6:33 pm
just like their north london rivals spurs did last night, as they defied the odds to join liverpool in the champions league final. i think it's very close to a miracle. good evening and thanks forjoining us. to be frank with you, i'm not sure my heart can take another incredibly dramatic night of european football, so fingers crossed i'm still standing for sportsday tomorrow. what a week it's been already. we'll be looking back at tottenham's stunning second half champions league comeback against ajax later in the show, but by the end of tonight we could be looking ahead to another all english european final.
6:34 pm
london rivals arsenal and chelsea could meet in the europa league final with positive results tonight. we'll assess arsenal's chances shortly, but first let's head to stamford bridge where chelsea host eintracht frankfurt. 0ur correspondent joe wilson is there. plenty to look forward to this evening, all to play for in this tie, especially. it stands at 1—1, and we can hope for a straightforward european night. in some ways chelsea might be expecting it, having grabbed that away goal in the first leg thanks to pedro's equaliser. it's a mix —— maggot is a significant night for chelsea. it's an exciting night for frankfurt, their first big chelsea. it's an exciting night for frankfurt, theirfirst big game in 40 frankfurt, theirfirst big game in a0 yea rs. frankfurt, theirfirst big game in a0 years. there have been many fans hanging around the ground for a couple of hours. several police horses and officers have been moved into place. they aren't expecting trouble but they are expecting lots of frankfurt fans may be without a ticket. as for maurizio sarri, he's
6:35 pm
been talking about building foundations, building a style of play for chelsea. you may say that all very well, but show us the trophy. maybe with champions league qualification insured in terms of their premier league place chelsea will be able to enjoy this occasion this evening as an occasion. maurizio sarri has been doing his pre—match media and we can hear some of that now. i think that we reached the target of the club. so we are very happy with this. now we have to play in another competition. the target is to reach the final. the first target. and the final target is to win the competition. of course, because, our feeling is that we deserve to win a trophy. maurizio sarri has faced incredible
6:36 pm
scrutiny so far this year. thing is, though, could end very positively, couldn't they? yes, absolutely. it's interesting, when we reflect on what has happened to spurs and liverpool, this week, two managers, juergen klopp and maurizio pochettino, have been able to build teams, and also cultures. very ha rd been able to build teams, and also cultures. very hard for anybody here at chelsea to do that as a manager because typically they are not here very long. i think going into a final, may be winning a trophy, would just enable maurizio sarri to build the kind of emotional connection with his players and fans. but let's consider the possible trouble ahead for chelsea. we know this transfer ban is in place. you can also speculate that even eden hazard will be on his way in the summer. he will play, we presume, from the start tonight and angola county will be injured. rubin another plus for chelsea. —— n'golo
6:37 pm
ka nte another plus for chelsea. —— n'golo kante will be injured. thank you for joining us. so a slight advantage for chelsea heading into their second leg. things are much healthier for arsenal. they take a 3—1 aggregate lead to valencia and there's much more at stake than the europa league trophy for unai emery‘s side. if they do end up winning the competition they'll qualify for next seasons champions league. we are here. we can take some examples. not yesterday, but also the past. but knowing it's difficult here we are going to play with all ambition, full motivation, and the preparation needs to be good for this match, also. so can arsenal do it? let's get the thoughts of our radio 5 live commentator alistair bruce ball who's with the former scotland midfielder don hutchison.
6:38 pm
welcome to valencia where the sun is shining and the wind disgusting. the players won't feel it inside the magnificent stadium this evening. arsenal bringing a 3—1 lead to valencia. but, don, beware the european comeback, we saw it with livable tuesday night, we saw it with tottenham last night, arsenal have got to be careful. —— liverpool tuesday night. the arsenal fans will get a scare some point tonight. the atmosphere is going to be electric and they will have to start well. if arsenal score first valencia will need three to take it extra time. do you feel arsenal have a goal in them? absolutely. arsenal have their best weapon in lacazette. does he get on the front foot, get aggressive, sit back to start with? ifi aggressive, sit back to start with? if i was him i would get on the front foot and get the away goal. if i was him i would get on the front foot and get the away goalm valencia score first, which could happen, they have a good home record, and the fans could get

involved, does arsenal have the character, resolve, and wherewithal to get through the tricky period? fantastic question because normally the answer would be no from what we have seen this season. tonight will be hostile. it will be an incredible atmosphere. unai emery might have prepared them for the worst, going down in the first half—hour, but they've got to react show courage. it's arsenal's ninth europa league semifinal game. a place in the final possibly awaits them. chelsea will be the other team waiting. will it be the other team waiting. will it be another all english final in europe? so we could have four british teams the two european finals this season. that's because tottenham followed liverpool's lead and pulled off their own miraculous comeback last night. the scenes after the match were quite incredible with tears shed and joyous celebrations after spurs somehow ovehauled a 3—0 deficit to score three times in the scond half

times in the second half to win their champions league semi final against ajax on away goals. our sports correspondent andy swiss looks back at a memorable night in amsterdam. its glory glory tottenham hotspur! unforgettable, indeed almost unthinkable, yes, it really did happen again. first liverpool, now totte n ha m , happen again. first liverpool, now tottenham, another champions league miracle. the parallels were almost uncanny. before long ajax lead to 3-0 uncanny. before long ajax lead to 3—0 on aggregate and the glum totte n ha m 3—0 on aggregate and the glum tottenham faces said it all. surely there was no way back. butjust as 2a hours earlier, remarkably there was. two goals from lucas moura meant one more and they would be through on away goals. and as the clock ticked into the sixth minute of stoppage time, guess what? commentator: they've done it! i cannot believe it. studio: as ajax slumped to the turf, spurs wheeled away in wonder. and on a night of the rawest emotion, their

6:43 pm
we did not see this coming, did we? yeah hugh when you take everything incto account it really is one of the most remarkable runs to the champions league final in recent years. this is their first champions league final. it has been a huge roller—coaster. think back to the summer, who would have predicted then? in the transfer window they didn't makea then? in the transfer window they didn't make a single signing, they didn't make a single signing, they didn't spend any money, and that was the first time a premier league side had gone through an entire summer tra nsfer had gone through an entire summer transfer window without making a single signing. they've also had this uncertainty with where they play their home games to deal with, spurs were aiming to be back at white hart lane in september, but there were multiple push backs right from the summer. danny rose even said he was getting bored of playing at the national stadium.
6:44 pm
now most of the gags aimed at spurs fans at that point were that this brand new stadium wouldn't even get the chance to see champions league football this season, that's because half way through the group campaign they were teetering on the edge of group b after a 2—2 draw against psv eindhoven. that left them them 1 point from their first three games, and even their manager admitted they needed a miracle. i'm not going to blame any player. if people want to blame someone, i blame myself, i'm the responsible person for the team. it is so difficult to qualify for the champions league. that was back in october. things went on to intensify around morrissey put it in a because real madrid and manchester united wanted new managers. “—
6:45 pm
madrid and manchester united wanted new managers. —— around mauricio pochettino. manchester united sacked jose mourinho. that left mauricio pochettino in pole position, seemingly, to go to old trafford in the summer. not the first time he had been linked with jobs elsewhere this season. real madrid were also having a shaky start to their season and there were rumours he might take over at the burner bow at the early start of the season —— early part of the season, as well. but he managed to focus his side to get that miraculous comeback in the champions league. —— the bernabeu. at the nou camp they scored in the 85th minute through that man, lucas moura, again, to get that last place in the last 16. but that was only because of the thinnest of margins to get them at that spot. they were locked on goal difference and points with inter—milan. it was because of their head—to—head record and their single away goal at the san siro in the
6:46 pm
group game that spurs got through. it really was complicated. theyjust managed to scrape through in the end. as well as all of that and all of the speculation with morrissey pochettino, they were just about building a premier league title challenge in february. but that fell away with this 2—1 defeat at burnley. you might remember that left mauricio pochettino with a something of a meltdown, really, at full—time, with the referee. five points behind manchester city and liverpool at the time. it was a result that made them not quite discover their best domestic form. they really did fall off a cliff domestically, but they carried on in europe. yes, they've almost been on relegation form domestically but have somehow bounced their way through these three miraculous

games. they beat manchester city. harry kane had to hobble off injured after that match. he might be involved in the champions league final, you never know. sergio aguero missed a first—half penalty in that match which would have put city in charge. but spurs survived. then they had the var twist in the final minute of the match at the etihad stadium which put them through. but that has been played against the backdrop of this dip in league form domestically. they lost for the first time in their new stadium to their london rivals, west ham. those injuries to dele alli and harry kane have left their front line options looking thin at times. they go into the last day of the premier league season just about hanging onto their champions league place for next season. they should just about to be secure in that fourth spot because

of their positive goal difference. i'll ghibli they've lost some games they shouldn't have, 13 in total. —— arguably they've lost. remarkable for a team that somehow is going to need one more victory to become the best side in europe in the champions league. lots of drama this week, but an eight goal swing between them and arsenal might be a bit too much for my heart. last night an emotional one for spurs fans. well it was such an emotional moment for spurs fans, and i wanted an idea ofjust how it felt, so i asked radio 5live presenter and proud spurs fan nihal arthanayake just what it was like when lucas moura's winner hit the net. there is myself and my 11—year—old son, we were sitting on the couch, look, jan vertonghen hits the bar, that our last chance. we are not going to get another chance. we had our moment. i am already in full
6:49 pm
spurs mode. i'm thinking, we got to the semifinal of the champions league, that's great, we have this new stadium, that's great, we are going into europe, i will take it, that's ok. i'm talking myself out of hoping is the seconds run out. and then lucas moura scores this goal. 0ut then lucas moura scores this goal. out of nowhere. there is a split second where i am not really processing what has happened. because it can't happen. because i'm a spurs fan. it doesn't happen to spurs fans. it happens to sergio aguero, last minute, qpr, it happens to those teams, not us. i see that. split second. i jump to those teams, not us. i see that. split second. ijump up, run to the opposite end of my living room, i don't live in windsor castle, it's not a huge living room, it took about one second, i look back, my sonjumped up, i stare at him, he stares at me, we run towards each other, we hug each other. i hugged him so tight i thought i might fossilise him, i put that on twitter. that is how tight i was
6:50 pm
holding my boy who is also a spurs fan to my chest. then i slumped down on the sofa and put my head in my hands. and i can feel the tears coming. my son is suddenly looking at me, because he has not seen that in me before. he hasn't seen that. and then i managed to get away. i go u psta i rs and then i managed to get away. i go upstairs where my wife is and then i burst into tears. , like, i put my hands over my face like that and i started sobbing. that is what happened. that's years, decades of just not being close to this. like, how does this happen to us? it doesn't happen to spurs! we are the joke. # it's happening again # it's happening again #. # it's happening again #. #. we # it's happening again #. we are used to that. suddenly that happens and we are into a new plane of existence. are you the favourites? hundred percent liverpool.
