tv   Emiliano Sala  BBC News  June 1, 2019 1:30pm-2:01pm BST

1:30 pm
in madrid, fans gear up for this evening's all—english champions league final — liverpool versus tottenham. good news for tenants in england as a ban on letting fees — including credit checks and viewings — comes into effect. now on bbc news, the tragic death of emiliano sala in a plane crash touched thousands of people across the world. bbc wales investigates examines the circumstances of the crash. news archives: an air and sea search has been launched for a missing light aircraft which is thought to have been travelling to cardiff... what i can tell you is that cardiff are seeking clarification and they are genuinely concerned... the aviation authority has confirmed that the premier league footballer,

emiliano sala, who hasjust signed for cardiff city, was on a light aircraft which disappeared... the chief executive, ken choo, says the club are very distressed about the new signing, emiliano sala, who was on board a plane... ..cardiff city footballer, emiliano sala, who has been missing since the flight he was on disappeared last night, has been suspended... the first thing was to gather all praying to find him, to find him alive.
1:32 pm
one monday night injanuary, emiliano sala was being flown from france, having just been unveiled as cardiff city's new striker. the football club had agreed to buy him in the hope that he could rescue their season. city were languishing near the bottom of the premier league and were prepared to break their own transfer record to sign the proven goal—scorer. but that wasn't to be. sala was killed when the plane crashed in the english channel. this tragedy has shone a light
1:33 pm
into the darker recesses of the football industry. the murky world of transfers, the legal complexities of players contracts, and a reminder of the potential dangers of flying in light aircraft. emiliano sala is now recognised the world over. but what do we really know about the man behind the headlines? how did a teenager from argentina hold ambitions of playing in the premier league for cardiff city? this is progreso, a small rural town about 350 miles north of buenos aires.
1:34 pm
and this is where emiliano sala grew up with his mum, dad and two siblings. it is also where he learnt to play football. he fell in love with the game, playing it at almost every opportunity. he joined the local club and dreamt of one day becoming a professional footballer. emiliano's mother, mercedes, is immensely proud of her son's achievements. she agreed to talk to me about his childhood and ambitions growing up in argentina.
1:35 pm
his best friend at school in progreso was martin molteni. atjust 15, emiliano was signed by an academy club in argentina, 100 miles away, and he moved out
1:36 pm
of the family home. his new club, san francisco, had links to the french ligue one side bordeaux and, aged just 20, emiliano moved to the european club. sala played for nantes for more than four years, before he attracted the attention of cardiff city towards the end of last year.
1:37 pm
he was clearly a talent. but it appears there were also attempts to inflate the price that cardiff city would have to pay nantes. this e—mail was sent to sala by the former football agent, willie mckay. in it mckay says, "it was us who to put it in the media about other clubs wanting you, west ham, everton etc, to create an interest in you, that's what we do." because of this, we understand that cardiff city had serious reservations about the transfer, as they felt sala's value had been grossly inflated. the nantes side of the deal was done by father and son, willie and mark mckay. there was no other club interested. the actual offer came out of me, in fact. first offer was 18 million sterling, and 5 million as a bonus if they stayed up.
1:38 pm
and then they chipped away and chipped away. it's what everybody does. it happens all the time in every deal. but cardiff did make an offer, of £15 million, which was accepted. on friday, january 18, sala was flown to cardiff for a medical. on the saturday, he was unveiled by cardiff as their new record—signing at the city stadium. after signing, sala wanted to return to nantes to say his goodbyes. cardiff city said they offered sala a commercial flight back to cardiff but a private plane was hired for him by willie mckay, although he says he was not involved in selecting the plane or the pilot.
1:39 pm
it is understood that the private flight taking emiliano sala back to cardiff from here in nantes was due to leave at 9 o'clock on the monday morning. but the plane, seen here in nantes, didn't take off until 7:15pm that night. it was flown by david ibbotson. he had stepped in to fly the two legs of the journey after the original pilot couldn't make it. five minutes into the flight, sala sent an audio message to friends. he expressed concern but didn't sound alarmed.
1:40 pm
news archive: cardiff city football club says it's investigating reports that emiliano sala was one of two people a plane which went missing near the channel islands last night. the news was met with shock by emiliano's father horatio.
1:41 pm
news archive: a search is under way for the light aircraft which disappeared from radar on its way to cardiff. the striker signed for the premier league club on saturday for £15 million... we now know, from initialfindings of the accident report, that flight conditions, including the weather, were farfrom ideal.
1:42 pm
i have to say there are a number of things of concern, one is it is a single engine flight over a long stretch of water, in winter, at night, in icing conditions with the strong likelihood of entering cloud. and there was a cold front coming through. alistair rosenschein is an experienced pilot, with 15,000 hours of flying time. one of the hardest decisions a pilot takes is making the decision not to go. and that was obviously the decision he should have made. if he was under pressure, and no pilot should ever be under pressure to fly without question, i think most pilots would not have done that flight.
1:43 pm
three days after the crash, the official search was called off. sala's sister, romina, visited the shrine to her missing brother outside the cardiff city stadium. away at arsenal... ..and in their home match against bournemouth, cardiff city players, staff and fans all paid tribute to the missing 28—year—old striker. as the football club tried to get back to normality, more concerns began to emerge about the flight that sala was travelling on to cardiff from nantes. in a haunting message to friends, he had already expressed his own fears about the plane. now, serious questions are being asked about
1:44 pm
the suitability of the aircraft, and indeed the pilot, to make the journey at night, over the english channel. pilot david ibbotson was not qualified to fly at night. he is thought to have been colour blind, and he did not have a night rating on his uk private pilot's licence. his proposed flight plan was under a term called visual flight rules. he needed to see where he was going. he was an experienced pilot, but not apparently on instruments, and i don't believe he had an instrument rating. the speed at which a pilot can become disorientated, if he is not instrument flying, is very, very quick indeed. sala's family and friends raised enough money through online donations to be able to fund a new search for the missing plane. within hours of that search
1:45 pm
starting, wreckage was found. a body was later recovered, and identified as that of emiliano sala. the pilot is still missing, presumed dead. no sooner had emiliano sala's body been recovered, the recriminations began. nantes demanded that cardiff city
1:46 pm
should pay them a first instalment of £5 million for the sale of sala. but cardiff responded, saying they were withholding any payments until they were satisfied that all documentation relating to the transfer was in order. in france, the feeling is that the deal was done, and sala's move from nantes to cardiff had gone through. we could consider that cardiff city lost at the beginning of this tragic story, the battle of image and perception. this sports journalist has written extensively about sala's story. which club bears the burden of the £15 million transfer fee has yet to be decided, but in argentina, there is little doubt.
1:47 pm
which club bears the burden of the £15 million transfer fee has yet to be decided, but in argentina, there is little doubt. almost everyone here in progreso believes that at the time of his death, emiliano sala was a cardiff city player. they saw pictures of him signing his contract. they saw the cardiff city manager neil warnock, at this very ground, describe sala as "my player."
1:48 pm
cardiff city insist they have tried unsuccessfully to talk to nantes. in february, emiliano's body was returned to his home town of progreso in argentina. we came together, we sing, we give an applause to him. and it was a very important moment for the village. i think that he can stay with us these days in another way.
1:49 pm
among the mourners were cardiff city's neil warnock and ken chu. family are so important, and i think everything here today has shown how important it is. his family, his mum and dad and sister, they have been so emotionally involved with the whole village, not just the family. it seems like the whole village has got together.
1:50 pm
fittingly, the club where emiliano played as a young boy hosted his funeral service. they have already taken steps to remember him. the san martin football club here in progreso now plays in this shirt designed to honour the role
1:51 pm
that emiliano sala played in the club. it has his image on the shirt, as well as spaces for the shields and crests of all the clubs he played for. the last one is for cardiff city. a club, of course, which now argues that he never was actually their player at all. the club's president is daniel ribeiro. sala's already left his mark here. previous signing on fees have helped pay for work at the club's sports centre, and they say they are owed more money from the nantes—cardiff deal. the club insist it is cardiff who owe them 170,000 euros.
1:52 pm
there is a fifa investigation into sala's transfer, but it is unclear how long it will take. nantes declined to appear in this programme, but said they had fully supported emiliano sala throughout his career with them. cardiff city also declined our invitation. but in a statement, the club said its position was clear. the contract was not complete, and legally, there were no grey areas. cardiff city also said that several other terms and conditions of the contract were not satisfied.
1:53 pm
we believe these relate specifically to bonuses and other payments due to the player. the full investigation into the plane crash is also continuing, although this interim report was published at the end of february. this is the original flight plan, a pretty straight line between nantes and cardiff. he is avoiding weather here. which mean that he is... to maintain visual flight conditions. initially, it looks like there is an attempt to fly on instruments. and then, presumably, entering cloud, decided to do a iso—degree turn to effectively abort this flight, and at that point, the aircraft clearly loses control. there is a very, very steep series of descents and climbs, and then it impact with the water. cardiff city's season has been tough for many reasons.
1:54 pm
earlier this month, they were relegated from the premier league. but probably the defining moment for the football club was the tragic death of emiliano sala. and the impact of sala's death is felt nowhere more acutely than in his hometown of progreso in argentina. martin feels that his friend was let down, and someone needs to be held accountable.
1:55 pm
emiliano's father horacio died suddenly two weeks after filming. as well as photographs to remember her son by, she also has his dog nala,
1:56 pm
who she brought over from france hello. it's one of those frustrating weather days. heat and sunshine is clearly not the story across the uk. it is expected to be across southeast england and east anglia.

1:59 pm
slow moving heavy downpours possible on tuesday, still some spots in the low 20s but most places in the teens, temperatures a bit below average in some spots as we go through the week ahead. that's the latest forecast.
