if‘ai‘it has it"ui‘ii it"uiéi urll like to think that the next generation of women will emerge with a different culture. perhaps, they are out there. ruth davidson, for example. but women in power today are still struggling. i felt that margaret thatcher wasn't being treated fairly, all being portrayed ina way treated fairly, all being portrayed in a way that she should have been portrayed. for all her faults, in a way that she should have been portrayed. forall herfaults, she has been characterised as misogynistic,. thank you both for joining us. the headlines. the woman who killed her husband after decades of emotional buzz walks free from court after having her murder conviction reduced to manslaughter —— andi conviction reduced to manslaughter —— and i got emotional abuse walks free. theresa may officially resigns as conservative leader in a letter to the 1922 comittee —

cinema releases is mark kermode. so mark, what do we have this week? it's been an interesting week. we have late night starring emma thompson as a chat show host. the new x—men movie, dark phoenix, and gloria bell. a remake of gloria. you're very gravelly today.|j gloria bell. a remake of gloria. you're very gravelly today. i know. let's start with late night, shall we. this is a writer that people might know. yes, it stars emma thompson as a chat show host, she's been there for ages, a proper host, smart, intelligent, propersmart italian gusts. but her ratings are ina slump. italian gusts. but her ratings are in a slump. and she decides that the problem is that she has a writers room who are not doing theirjob. more to the point, they are all

white males, and she doesn't know any of them. here's a clip. if i may, ijust any of them. here's a clip. if i may, i just want any of them. here's a clip. if i may, ijust want to say, it is such an honour to meet you. my name is eugene. when my parents got divorced... i don't know who any of you are. well, i'm tom. i write the monologue. i'm the youngest monologue. i'm the youngest monologue right in the history of the channel. i'm not going to remember any of this. this is what we are going to do. you are one, two, three, four,... hi, how's your baby? she is 27. her baby is doing well. never mind. idon't baby? she is 27. her baby is doing well. never mind. i don't know why i asked, six, seven. i'll be allowed to call each other by our own names? just remember the numbers. can i

switch, it'sjust that i'm the most senior writer. 0k, can we salvage anything from the taping.|j senior writer. 0k, can we salvage anything from the taping. i love it already. i love how emma thompson does that oh, i don't care. she says i have to have women writers and men detailing plays someone who applies and has no qualifications. they have to make this, she is referred to as a diversity higher but she starts turning the programme around. catherine starts talking about subjects that interest her. it becomes more political and more edgy. fortune star to change. i think, very much like book smart. which is really funny, and bridesmaids, what this has done is demonstrated that we have actually won half of mainstream television for quite a long time. it has shaken
5:50 pm
up for quite a long time. it has shaken up the gender balance. for a long time people thought that women need comedies wouldn't work. and here it works terrifically well. emma thompson is terrific, the problem, to some extent is that in the third act the comedy narrows down a little bit and becomes more dramatic. it's a blend of drama and comedy. i kind of wa nted a blend of drama and comedy. i kind of wanted a bit more broadcast near its needs third rock. you lined up which something which is closer to the devil wears prada meets... but that said it is consistently funny. it's not as tough as i wanted to be but is consistently funny and the performances are good. it's worth watching for those scenes in which emma thompson turns the right apart. it's making a serious point at the same time. very serious point. the world has changed. when bridesmaids came out everyone was saying it can't possibly with things like the
5:51 pm
hangover, and it did. my only reservation is i wanted to be slightly harsh about the media. i wa nted slightly harsh about the media. i wanted my own prejudices to come into play. next we have x-men, how many more x—men films do we need? this is an end of sorts. it is about how dark phoenix comes to be after a solo play which gives her hidden powers, and unlocks trauma. she is a divided soul, she and or is she dangerous? the film starts with a car crash, and dangerous? the film starts with a carcrash, andi dangerous? the film starts with a car crash, and i have to say that narratively an awful lot of the fun continues in that way. it very incoherent in terms of plot. the dialogue isn't great. there are lots of those smash crash, set pieces in which you have umpteen different superheroes. laser that acts like a heat that! it does look very bark
5:52 pm
sticky. there are good things about it. i think it is a really good job. jessica chastain is excitingly strange as the nemesis who is searching for the dark power. and james mcavoy is always good. but it's very scrappy. itjust rely heavily on special effects. in an age in which we have character studies that just age in which we have character studies thatjust happen to have superheroes, i wanted studies thatjust happen to have superheroes, iwanted much, much more from this. you've not sold it to me, you were more from this. you've not sold it to me, you were never more from this. you've not sold it to me, you were never going to. no, you won't and x—men fan, but even if you won't and x—men fan, but even if you where you would struggle. now, gloria bell. the director has made this film in spanish? yes, in coils gloria made in 2015 in spanish. this is now a remake starring julianne moore. he says if you've seen the original version there is an awful lot that you will recognise, because it has been pretty much moved wholesale from
5:53 pm
santiago to america. julianne moore is gloria bell, a divorcee looking for love in single bars where she meets arnold, who is himself a divorcee, although he has commitment issues which we see very clearly when she introduces him to her family. and he walks out because he just can't face it. here's a clip. what are you doing here? can we talk? i don't have anything to say to you. i really need you to listen to you. i really need you to listen to me. i do. to you. i really need you to listen to me. ido. how to you. i really need you to listen to me. i do. how could you be so rude? i was introducing you to my family. i thought you to my son's birthday party and you had the nerve... you would have done the same thing. it wasn't an easy situation. i searched your eyes, again and again. i didn't exist. we
5:54 pm
we re again and again. i didn't exist. we were in love. how many times you have to say that. it made me sick. i threw up. i don't know how you could do something like that to me. grow a pair. well, i know where my sympathies lie. i have been watching your reactions. i think that the lead actor plays a very good part. he is very needy and from the very beginning she wants to like him. she is terrific, she does a smile that looks like a smile on a brave face, a kind of scream happening behind the smile. and she is a very physical performer. she goes to these clubs where she dances, because she always enjoyed dancing
5:55 pm
and dances in and out of date way, which is the most complicated thing to do. find me the last time so many big budget movie did that. my only reservation here is you've seen gloria you have seen this before. the best out rocket man? have you seen the best out rocket man? have you seen it yet? i want to see it more than i wanted queen. this doctorate not bohemian rhapsody. this is a proper musical. it's based on true fa ntasy. proper musical. it's based on true fantasy. it's a musical, the kind of thing that can vessel would play. it's really well done. karen egerton is fantastic. and whether you are an
5:56 pm
eltonjohn is fantastic. and whether you are an elton john fan or is fantastic. and whether you are an eltonjohn fan or not, i mean i am, i grew eltonjohn fan or not, i mean i am, igrew up eltonjohn fan or not, i mean i am, i grew up with him. but i couldn't believe how much i enjoyed this. i sat there beaming through the whole thing. i think you'd love it. i think you'd love it because it's such a vibrant, fantastic cinema experience. and it's not sanitised? no, it's not. bohemian rhapsody is a bit sanitised, this isn't, it's for long. the full sex and drugs life, and then some. sold to me just on that. and on dvd, a private ball? yes, this is a narrative drama about marie colvin, the war reporter. the film itself has some flaws. he says it is not a biopic, it's a portrait. but it's got a brilliant central performance by rosamund pike who gives it 110%. it's one of those films in which that central performance will see you through,
5:57 pm
perhaps, the simplifications of the film itself. it's an important subject, and she really carries it. she really, really does. the thing with marie colvin though, a lot of people will know the story, the truth of it. not least because we've seen truth of it. not least because we've seen it done in documentaries which is why there is the question of his dramatisation necessarily the way to go. i think thejury is dramatisation necessarily the way to go. i think the jury is still out on that. if you are going to see it it has to have a central character who is charismatic and electrifying, and can hold you, and i think rosamund pike does that. she generally looks not like rosamund pike. it's all to do with the stance and physicality of the performers. you got through it, your voice survived, now you need to go and rested. is that a nice way of saying, stop talking. yes! thank you very much. that's it for this week, thanks for watching and goodbye.
