5:46 pm
cinema releases is mark kermode. so mark, what do we have this week? a very mixed bag, we have men in black international,, we have the hummingbird project which is a film about obsession, and a child's eye view of the world in we the animals. always have a mixed bag. men in black, i remember seeing the first one, ididn‘t black, i remember seeing the first one, i didn't think they would make three more. you're not alone. i thought the first was great, i thought the first was great, i thought it was smart, funny, i like the special effects, i thought the story was well told. second one, terrible, third one, not great. the fourth instalment has breathed new life in it. molly, as a child, met an alien, nobody believed her, and she decides she wants to become one
5:47 pm
of the many black, she pursues this dream and meets up with emma thompson's agent 0h. she then teamed up thompson's agent 0h. she then teamed up with chris hemsworth in an adventure which involved extraterrestrials and the most powerful weapon ever in the universe and also to mild gm gianni playing a pawn in a chess set who is looking for a queen. —— pawn in a chess set who is looking fora queen. —— kumail pawn in a chess set who is looking for a queen. —— kumail nanjiani. excuse me. what happened here? we had the best party. kanye showed up and dropped like the best album. look around, we got our as—is kicked! my queen! i'll never serve another. i must and my own life in the most painful way possible. i don't think that she would want you to, you know... who are you to know what a queen would or wouldn't want?
5:48 pm
are you a queen? well, to the extent that all women are, yes. but no, no. i'm not a queen. you know what she is, though, is an agent. is that a title? it is a title. maybe the best way to honour the dead is to go on living. yes. i pledge loyalty eternally to you, agent m. no, no, no, i'm not interested in a subject. too late, it's done, i've pledged the loyalty. if you should die before i, i promised to end my own life... in the most painful way possible. now, you didn't laugh during that. that is some of the best stuff in the film. i think that character is the film. i think that character is the funniest character in the film andi the funniest character in the film and i did have a few chuckles during it. the main problem is many black was really good but you are right, didn't necessarily need all these sequels? it is not terrible, it is just terribly ordinary. there is a local —— an awful lot of visual effects going on, an awful lot of stuff being thrown at the screen but
5:49 pm
it felt disposable. the person behind the previous sequels, neither of them were as good as the previous one. i do think kumail nanjiani is a really fu n ny one. i do think kumail nanjiani is a really funny writer and performer. i think that is not anything like enough to paste over the cracks.“ that the hollywood way? if they are making money, why not keep making them? there was a law that a sequel will take two thirds of what the original took regardless of how good oi’ original took regardless of how good or bad, that is no longer the case but if you have name recognition, your money is safe, even if the film itself is frankly not good. the hummingbird project, is that good?|j think hummingbird project, is that good?” think it is. jesse eisenberg, he was so think it is. jesse eisenberg, he was so edgy and social network, he

placed them but he was a trader who believes his cousin into leaving the organisation they work for, and joining him in digging a trench from kansas joining him in digging a trench from ka nsas to joining him in digging a trench from kansas to new york, down which he can put a fibre cable that will shave the time of trading from 17 ms to 16 ms. and this apparently will create a tiny opportunity equivalent to the beating of a hummingbird's wing that will allow them to get ahead of the game. the funny thing is it sounds terribly unpromising. in fact, it is really gripping. there is a great performance by salma hayek as the boss who doesn't wa nt to salma hayek as the boss who doesn't want to let them die. it is about somebody dedicated themselves to a dream which is mad which involves them bearing this pipeline through rivers and mountains, no matter what it is, they have to carry on going through a straight line. on one hand,it through a straight line. on one hand, it is about family loyalty, on the other hand, the vision of having a faster way of doing something but it is about obsession and giving
5:51 pm
yourself over to an obsession and i can take over your life even to the detriment of your health. i actually thought it was really good. we the animals. the kids are left to fend for themselves. it felt very naturalistic but it also had a real poetry to it. he was a kid. what if it's pops? telephone rings hello? mami. how come you didn't set off when i called you? because you sound so ugly. here, try. yo—yo, what's up? woman! this is your husband talking to you right now. you better act right! what do you want from me? digame, mami, talk to me. i've been missing you.
5:52 pm
i've been missing you real bad. i know, mami, i know. i'm sorry. no, baby, i'm sorry. i think that has got a really lovely natural tone to it and what i really like is on the one hand it has that charming naturalism but it is also very poetic. you feel every drop of rain, you can feel the mud between their fingers rain, you can feel the mud between theirfingers when rain, you can feel the mud between their fingers when they are burrowing around on the ground. there are moments in which it goes to animation because the youngest character draws on these animations come to life. it deals with some very difficult subject matter, it deals with kids coming to terms with their own sexuality, it deals with a violent relationship between their pa rents violent relationship between their parents and trying to find their own
5:53 pm
way in the world. it is tempting to say it is like that kind of movie terrence malick made before he went up terrence malick made before he went up the boy or the kind of thing david gordon green did before he did... is it is closer to the florida project. the world is half —— harsh and tough but actually it is being looked at through a child's eyes and it has a real poetic feel to it. it is a feature debut and i thought it was very fine and effective piece of working. the acting looked extraordinarily. you literally thought you were eavesdropping on those three kids having a completely normal and charming and really tender conversation about something which is very difficult which is that their parents are having difficulties. i really liked it.
5:54 pm
dirty god. it is about a woman who isa dirty god. it is about a woman who is a survivor of an acid attack and is a survivor of an acid attack and is trying to redefine her life. this actress, you would think she had been before a camera all her life, it isa been before a camera all her life, it is a really natural but very complicated performance and i think she is an absolute star in the making. the film itself is really good, it deals with difficult subject matter in a way which is su btle subject matter in a way which is subtle and effective. she is an absolute star, i thought her performance was extraordinary, vicky knight, and aim to watch the future. rocket man. i loved it. we both want to see it again. you can out of the cinema and you want to watch it again straightaway because it is so good. highly recommended. festivity. infield street could talk. i think
5:55 pm
barryjenkins is infield street could talk. i think barry jenkins is great. infield street could talk. i think barryjenkins is great. it is a film about social justice and imprisonment but it is at heart a love story. if people didn't see it in cinemas and many people didn't, didn't find the owners it should have done, get it on dvd or blu—ray, it is fabulous. barry jenkins did moonlight. moonlight, it is astonishing that phil did as well as it did, it came out of nowhere, a little independent movie. we have got used to the fact that it was a huge hit, it started as a really, really small movie thatjust huge hit, it started as a really, really small movie that just found its audience and deservedly so. really small movie that just found its audience and deservedly som is great that that can still happen in today's hollywood. it renews your faith in films when something like that can be discovered. there is a block map —— blockbuster market out there. rocket man is a film that ta kes there. rocket man is a film that takes risks, more than bohemian
5:56 pm
rhapsody did, but it still finds a mainstream audience. we are in a pretty good period at the moment. people say cinema isn't as good as it used to be. barry norman said every year at the number of comparatively good and bad films. and we have a mixed bag every week and it is up to you to decide which are good and which are bad. thank you. thank you. that is it for this week. thank you for watching. but is it from both of us. it has probably been a perfect week for heading to the cinema, it has been a very unsettled week for most of us. we have had some statistics forjune from the met office. this map shows the rainfall average as an anomaly for the month ofjune. the darker blues is where the heaviest
5:57 pm
rain was. some parts of england have seen double the monthly average rainfall already and we are only the middle part ofjune. it has also been disappointingly cold as well across england and wales and you probably again don't need me to tell you that. i do have some good news, in the forecast, things will quieten down in the next few days, it will get drier and sunnier. for the start of the weekend, we are still under the weekend —— influence at this low pressure. these weather fronts are spiralling across, producing rain. it is present in the south—east at the moment, you can see whether showers are, stretching up through eastern england and the western fringes as well. this will continue tonight, band of cloud, a band of rain pushing into the west. further east, clearer skies, we keep those temperatures, though, perhaps into double digits. we start off on saturday morning with cloud and rain gradually drifting through. through
5:58 pm
the weekend, the low—pressure dress to the north—west, the closest you are to that low, perhaps the more of that unsettled weather you will say. areas like western scotland, northern ireland, western fringes, wales, we see rain pushing eastwards on saturday. it starts sunny, clouds over, but it should stay sunny for eastern england in daylight hours. plenty of showers around to the north and west on sunday but not a bad day, really, sunny spells and scattered showers, few showers across much of central and eastern england with a south—westerly breeze, perhaps those temperatures up breeze, perhaps those temperatures up to 19 or20 breeze, perhaps those temperatures up to 19 or 20 degrees and as we move into monday, things will start to warm up quite nicely. it does look as though we will start to see the influence of high pressure across the near continent driving the story for a couple of days, and a good deal of dry weather in the
