female jockey to ride a winner at royal ascot for 32 years, and just the second ever. she rode 33 to i outsider thanks be to victory in the sandringham stakes. and here to give us more on it is our very own lizzie greenwood hughes. hayley turner had already made history as a female jockey at top level. the first female jockey to win 100 races level. the first female jockey to win100 races in a year and now she is the first female jockey to win at royal ascot in 32 years. she did it in style and what's fascinating is she's kind of been semi retired for the last few years. she went into full retirement a couple of years ago, came back because in france,
6:36 pm
female jockeys have a weight allowa nce female jockeys have a weight allowance so she has kind of came out of retirement and she said, can i come out of retirement and she said, can icome in out of retirement and she said, can i come in right for you? because she could make the weight, eight stone, she got the right on this horse. she is meeting the queen's course magnetic charm to win. slightly overshadowed because she received a ban overshadowed because she received a ba n after overshadowed because she received a ban after the race for overuse of the whip but flatjockeys haven't been doing it, female flatjockeys haven't been getting rides. lizzie kelly, rachel blackmore, they've been winning at cheltenham festival. here at royal ascot, a flat equivalent in this country, it's taken 32 equivalent in this country, it's ta ken 32 years equivalent in this country, it's taken 32 years for another female jockey to do it. frankie dettori, his seventh win at this year's royal ascot. a great day for frankie dettori, but a much better day,

really, for female jockeys with what hayley turner did. scotland have arrived back home after their disappointing exit from the women's world cup. manager shelley kerr was left bemoaning referreeing decisions throughout the tournament, after they gave away a three goal lead in dramatic fashion against argentina in their final group game. they were given a warm welcome home. a valiant effort against argentina in the final. well, after scotland's world cup heartbreak, involving the video assistant referee, england midfielder karen carney has been standing up for the system which has seen a number of penalties being retaken. scotland fell foul of the rule, when lee alexander saved a penalty but var showed she'd come off her line before the ball was struck. argentina scored the retake, sending the scots home but carney can see it from the other side.
6:38 pm
i don't think people appreciate how difficult it is. it looks easy from 12 yards out and when you're under pressure and fatigued and there are thousands and millions of people watching at home, i don't think people appreciate the pressure that person is under so i don't think there's ever an easy time to take a penalty, even with what's going on at the moment, it's always difficult and it takes a big character to step up and it takes a big character to step up and want to take one. england are looking to avoid a plane home for now, they will be facing cameroon in the last 16 on sunday in the same day the united states meets pain. there is also norway against australia, and germany take on nigeria. now that the group stages are complete, we are looking forward to the knockout stages. it gets under way in france on saturday. germany and nigeria is the first

game which will be interesting to see how the former champions approach that game. it will be all eyes on the team sheet to see if their star midfielderjennifer makes their star midfielderjennifer makes the cut because she has been injured for the last couple of games with a toe injury so all eyes on whether she plays. a big ask, you might think, for nigeria to get something from this game. this is the first time through to the knockout stages since 1999 so you would fancy germany. the second game is a cracker, former champions norway against australia. australia were favoured by a lot of people to cause a few upsets and they did suffer a shock loss against italy. they have found form since, their captain has dragged them kicking and screaming through the group stages and they will now face norway. you would think that if sam care can continue her goal—scoring form, she has five in this competition, that they will may well have enough to get past
6:40 pm
norway. england's men are currently in the under 21 european championships in italy. they know a convincing win over group leaders romania is their only real hope of reaching the semifinal. so far it is goalless. they are also hoping croatia can beat france to give them a chance of going through later this evening. the africa cup of nations gets under way in egypt this evening. as the hosts take on zimbabwe. the likes of liverpool stars mohamed salah and sadio mane and manchester city's riyad mahrez will be in action over the coming weeks, in the first afcon tournament to be held during the off season in europe. welcome to egypt, the venue of the 32nd africa cup of nations and the home of poster boy mohammed sala.
6:41 pm
they are seeking their first title since 2010 and will be relying on mohammed sala who recently won the champions league with liverpool. he might be the main attraction but many of the teams are filled with global stars. the cynical team are the top ranked team in the tournament —— senegal. morocco will be looking after scoring 21 goals for ajax. this is the fifth time egypt have hosted the tournament and they have also won it a record seven times. this is an africa cup of nations of change, be held in the summerfor the first time while the number of teams has increased from 16 to 24.
6:42 pm
this has opened the doors for three debutants. the this has opened the doors for three debuta nts. the fans this has opened the doors for three debutants. the fans are arriving and the excitement is building. egypt is ready. it's a tournament that we should really looking forward to but it should have been held in cameroon originally. they were removed as hosts last year, after delays in planning. bbc africa sports reporter sarah mohsen is in cairo... egypt is ready to host the tournament tonight and i think egypt was the best second choice after cameroon because this country has one of the best infrastructure in the whole continent and we have already hosted it before, egypt has, and they have won three times out of them. the egyptian government was
6:43 pm
able to prepare six stadiums to host the tournament with all possible facilities and also 5—star hotels to host all the players and african teams and the fans as well. right now the temperature is 36 degrees and it will be like 41 and 43 in the upcoming days of the tournament, so it won't be easy for the african players, may be the egyptians are used to it, but it won't be easy for other players who are used to the summer other players who are used to the summer in europe. i think this will somehow affect the players. i think there is player on mohammed sala because he is looking for his first title with egypt with the national tea m title with egypt with the national team and he is looking forward to it, especially after the world cup.
6:44 pm
especially after winning the champions league with liverpool. it was a busy day for the 18—year—old canadian felix auger alia seem at the queen's club championships. after beating nick kyrigos and grigor dimitrov in the singles yesterday, he caused another upset today, knocking out the top seed stefanos tsitsipas. aliiasime, who is currently the youngest player in the atp top 100, beat tsitsipas in straights sets afterwards he also played doubles but he and partner alex de minaur were defeated. in just under an hour's time, the crowd in west london will get another glimpse of andy murray as he returns in the doubles alongside feliciano lopez to take on the british pair of dan evans and ken skupski. but in the build up murray has admitted he was turned down by world number two ash barty for the mixeddoubles at wimbledon next month.

i asked her during the french open, i told her, she said, i asked her during the french open, itold her, she said, i'm i asked her during the french open, i told her, she said, i'm sorry but i'm already playing singles and doubles. i messaged her and said, i'm already playing singles and doubles. i messaged herand said, no worries, completely understand, i just wanted to find the best partner and she said to me, there are many better out there than me. a few days later she won the french open so i messaged her and said i told you you are the best! she still rejected me! well, the stars of women's tennis have been out in force offering their services to be murray's partner, including maria sharapova who retweeted a video of her greatest shots originally sent by the us open. and the legendary billiejean king said that she'd be the ideal partner for murray even at the age of 75. she says she's checked her calendar and is lacing her shoes up. it's been another day of mercedes dominance in formula one with the mercedes of lewis hamilton and valteri bottas leading the time sheets in the two practice sessions

ahead of sunday's french grand prix. but maybe the news of the day, saw ferrari's attempt to overturn the penalty that cost sebastian vettel victory in the canadian grand prix last time out, rejected by formula 1 officials. jennie gow has more from the south of france. we are here on the french riviera and it's the first day of practice done and dusted but the big talking point that's really come out of it is the fact that sebastien vettel‘s right, or ferrari's right to review what happened in canada, taking away the win after he went off track and came back in an unsafe manner, has been thrown out so there will be no review, no new evidence was delivered, so it's gone away. hamilton keeps one of those 25 points and it is nothing vettel can do. he doesn't get an additional penalty but that's just the way it goes. we move onto this weekend, the
6:47 pm
focus for ferrari has to be on clawing back some of those they have lost but mercedes looked really promising so far this weekend in the practice sessions. hamilton led one, bottas the other. young brit, norris, did really well in the mclaren, he was a standout candidate got fifth fastest time so a lot will stand on qualifying. pole position is now so important in formula 1. mercedes have everything looking good but you just never know when a reliability issue or something will just arise that means that ferrari could challenge or somebody else, may be. red bull didn't have a representative time so maybe they can come back into play and challenge ferrari but whatever happens, mercedes and lewis hamilton now 29 points ahead of the rest of the field and have a big advantage going into this weekend.

one at the international tournament at devonshire park, a chance for the fa ns to at devonshire park, a chance for the fans to get up close to the stars. it's my favourite week of the year and we get really good people here. i've been to the french open and wimbledon and a few premier events and this is probably the best one so far. i can't wait to see some of the top professionals play when you're not lucky enough to get tickets for wimbledon. the defending champion caroline wozniacki returns year year—on—year with high regard for the grass. when people are complimentary at that level you think to yourself, hang on, i got to maintain that now and do better next time so as much as it it's nice, the pressure is now on! all eyes are on canada's bouchard, pressure is now on! all eyes are on ca nada's boucha rd, crashing pressure is now on! all eyes are on canada's bouchard, crashing out sick

done so when i saw that it was on the calendar, it felt like a nice time for me. the europeans were a little bit too early in terms of recovering and coming back so this was a nice one, a competition i've never done before, i love that it's a multisport event so you can get the team gb atmosphere and i'm excited to do the new routines and compete and to come with a title would be very good. great britain's menna fitzpatrick and jen kehoe have decided to make a career change just 15 months after winning four medals including a gold in the downhill skiing at the winter paralympics. the change though is only temporary as they face an uphill battle at the yorkshire para cycling international in september. kate grey went to meet the pair. menna fitzpatrick and her guide captainjen menna fitzpatrick and her guide captain jen kehoe are menna fitzpatrick and her guide captainjen kehoe are best known for their performances on skis. britain's most decorated winter paralympians and britain's most decorated winter pa ralympians and two britain's most decorated winter paralympians and two champions at 19 out of a typical —— are a formidable

that's it from us. a couple of things going on at the moment, england's under 21s still goalless with romania at the european championships. they need a win to make it through at all. some tennis coming up at queen's, andy murray and his partner lopez will be back on the court for the doubles just after 7:30pm and a reminder of our top story at the cricket world cup, england have been beaten for the second time. they lost against sri la nka second time. they lost against sri lanka by 20 runs at headingley in yorkshire. that's it from us. plenty more sport across the weekend. thanks forjoining us. hello again. it has been a decent summer's day for many of us. plenty of sunshine for most of us. it
6:56 pm
doesn't get better than fine sunshine in cumbria and feeling pleasa ntly sunshine in cumbria and feeling pleasantly warm. the cloud through the day has been melting away so we have increasingly clear skies over across england and wales and at times northern ireland and scotland. the outlook exception is across the northern isles. it will stay quite breezy and perhaps later in the night we will see more cloud working across northern ireland into western scotland. not a cold night for many of us, temperatures of six to 12 celsius and the start of the weekend looking promising. we got an area of high pressure moving across the british isles, something we haven't seen british isles, something we haven't seen for the whole of the month of june. it means weather—wise we start off with sunshine across england and wales and that's how it will stay all day, plenty of cloud at times for northern ireland and scotland but mostly fine with spells of sunshine coming through, the northern isles in seattle and could
6:57 pm
see passing showers and it will remain quite breezy. temperatures are rising, 19 in edinburgh, quite widely for england and wales temperatures moving into the low 20s. the second half of the weekend is looking quite as good because although the high pressure is still there, this low pressure to the southwest is going to start to course problems. initially during the morning it should be dry with breezy spells of sunshine and high cloud and it will start to feel increasingly humid across the south of england and southern parts of wales as temperatures rise up to 24 celsius but you can't help but notice this area of rain. through sunday afternoon and into the evening time, we see some potentially thundery downpours across parts of england and wales. the amount of rain we get is going to vary from place to place but in the wettest areas, more than enough to course localised flooding. it could be even worse for the hills of scotla nd could be even worse for the hills of scotland where we could get up to
