elections at all due to brexit — but then the uk's departure date was pushed back to october. now with voting day fast approaching, our reality check correspondent chris morris talks us through their campaign messages on the key issue of brexit. (vt next) for many voters, it is all about brexit. the hardest to pin down are probably the two main westminster parties. policy and tactical differences on brexit. the tories wa nt to differences on brexit. the tories want to leave with theresa may's deal. the withdrawal agreement and political declaration negotiated with the eu. the only party which can get brexit done, their campaign leaflet says, is the conservative party.
1:40 pm
the only party that can bring the country together again. whether you voted leave or remain. its manifesto highlights labour's plan for a customs union with the eu after brexit and close links with the single market. if it cannot get that or a general election, then labour backs the option of a public vote. but it does not give any detail about how that might work. then there are two parties that want to leave the eu with no deal at all. the brexit party says it will push for brexit on world trade organisation terms. it wants any meps it gets elected to take part in future brexit talks. but at the same time it says, we won't pay the £39 billion in financial settlement that the government has already negotiated with the eu. the manifesto of the uk independence party says brexit should mean a unilateral and unconditional withdrawal from the eu. it argues that theresa may's withdrawal agreement means leaving the eu in name only. which takes us to the parties which are campaigning clearly to remain. all five of them.
1:41 pm
we are going to go in alphabetical order. change uk, whose mps at westminster broke away from the two main parties, what's another referendum and promises to make a positive case for britain in europe. we are stronger, safer and better off in the eu, says the party's charter for remain. much of the green party's manifesto focuses on environmental issues. but it also promises to get the country out of the brexit mess by putting the question back to the people. the greens say they want to mobilise a positive, pro—european movement to when the people's vote for remain. the liberal democrats also want another referendum and argue the prime minister's deal shows how damaging brexit will be. every vote for the lib dems, their manifesto says, is a vote to stop brexit and stay in the eu.
1:42 pm
in wales, plaid cymru says 200,000 welsh jobs rely on fiction this trade with the eu. it, too, wants what it calls a final say referendum, promises to make the case for wales to have its own voice in europe, with a member in its own right. finally, in scotland, the snp points out that the country voted overwhelmingly to remain in the eu. it had been promoting a compromise that involved staying in the single market, but it now wants another brexit referendum which should include the option of remain. there are also, of course, numerous party standing in northern ireland, and all the details can be found on the bbc news website. the labour mpjess phillips has said she feels "sick" after watching a bbc interview with carl benjamin, a ukip candidate who joked about raping her. mr benjamin, who is standing for ukip in the south west in the european elections, tweeted about phillips in 2016 and said "i wouldn't even rape you." let's hear some of carl benjamin's interview with my colleague victoria derbyshire now.

these are direct quotes from people who watched the video or read the comments. honestly, this makes my stomach churn. how does he find this acceptable? comments like this may not seem a lot to a bloke like him, that is from a 31—year—old male survivor, saying it was like a bullet. from a mid—20s female survivor, she thanked me. i respond saying you are misrepresenting what is happening. you are being lied to. this man has watched your video. the way you report the comments as farcical. i will read another one. the lack of empathy from someone seeking public office acidity. rape is not funny. as a survivor, i am angry.
1:44 pm
there are two sides to every question and i am empathising with the other side. comments like this would have prevented me from telling what happened to me, a female survivor aged 28. she says, i probably wouldn't be here without that help. you only care about the survivors that bolster your narrative, not about the ones to talk to me, who are on my side. you pretend they don't exist. you said you have spoken to one person. in one town. i have spoken to other people in other towns. 0n on my south—west tour. all survivors? all sexual assault, yes. rape crisis say this, experiences of rape and sexual violence and abuse are much more common than most people realise, material that normalises, trivialises or attempts to get laughs out of sexual violence can be humiliating and upsetting for survivors.
1:45 pm
so—called rape jokes are notjust insensitive, hurtful and disrespectful, they are damaging. i am aware of the politically correct narrative, but there is another narrative that we can call the non—politically correct one that i support. i think it is more empowering not to be controlled byjokes. why do you think you have had kippers and milkshakes you are radicalising people by lying about me. there is a link between telling lies about someone in the press, you do not seem to have a duty of care, and the things they are trying to do. the relationship between rhetoric and acts of violence? you are not telling jokes. are you? i was telling a joke. it was contextually clearly a joke. this is what you have to de—contextualise it.
1:46 pm
in order to make sense. you sound like a hypocrite. i do not care, it is a joke. when you are the target, you blame newspapers or the media. when you target someone by attaching their name to your rapejoke, that is ok? i am not inciting people. you are inciting people. you are normalising... everyone i have spoken to don't understand any of the things you have said about me. people alleging things about me, i can sit there and explain the context. they say, that is not very important. i am normalising comedy, which is under attack in this country. in a moment we'll have all the business news, but first, the headlines on bbc news. dramatic evidence from a nurse at the inquests into the london bridge attacks. helen kennett tried to save the life of this man —

1:49 pm
judith mckenna, chief executive of asda's owner walmart, has told staff such a listing is being considered. joining us now is christian stadler from warwick business school. firstly your reaction to the latest figures. as the owner walmart has says that easter coming early affected figures, also the tough retail environment has also meant that sales have been a bit disappointing. i think it is not too dramatic. you are right the sales haven't been great but for walmart group, they have been decent. for the mothership. we do see some positive news when you look at web sales. that has been growing. judith mckenna, boss of walmart, says they might be considering a flotation. why do you think a flotation is in the offing now? why does walmart wa nt to the offing now? why does walmart want to get rid of asda so badly?
1:50 pm
their overall strategy, it has to do with, more concentrating on the competition with amazon and as there isa competition with amazon and as there is a distraction. it is not that asda is terrible but they do not help the massively when they grow that side of the business. instead, they have made investments elsewhere, buying smaller companies in the us. that is where they're focuses, a strategic consideration. the uk market, as you say, probably isn't where walmart want to be. a flotation, correct me if i am wrong, ta kes flotation, correct me if i am wrong, takes quite a while and preparation. what does asda have to do so to get to the position where it will make a good flotation idea? you are right, this will take quite a lot of management time. this is a distraction in a highly competitive market where you see aldi and lidl making inroads. that is challenging.
1:51 pm
in order to prepare for an ipo, they have to make sure they get the numbers right and there is growth opportunities in the future. we talk about the tough trading environment, about the tough trading environment, about discount is doing well. asda has always had a reputation of being a low—cost supermarket. why are things not quite going the way they want? before they came into the market, that was right, but there is more low—cost. the main ipo story, they have to get the online sales right. that could be an inspiring story if they do well in that space, to lure investors. we saw the potential merger between asda's rival sainsbury‘s and asda blocked by the competition commission. from your own personal viewpoint, did you agree with that position, did it make sense? it did make sense. they we re make sense? it did make sense. they were just to make sense? it did make sense. they werejust to big make sense? it did make sense. they were just to big when they came

together. not entirely unexpected. we have seen indications earlier in the year already. it is not as if the year already. it is not as if the two companies had been entirely surprised in the later stage that this is happening. thank you. let's take a lok at some other stories. tesla has said it is updating the battery software in some of its models, following two recent incidents where cars caught fire. the electric car—maker said it would soon begin rolling out the software update on model s and model x vehicles. it follows reports that a parked car caught fire in hong kong, following a similar incident in shanghai. thousands of drivers will be automatically hit by £100 fines and penalty points for ignoring warning signs on a new generation of smart motorways — this is according to the times. new powers will allow police to use traffic cameras to penalise motorists who fail to abide by lane closures on almost 300 miles of the network in england. uefa, european football's governing body, has escalated its investigation

they call it the teapot. it's not very big, it's not very fast, but it is, potentially, revolutionary. this is, we are told, the first driverless lorry, let out on a public road. not a very long road, mind you, but we have to start somewhere. history is created with small steps, the first flight of the wright brothers was 300 metres and this stretch of road is 300 metres, so we are taking a leap pushing history forward and it happens in small steps, but it's a giant step for autonomous electric transport. it weighs 26 tonnes when full and there is no cab for the driver. that is estimated to reduce operating costs by 60% compared to a normal diesel lorry in the hope is there is an environmental benefit as well.
1:55 pm
with the growth of transport c02 emissions cannot increase in the same way and we have to find alternative ways of transporting. we are clearly of the opinion that the future of logistics is smart, c02 friendly and this is connected. of course, driverless lorries are not necessarily good news for drivers but for now it will trundle up and down the road, but other routes are planned. this may well be the future of transport and there might not be room for someone behind the wheel. a 1986 rabbit sculpture by american pop artistjeff koons has sold for over $91 million — a record price for work by a living artist. the 104 cm high sculpture is regarded as one of the most celebrated works of 20th—century and its sale price
