9:31 pm
missouri is one of nine states to pass so—called heartbeat abortion bans. at ten o'clock, lukwesa burak will be here with a full round up of the days news. first on bbc news, it's time for our world — which this week is in kenya to uncover the elusive figures known as "night runners". every night, villages across rural kenya are terrorised by what people think are demonic spirits. banging. these unseen entities don't attack or steal from their victims. their only goal appears to be scaring people. for the first time, using hidden cameras,
9:32 pm
we have captured footage of one of kenya's most secretive aberrations, the night runner. for centuries, these elusive people have been carrying out night—time raids, tormenting their neighbours. banging and rattling. across kenya it is believed thousands of people night run. who are these people, and what lies at the heart of this bizarre and ancient tradition?
9:33 pm
i am an investigative reporter based in nairobi. and like most children in kenya, was brought up on the folklores of night running. for my people, the luo, night running is one of the greatest myths. but unlike other folklore, this one actually exists. i have acquired video footage that is, to the best of my knowledge, the only recorded evidence of night running. but are these people really possessed by demonic powers? that's what i am here to find out. it is a question many luo seem unable or are afraid to answer. maybe margaret, the elderly grandmother whose regular ordeal we filmed last night, can shed some light on why they do what they do.
9:34 pm
do you have any suspicions of who the current night runner is? superstition and fear surround the night runners and their identity. a problem the local area chief is constantly battling with as he deals with the fallout from these nocturnal attacks. how many reports of night running do you get? i received several reports of night running cases, but it is difficult to prosecute them. they don't want to confront the night runners. why? cultural beliefs, some say if you mention a night runner openly then maybe your kin will also become

night runners. abel wants me to meet a woman who has been plagued constantly by night runners. but these ones are doing more than throwing stones. what i have noticed, there is a tendency of mostly widows who don't have a man in the house at night, are the ones who are targets. those are the reported cases? according to my personal observation, yes. i have been trying to track down a night runner to talk to, but finding people who will even admit to knowing one is proving very difficult.
9:36 pm
but then i get a tipoff that directs me to a couple with two small children living on the edge of the village. this is husband—and—wife sam otieno and grace awino. they are both subsistence farmers, and they are also both night runners, and have agreed to talk to me. i feel very happy. yeah. sam told me his desire to go running was passed onto him by his father, who had used a magic spell.
9:37 pm
9:38 pm
what if they open the door and come out? as darkness falls, grace starts to feel the urge to run. she allows our camera to follow as she goes out on her nocturnal run. it's now pitch black, so we switch to infrared and grace is off. every few nights, sam and grace prowl the village, targeting homes and scaring villagers. rattling and banging. grunting.
9:39 pm
9:40 pm
9:41 pm
what did they do to you the second time? so you still owe them? yeah. people get hurt when they get caught. do you think it is worth it? yeah, it is worth it. it is worth it. yeah. and there is nothing which can make you stop? even death. for me now, night running seems to be a thrillseeking activity. many of those who engage in this practice seemed to be addicted to the adrenaline of scaring people.

night falls and she begins to feel the urge to run. after some time she comes to her target. she rubs her stick along the roof, a ritualistic warning to her victims before she sprays their house. she squats down, bottle in hand to fill it. thenjust as she is making ready, a man emerges from the house, swinging a machete. she bolts and escapes, but it feels like a close shave.
9:47 pm
9:48 pm
you feel about night running? are you afraid? yeah, i'm afraid. grace's nighttime activities have finally caught up with her and she is in serious trouble with her neighbours. if the situation gets worse, her whole family could be driven from the home. she does not want to report the case to police, but i can help her get treatment for her leg. we take her to the nearest town for an appointment with the local medic.
9:49 pm
9:51 pm
but the following morning i received a panicked phone call from grace. because she failed to pay him for his silence, the villager who attacked her two nights ago has now outed her to the entire community as a night runner. her family has been expelled from their home. only one option remains, grace's village believes a traditional healers medicine may remove the night runner curse. maybe if she appears to be cured by a herbalist, the community will allow her family to return.
9:52 pm
9:53 pm
grace's only hope now is that her community believes that the traditional healers spell has been successful and her night running days are behind her. many of the current generation want to quit because it has become increasingly dangerous to be a night runner. not long after i finished filming i learnt that sam and grace had separated. grace is no longer night running, but she still has the urge.

hello. the uk recorded its highest temperature of the year so far on saturday, but the heat hasn't been evenly distributed across the uk. it was there for east anglia into south east england, and for some it will still be there during sunday but this was the scene for a time in north wales on saturday. many of us had a cloud, temperature is nowhere near the upper 20s, even a bit of rain around as well because he been close to this area of low pressure, which during sunday's feeding this cold front eastward, behind it there is cool air following in behind,
9:55 pm
with a chance of seeing some showers. plenty of those across the north and west of the uk the start off on sunday, a cold front here taking the showers further east and heavier downpours in place. though it will weaken, i think there is a move towards the east in most parts of england later on in the day. still ahead of that cold front, temperatures reaching into the upper 20s for some, most of us it feels cooler, a bit fresher, blustery with sunny spells and if you heavy showers behind. the winds strengthen a bit further through on sunday night, close of this area of low pressure towards the northwest of the uk in particular. going into monday, notice it nestles just to the north of scotland, so the uk is under the influence of low pressure come around that we have the cool air coming again, colours indicating the air is not cold, but you can see where the hottest weather has moved on well to the east of us at this stage. where we have seen temperatures into the upper 20s we closer to 20 degrees on monday, with a fair amount of sunshine around, some cloud building, a few showers breaking out, more towards the north and west of the uk, could merge for some longer spells of running into western scotland.
9:56 pm
still quite a breezy day to come. most of us with temperatures just into the mid—to upper teens. to go from monday to tuesday, the area of low pressure still to the north of scotland, a disturbance moving in towards the southwest, low pressure is in control, the air is unstable, and notice as we go deeper into tuesday, greater chance of seeing some heavy downpours breaking out, some of them could well be thundery and the winds are light, slow—moving. it will turn out to be quite wet in places but as everyone showers, it will all be very patchy in nature, some places will escape with nothing, others mayjust get the heavy downpours. as we go from tuesday into wednesday, no big disturbance close by. it looks like it will be a little bit quieter on wednesday. fewer showers around, still some, more places staying dry with the sunshine, the winds are light. an area of low pressure potentially feeding some heavy downpours southeast england and east anglia, deeper into the day. we will keep an eye on that. now, some gardeners will be looking
9:57 pm
at that saying bring it on. we want some rain. it has been so dry. there is that potential towards the end of the week to see this area of low pressure come close by and bring some ran across parts of the uk but there is a lot to play for in the positioning of this and therefore where we will see the wetter weather but again, if you look at the picture for thursday, there is that potential than of some heavy downpours and places and if anything towards the end of the week, it looks a little bit cooler. so why is it so unsettled? why is it rather cool at times in the week ahead? look at the jet stream dipping well to the south of the uk. we are to the north, which means we are on the cooler side of the end that is why temperatures are just close to average if not a bit below in places. low pressure close by, that is why it is so unsettled. even into next weekend, the area of low pressure may have a go at us but are indications, high—pressure to the west of us, that could start to take over in the following week and settle things down. we will keep an eye on that.
