while two former labour prime ministers warned against no—deal. just imagine if we tumble out of europe without a deal, with no further endorsement from the british people, against the wishes of parliament. i mean, don't you think there's going to be a huge reaction on the other side? the frontrunner in the tory leadership race — borisjohnson — insists a deal can be reached by the end of october if britain "rediscovers its sense of mission". screaming armed mobs attack pro—democracy protesters in hong kong — dozens of masked men

1:02 pm
good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news that one. the foreign office minister sir alan duncan has resigned from the government, quitting ahead of an expected borisjohnson victory in the race to be conservative leader and prime minister. party members have until 5pm to return their ballots for either jeremy hunt or borisjohnson — the winner will be revealed tomorrow. the chancellor philip hammond and justice secretary david gauke have already said they intend to resign if mrjohnson wins, and it's thought other ministers could follow suit. meanwhile two former labour prime ministers — tony blair and gordon brown — have warned about the dangers of a no—deal brexit. our political correspondent jonathan blake reports. edging towards the finish, still the front runner, boris johnson edging towards the finish, still the front runner, borisjohnson takes a few more steps towards the job he's a lwa ys few more steps towards the job he's always wanted and the chance to ci’oss always wanted and the chance to cross the threshold of a rather more famous black door than this one. his opponent, who called himself the underdog from the start, is hoping

the race isn't overjust yet. but jeremy hunt's chances of overtaking mrjohnson seem slim. a final flourish from boris johnson, likening a new brexit deal to landing on the moon, writing in the daily telegraph: his supporters say it can be done. borisjohnson will do three things that will change the dynamic. first, absolute resolve as prime minister under leader of this country. that has been missing. people restore cabinet collective responsibility. and above all, inject optimism into this enterprise we are embarked on. others are deeply uneasy about boris johnson going into number ten. foreign office minister alan duncan has resigned before the result is even announced. others supporting jeremy hunt are warning against

packing the cabinet with staunch brexit supporters. if you want to put your tanks on the lawn at a critical time, fine, do put your tanks on the lawn at a criticaltime, fine, do that, but it would only produce a response from colleagues in parliament that i don't think anyone wants to see. i am working on the basis that whoever wins wants to see a deal, because thatis wins wants to see a deal, because that is in the uk's best interest, and accordingly, that is where all efforts should be. from a former prime minister to the new one, whoever it is, a reminder that arguments over whether the public should have another say won't be settled anytime soon. three years and more on from that vote, we have and more on from that vote, we have a wealth more information at our fingertips, and is it really undemocratic to go back to people and say, with a decision this magnitude, we are asking you, do you wa nt to magnitude, we are asking you, do you want to tell us again or think ain? want to tell us again or think again? the state has been set here at westminster for a change of prime minister, but whoever it is will know the difficulties theresa may faced getting brexit over the line
1:05 pm
here in parliament, awkward mps on the backbenches, no real change in the backbenches, no real change in the commons or in the eu position, those things won't disappear overnight. theresa may returned to downing street today knowing that the police escort, the trappings of office and the responsibilities of being prime minister will soon rest with someone else. jonathan blake, bbc news, westminster. our assistant political editor norman smith is at westminster. this ministerial resignation today, and the others that we now are probably going to come, are they a sign of the difficulty of the new leader will have in bringing his party together? the temptation for tea m party together? the temptation for teamjohnson party together? the temptation for team johnson will be to dismiss sir alan's resignation as sour grapes from someone who was going to be sacked anyway. he has never made any attempt to hide his disdain for borisjohnson. at attempt to hide his disdain for boris johnson. at the attempt to hide his disdain for borisjohnson. at the foreign office, he used to describe himself as boris johnson's

office, he used to describe himself as borisjohnson‘s poop scooper because of the messy cleaned up behind him. there is a sense that we are seeing bigger names like philip hammond and david gauke signalling they are ready to join the backbench opposition to no deal. when you get big namesjoining, opposition to no deal. when you get big names joining, that opposition to no deal. when you get big namesjoining, that gives cover to other tory mps to join. it gives more organisation and impetus, and many of them are very determined. speaking to one former minister this lunchtime, he said, i have nothing to lose. i don't care, i will do whatever it takes to stop no deal. if that means voting down a boris johnson government, so be it. there isa mirror johnson government, so be it. there is a mirror image, it seems to me, with the fate of theresa may. she faced entrenched opposition from the hardline brexit supporters. it seems borisjohnson faces hardline brexit supporters. it seems boris johnson faces entrenched opposition from his hardline remain supporters. the difference is that theresa may had at least a few months, a honeymoon period, where

she didn't face that backbench fury. mrjohnson, if he wins tomorrow, is not even in downing street but already his back bench remain opponents are preparing to take him on. norman, many thanks. police in hong kong have been severely criticised for failing to protect pro—democracy activists who were attacked by gangs of masked men at a train station. the group, wielding sticks and rods, beat up protesters as they returned from a rally. hong kong has had weeks of protests against a proposed extradition bill that could see people sent to mainland china for trial. hong kong's leader condemned the violence. celia hatton report contains images you may find disturbing. this is the violence that has shocked the people of once peaceful hong kong. groups of men in white attacking anyone in black. those who we re attacking anyone in black. those who were assumed to be on their way home from a pro—democracy demonstration. some of the men were wearing masks,

only minutes earlier, this was the three—way radio exchange between the iranian guards, the tanker and a royal navy warship. you are ordered, change your course to a 360. 360 degrees immediately. you must not impair, impede, obstruct or hamper the package ——obstruct or hamper the passage of the mv stena impero. the tanker was intercepted in omani waters by iranian forces operating out of nearby base, the royal navy was too far away to intervene. the problem for the british government is this. it clearly needs to protect its shipping in the gulf — you can see here how easily this tanker was diverted towards the iranian coast. but the royal navy doesn't have enough ships to do the job alone so it has to be part of a multinational forces. but britain does not want to be seen

to be tied too closely to the very hawkish us policy towards iran. meanwhile, this iranian tanker is being held off gibraltar. it was seized onjuly 4th by local police, backed up by royal marines, for allegedly breaking eu sanctions. iran wants it released, and threatened reciprocal action. i wouldn't draw too many parallels between the gibraltar arrest, which was carried out under international law for the breaking of eu sanctions, on the one hand, with this aggressive act of piracy that took place in omani waters on the other hand. there is another royal navy warship heading to the gulf, the destroyer hms duncan, but it is only replacing the warship that is already there. britain's surface fleet has almost halved since 2005. and there is a much bigger issue lurking in the background. the multinational iran nuclear deal is falling apart

after the us pulled out. iran is now suffocating under us sanctions. ultimately, it's only diplomacy that can reduce the ever increasing tension in the gulf. frank gardner, bbc news. our middle east correspondent tom bateman is in fujairah in the united arab emirates, in the gulf of oman. what more do we know about how the crew of the stena impera are getting on? that is right, remember, it was from the waters here that that ship lifted its anchor on friday for what should have been a routine voyage west. instead, it found itself forced in the other direction, across the strait of hormuz, where it is now off the iranian coast, with as you heard the iranian flag flying above it. the 23 crew members are mostly indian nationals, and for theirfamilies, this are mostly indian nationals, and for their families, this has are mostly indian nationals, and for theirfamilies, this has of course been a and extremely concerning

time. the company sterner held a meeting with five of the families in mumbai yesterday to update them of what they understand of the condition of the crew, though they have very little information. the families say they feel satisfied and reassured by what the company is doing, and by the diplomatic attem pts doing, and by the diplomatic atte m pts to doing, and by the diplomatic attempts to try to free the ship. of course, it has been extremely concerning. i was told that the pictures that were released, those dramatic pictures of masked revolution regard troops descending onto the deck of the tanker, that caused his elderly parents extreme anxiety. having said all that, of course, it is now up to notjust the company but also these international diplomatic efforts to try and make some progress. the port authorities say that all the crew members are in good health, but as for the relatives of the crewmember that i spoke to, they said they want to

1:16 pm
her opponent ed davey says he would put brexit and climate change at "the top of the list". he's ruled out a coalition with eitherjeremy corbyn or borisjohnson. but said he would consider going into government with what he described as "a decent partner". our political correspondent jessica parker is in central london. jessica. yes, iam jessica. yes, i am where the announcement will be made later. the set is being constructed behind me. may they may only have 12 mps but they could play a crucial role and this party is seen a crucial role and this party is seen as one on a crucial role and this party is seen as one on the up as recent su ccesses seen as one on the up as recent successes in the local and european election, one of the reasons it is thought is a clarity of message on brexit. both canned a cats have similar view, both want another referendum, both want to see the uk remain in the european union. so perhaps this contest is particularly

hours before the conservative leadership ballot closes — a foreign office minister resigns at the prospect of borisjohnson becoming prime minister. and coming up — prince george turns six — the third in line to the throne is in a joyful mood in photos taken to mark his birthday. coming up on bbc news. gareth bale looks to be on his way out of real madrid after head coach zinedine zidane left him out of the squad for a preseason friendly saying the welshman's departure would be good for everyone. the company whirlpool has apologised to the owners of its tumble dryers, as it launches a recall of half—a—million machines over fire risk concerns. certain models of the brands hotpoint, creda, indesit, swan and proline dryers have been blamed for causing hundreds of fires. whirpool‘s vice—president said the firm is now offering free replacements or partial refunds. our personal finance correspondent simon gompertz has more.

the charred belongings of a family in ayrshire — just one of 750 fires in the past few years involving tumble driers. afternoon because voting is mostly electronic, justin rose is seen as the favourite but we have learned to expect the unexpected. the announcement will be made at four o'clock it's completely crisped. this fire in a seventh floor flat in shepherds bush in london was also blamed on one of the faulty tumble driers. the family's flat was devastated. the impact it had on the family being put into weeks. another victim whose drier had already been modified by whirlpool told mps earlier this month how she'd had a fire while her children were inside. my baby was in the cot at the time, sleeping, because i'd got a toddler toddling around. he followed me in the kitchen, as i opened the door and saw the flames. i had to grab him and get out, and i had to get my son to help me grab my daughter out. now whirlpool will have to go
1:20 pm
further than making modifications for the faulty driers branded hotpoint, creda, indiset, swan and proline between 2004 and 2015. it will also have to offer a free replacement or an upgrade at a discount, costing no more than £99, or a refund of up to £150, depending on the age of the drier. the fact is we have inconvenienced people, there's probably been some confusion in terms of the messaging. the fact is in any of those cases we do apologise to our customers, to those who may have been confused, and it is an opportunity to say we're sorry, but it's also an opportunity to say we want to do more, we are not stopping where we have been over the last four year. but contacting the large numbers of owners who still have the driers will be a challenge. there are still hundreds of thousands of machines out there, in people's homes, that whirlpool cannot track down. they need to up their game here,

to make this recall effective, and if they are unable to do so, we need to see the government step in, and make sure these come out of people's homes. whirlpool is spending £1 million on advertising to alert the public and prevent more damage like this. the advice, if you think you might have one of the affected driers, don't use it, and tell the company. simon gompertz, bbc news. well, it comes as nearly 70,000 volvo cars in the uk are also being recalled over a fire risk related to an engine problem. let's speak to our business correspondent theo leggett. tell us more when is going on. volvo says it is recalls about 500,000 ca i’s says it is recalls about 500,000 cars worldwide, nearly 770,000 are in the uk. a please of plastic in the engine is prone to deforming at high temperatures and possibly catching fire. although volvo says

this is in very rare circumstances. so what it is doing is it is going to voluntarily carry out a repair, it says it is working on the fix at the moment. it can't say when that will be ready so when consumers will have to bring their cars to dealerships to have the work done. what it said as well, is that there is no reason for customers to be worried, so symptoms of this problem can include but are not limited to the engine management lit being lit, engine interruption, or lack of power, if customers have those problems, then they should probably go and see their dealers but otherwise, they are free to carry on using the car, it is not dangerous at the rest of the time. but the company says because there is this minor risk of fires occurring within the engine bay they are taking a safety first approach and they apologise for the convenience. it's emerged that the private security firm, gas, made gross profits of more than two million

pounds per year for running an immigration removal centre where detainees were mis—treated by staff. a bbc panorama programme, broadcast two years ago, highlighted verbal and physical abuse by workers at brook house, near gatwick airport. the national audit office found the centre made g4s1li.3 million pounds in profit from 2012 to 2018. our home affairs correspondent danny shaw reports. making money out of immigration detention. this is brook house removal centre, filmed secretly by a member of staff. the footage on bbc panorama showed detainees being threatened, and excessive force being used. it's now emerged that gas, which runs the centre, had been making more than £2 million

gross profits every year. i think it's completely unacceptable that we've seen gas make up to 20% gross profits at a time when this awful abuse was taking place of detainees on their watch. it raises real questions about gas's operation of the contract, but also of the home office monitoring of the system, that this could take place. is a national audit office report found that performance at brook house was monitored by onejunior civil servant. no penalties were imposed if staff used inappropriate force or language, yet gas was fined £17,000 for failing to report that detainees didn't have a table tennis table for several weeks. former gas manager nathan ward, who's now a priest, raised complaints when he worked at brook house. the system wasn't actually set up to support and look after those people in a decent and humane way, and the way gas operated also was counter to that as well, and that's why in the end i thought the only thing i could do was leave.
1:25 pm
gas says it's already made significant progress at brook house. the home office says it's changing the contracting model for the centre. the contract runs out next year. danny shaw, bbc news. leading surgeons have told the bbc‘s victoria derbyshire programme that women having breast implants should be warned about a condition linked to chronic pain and extreme fatigue. tens of thousands of women on online forums claim they have suffered from what's known as "breast implant illness". surgeons say more research is needed, but that patients should be warned about the condition. a warning this report by anna collinson contains flashing images. so, yeah, i'm terrified. naomi mcarthur started feeling ill as soon as she got breast implants. i remember i started getting like severe pains in my stomach. i was writing with a pen and i said to my mum, like, "i actually can't write, it's too hard." like, writing with a pen was that tiring.
1:26 pm
after four years of suffering, last summer, naomi discovered breast—impla nt illness — a condition which consists of a broad range of autoimmune symptoms, including chronic fatigue and pain. i'm about to go down and i'm scared. naomi made the difficult decision to have her implants removed. there was no guarantee her health would improve. but, within weeks, the symptoms disappeared. i had completely bloodshot eyes all the time and my eyes are white now. this is crazy. despite limited evidence, leading surgeons, including the british association of aesthetic plastic surgeons, have told the victoria derbyshire programme that women should be told about the risk of breast—implant illness ahead of surgery. they're also calling for more research. breast—implant illness is poorly recognised, to be perfectly honest. they haven't conclusively proven that silicone causes direct harm to the body's tissues, or causes these reactions, but there are not very many studies. naomi hopes speaking out will help other women who are suffering and may feel ignored.
1:27 pm
it's been like absolutely horrific. like the amount of pain and like suffering i've had to go through. and going to clinics and hospitals and doctors and saying to them, like, "i'm so ill." and they'rejust, like, saying it's nothing to do with the implants. anna collinson, bbc news. great britain's adam peaty has won the 100—metre breaststroke at the world championships in south korea — his third successive gold in the event. the 2a—year—old beat compatriot james wilby, with china's yan zibei in third. it comes a day after adam peaty broke his own world record to become the first man to swim the distance in under 57 seconds. gareth is bail is on the verge of leaving real madrid. the world's international wasn't selected for the side's preseason match against
