country garden. it is often what tennis brings to mind. but the sports brand is not always the most diverse. in britain, our major events are held in affluent areas, wimbledon, kensington, edgbaston, so you would be forgiven for thinking this is still a posh sport. barely a handful of british players of colour have played grand slams in the open era. sport england has previously criticised the lta in the past for failing to open participation to wider groups. they have not done a good enoughjob of making it more relevant, accessible, welcoming and enjoyable to anyone who wants to play. we need to encourage as many tennis centres to open their doors to the community in which they operate. for many from disadvantaged backgrounds in bame communities, getting the opportunity to pick up a racket is not an option.

for the past three years, the lta has been taking the sport to underserved communities across the country, from youth clubs to temples. a lot of the young people think tennis is not a sport for them. they see a gate and think, that is in the place i can go. they think they will get kicked off and they can't play there. i only see it as a positive, a great way to inspire young kids to pick up the game. we want to open our sport to as many people as possible, make it as accessible as possible. this can only help. if this was not here, i would not have played tennis. i got to see other people and i got to make friends with people and i experienced a new sport. you had fun? yes. we won medals as well. the lta became the first sport governing body to commit to address the barriers to tennis for many in the country. it will not happen overnight, but they have taken a long needed
