there was the option of the finish in the top four and never was to play the final but the ambition that we showed during the whole season brought the club to play in the final and of course to be in the champions league season. i think it's a massive achievement. at the start of the day, arsenal had an outside chance of finishing in the top four but tottenham's result brought an end to any hope they had. arsenal did end the season with a win — beating burnley 3—1 at turf moor. pierre emerick aubameyang scored twice for arsenal — it means he ends the season as the league's joint top scorer — with 22 goals alongside liverpool's sadio mane and mohamed salah. plenty of goals in the day's other games. eight goals in the match between crystal palace and bournemouth. 5—3 to palace there. michy batshuayi with two. newcastle hammered already relegated fulham 4—0. big result for rafa benitez there — speculation over his future as manager continues.

west ham finish in the top 10, with that 4—1 win over watford. and manchester united end the season on a sour note — they lost 2—0 to cardiff at old trafford. cardiff hadn't beaten united in the league since 1960. and this is how the top of the table looks. manchester city clinching the title by a single point. 98 points for them — after their record 14th successive win. liverpool's win over wolves sees them with 97 points. an astonishingly high total for the team finishing second. chelsea's goalless draw with leicester means they end up 3rd. confirmation of man united in 6th. and the relegation spots decided before today. but it's huddersfield, fulham and cardiff who'll be in the championship next season. brighton finishing two points above cardiff. newcastle's win moved them about bournemouth. well, of course, it's also play—off time in the other leagues, and in league one —

charlton have the advantage over doncaster rovers, after the first leg of their semi—final. charlton won 2—1 today, scoring twice in the space of two first—half minutes, through lyle taylor and joe aribo. doncaster did pull a goal back just before full time, but charlton are at home for the second leg on friday. rangers have secured back—to—back home wins over celtic for the first time in seven years. they got the ideal start, with james tavernier scoring from a free kick within two minutes. and midway through the second half, scott arfield made it 2—nil. that was rangers' sixth win in a row and takes them to within six points of their city rivals but with the title already returning to celtic park, this was a real signal of intent ahead of next season. it was also a first defeat in 16 games for celtic in the league. dundee managerjim mcintyre

has left the club, after their relegation from the scottish premiership. it comes a day after dundee ended a run of 10 consecutive defeats with a 1—0 win away to livingston. lewis hamilton has won the spanish grand prix — to re—take the lead in the drivers' championship. starting from second on the grid again, behind his mercedes team mate valteri bottas, hamilton managed to over—take him on the first bend in barcelona and he held on for the next 66 laps to take the full points. it's his third win of the season. bottas finished second, ahead of red bull's max verstappen, with ferrari's sebastien vettel in fourth. i wouldn't say that i was leading on my own, i think i obviously got my good start and then once i got ahead, it was just about having your head down and not looking back. really grateful for this incredible team thatjust continue to push the limits, bring some upgrades here this weekend which have really added to the car's performance and we know

we are creating history day by day and weekend by weekend and i'm incredibly proud to be part of that. but i'm really happy today and i didn't make a single mistake, which is rare. sometimes you look back and see where you made a mistake and you lost a bit of time but i honestly can't recall having a mistake so that is really positive. warrington wolves have beaten wigan warriors in a really tight match, to reach the quarter—finals of rugby league's challenge cup. warrington were leading 18—12 at the break, before zak hardaker went over to level the scores and with it still level at 24—all, man—of—the match stefan ratchford's penalty goal gave warrington the narrowest of victories — 26—24 the final score. they play hull kr next. also hoping for a place in the quarter finals are st helens and huddersfield. st helens, who are top of super league went ahead early on butjoe wardle crossed overfor huddersfield, to make it all square. st helen's though, came back

in the ax100m in yokohama, japan. nethaneel mitchell—bla ke anchored the team, and caught china to secure third place. the british quartet ran a world leading time yesterday, but it was beaten today by the gold medal winners, brazil. gb will be looking to retain their world championship relay title in doha later this year. mumbai indians have won the indian premier league — clinching the competition by a single run against the chennai super kings. it's their fourth ipl title — lasith malinga took the wicket of shardul thakur with final ball. chennai scored 20 runs in 18th over to give them chance of victory.. but it wasn't to be. and somerset will play hampshire in the final of cricket's one day cup. the holders beat lancashire by 4 wickets in southampton, james fuller striking the winning runs for the home side.
