hello and welcome to sportsday, i'm hugh woozencroft. a serious crash ruins chris froome‘s dreams of a record equalling fifth tour de france title. "ourfirst choice" — the british and irish lions confirm warren gatland as head coach for a third time. we'll hear from andy murray who is growing more and more confident of a return to singles tennis at the end of the year. when you have been in painfora of the year. when you have been in pain for a long time it is hard to remember what it was like before hand. nowi remember what it was like before hand. now i am pain—free again, i can do things of the tennis court. also coming up, the cricket world cup is back after the rain and australia beat pakistan. and why did the chicken go to training? we'll take you inside the camp,
6:31 pm
as scotland prepare for their second match at the women's world cup. we start with some terrible news for the four—time tour de france winner, chris froome, who is hospital chris froome, who is ——in hospital with a suspected broken leg. the team ineos rider hit a wall during practice for the fourth stage of the criterium de dauphine in france. this is what his team principal sir dave brailsford said in the aftermath. he has had a bad crash. the foot of the descent is very gusty today. it sounds like he has taken his hand off the handlebars to blow his nose and he has hit a wall at 60 miles an
6:32 pm
hour. he has got a bad fracture. he is badly injured. it sounds like he has got a fractured femur. that is to be confirmed because he is not in hospital yet. he will be airlifted shortly to hospital. luckily there was an ambulance, one of the race ambulance as very close to where he had the accident. they were able to ta ke had the accident. they were able to take care of him pretty quickly which is pretty fortunate. like i say, they're just going to transfer now to hospital. froome won't be at the start of the tour de france. 0ur sports correspondence is here to tell us more. whatever team in the oft said? they say chris froome has sustained what they say multiple serious injuries including a fractured right femur, fractured a
6:33 pm
bone —— elbow and fractured ribs. he is now in hospitalforfurther treatment. there is a statement from sir david brailsford who we heard from there. he says that the primary focus is ensuring chris gets the best possible care. even though we all recognise the risks in our sports it's always traumatic when a rider crashes and sustained injuries. chris had worked incredibly hard to get on track for the tour and was in fantastic shape. 0ne the tour and was in fantastic shape. one of the things that sets chris apart this is mental strength and resilience and we will support him totally in his recovery. needless to say the whole sporting world will be wishing him all the best of that recovery. thank you very much for that update. let's speak to former olympic champion, to try
6:34 pm
and put this into context. obviously the femur is the biggest bonein obviously the femur is the biggest bone in your legs are not a good one to break. it all depends on how it is broken. if it is displaced or distracted. i sounds pretty serious. you are looking at a good few weeks. —— displaced or just you are looking at a good few weeks. —— displaced orjust fractured. probably the end of the season for chris froome unfortunately. what does this mean for a man who is 3a and who has been bruised of late? is this the end of his tour winning potential? no, definitely not. knowing chris and hearing what dave has said, he is so resilient and mentally strong. that is his strength. if anyone could come back from such a horrific injuryi could come back from such a horrific injury i think he can. how will team
6:35 pm
ineos come back now? how do things change in terms of the build—up? you would have done all of your practice with chris as the main rider. the things changed massively for them now? i personally don't think chris would have been their main rider. guaranty thomas won last year so i think they would have been joint leaders. —— geraint thomas. they have lost one rider and they will have lost one rider and they will have to bring one in. now it will be all for geraint thomas, i'm sure. do you think he can go ahead and win once again? will we be favourite this time around? for sure. i have seen geraint thomas recently and he would definitely be up for it. he looks in great shape. it is such a blow for the team though to have lost chris. for his personality as well as the rider. he brought so much to the team. i'm sure they'll still be victorious. i'm definitely
6:36 pm
backing them all the way. you've had injuries in your career, serious ones as well, mentally how do you deal with them? it will be a long time of recovery. what is a time like a rider? for sure. i'm sure chris is absolutely devastated at the moment. it is really hard to put things into perspective. i try to look at the fact it could have been worse, even with a bad injury like that. hopefully for chris he can reset and for me what helped was having small goals along the way and i think that is the only way to go forward after an injury like this. keep all the best people around you, friends, family, the team, he is in the best hands and will have the best support going forward. focus on what he can do and small goals to hits to get him back on the bike. former olympic champion dani rowe thank you very much forjoining us in sportsday.

the british and irish lions have named their head coach for the tour of south africa in 2021, and it's a very familiar face indeed, as warren gatland has accepted the challenge for the third time. he will step down as wales head coach after this year's world cup, and pick up the reins with the lions from next summer. our rugby union correspondent, chris jones, has more. they are the grand slam champions! where is's grand slam triumph earlier this year was the latest feather in warren gatland's cap. the lions have made their move once more tying him down yet again after the winning tour of australia in 2013 and a remarkable series draw against the all blacks four years later. the tour of new zealand took its toll but time has been a healer. he says the lionsjob is one you just but time has been a healer. he says the lions job is one you just don't turn down. when i thought about it and thought about the lions and what it meant to me personally, it was ha rd to it meant to me personally, it was hard to say no. it would have been
6:38 pm
something i would have regretted for the rest of my life. the approach came and! the rest of my life. the approach came and i thought about it and i thought this is something to lead three lions tours and try and go undefeated as a head coach in a test series. i could not walk away from that. gatland becomes the second man in history to take charge of three lions tours. being appointed two yea rs lions tours. being appointed two years in advance gives him time to be involved in the planning. for now, his focus will be on the world cup with wales before committing to the lions in august twenty20. i will be looking at a few things and what ican do be looking at a few things and what i can do and the start of my role in august twenty20 and then focus 100% on the lions and hopefully have an opportunity to go back to new zealand and pick ourselves up and ta ke zealand and pick ourselves up and take it from there. gatland has categorically confirmed he will not
6:39 pm
be coaching england come 2021 saying he will return to his native new zealand after the lions tour. he has been a fixture of northern hemisphere rugby for the last two decades or so. now his intentions are clear. decades or so. now his intentions a re clear. world decades or so. now his intentions are clear. world cup glory with wales in japan are clear. world cup glory with wales injapan before completing the lions hat—trick in south africa. the action continues at women's world cup. let's have quick look at what has happened so far today. a brilliant goal from asisat oshoala helped earn nigeria their first win of the 2019 world cup. the ex—liverpool forward scored their second in a 2—0 win over south korea in group a. both germany and spain are currently looking to build on opening wins on group b. hesitation at the back post allowed germany to slide in and bundled the ball over the line. these are live pictures from

valenciennes. not farfrom full—time. the score is currently 1-0 to full—time. the score is currently 1—0 to the germans. france are back in action against norway in nice. you can watch that life from hpm. away from today's action, there are plenty more side's preparing for their next matches in france, including, of course, england and scotland, who are both in group d. we'll speak to katie gornall, who's with england in a moment, but first let's see how scotland are progressing. jane dougall has been with the scotland camp today and jane, are spirits still high, despite that opening defeat? they have had plenty of time to reflect a nd they have had plenty of time to reflect and put that behind them. they have had two rest days and spent it at their beautiful chateau an hour north of rennes. they have a lovely big front garden and a golf
6:41 pm
course and a machine that spits out footballs, a set of goals and even the head coach has been having a little bit of a go trying to show off some of the skills she still has alongside her assistant head coach andy thompson. a few of the players we have been speaking to have been saying how much they've enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle and the noise of a busy city like rennes. they have been saying they have bonded a bit more and spend more time together. the wi—fi isn't great so they have been playing board isn't great so they have been playing boa rd games isn't great so they have been playing board games and pool. their training ground is very isolated as well. they have been demonstrating how much fun they've been having at training as well because one of their coaches has been employing a rather unusual technique of using a squeaky rubber chicken. yes, you heard me right. a squeaky rubber chicken. they have been running around with that and the idea is to touch their opponents with it. an
6:42 pm
english person said to me something along the lines of, it's a plucky scott, but we will ignore that. the arsenal midfielder kim little spoke to mea arsenal midfielder kim little spoke to me a little earlier today and she was saying how much they were bonding and how much fun they were having in training. she did explain to me the rules of chicken run. great group of girls here. we to me the rules of chicken run.l great group of girls here. we all appreciate each other. we are on a journey with each other and we are making it as good as we can be. you are obviously having fun in training. took me through the chicken game. just throw the chicken about and hit your team—mates with its basically. obviously they are having fun at camp. but the hard work has started because in the quieter moments scotland would admit that third in the world, england,
6:43 pm
they weren't really expecting to beat them but the other two countries in their group, well, victory is doable. they watched argentina against japan the victory is doable. they watched argentina againstjapan the other night. argentina didn't play well but scotland will not underestimate them. a great deal has changed since them. a great deal has changed since the last time they played japan. including the idea of the plucky scots. thank you very much. scotland ta ke scots. thank you very much. scotland take onjapan on friday while england will look to consolidate top spot against argentina. our correspondence has spent some time with england. i think many people will feel it's amazing to see argentina here at all given that they qualified for this world cup despite a two—year hiatus when i had no coach, played no matches and dropped out of the fifa world rankings altogether. we don't know which england players they will come
6:44 pm
up which england players they will come up against on friday because phil neville rotated his squad very heavily in the warm up games. we expect him to do that again and even the players are expecting that. even the players are expecting that. even the goalkeepers. that is something karen bardsley told me about earlier. we didn't really know if it would apply to the goalkeepers but they came out and basically said it would. based on our strengths, whoever is fit for that specific game will play. so let's put the ego aside. we want to win. at the end of out aside. we want to win. at the end of our day ask what is deep and committed to wanting to win. no one will remember in five or ten years' time who did what when. they're just going to look at the world cup medal and say, yeah, i was a going to look at the world cup medal and say, yeah, iwas a part going to look at the world cup medal and say, yeah, i was a part of that. karen bardsley has been england's number one in three world cups but she may well be replaced in goal by carly telford. i was at training
6:45 pm
earlier with england and toni duggan didn't play a full part in training. the game on friday will come too soon for her with england taking no risks. it is a huge opportunity for england because they know if they beat argentina on friday they are through to the knockout stages with a game to spare. you can of course watch both of those games across the bbc. more football news, and the start of the premier league is a still a couple of months away but already manchester united have done their first bit of business with swansea's danieljames signing a five—year deal at old trafford with with an option to extend for a further year. in a deal worth an initial £15 million. united boss ole gunnar solksjaer called the club "the perfect environment" for the 21 year old wales international to "continue his development". still to come on sportsday... tyson fury‘s in action this weekend, and he's got some harsh words for anthonyjoshua, we'll hearfrom him
6:46 pm
before 7 o'clock. and we take a look at the life and times of the unmisstakable diego maradona as a new film about the former world cup winner is released. we've had another update on the progress of andy murray, as he eases his way back into tennis with a view of making it into singles action at another grand slam. his recovery from another hip surgery is going well, with murray due to play in the doubles at queen's next week. but he's told david law that grand slam singles return will probably have to wait until next year. i feel good. ifeel good. i'm just i feel good. i'm just easing ifeel good. i'm just easing my i feel good. i'm just easing my way back into it a little bit. i have been practising quite a bit in the last few weeks and i have been enjoying it. pain—free and still just a bit slow for singles. i need to build up my strength a bit more.
6:47 pm
doubles wise i feel like i'll be around. the pain—free aspect is what has been the most pleasing thing for me. i got used to dealing with the pain and was kind of ready for that to be over with. it is difficult when you have been in pain for a long time, it is hard to remember what it was like beforehand and now iam back what it was like beforehand and now i am back to being pain—free again. it is nice i can go out and enjoy things off the tennis court as well which i wasn't doing for a while. then obviously were no in the gym and on the court it is easier to enjoy it when you are not in discomfort. i have been feeling good, practising playing doubles and doing fine but once you get back on the match court that is when you really test yourself and i would imagine after here i will get a better idea of where i am at. after that i don't just finish
6:48 pm
better idea of where i am at. after that i don'tjust finish playing doubles at wimbledon is an straight onto singles, i will need time to build up again and do another block of rehab and training to get myself in that position. but i look forward to it. but you hope is to play singles this year? if i can, yes. to it. but you hope is to play singles this year? if! can, yes. if not that is fine as well. with the way things are progressing just now i would say i am optimistic about being able to do that. i don't know when but i'll keep doing the right stuff. doubles is a good middle ground between what i have been doing and getting on the singles court. hopefully i will keep progressing in the right direction and make sure i get there. we'd love to see him back, wouldn't we? tyson fury says his fellow heavyweight, anthony joshua, is "finished", after losing his world champion status at the start of the month. joshua lost his three world titles in a shock defeat to andy ruizjr in new york. and as fury prepares for his own
6:49 pm
fight, against the german, tom schwarz, in las vegas this weekend, he's had plenty to say about that stunning defeat for his british rival. i thought joshua i thoughtjoshua would win on points like with joseph i thoughtjoshua would win on points like withjoseph parker. when he realised he couldn't knock you out in the first few rounds he'll get to a point victory. everybody else said he would get knocked out but he has a tough little fellow. body types mean nothing in boxing. i myself beat one of the best champions in the last 20 years. when he came to the last 20 years. when he came to the ring i saw he didn't want to be there. people will say tyson is on his case again but i have been around boxing all my life. i grew up around boxing all my life. i grew up around it. i have seen bare—knuckle fights and men fighting with machetes, i have seen everything. when i saw him i knew he didn't want to be there. you talk about body types, we spoke to carl frampton
6:50 pm
afterwards and debating with all the mucking about anthony ruby's's body —— andy ruiz‘s body but was it actuallyjoshua's body? —— andy ruiz‘s body but was it actually joshua's body? physically he could beat anybody. he has probably worn out every treadmill in the gym and smashed every bag to pieces. it is all very unimportant. i would be on the phone to the trainer saying you're sacked and on the phone to the conditioner saying you're sacked. boxing isn't rocking science and today people are all trying to make it very calculated. if he can fight he can fight and if he can't fight forget about it. tyson fury speaking to mike costello there. after a disappointing few days of rain affecting the cricket world cup here, there was some relief for fans
