were the relationship be with meghan's mother in particular. how often will the boy visit the states, if at all? what role will he play as he grows 7 what role will he play as he grows you what role will he play as he grows up? you would expect him to take an interest in things relating to the united states. this news brokejust after the main morning news shows went off air. those who care about the royalfamily, went off air. those who care about the royal family, there went off air. those who care about the royalfamily, there is a strong minority of people who are deeply fascinated by the royalfamily. it is something they don't have in the united states so they take a natural interest in certain people. there has been coverage trying to explain where the new prince will fit into the line of succession and what his
6:25 pm
family tree is. we have been going back over the history of the royal family. there has been talk about diana and wallis simpson the other american divorcee. there has been speculation and people keen to see exactly where this boy will fit in the royalfamily, exactly where this boy will fit in the royal family, with exactly where this boy will fit in the royalfamily, with what exactly where this boy will fit in the royal family, with what angles of american culture, how much his american background will be part of his life now growing up. just before we cross from you, i mentioned the tweet of congratulations from michelle 0bama. she and barack 0bama when they met the queen and the duke of edinburgh, got along famously but has there been any word of congratulations from president trump that we know of? no, nothing yet from the white house. perhaps that's not so surprising given president trump wasn't invited to their wedding last year when michelle and

barack 0bama wedding last year when michelle and ba rack 0bama wear. wedding last year when michelle and barack 0bama wear. that was seen as a snub at the time of the president has not tweeted anything relating to the royal baby this morning. i am sure something will come from the white house but president trump not rushing to issue the congratulations thatis rushing to issue the congratulations that is coming from other quarters. danjohnson, that is coming from other quarters. dan johnson, from washington, that is coming from other quarters. danjohnson, from washington, thank you. i spoke to victoria howard, the royal historian for her take on this news. i think we will see this baby, this boy, the earl of dumbarton, ta ke this boy, the earl of dumbarton, take a role like princess eugenie or princess beatrice. they work but they do have titles. i think we can expect quite a normal life for this young royal. he won't be a prince of course, unless the queen intervenes on that matter, but what title would he have? so it will be prince
6:27 pm
harry's secondary title. he is the duke of sussex and the secondary title is the earl of dumbarton, which is a scottish title and that is the one his son will carry. so perhaps there will be a nod to a visit to scotland at some point for this new baby. but all the focus now is on seeing those first images of the three of them as a family. how do you think they are going to manage the huge desire for images of the baby, with their desire also to give this child and themselves as new parents, a private family life? i think there is a couple of things. the official photos will be taken in the grounds of windsor castle. it will be harry, meghan, baby, a cameraman and a photographer. that instantly puts them at ease and there is far less press there than there is far less press there than there were for prince george, when william and kate came out of
6:28 pm
hospital. and they will manage it with their instagram account. they are living at the cottage in the grounds of windsor castle which gives them enormous privacy and by staying behind the walls, of course they are aware people are interested in seeing and learning about their baby. so i think they will use their instagram page for more personal snaps. we have seen a few recently where megan has posted and the way the captions are written, using the american word diapers instead of nappies. i think they will use that channel really quite productively and help the people see into their newborn's life, but in a way that they control. that was royal historian, victoria howard, talking earlier. we also heard from vanity fair's correspondent, who spoke to carrie gracie. everything happened
6:29 pm
very quickly and i'm not sure they we re very quickly and i'm not sure they were aware that had been born which gives you some indication as to how private this birth has been kept. katie, interesting thinking about harry and william, so conscious of course press interest, press intrusion and the paparazzi and the interest in deciding their own publicity? i think in terms of how they raise this baby, prince harry grew up rarely out of the spotlight. i was surprised he spoke to the cameras today and came out and spoke to the bbc, which was brilliant and unexpected. they made it clear they didn't want the huge attention on the birth, they want the details to remain private. probably the way they are going to raise this baby is out of the spotlight as they can.
6:30 pm
harry said he wants this child to have an ordinary life. whether a royal baby can have an ordinary life, iam not royal baby can have an ordinary life, i am not sure. royal baby can have an ordinary life, iam not sure. but royal baby can have an ordinary life, i am not sure. but it signals to me he wants to give this child an ordinary childhood as possible. you have watched the prince come out and announce the birth of a son and and announce the birth of a son and a more delighted father it is hard to imagine. absolutely beaming, thrilled, delighted, had that look of absolute amazement on his face and said how any woman gives birth is beyond his comprehension. they are obviously in those first flushes of almost disbelief, you know when you actually can't believe that you've become a parent. and that was katie nicholl, the royal correspondent for vanity fair talking to philippa thomas and carrie gracie. you could see certainly all over prince harry's face and voice todayjust how overawed he was by the experience he
6:31 pm
had just shared with his wife as they welcomed their new baby into they welcomed their new baby into the world. i am here on the long walk, the scene of that carriage procession at the wedding of the royal couple, almost exactly one year ago today, just a few days away from the first wedding anniversary, and here they are welcoming their new baby into the world. there has been a steady stream of people here taking in the view of windsor castle, this beautiful approach to the castle behind me today. pausing to ta ke the castle behind me today. pausing to take stock of the royal baby's arrival to look at all the media gathered here reporting the news and giving us their thoughts as well. not very far away from the other side of the castle on the high street in windsor is ben. what is the atmosphere like there? well, today in the uk it is a public holiday so they have been lots of people in windsor, notjust tourists from abroad who have come here all
6:32 pm
through the year to enjoy seeing the royal castle and palaces and to get a feel of the fine royal history here but also people from the uk. i spoke to a few people who said they are big supporters of the royal family and they looked and thought there might be a baby today so we will come today in the hope we will be in the town when it happens. sure enough, one lady told me she was walking around the castle behind me, going on a tour when the announcement was made. she said her and herfriends announcement was made. she said her and her friends were delighted to hear of the birth of prince harry's son, whose name we don't know at the moment. all we know about him is that he will have the title earl of dumbarton, harry's secondary title. the bookmakers in the uk believe arthur is the hot favourite to be the name but at the moment we don't know.
6:33 pm
then, thank you very much. lots of names being speculated about. everything from albert to bob, the one that caused us most amusement from the little boy in windsor. something a lot more traditional, probably. let's find out more about the thoughts of another royal watcher on news of the birth of the duke and duchess's little boy, liz brewer, former diary editor at tatler magazine. she spoke to me earlier today. i am wondering whether it is possible that diana's father, earl spencer, his name was john. and john is one name nobody seems to have mentioned so far. it is possible that it could bejohn. it would be a lovely thought to name the earl of dumbarton john. it would be a lovely thought to name the earl of dumbartonjohn. and something else which came up, i was
6:34 pm
listening to some of the interviews, he is not an hrh at the moment and it is unlikely the queen will do anything at this stage but if and when charles becomes king, he will then be a prince. that'll happen automatically. but, at the moment, no, hejust will automatically. but, at the moment, no, he just will be the earl of dumbarton. the other thing which i think is very interesting as i think it is wonderful her mother is there. i remember when i had my baby it was fantastic to have a nanny but they do boss you around a bit. but having your mother, who has actually had a baby, and still remembers what you had to go through, it really is more helpful than having a nanny! a lot of nannies have never had bad dude make babies! the first few weeks is very helpful to have your mother around. it was incredibly helpful and very sensible. how much do you

6:36 pm
as you possibly can on that little baby. yes, no doubt they will be gazing adoringly at their new baby. that was liz brewer, former diary editor at tatler magazine speaking to me earlier. expect a couple of days according to prince harry to see the first images of the new pay become of the three of them as a family. the timing works well for him before he travels to the netherlands on thursday for the launch of the invictus games 2020 but, for now, he and his wife, the duchess, are settling into life as new parents. we know the duchess's mother, as my last guest was mentioning, doria ragland, is with them to help them with that process. and they're home, then newly renovated home at frogmore cottage affords them the sort of privacy they want for these early weeks and months. they will know there is huge appetite for

those images to be seen so i don't think they will keep everyone waiting very long. much more from winsor very soon but, right now, back to you, tim, in the studio. thank you very much indeed. we will be back with you in a few minutes' time. let's catch up with some of the other main stories. governments across the world are being urged to ta ke across the world are being urged to take decisive action to protect the environment following the damning report by the united nations into the state of the natural world. the global assessment is the largest of its kind taking over three years to compile and involving hundreds of experts. among its key findings are that up to 1 million species are at risk of extinction, with 40% of amphibians under threat, a thread of marine mammals as well. —— make a third of marine mammals as well. our science correspondent is in paris.

british royal, it'll be a royal in the global sense as well. the global star power, as you are saying earlier of harry and meghan together will rub off onto their son. do you detect an extra special interest in this couple and this baby because of that? because here we have the royal background and the showbiz background and the showbiz background merging, and here we have the product of this marriage, this new baby boy, so is there an extra special interest in them because of that? yes i think so because harry has always been one of the more popular members of the royal family, from when he was really young. we saw those photos, those images of him going behind the coffin of his mother when she passed away and people have felt invested in him as he has grown up and now he is married, he has had this lovely little son, people are thinking this is the happy ending a lot of people

have wa nted is the happy ending a lot of people have wanted for him for quite awhile. i think actually, meghan coming into the fold has opened a lot of doors in terms of new experiences, not only for them as a couple but for this child is going forward as well. it'll be a very global phenomenon. and a global, i suppose you could say, child in the grand scheme of things. we are just a week shy of their first wedding anniversary. a lot has happened in that year for the couple. this is all good publicity for the royal family, isn't it? definitely. we we re family, isn't it? definitely. we were thinking it has seemed to have passed so quickly since we were watching that carriage procession. a little bit less in terms of crowds this time around but i think that has marked the difference between this baby and prince george and princess charlotte and prince louis. princess charlotte and prince louis. prince harry and meghan wanted to do this their way, they didn't want the

hysteria, the weighting on the doorstep, they didn't want to have to parade out after meghan had given birth and stand in front of cameras. that is a personal decision and it will carry on through the baby's line. harry and meghan want to make sure this baby grows up with as much normality as it can do. we know it is in normality as it can do. we know it isina normality as it can do. we know it is in a privileged position. we know it'll grow appear which is very grand, but harry and meghan want to give it a good start in life as much as they can and actually enjoy the things many other little boys enjoy as they grow up. yes. and i covered the births of prince george in princess charlotte and i was there for those moments when william and catherine stood on the steps of the lindo wing, that private maternity hospital, in front of the world's media. we are slightly removed with this birth because prince harry came out, that was a little surprise, we we re out, that was a little surprise, we were not expecting that but he came out excitedly and announce the birth. but the news we were given,
6:55 pm
the expectation management that was going on i think sets the tone for how this couple will try to tread that very fine balance between the desire for publicity, the desire for images that they know the public will have, and their desire for a private life. absolutely and we have seen that as well with william and kate to a certain extent. they know that in orderfor the kate to a certain extent. they know that in order for the royal family to actually function, in order to get the awareness they want, they do a lot of work in terms of charity awareness and the media is a big pa rt awareness and the media is a big part of that, but equally they know they can't just switch part of that, but equally they know they can'tjust switch it on and off. they need to strike that fine balance between when they want their private life and also what the media and the rest of the public want to see, they want to remember they are partly taxpayer funded and a lot of people say, actually, ifeel invested in them as a couple, as a family now. and, actually, it is a very nice thing to see. james, good to have you with us, from the royal
