is all i had on bbc news now though, it is sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm jane dougall. a poor start at portrush. favourite rory mcilroy has a shocker with eight over on the first day of the open. england women are losing their grip on the ashes after australia did well with the bat in the test match at taunton. and an exciting finish for brit simon yates who's won stage 12 of the tour de france. also coming up in the programme: an epic battle between these two rivals — one point seperated australia and new zealand in the netball world cup, but which one will england face?
6:34 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. we start the programme in northern ireland where it was all set to be a romantic homecoming for rory mcilroy. the first time in 68 years that royal portrush had staged the open and mcilroy was one of the favourites to win it. but that now looks very unlikely after a dreadful first round of eight over par. our reporter adam wild has been watching today. adam, just how disappointing was today's round from rory? well, the hutch descending over the third hole behind me but it has been a day as dramatic and at times spectacular as the surroundings here at port rush on the north coast of cou nty at port rush on the north coast of county antrim. rory mcilroy the
6:35 pm
story of rory has been what everyone has been talking about here around the course. and not for the reasons many would have hoped. he was the home hero, he was the home favourite, everyone had come here expecting him to do far better than he did. it went wrong right from the very start, putting his opening tee shot out of bounds, he then went on to score eight on the first hole. he did pull it back a bit but then a double bogey and a triple bogey on the closing holes left him with a 79, 80 over the closing holes left him with a 79,80 over par round. he has the closing holes left him with a 79, 80 over par round. he has now the closing holes left him with a 79,80 over par round. he has now a mountain to climb if he is to be in contention to make the cut —— eight over par. needless to say, he was profoundly disappointed with what happened today. a start is a start and that's fine. it was the end of the round that played the last three

and five over par and undid all that good work in the middle of the round. i try to stay with it, i did for the most part, round. i try to stay with it, i did forthe most part, i round. i try to stay with it, i did for the most part, i lost concentration after i missed the par oi'i concentration after i missed the par on 16 and then i drew a bad line in the 18. just one of those things. disappointing for rory. just a few hours ago, tiger woods teed off. he is not doing much better. no, he is really struggling as well, but like rory michael roy earlier today, commanding a huge crowd following him around the galleries, absolutely packed out all along the course to watch tiger woods, one of the great icons of modern sport. of course, a resurgence of some sort over recent months. he has been getting up at one o'clock in the morning we are told to get his body clock accustomed to the time here in
6:37 pm
northern ireland but it has not done him much good. he is 6/312. he went off all right but he has struggled in the rain and the wind over the last hour or so. he is one of the late starters so he is still on course. the crowds still following him as they make their weary way back to the 18th hole with him but it hasn't gone the way he would have hoped today. shall we talk about someone who has had a good day on this course then. irishman shane lowry has been the clubhouse leader with four underfor lowry has been the clubhouse leader with four under for most of the day but he has been challenged. yes, let's talk about something positive. shane lowry of course many people here are big fans of his, the irishman. he went out early, he was the early leader and he led much of the early leader and he led much of the day on four under par. but like you say, he has been matched in the last couple of hours. most notably byjohn ram who went off in
6:38 pm
spectacular fashion, byjohn ram who went off in spectacularfashion, the byjohn ram who went off in spectacular fashion, the spaniard. he was in great form, he won the irish open earlier this month. he is joined shane lowry on four under par.jb joined shane lowry on four under par. jb holmes, the american, is also there on four under par. let me give you a few of the others who are just a shot also behind them stop we have tommy fleetwood an ominously brooks koepka of the world number one, also poised just behind on three under par but let's hear from shane lowry after his four under round for the day. i thoroughly enjoy today. the crowds are unbelievable, getting cheered on to every green is such a special feeling and i try to enjoyed that as much as i can as i was doing my work and get down to business. it would be an exciting few days ahead, i just hope i can give them something to cheer about. just briefly, david duvall hasn't played well either. he's had a nightmare on this course.
6:39 pm
yes, if you think rory has had a bad day, spare a thought for david duval. a former open champion himself, he shot a 20 over par round, iam himself, he shot a 20 over par round, i am sure there are many golfers thinking they could do better than that. he had a disastrous day. mainly due to a better than that. he had a disastrous day. mainly due to 8111 at the seventh hole. but let's finish with a positive note because there was a spectacular moment a little earlier. emiliano grillo with the only hole in one of the day, the first of the open since 2016. a huge war going first of the open since 2016. a huge wargoing up around first of the open since 2016. a huge war going up around here. to cricket now and england women are struggling to bowl australia out on the first day of the ashes test at taunton. henry moran is at taunton for us. they lost all three of the one—day internationals. but australia are
6:40 pm
looking strong. at stumps they are 265-3. england's task into this test match was a straightforward one. when the game and keep their hopes of reclaiming the ashes alive. australia won all three of the one—day internationals to give them a six point lead in this multiformat series, they also won the toss today and that meant they could put on a big total to bat england out of the ashes. it was a day. after super overs and a super sunday at the men's world cup, cricket was back to its picturesque roots at taunton. and england's women came out with a point to prove. nicole bolton bowled early on by katherine brunt, the top of off but that was about as good as it got. the aussies are on the shores of only winning on their minds and a maiden test 50 quickly put the tories into a strong decision. she fell to kirsty gordon, the scottish spinner with her first test wicket since switching to

represent england. the home side we re represent england. the home side were back in the game but only briefly as chances like this went down. captain meg lanning and elise perry then forced australia back into control with 50 of their own and even after meg lanning fell, the tories quickly steadied the ship. rachael haynes soon becoming the fourth batter to reach a half century as they passed 250. and already ominous total for australia just what england didn't need. already ominous total for australia just what england didn't needm already ominous total for australia just what england didn't need. it is not just this excellent australian side that england are up against. they also face a battle with the elements. the next couple of days, a lot of rain is forecast in the south—west. that will take time out of the match and with australia dominating, england can't afford to lose too much time or theyjust simply won't have time to turn things around and when the test match. a draw for australia sees them retaining the trophy. time for a look at some of the other days sports stories in brief.

well to claw that back. for all of the money it was going to be a draw and then australia won it by one goal. a fantastic game and it really took it to the next level of competition. we will come back to you ina competition. we will come back to you in a moment, but we did catch up with both the new zealand and australia at the end of that match to hear what they think about their potential match against england. their shooting circle is pretty potent and they've got a lot of variety as well, probably similar to what we face today against new zealand. so some of the [earnings we can take away from today will help us against whoever we come up against. home court you can't ignore it. it is a big occasion for them and it will be a do or die match. it is another opportunity and a big one for us because we need to better. they certainly know that england are going to be a tough opposition and we will hopefully see that match from about 8pm this evening. but

let's talk about the home nations. it has been a real tough tournament for scotland and northern ireland but northern ireland won tonight. for scotland and northern ireland but northern ireland won tonightm was a tight game, lots of fantastic matches today about to come through that and compete for ninth and tenth, they will be happy with that. they were ranked eighth so they can leave here with their head held high. they lost to zimbabwe in their initial group which was a shop but zimbabwe have gone on to do great things so it is nothing to be ashamed of. if they get ninth it is not too far below their world ranking. an epic match for scotland up ranking. an epic match for scotland up against trinidad and tobago. it was 43 all. that is a way to go in front of this crowd but not the result they wanted. such a physical game and very low scoring but u nfortu nately, scotla nd game and very low scoring but unfortunately, scotland will not make that play off due to their goal average. they would have known that
