good evening. what an incredible few weeks it's been as we near the end of the football season, and we still have the fa cup final coming up on saturday, two european finals before the end of the month with guaranteed english winners and then england taking part in the nations league finals and the women's world cup. it really is a celebration of the sport. but this is also a really stressful time of the season with the futures of thousands of players hanging in the balance. and the impact on those being released by a club can be profound. i'm joined now by bbc broadcaster and film—maker ben zand who has been looking at this issue in the next episode bbc sounds podcast. it's mental health awareness week, and i simply wasn't aware how big an issue this is in football. you have been looking at academy level. any football fans forgets the trials
6:33 pm
and tribulations of trying to make it to the premier league. most people do not make it. it has a profound effect. when people are in academies it becomes their family. this time of the season is when they find out whether or not they will have a contract. for those who do not this is genuinely upsetting. i spoke to somebody in the podcast we told me about that experience. i walked out midway through the conversation. i did not want to hear anything. literally, the manager cold me, he thought i was going to do something like commit suicide because i was so emotional, he had not seen me like that, because i do not seen me like that, because i do not show emotions. seeing me like that, he did not think it would be this bad. they knew it would be bad but they did not know i would take it like that.

that number is we have got from the professional footballers‘ association, 355 players seeking help since january, and they think that will increase. are the numbers rising or do you think there is more support in place and that we are just more aware of these issues because of the times that we live in? yes, that number is more than double that of the entire year of 2016. that is considerable. but that pfa would see that as an example of what they are doing, working, trying to make players more aware of mental health, trying to make them look forward to positive effect. at the same time there are many people who do not feel it is enough. other people who have been released by academies who feel let down. we spoke to a new academy in west london. these are players that used to be at professional academies before. lam before. iam22

before. i am 22 years old. i play at number ten. as soon as you are released, no one wants to know, no one wants to help you. it is difficult in that sense. the uncertainty in football can mess with your mind. not knowing what is next in any academy. they should have a duty of care to anyone in the system. there is no support. the pfa do not do enough for players. when things are going good, you have got that. speaking to you, are you 0k? it is when you are not doing well, people just disappear. we can understand how hard it can be. it is rejection in its purest form. they get kind of thrown out of the academy straightaway. they do need support. thankfully it does seem like they are getting more support now. thank you. it is really worth a listen.

thanks ben — the next epsiode podcast is available to download on bbc sounds. dumped by my football club, this edition is called. england have named their squad for the nations league finals in portugal next month. it‘s been a tricky one to pick because of those four english clubs contesting the europa league and the champions league finals over the next few weeks, the latter game coming just five days before england face the netherlands. ruben loftus—cheek is out, because of his own ankle problem, that gareth southgate says will see him miss the europa final although chelsea haven‘t confirmed that. captain harry kane is in the party even though the tottenham star has been out for a month with a ligament injury. here is the england manager on today‘s squad announcement. he is working towards being fit for the final. we have got to see how that progresses. clearly he is a player we would want to give every

opportunity to. his goal scoring record for us is phenomenally high. and he is captain of the team. we are keeping that door open. we have got to be the best possible decisions with the information that we have. it is constantly moving. i went to bed last night, rueben loftus—cheek was in the squad and playing brilliantly. as i say, huge disappointment, he will miss a major european final and a brilliant opportunity with us. what we have got to do is prepare everybody, ready to play. there is going to be a lot of uncertainty around who is entirely available until the last minute. but we have got a strong squad, a squad with a lot of talent, and we are looking forward to these matches. azerbaijan‘s sports minister has defended the decision to stage the europa league final in its capital baku on the 29th of may. chelsea and arsenal fans will have to travel almost 2,500 miles and uefa has only given each club 6,000

6:44 pm
earlier today. you want to make the world cup squad. you have to push your case. he is world—class. i would expect him to be in their world cup squad. i would expect them to fight for that last place. maybe too fast bowlers, myself and archer bowling together, at either end, that would be exciting for the crowd. hopefully not as exciting for the pakistan batsmen. i hope we can do the business. the competition for places, the only thing i would say, eve ryo ne places, the only thing i would say, everyone has stepped it up. we worked hard in training anyway. you can see everybody is going that extra little half a step or have a yard, just to make sure they are com pletely yard, just to make sure they are completely ready to go when they get a chance. there is now a situation

we are increasingly force, six, ten in andover. 500 possible? is it going to get demoralising for every generation of bowlers to be in that position? it is demoralising already. 500, i believe that is a realistic target for our one—day team. the destructive nature of our batting line—up can certainly do that. that was joe wilson speaking at trent bridge ahead of that game against pakistan tomorrow. that lawn tennis association looks to increase participation in bame communities. and the team getting great britain out onto the ice in the best possible shape.
