welcome back to windsor, where earlier today the duchess of sussex gave birth to a healthy baby boy. mother and baby are both doing equally well according to father prince harry, the duke of sussex. the baby weighs £7 and three ounces and is seventh in line to the throne. well, it was a little bit of a surprise when prince harry came out and spoke to the media himself to announce the news because the couple had made it known that once the baby was born they would spend a couple of days celebrating privately asa couple of days celebrating privately as a family, but i think it was very evident in what the duke had to say that he couldn't contain his joy,
8:31 pm
his excitement, to share the news that his baby son had arrived. i'm very excited to announce that meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning, a very healthy boy. mother and baby are doing incredibly well. it has been the most amazing experience i could ever possibly imagine. how any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension! but we are both absolutely thrilled, and so grateful to all this love and support from everybody out there. it has been amazing. we just wanted to share this with everybody. amazing. we just wanted to share this with everybodylj amazing. we just wanted to share this with everybody. i still thinking about names? still thinking about names. the baby is a little bit overdue so we had a bit of time to think about it. but, yeah, that's the next bit. for us, i think we will be seeing you guys and probably two days' time as planned, as a
8:32 pm
family, to be able to share it with you guys so everyone family, to be able to share it with you guys so everyone can see family, to be able to share it with you guys so everyone can see the baby. you can't stop smiling. every birth is amazing but for your own child it must have been...” birth is amazing but for your own child it must have been... i haven't been many births. this is definitely my first birth. but it was amazing, absolutely incredible. and, as i said, iam absolutely incredible. and, as i said, i am so incredibly proud of my wife. and as every father and parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for. so i am just over the moon. well, for now we are calling the new arrival baby sussex. amongst the bookies favourites are albert, perhaps philip after his great grandfather, james, alexander and alfred are up there as well. all very traditional names. but let's see ina very traditional names. but let's see in a couple of days maybe we will find out the name when we are also expected to see those first images of the three of them
8:33 pm
together. this new family. let's talk to colin dyer, the chief executive of the charity wellchild one of four charities that the duke and duchess of sussex are patrons of. colin, you are very welcome. think you for talking to us this evening. you obviously know the duke very well because of his work with charity. tell about it. as you said, he has been patron of the charity for over ten years so he's done lots of things with us, he regularly comes to our events, he has met lots of young people and children we've supported over those years and has played a very important role in our development in that time. and something i've always been struck by when seeing images of prince harry on various visits when talking to children, isjust how on various visits when talking to children, is just how easily he seems to get along with them, his manner is so relaxed with children.
8:34 pm
i'm sure you think you'll make a fantastic dad. i'm sure he'll make a fantastic dad. i'm sure he'll make a fantastic dad. i'm sure he'll make a fantastic dad. as i say, he has come across a lot of children and young people during his time as our patron, and every single one he has met goes away with a fantastic story to tell. he spends hours at our awards every year meeting some of the young people we support, sitting, chatting, playing, kneeling down, crawling around, all that stuff. so i'm sure he will, yes. yes, he has definitely always been someone yes, he has definitely always been someone who is prepared to have lots of fun with the children he meets. he has, and certainly were some of the children that wellchikld supports we are caring for children with very serious and complex issues, and that is not is always easy for people to deal with but he has a ways been brilliant at that. he has a ways been someone who could walk into a room full of people and
8:35 pm
children like that and just get stuck in and get on. —— mike wellchild. and i know you're charity wellchild. and i know you're charity wellchild was chosen by the duke and duchess as one for charities to receive donations in lieu of gifts on the arrival of their baby. tell us more on the arrival of their baby. tell us more about that. it was absolutely remarkable. it just us more about that. it was absolutely remarkable. itjust came from nowhere for us that i think there was a bit of social media around raising money for charities and things like that ahead of the birth, and then when the duke and duchess launched their instagram account, which obviously rocketed hundreds of thousands of people within a couple of days, they asked for these four charities to receive donations in lieu of gifts for the baby, and within a day we had thousands of pounds coming online and through some of the giving websites. so at the moment i think websites. so at the moment i think we are pushing more or less £10,000
8:36 pm
that has been raised for the charity through that. wellchild, one of the things we do is provide nursing support for children and young people with very complex issues, and we probably raise enough money now well over 300 pushing to 400 hours of support because of that. so that will make an incredible difference to your charity. in this came as a com plete to your charity. in this came as a complete surprise to you, they didn't tell you in advance they were going to do this? not at all. i think their instagram went live on a monday and by the end of that week those donations started coming in. and because of that our instagram followers for wellchild shot up by thousands within a day, which of course for any charity awareness of what we do is very important. and it really is typical of the way the duke and duchess have supported charities, even at the wedding there
8:37 pm
we re charities, even at the wedding there were hundreds of families, 40 families that wellchild supports are invited to windsor castle on the day of the wedding. it seems everything they do, there is a wee something linked into that help charities like ours that really need that support. they are probably not watching tv at the moment, let's face it. they are probably preoccupied. but if they we re probably preoccupied. but if they were watching, what is your message for them? i'm sure if they're not watching tv they are probably looking at social media from time to time. and the most brilliant thing is so many wellchild young people and children and families have posted messages of support. and i think at such a special time for these charities and i don't think it's just the four charities really that were asked for support i think every so there were charity they are involved with has benefited in some way from this remarkable media coverage they have around the birth of their child. so i think it is just a thank you from all of the
8:38 pm
charity is to be included in this, to be included in the wedding, and all those things, it really makes such an important difference. thank you, colin. good to talk to you. wellchild, the charity of a seriously ill children of which prince harry is a patron. and there's been lots of reaction from the us. the duchess of course is still an american citizen. huge interest in how that will influence this baby's interest in how that will influence this ba by‘s life, interest in how that will influence this baby's life, this baby because my upbringing. that is something i spoke about earlier with the sunday times royal correspondent. i'm sure baby sussex is probably going to make a trip to the us at some point in the next few months. meghan has a lot of family there, a lot of friends, it is her home. i'm sure we will see him taking a trip, probably privately come in the next few months to america. the us already
8:39 pm
has a role, it is the first anglo—american baby born into the british royalfamily, anglo—american baby born into the british royal family, that anglo—american baby born into the british royalfamily, that is anglo—american baby born into the british royal family, that is quite landmark. name wise let's see. harry was saying in that interview that they've had some time to think of names. i suspect, they've had some time to think of names. isuspect, knowing they've had some time to think of names. i suspect, knowing a they've had some time to think of names. isuspect, knowing a bit about the couple, i suspect we will get something a little bit modern with a twist that reflects the heritage on both sides. and how do you think american heritage will influence the upbringing of this baby? somebody earlier described meghan asa baby? somebody earlier described meghan as a quintessential california girl in her attitude, and thatis california girl in her attitude, and that is undoubtedly going to influence how she brings up the baby. i've written about that over the last two weeks. we have heard they've been eyeing up an american school in windsor, possibly, as a place that child might go. i'm sure things like, we know meghan is keen to have the baby's american heritage
8:40 pm
marked and celebrated. thanksgiving and july four might be just as important as as christmas at sandringham for the new child. being the first anglo—american baby is a big thing. it is a british prince born into the british royalfamily that will live most of its life in england, but it is an international child born to a globally famous couple and i'm sure it's upbringing will reflect that. beyond her fans who followed her especially in her role in suits, the tv series, the public here has had a much longer relationship with prince harry, they have seen him go through incredibly difficult times as a young boy, they have seen him as a man speak about those difficult times and how he has come through them and about his clear desire for a family. so there isa clear desire for a family. so there is a lot of emotion, i think, attached to the batch of this baby. you are right, everyone has felt for harry and wanted him to have a
8:41 pm
successful and happy personal life ever since watching him follow his mother's coffin when he was 12 years old. people have willed him to be happy in his life and every time i've spoken to him in the last few yea rs i've spoken to him in the last few years he's always talked about how important family life would be for him at the right time. when i last interviewed him in 2016, he was single, he was hoping for someone to slip into his life, was the phrase he used. and a few weeks later meghan dead. to see that interview he gave just after the birth, with the queen plasma courses watching, he was just bursting with happiness and that was a lovely thing to see. iam and that was a lovely thing to see. i am thrilled for him. so much has happened to... you said you interviewed him last before he met meghan. so what has happened in such a short time, theirfirst anniversary isjust a short time, theirfirst anniversary is just a few days away. this time almost a year ago here we wear for that glorious day with the horses processing up here, incredible. they only met a few
8:42 pm
yea rs incredible. they only met a few years ago, they got engaged pretty quickly, but they both seem really happy and! quickly, but they both seem really happy and i think for harry as someone happy and i think for harry as someone who has been through ups and downs in his personal and family life, when he knew, he knew, and it's wonderful to see him now become a father, something he has always wanted. they know the massive interest there is in them as a couple, that there will be in this baby, here is the evidence around us is the world's media gather to report on this news. how will they balance what they know is that huge interest in the baby with a private family life bringing that baby up with a good degree of privacy?“ you look at the cambridge family, they have managed it very successfully. we have barely seen prince louis for a year. but we had very carefully stage managed photographs released, taken by the cambridges themselves. prince george has been at school, the media are very respectful of that and their
8:43 pm
privacy. yes, of course there will be enormous interest in this baby at the couple for years to come. but the couple for years to come. but the public are also fully aware that harry and meghan have an entitlement toa harry and meghan have an entitlement to a private life and so does their new baby son, and i'm sure they will be given that. the baby, baby sussex, whatever he will be called, we mightfind sussex, whatever he will be called, we might find out in a couple of days, is seventh in line to the throne but prince harry is a very prominent royal so can we expect eventually that little boy to grow up eventually that little boy to grow up to have a more prominent role or not? we don't know. it is very early days and speculation now. but baby sussex possibly has more freedom and a unique position in the royal family that any child we've seen before. seventh in line, not an hrh at birth, that has been the family's choice, the queen has not given him a title. he will not become an hrh until the prince of wales becomes king. who knows if he will take on official royal duties. we know the
8:44 pm
prince of wales has a very streamlined vision for the future of the monarchy. harry and meghan have a big part in that, so will their child. but whether that child takes on official duties, we will see. that was the sunday times royal correspondent talking to me a little earlier today. baby sussex as we know him for now is spending his first evening with his parents at the family home not farfrom here. a rather grand cottage, it has to be said, newly renovated and ready for this expanding family. and like any new pa rents expanding family. and like any new parents they will be getting used to all sorts of things like feeding the baby, changing nappies, everything else, but with the added expectation that they are all too well aware of, that they are all too well aware of, that they are all too well aware of, that the public wants to see this new baby. we expect that to happen, the first images, in the next couple of days. but this is a couple who
8:45 pm
are adept at handling the media, coming from the worlds of the royal family and showbiz. so we will expect those images, but then a good degree of privacy for that child, that new home is perfectly set up to allow them that privacy in the days and weeks ahead. as they become used to be new parents. more from windsor ina to be new parents. more from windsor in a little bit. but right now back to the studio. there has been a warm welcome to the news of the duke and duchess of sussex's baby in brixton. the royals made one of their first official visits together to the area last year, so emma north has been back to gauge reaction. a warning first that there's some flash photography in her report. it was in january last year that prince harry and meghan dropped by
8:46 pm
brixton's radio represent. everyone is listening and i'm in the same room as the royal couple right now. in brixton right now the bank holiday had really given people a reason to celebrate. there was extra love and support the newest member of the royal family. very excited. i'm excited to see his hair. i'm really excited to see what the colour will be. i think it will be ginger. it is not the world were used to live in, it is diversifying in the royal family are joining in. another baby, a lot of mess in the house, but i'm sure they have stuff to clean that up. i really like what harry and meghan have done for african—american cultures and for how they are creating a different, how they are creating a different, how they are paving the way for a new face of the royal family, much more progressive and deviating from what we've seen before, i think it is really good and it shows a new side to the royal family we haven't seen before. prince harry and
8:47 pm
meghan's visit was one of their first official visits as a couple. they came to see how the station used music and media to inspire young people. they now have their own young person to nurture and inspire. today there was just a bank holiday baby boost. cheers to the royal baby! with me now is dotted at watching that piece, that is what it means to people on the streets of britain. they feel as if now they count, they are relevant. they are. and it is a change, a momentous day, and i think a lot of people have been scared to mention the fact that it is a mixed—race baby. don't be scared! what else is it? please, talk about it! and i think when it comes to integration, and we are in troubled
8:48 pm
times politically, generally, everything, about economically, but i think the baby will be a sign of hopein i think the baby will be a sign of hope in that if you are british, it doesn't matter where you are from, who you are, what you do, you can make a difference. and also people talking about dual nationality and stuff. no, meghan and harry, they have made a difference to society. i think a lot of people, especially my generation, would not have expected this data ever happen. and it has. soi this data ever happen. and it has. so i think we need to celebrate that fa ct. so i think we need to celebrate that fact. it started last year with the wedding. with a hearing earlier about ownership. and like you said, the one thing that has not been said is the ownership that people of colour also feel. the subject has not been spoken about. it is swept under the carpet and i'm not sure why. this is not people asking why the press don't speak about it, people have felt possibly
8:49 pm
uncomfortable to talk about it. and i don't know why. when i walk down my local high street or you walk along 0xford my local high street or you walk along oxford street, you see people from different nationalities and backgrounds, and i think with the royalfamily backgrounds, and i think with the royal family now they are at that stage where that has happened for them. harry is charity. the african continent is looking at today cosmic news and cheering. there will probably be lots of dancing. drinking. they will be doing it in style! in that piece they were at represent, the organisation. that is what this is all about. this is one of the main thing is we have been talking about, obviously, np there we re talking about, obviously, np there were britain today people don't feel represented. in terms of, going back to africa and the wider commonwealth, there is now a definite tangible tie, the
8:50 pm
commonwealth feels very relevant. more relevant than ever before. and i think more relevant than ever before. and ithink in more relevant than ever before. and i think in terms of discussions and people because my perception of the commonwealth and the commonwealth countries will change, because i think there has been this not mind set of people thinking it's them and us, and! set of people thinking it's them and us, and i don't think there has ever been. i think it may have happened at some point where there was some kind of divide, but i think possibly baby sussex, we won't talk about the names. . . baby sussex, we won't talk about the names... i spent two hours this afternoon on the radio asking my listeners on bbc three counties radio, what would you call the baby? but i think beyond that, i think there is a point or at least the baby will help to bridge those gaps or bridges within certain countries. ina or bridges within certain countries. in a sense i would say not in a peacekeeping position, but! in a sense i would say not in a peacekeeping position, but i think in terms of hope, like a beacon of
8:51 pm
hope to reach out to the wider communities. and i think the wedding last year, and meghan is already doing that for all the charity work and everything she's doing. she is reaching out to loads of communities. especially people who, as you say, may have not been able or thought we don't feel represented, we are british but we don't feel connected. you feel invisible as a personal of —— person of colour. meghan's lineage goes back to the plantations in georgia. her mother's family dotted up we are talking about slaves. so the fairy tale is incredible. this is a very modern family and they are doing things their way. it will be fascinating to see how baby sussex grows up. fascinating to see how baby sussex grows up. i think they should be respected for doing that. whether it isa
8:52 pm
respected for doing that. whether it is a procedural way of letting us broadcast as press know, we should give them time and space to do what they should do because by us crowding or other people expecting them to kind of sort of, well, to be interrogated, that is not the way, andi interrogated, that is not the way, and i think the way it has been handled, the way it has been conducted is great. it is a special day. we could have carried on, couldn't we? by dancing around the studio, hands up, just glorifying the special moment! it is a huge day. my kids can now look and say, hey, that is one of me! it's like, listen, one day, you could be a king ora listen, one day, you could be a king or a princess... i could go on! and you have got lots to talk about! thank you very much indeed. you are watching bbc news.
