at grassroots level from the start of the upcoming season. india's threatening to boycott the commonwealth games in birmingham in 2022 — after shooting was dropped from the programme. hello and welcome to sportsday. england's cricketers have half the job done this summer after getting their hands on the world cup for the first time. part 2 of the mission is to regain the urn from australia with the first ashes test starting at edgbaston on thursday. the news coming out of the england camp today is that captainjoe root will bat at number 3 for that first test with joe denly dropping down to 4 in the order. henry morean‘s in birmingham for us as england go through their final preparations.
6:33 pm
two days to go until it all begins, five test matches to decide the winner of the ashes, the frustration of both sides is the english weather. both teams looking to get time batting in the middle and they have not had much outdoor batting because it has been running too much. but england face one of the best bowling line—ups in the world and their top order has not been firing in the last few weeks. they have made a shift to the order. and we now know the england captainjoe root will be up to number three. joe root will be up to number three. joe root will be batting at three and i will be batting at four. i feel excited about that. i was not fussed where i was batting it is just great to be in the starting 11. i have batted at number four before playing for kent and through my career so it was not the big issue for me.
6:34 pm
tha nkfully was not the big issue for me. thankfully the weather forecast for later in the week is better than monday and tuesday. edgbaston is a fortress for english cricket and they've won their last 11 games here because the formats. in 2015 they dominated against australia and they know that getting a good start to the series can be crucial in what most people say is likely to be a tight series across the five matches. let's speak to former england batsman nick compton who played in 16 test matches. is this a good move for england captainjoe is this a good move for england captain joe root is this a good move for england captainjoe root moving up to number three? i think time will tell, i think he would rather bat at number four but realised for this team to work he needed to go to number three. long—term i think potentially he will go back to number four or even someone he will go back to number four or even someone like jason roy will go to four but i think that is more a long—term solution. jason roy is not batting at number four right now and
6:35 pm
i'm not quite sure why, i thinkjoe denly has had more experience as an opener and i think that would have been a better move. and the longer you can keep the likes ofjoe root away from the new ball i think the better. they only have 11 caps between one, two and three so i think they are trying to break it up a little bit and get the best player in early. i can understand why they've done that and thinkjoe being the captain has made that decision. and michael vaughan said last night it is about picking the best tea m last night it is about picking the best team and not about combinations. do not worry about having too many boroughs. combinations. do not worry about having too many boroughslj understand having too many boroughs.” understand that and i agree. jofra archer has been fabulous in white ball cricket. i'm not sure england will want to playjimmy anderson and jofra archer together. but if they have slight injury worries, of course it is a huge summer and jofra
6:36 pm
archer has a lot more to do throughout the ashes. it is five test matches, i would like to get him in there as soon as possible and i think looking at the likes of anderson, stuart broad and chris woa kes, anderson, stuart broad and chris woakes, they are experienced campaigners and excellent bowlers but they are quite the same in terms of the pace. england i think i've lacked a bit of pace in the past and thatis lacked a bit of pace in the past and that is why the likes of oliver stone and jofra archer will come into the reckoning. i'm fascinated by the psychology of moving up and down the order, what difference does that make? it makes a difference, there is no doubt that as a batsman you want to get settled. it is about preparation time in terms of being the opener as opposed to number three. for meat number three gave me extra time to settle myself and perhaps watch a few overs and get ready. as the opener it is a different psyche and you do not know
6:37 pm
if you will be in at the first ball 01’ if you will be in at the first ball or the second innings and you start to count down the overs and try to work out how many balls you have left before night time or before tea. it is a different psyche and they say the opening batsmen are a different breed of character! i think it takes some getting used to and jason roy i think is a huge task on his hands. england have had this issue of not having a settled top order. looking at the australian bowling attack pretty potent. they have probably a slightly more settled bowling attack with a lot of pace. england need to try to get through those first ten, 15, 20 overs because their powerhouse is in the middle order in the longer the top order can bat the betterfor england's powerhouse. ben stokes is in magnificent form at the moment, jos buttler has been fantastic, and thatis
6:38 pm
jos buttler has been fantastic, and that is where england need to score their runs. but the top order needs to stick around somehow. i know rory burns has not looked to be in great form and struggled a bit of lloyds but he has played a lot of four—day cricket and for the other batsmen, many of them coming up from one—day cricket, but the real challenge will be getting back into the four—day test batting mode. can someone set out on the platform, but for a whole day and when you do the work required in test match cricket. rank you very much forjoining us. britain's nicola adams has become wbo world flyweight champion for the first time because her opponent arely muthino is injured and unable to defend the title. adams was interim champion and mandatory challenger to mucino ahead of their scheduled fight in march but adams was injured in the build—up. a chelsea fan has been banned for

commonwealth games in birmingham unless shooting is included. we are hopeful it won't get to that, we've run an open and transparent process, we haven't recommended shooting be added and obviously india do incredibly well in shooting and they're disappointed at that decision but we are hopeful it won't result in them not coming to the games in 2022. shooting was on the shortlist of potential sports but instead, the birmingham 2022 organisers chose women's t20 cricket, beach volleyball and para table tennis. this weekend marked three years until the start of the 2022 games. birmingham hosted a celebration in the city centre. they also released a new logo and promotional video showcasing the venues. with cycling already taking place in london, they didn't want another sport hosted outside the west midlands. to put all four disciplines of shooting on it would had to have taken place out with the west midlands,

down in surrey and there is local money that's supporting this event so there's clearly limited benefit to the west midlands from not having the event in the region. india's campaign now has the backing of their 0lympic association and birmingham 2022 has its first big problem. the new football league season gets underway in just 3 days but for two clubs in league one, their future looks unclear due to financial concerns. bolton's match at wycombe will go ahead on saturday— after they convinced the english football league they could meet the necessary requirements. not such good news for bury though — whose opening game against mk dons has been postponed with the efl stating they're not satisfied the club have suitable funds to meet the requirements of the league. it's another twist for bury who've been in financial difficulty since being relegated from league one in 2018. but there was fresh optimism in december last year when steve dale brought the club. it was reported he paid just one pound to take control.
6:42 pm
that optimism soon disappeared with players and staff not being paid. just five months after becoming owner, dale put the club up for sale — admitting the financial situation was far worse than he imagined. despite the off—the—field problems, bury were impressive on the pitch. they secured promotion and an immediate return to league one. just 22 days later — the high of achieving promotion had gone. the players issued a statement urging dale to sell the club. they said: "move on and stop negatively impacting everyone's livelihoods. players have gone from elation to utter dismay." and it would get worse two weeks later. manager ryan lowe chose to leave the club — to drop back down to league two — and take charge at plymouth. today — our reporter katie gornall has been at gigg lane — and can tell us what happens next. financial problems in football are nothing new but the situation is so dire here that the afl has taken the
6:43 pm
unprecedented step of preventing them starting the season and postponing their opening match against mk dons. bills have gone unpaid for months and i'm standing outside of the shop which is closed because there is no one to run it and nothing to sell. some of the nonplaying staff have even stayed away because they're not being paid wages. bury also hit with a 12 point deduction for breaking financial rules and they're not the only club. built injust rules and they're not the only club. built in just under mode also have a 12 points deduction but unlike bury they were able to persuade the afl that they were financially viable and did not suffer any postponement. speaking to the fans here they are fea rful speaking to the fans here they are fearful for the future of the club. no engagement with the fans or the media, just diabolical. what do you fearfor media, just diabolical. what do you fear for the future? they will go under. they've lost so many players but those that are still there deserve so much better. i do not know what the situation is. they
6:44 pm
have lost their livelihoods at the minute. the situation is grave, i have never been worried about the foot ball clu b have never been worried about the football club in its 134 year history, proud history, but i am today. they still have to provide proof of funding to the afl and do that by friday or they risk their second match of the season against accrington stanley being postponed for that the longer it goes on they also face the real threat of expulsion from the league and when you think that just expulsion from the league and when you think thatjust months ago fancier celebrated promotion, the mood now is very bleak indeed. bury‘s owner steven dale has relased a statement this evening. within it he says "we, as a club are saddened by recent events from a body who should have the best interest of clubs as its primary objective, clearly this is not the case. we thought we were finalizing with the efl on any outstanding matters that needed addressing, they contacted us giving us more time, we asked what further could be given, our cash flow was solid. i am unsure at this juncture where bury
6:45 pm
go when the body that should be there to help us works against us. we, as a club, promise you that we will challenge this injustice in whatever forum necessary." no response as yet from the afl. the football association is introducing ‘sin bins‘ at grassroots level from the start of this upcoming season. the 10—minute dismissals will be issued by referees as a sanction only for dissent, while shorter punishments will be applied in youth football. they'll be indicated by a referee showing the guilty player a yellow card and pointing to the touchline. it will be implemented up to step five of the national league system and tier three and below in women's football. tom elliott joins us on sportsday. tom's a referee development officer at the manchester fa. how big an issue is dissent in grassroots football? backin back in 2017 when the decision was made to enable the introduction of sin bins, 25% of all caution is seen in grassroots football across the country, so it is a major aspect
6:46 pm
that we want to try to improve if we can. and you think this is the best solution? we hope so and we are positive but the results of a two—year pilot scheme that has taken place across a variety of different leagues all over the country and we re leagues all over the country and were seen leagues all over the country and were seen a leagues all over the country and were seen a 38% reduction in dissent in those pilot league games and we help or something similar when it is rolled out across the season.” help or something similar when it is rolled out across the season. i know a lot of people at home will ask, yellow for dissent and yellow for foul play, does that make a red card? not necessarily, we will see a different process involved and it will take a bit of getting used to but i'm sure in time it will be second nature. this is something happening beneath the panorama national leagues, could it find its way to being implemented in the championship and premier league? potentially, the international football association board have only
6:47 pm
given national associations the authority to use it as grassroots level. so it will not be in the premier league in the nearfuture but i hope if it works positively and we have positive impact from it i hope it may be something they could consider in years to come. sounds like it will be a nightmare for referees. in the premier league you have a team of people behind you but sometimes at grassroots level it is just but sometimes at grassroots level it isjust one person. it will be a challenge and it will be something that as match officials we have to get used to. we would like to think the grass roots community support referees where possible and we will be sensible as we can in the implementation of the sin bin but there is plenty to be getting on with at the moment and we hope this will be second nature in seasons to come. and you have also got var coming infor come. and you have also got var coming in for the first time this season. coming in for the first time this season. 0bviously something people are going to be talking about in pubs and bars and in front of the telly across the country but it is
6:48 pm
not all good? i think for the football purists it will be a challenging season as we start to see these different things implemented. i would like to think we remain positive and it will improve the game that we all love so much in the next 12 months. but it will take some getting used to i must admit. we will have to get you backin must admit. we will have to get you back in to see how it is all going. american caeleb dressel was the standout swimmer of this year's world championships which finished on sunday. the 22—year—old won a record eight medals, with six of those gold and he also broke a world record which had been held by the sport's greatest ever champion michael phelps for 10 years. but who is the man behind the medals? bbc 0lympic sports reporter nick hope has been to meet him in florida. caleb dressel is a truly unique athlete both in and out of the water. you are so pretty! delete the

not always the case. three gold medals in one evening! people are saying you are the next michael phelps. i know comparisons are going to be made and there is no way to avoid that. people are free to say what they want but for me that is not what i focus on, to be the next whatever. i do not think it could be a comparison as he is a better swimmerand a comparison as he is a better swimmer and more talented than me. he is the best. comparisons with michael phelps are inevitable because the pair generally go out and win multiple medals at every event they compete in but someone wa nts to event they compete in but someone wants to be known as a swimmer in his own right and a new name to lead a new generation. if people want to pin it on me i would like to step up and be a leader. there are shoes to fill with regards to team usa and i hope i could be half the leader that they have been. how different does that feel? there's a whole different pressure on me and i
