hello, i'm tulsen tollett and this is sport today, live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: defending champion brooks koepka leads by a stroke after the opening round of the pga championship in new york. meltdown in italy — nick kyrgios throws a chair on to the court, walks off and is then fined and forced to forfeit the 45 ranking points gained during the rome masters. and italy's fausto masnada claims victory on stage 6 of the giro d'italia, while his compatriot valerio conti seized the overall lead. hello and welcome to the programme where we start with the golfing news that defending champion brooks koepka will take a one shot lead into friday's second round of the pga championship in new york.

the world number 3 finished his opening 18 holes of the year's second major on 7 under. he had a blistering start birdying three of his opening five holes while his playing partners, tiger woods and francesco molinari, were much more inconsistent. it is only nine months since the trophy was contested, a consequence of moving the calendar. the 2018 champion brooks koepka served notice he would like to hold onto the title for a full 12 months and beyond. a new course record for the fearsome golfer and equalled the lowest round in pga history. there is a long way to go but brooks koepka has laid down an early marker. there was a

traditional pga supergroup. both of his partners finished behind their playing partner. rory marco rojo, the champion of 2012 and 2014 has much to do if he is two and a five year wait for a fifth major title. for now, the nearest challenger is danny lee. he is bidding to become the first new zealander to win a major sent michael campbell 14 years ago. he has surged into second place on his way to a six under par round. that despite two bogus that kept him off the top of the leaderboard. that was one of the best rounds i have played probably as a professional.

this golf course is brutal. if you're not going to drive it, it impedes the rest of the game. there isa impedes the rest of the game. there is a fine line between five or six over and a couple under. it is a fun golf course to plain, that's for sure. that — to play in. now to tennis where nick kyrgios has been fined $60,000 and lost all his ranking points from the italian 0pen. he was given a game penalty, reportedly for swearing, and trailed norway's casper ruud 2—1 in the final set of their second round match, then throwing a chair on to the court and walking away from the contest before the umpire could disqualify him. the bbc‘s tennis correspondent russell fuller has more. not for the first time in his career nick kyrgios overstepped the mark. he was plain casper ruud. the crowds that are magnificent. they get a very, very energised themselves and

quite a lot to and fro between nick kyrgios and the crowd. his reaction to being docked again, as you can see here, he decides to throw his racquet to the throw, kicked it, and then a plastic chair gets hurled into the centre of the court. it was at that point that nick kyrgios was not going to continue and before the umpire had a chance to disqualify him, walked off the court. i know everybody thinks, for goodness sake, pull yourself together. you are blessed with this talent, use it properly and do not waste your career. i am properly and do not waste your career. iam not properly and do not waste your career. i am not defending properly and do not waste your career. iam not defending his behaviour but, as he says himself, and he uses this as a defence mechanism, he says he knows he needs to work harder on his conditioning and in pre—season and play less basketball. he knows he should get a

be lucky sometimes. i have lost a lot of heartbreak as to, throughout the years. it is nice to win this. the atmosphere was fantastic. people we re the atmosphere was fantastic. people were going crazy. it is exactly the atmosphere you want. it was good. federer‘s on course for a semi—final showdown with the reigning champion rafael nadal who was in imperious form on thursday. he won both his matches in straight sets, and only lost two games in the process. after beginning the defence of his title with a 6—0 6—1win overjeremy chardy, nadal followed that up with a 6—1, 6—love victory over nikoloz basilashvili, and he'll play fellow—spaniard fernando verdasco next. and the world number one novak djokovic was also in impressive form in his two matches on thursday, losing just seven games along the way. he followed up a straight sets win over denis shapovalov by thrashing philipp kohlschreiber 6—3, 6—0. djokovic plastuan martin del potro in the quarter—finals. in the women's singles, there was a shock defeat for the number 3 seed, simona halep.

she was beaten in three sets by marketa vondrousova of the czech republic in her second round match, and that defeat for halep ends her hopes of regaining the world number one spot next week. halep‘s defeat means naomi 0saka is certain to remain world number one when the new rankings are published on monday. she's through to the quarter—finals in rome for the first time after back—to—back straight sets wins on thursday. after beating dominika cibulkova 6—3, 6—3 in the morning, she beat romania's mihaela buzarnescu by the same score later in the day, to seal her place in the last eight where she faces the number 6 seed kiki bertens. if 0saka reaches the final she won't be playing petra kvitova. the number two seed was forced to retire with a calf injury during her 3rd round match with maria sakkari. kvitova looked to be struggling as she won the 2nd set to level the match, and was trailing 4—0 in the decider when she finally called it a day. and great britain'sjohanna konta is also through to the last eight. after an impressive victory over

sloane stephens in the morning, where she came from a set down to knock out the number 7 seed, konta then beat the former champion venus williams in the afternoon to seal her place in the quarter—finals. she won 6—2, 6—4. now to cycling where italy's fausto masnada claimed his first victory in a grand tour by winning stage 6 of the giro d'italia on thursday, while his compatriot valerio conti seized the overall lead. slovenia's primoz roglic who had held the lead since the end of stage one was involved in a fall, which meant receiving treatment on the move, while the two—man breakaway came from masnada and conti which they held for nearly 30 kilometres. conti then allowed masnada to grab the stage win without contesting the sprint, knowing he would take over the leader's pinkjersey. now to football and it's understoood real madrid have signed serbia striker luka jovic from eintracht frankfurt for a fee of around $67 million. the 21 year—old scored 10 goals for the german side

in their run to the europa league semi—finals where they were knocked out by chelsea on penalties and has netted 17 times in the bundesliga. 33—year—old marta has been named in brazil's squad for next month's women's football world cup as her nation looks to to end a nine—match losing streak. the six—time world player of the year will be joined in france by 41—year—old midfielder formiga who'll be playing in a record seventh world cup despite announcing her retirement in 2016 after the rio olympic games. brazil is in group c with italy, australia and jamaica. translation: marta is still marta. no matter how hard it does not prevent us from making an impact on the world cup. everybody says that messy the world cup. everybody says that m essy pla ce the world cup. everybody says that messy place better at barcelona than argentina. barcelona have played together for the last 15 years with the same players. it is a different

1:56 am
will bring with it a few spots of showery rain. we've still got some spells of sunshine on offer, but as we head through the day on friday, what we're going to see is this week frontal system moving its way in on this easterly breeze, so that will bring some cloud and outbreaks of rain too. now, during friday morning, the areas most likely to see the rain are across central and southern england, through wales as well. further north, perhaps the odd shower across parts of scotland but there will be plenty of sunshine once again in the bulk of scotland. more cloud working in across eastern parts of england during the day on that easterly breeze with one or two spots of rain. i think northern ireland should stay mostly dry, with a bit of sunshine. temperatures still 17 to 19 across northern ireland and scotland, but england and wales, you're more typically 13 to 16, so cooler than it has been. so as we move through friday evening and overnight into saturday, we'll see more persistent, heavier rain working in from the east, particularly affecting scotland and northern england too. so quite a murky start to saturday here with that drizzly rain and low cloud too. further south, we're going to see some brightness to start
1:57 am
off your weekend. but in general, the weekend is looking slightly cloudier and cooler than we've seen through this week. there will be some showers but it won't be a washout, a bit of sunshine on offer through the weekend too. so let's look at some detail then for saturday. what have we got? we've got low pressure sitting across central parts of europe, the winds rotating around that area of low pressure bringing us quite a bit of cloud off the north sea and some outbreaks of rain. the rain affecting quite a bit of of northern england and scotland through saturday morning. a few of those showers will push into northern ireland through the day. i think the southern half of england and much of wales should see some sunny spells through the morning, but a chance of showers breaking out almost anywhere during the afternoon. now, temperatures around about 14 to 18 degrees — cooler than it has been — but there should be some brighter spells in the south. it will still feel quite pleasant. moving on into the second half of the weekend, and there's not much change in the pressure set—up so not much change in the weather. sunday, another fairly cloudy day, particularly in the north. there could be some sunshine in southern and eastern england in particular, but again, there'll be some showers.
1:58 am
they'll be heaviest and most frequent in scotland, where we could have the odd rumble of thunder. a few showers further south too, but warming up a touch compared to saturday, so highs of around 13 to 19 degrees. bye for now.
