10:40 pm
hello and welcome to our look ahead at the papers. lovely to see you both. many of the day's front pages are in so let's have a quick look. we will start with the daily mail. says it all, that picture. pride on the face of prince harry who pays tribute to his wife and says he and meghan are absolutely thrilled by the arrival of an amazing baby son. the front of the ft has done trump's threat to increase tariffs on all chinese imports which goes on to unnerve global markets.
10:41 pm
and a booming prince harry pictured on the front of the metro as he shares his baby joy on the front of the metro as he shares his babyjoy from the grounds at windsor. in the same picture on the front of the guardian. the lead story though is a warning that humanity is facing an urgent threat from the loss of earth's natural life. over the moon, the daily telegraph. the duke of sussex sharing his joy at becoming a father for the first time. that is their lead. and will finish with the times, the nhs is to begina finish with the times, the nhs is to begin a global recruitment drive for tens of thousands of foreign nurses over the next five years. health chiefs admitting they are failing to plan for elderly care. that is a quick look through some of those front pages. let's take a closer look, john and ruth. we'll start with the story of the day, a certain baby. fleet street is rejoicing and
10:42 pm
not just because it's baby. fleet street is rejoicing and notjust because it's not brexit on the front page. a royal baby is manna from heaven. i'm looking at the daily mirror, pages two to ii covering the story. is there anything else in the paper? what struck us looking at these pages is it feels like a thoroughly raw modern birth, prince harry, this little thing is absolutely to die for, using language she would not expect a royalty use, him looking slightly phased, dazed, knackered, and overjoyed as well. and that kind of personal touch that i doubt he's keeping it real. it feels very modern. i wasjust going to say that. they come across as a modern couple. you could never imagine philip and elizabeth back in 1948 saying i'm proud of this and he is to die for. the world has moved on. these are the new modern kids on the
10:43 pm
block aren't they? she was a tv star and an us background and her family background... almost a complete break from what is the rest of the royal family. if you look at william and kate, they are throwbacks in some ways, quite conservative. even when you think of fergie and her brood, in some ways they are quite conservative. but this is different. it was all spontaneous, you really felt it was. he was so thrilled to have a little baby boy! what is he going to call him? we don't know. do you have a sweepstake? no. we will find out in about two days and will get the picture everyone is waiting for. but it has all been stage—managed by harry, he made the announcement, there was no picture, the photocall outside the hospital. it looked like it was a home birth, the fact that they had seven or eight hours grace before it was announced that it looked like buckingham palace got it wrong, saying that the duchess of sussex was in labour, she had had the baby
10:44 pm
at 5:26am. so it all felt that they we re at 5:26am. so it all felt that they were in control of things. do you think that has backfired somewhat?” don't think so. i thinkjust the joy ofa don't think so. i thinkjust the joy of a royal baby i thinkjust washes anything else out. i think it is a good thing, very modern thing, announced on instagram, also there was the notion everyone was going to be girl. they have flipped expectations on the head with all of it. and we all agree it feels thoroughly modern. shall we turn to the front of the daily telegraph? like you said, another fantastic picture of him there. over the moon. like you said, that's the story. he is over the moon. and it's quite amusing because i switch the television on at two o'clock looking for some real news we could discuss, and it was meghan in labour. and bbc
10:45 pm
correspondence we re and it was meghan in labour. and bbc correspondence were spending hours and hours discussing the fact she was in labour. oh, she's in labour! yes, she is in labour. and half an hour later she had the baby at 5:26am. and then we were told it was three oz. if not 3.2 kilos. and then we realised the bbc was really up to speed! you've got to feel for us. we we re speed! you've got to feel for us. we were all fit hoping it wouldn't be out on duty! because you just don't know how it is going to go. but you like you say, they managed it so well. john was saying, they weren't going to have a photo shoot, and all sorts of complaints in the media. forget it, forget it. that is all over now. it is a lovely piece in the telegraph, the fact that they
10:46 pm
said a few weeks ago they would keep it private and she was saying the idea of a woman keeping the state of her cervix to herself is almost too much to bear? imagine a mother wanting to do childbirth her way! they have done it their way today. and the other thing is when we talk about them being a thoroughly modern couple, there was a piece earlier looking at the reaction from brixton and really reflecting i think british, the way british society is moving on and the mixed cultures. so they are sort of leading the way.” rememberwhen she went they are sort of leading the way.” remember when she went to brixton and she was treated like a star, and i thought it was terrific. we have moved on. the country has changed. and she reflects it in a curious way even though she is american. and because she is american it is global news, and you have michelle obama
10:47 pm
congratulating her on twitter. those things were not normally obviously happening. so it is very... it is a lovely story, good news. thoroughly relatable for lovely story, good news. thoroughly relata ble for lots lovely story, good news. thoroughly relatable for lots of people. let's turn to the ft. a bit of an economic story here. and it looks like donald trump has upset the markets, a good start to the year! he's very fond of doing that. a couple of things driving trump at the moment, one of them he is trying to contain chinese power. this is the new big kid on the block and america doesn't like it. last year he introduced 10% tariffs and then said that about because he is a negotiating man as he keeps telling us, he thought he would postpone the increase of the terrace to 25% and everybody breathed a sigh of relief and thought they would come to a compromise. now he has stepped up the pressure again by saying he is going to put the tariffs up to 25. when he will or won't, we don't
10:48 pm
know, but it is the way he operates. and there is another aspect, that when he was on the campaign trail he was a was going on about, make america great again, and he seems to think... that was a great impression. i forgot what i was going to say. but the idea that you ta ke going to say. but the idea that you take the rust belt cities of the states, which were under attack because of these wicked imports, he would change all that. so there is a bit of that as well. but i think economically that isn't going to get anywhere. because i've anything by putting up these big tariffs on a lot of these imports he actually damages quite a lot of businesses because these businesses then face higher input costs, and they are complaining. so he is sort of playing all sorts of political games here. and the timing of it, there is a 100 strong chinese delegation due
10:49 pm
to visit washington next week so it's like him walking into a saloon barand it's like him walking into a saloon bar and flipping the tables in the air. and this is the way he works. he puts people... he puts people on edge, flips the table up in the air, and disarms people and puts them on the back foot. and we were saying the back foot. and we were saying the chinese vice premier is supposed to be obviously furious that this has happened. so there where this is how he works, this is how he has worked from real estate deals up to being president of the free world. huawei is still being spoken about. we will go back to the telegraph. let's ta ke we will go back to the telegraph. let's take that back. hiring highway isa let's take that back. hiring highway is a threat to intelligence sharing.
10:50 pm
this is the chairman of the intelligence and security committee. he is saying that if we go down the highway route with our new g5 he is saying that if we go down the highway route with our new gs mobile network, and having highway equipment at the core of this. it is a security risk. and then america will say if you have highway at the ce ntre will say if you have highway at the centre of communications networks we don't want to share our security secrets with you because if you do that with them you are making yourself vulnerable to the chinese so yourself vulnerable to the chinese so donald trump has made it clear that if we do go down this route we threaten the route with the five eyes. australia has already fallen in line with the states, x expect canada will do quickly. we will be the odd one out. basically dominic grieve his agreeing with trump that actually huawei is a security risk, don't go there. any alternative?
10:51 pm
this is interesting because it it is the american tail wagging the uk dog. we had this separate story about the security leak, but i think if america says to the uk, if you give huawei any access even on the fringes, we won't share secrets with you. and i think that will concentrate british mines. and i think they were saying a lot of the cabinet ministers had qualms about huawei for this very reason.” cabinet ministers had qualms about huawei for this very reason. i was wondering, though, in terms of the hardware, because this is what huawei will provide, what other alternatives were there in terms of providers? there aren't really. there are some but they are more expensive. and huawei are said to be advanced. in europe there isn't a big infrastructure 5g maker, there
10:52 pm
are some, but ericsson and nokia and are some, but ericsson and nokia and a few of the other is... but huawei i seem to be more advanced. and cheaper. i think that's why philip hammond likes it. let's move on guardian. this was a huge story this morning, a huge story for everybody, but are we going to pay attention? we've been talking about a royal baby and then out in the real world there is this un report three years in the making, 450 scientists saying a million species could go extinct. it doesn't say buy when, we were just looking. but i guess if they go extinct it doesn't matter when. but it is pretty stark. one in ten insects, two in five amphibians. and it isa insects, two in five amphibians. and it is a real splash of water in the face to people. it is on the agenda in the us and america, there is the
10:53 pm
green deal that has been spoken about, obviously the extinction rebellion protests in the centre of town that have brought the debate to the centre of the conversation. and the centre of the conversation. and the tone for the scientists who have worked on the report is grabbing people by the lapels and saying we need to do something right now. but what will make people act? are we talking, does it come down to money? ido talking, does it come down to money? i do have some sympathy with this. it is very hard tojudge how i do have some sympathy with this. it is very hard to judge how well judged it is. obviously, we don't know quite what the timescale for this is. but the truth is they have pointed some very real truths, deforestation, the drainage of the wetlands, this all changes habitat for a lot of species dramatically. and this is why they are partly saying they will be such a lot of species. then the next logical step is that one of the species that will be badly damaged his bees, and they pollinate crops, therefore there will be all sorts of knock—on
10:54 pm
effects for crops. that is the logical... whether people will listen to this i don't know, but i do think it is worth looking at again. let's finish off on a story that has us all thinking. the front of the times, social media doesn't make teenagers happy. and it is a big study. yes, so this is going against received opinion in a way. the scientists examined data on 12,000 british children aged ten to 15. and the answer is a big no. it is surprising because all the sound and fury, the reports from various bodies are saying that social media... asa
10:55 pm
bodies are saying that social media... as a kid you may have a good or bad day in school you would good or bad day in school you would go home but you get away from it. but now social media, if someone is at you they can follow you on social media all the way to bedtime. the main aspect of the report is saying for most people, is that it doesn't have this outside impact, but we do know there are rock—solid cases of where social media has damaged, brought about suicide, a huge amount of stress. we are just looking at this very quickly tonight, i'd like to read more. and clearly why we don't rely on anecdotal evidence... kids are pretty adjustable and pretty robust. but speaking of my owfi pretty robust. but speaking of my own teenage pretty robust. but speaking of my owfi teenage years pretty robust. but speaking of my own teenage years i had the privilege of being as miserable as i wanted to be most of the time because that's what teenagers are, miserable. grumpy, smelly, all of
10:56 pm
that... all this coming your way, john. enjoy it while you can! that's it from the papers. don't forget, they are all online. you can catch up they are all online. you can catch up with moving pictures iplayer. stay with us, plenty more coming up at the top of the hour. good evening. for a good evening. fora bank good evening. for a bank holiday it certainly hasn't been a wash—out, but it definitely has been on the chilly side. nothing like the warm easter weekend we enjoyed. the news is through the week ahead it will remain chilly, pretty wet mid as well. the remnants of a weather front with us at the moment. that will keep a lot of cloud across northern england through the night, also feeding into north wales, parts of east anglia, during the small hours, bringing showery outbreaks of
10:57 pm
rain, little off in northern ireland as well. clear skies to the north across scotland, some wintry showers and a chilly night to come, and extensive frost with rural lows of -3. extensive frost with rural lows of —3. to the south sixes and sevens as the sky is clear. tuesday will start with fine weather, always more cloud across the central swathe where we have the remnants of the front. as the day brightens the sunshine injects some energy and we will see some lively showers. more showers to come on tuesday afternoon for scotland, and again wintry across the highlands and the grampians, it will feel chilly at just 7 degrees in aberdeen. ten for glasgow and edinburgh. some of these showers across northern ireland, northern ireland, north wales, the midlands, east into east anglia, could be pretty punchy in the afternoon. thick cloud here in the south—west through the second part of the day. that runs ahead of this area of low pressure that will push into our shores overnight tuesday and wednesday. this will bring rain to
10:58 pm
all areas, a very cold day to the north of the easterly wind of the north sea some weather. rain further south, brightening skies in the afternoon. sunshine but also the chance of intense thundery showers. still very disappointing temperatures. feeling all the more chilly when you factor in the wind. especially across scotland, with 20 mph sustained wind on wednesday afternoon. top temperature in aberdeenjust 6 degrees. afternoon. top temperature in aberdeen just 6 degrees. 15 degrees in london, but the wind i think will have a knock—on effect on how that feels. through the latter part of the week the low will start to pull out into the north sea. still u nsettled out into the north sea. still unsettled to the north on thursday, looking quieter in general by friday. next weekend it looks like high pressure will start to build again and finally the weather turning milder if not potentially warmer.
