we re to be. certainly not the news they were hoping to receive. they were told by the emergency services what was happening in a residence meeting before the media. this press conference has just finished entering this despite all the work that emergency services have done over the last 26 hours or the structure is still very critical and there's still a risk to life. there being advised not to go back to whaley bridge. and emergency services are looking at ways in which they can let one member of family back in for a short period of time to gather essentials, pets, medication, that sort of thing. what was interesting was over the last 26 hours they managed to reduce the water levels on the dam by about half a metre. but what they said here is that they are hopeful of saving the dam but they still need to lower it by several metres. take that water level below the problem that water level below the problem that a on that spillway before the

engineers can be confident that whaley bridge would be safe return to. we are not sure what the weather will hold of the next few days, but eve ryo ne will hold of the next few days, but everyone is very hopeful that they will be able to go back to the town. but no one was making promises. there was a lot of talk about days but again, it depends on so many things. they have got to get these extra high—volume water pumps in. it is tricky given that the layout of the area around, in derbyshire these winding roads and in lanes, they will be working hard to do that. laura thank you so much. following from that news conference we are keeping you up—to—date threats evening here in bbc news as that emergency operation continues. and as the police said tonightjust in the last few minutes, theyjust do not know how long that is going to take. we will have coverage throughout the evening here on bbc news so do stay with us for all of

defensemen. the first kick—off is nearly here is the football season returns for another ten months of replays, referees, and red cards. we look ahead at this weekend's action. hello and welcome to sportsday. so, day two of the first ashes test where worry burns went a long way at the top of the spot with that maiden century. they trail austria by 17 i’u ns century. they trail austria by 17 runs this evening and have a day of very good fortunes for england. adam wilde is at edgbaston for us. it is fairto wilde is at edgbaston for us. it is fair to say england had its fair share of luck today but rory burns and his century, look at nothing to do with that. he did get a bit of luck holly but it has been all about
6:35 pm
rory burns today. the day for the most pa rt rory burns today. the day for the most part belonging to england as you say 267—4 at stumps. the umpires called just a few moments ago. perhaps the edge of your seat drama, the nerve jingling excitement perhaps the edge of your seat drama, the nervejingling excitement that we enjoyed on the opening day but none the less this has been an enthralling day of test cricket. we will talk more about rory burns in just a moment. but there was a few wobbles early on as you say. england got lucky a couple times. jason roy dismissed early on and at that point when he was stretching back to the pavilion having scored just ten, things were looking rather worrying. they were worried faces around this edgbaston crowd. but from then on, the day has belongs to england let me bring in my guess, england legend who is part of the test match special team. thank you forjoining us once special team. thank you forjoining us once again. after that wobble, joe rich came in and i think that must be why he moved up to the study

the ship. if you lose two early, there is a bit of panic that spreads in the dressing. you move your best player up to number three, jason roy got out earlier, joe roots came out and say the ship. it's his best eight and he should say they're all serious. 57 for him. a great partnership for rory burns. it's very much been his day. it was a terrific knock. we use to crash bang walk cricket at the moment. but the australians are down. they bulled beautifully and got on the outside edge on numerous occasions. but he just stuck to his guns, had a bit of trouble early on and got the ball to turn and bounce of a bit but stuck to his guns any ground him down. a good opening batsman ship. england had been looking for someone at the top of the order to do this for quite some while now since alastair cook retired. hopefully they might have found somebody. he made them

wait for a while because he seemed to be in the ‘90s for an attorney. they were at 99 for a long time and then there was possibly he would get long... the empire would for the replay. but he got himself there. —— the umpire. all of those balls being thrown at you versus... it's nice work which he can now work on an ashes 100. that's what it is all about. people sit down perhaps with about. people sit down perhaps with a beer. and reflect on a job really well done. i want to get a few thoughts on a few other incidents that occurred today. under certain with jo root that occurred today. under certain withjo root early on. can you swing through what happened because i'm not sure i can work out. he was called out, he hit the stump stop at what he had the top corner of the bell. the bell lifted up and settle back down in the groove. it has been
6:38 pm
england's day. the austrians have bowled well and been a little bit unlucky but that is test cricket, you have to wear down the opposition. a little bit of luck but hopefully tomorrow we can come back and start building a substantial lead. —— the australians bulled well. given the state of the boers and the depleted bowling line—up, that we'd really important. —— given the state of the boulders. they can get themselves 100 on the kind of pitch. it is a flat, slow pitch. the australian boers will be tired. if england can bounce about and they could get a couple hundred ahead. —— australian boulders. a real good go withoutjimmy anderson. that will be england, so the mormons they can get in the bank, the for england. phil thank you very much. i let you enjoy things. getting into the weekend
6:39 pm
there are a few showers forecast over the weekend but to take something saturday at an ashes test match is always very special. this grant by me will be rocking tomorrow especially if england managed to stay on top holly. adam i thought the fan club was there for you! well done edgbaston, thank you. now to the women pause a british open. we have reached the halfway point with plenty of british interests still. charlie whole and bronte leaving the charge just two shots behind the leader and joker is there. this had been billed as the summer there. this had been billed as the summer of women sports and here at weyburn another wonderful story is on fully. three english women right in the thick of it heading into the we can ever impress rounds here in buckinghamshire. now the performance of the day, that belongs to bronte law. a blemish free round when she held five birdies and saw her finish with a round of 67 leaving her on seven under par. that's the kind of

charge of a major uefa men's competition event. glorious history today. a third successive victory in the five furlong sprint. and red bull's pierre was fastest in the second practise at the hungering grand prix. lewis hamilton was third faces as he tries to bounce back from last week's results. less tha n less than a week to go before the premier week transfer window closes and it is manchester united who are splashing the cash. set to break the word transfer record for a defender but their fee for weste r‘s record for a defender but their fee for wester‘s harry macguire. we think back to 12 months ago and united had shown interest in macguire back them but they said at that time the fee was too high and that time the fee was too high and that was less than this incredible figure now. what was the change?” think we saw with manchester united last season was that their need for a top class defender was so pressing that it was about time that they

finally push the boat out and went all the way to £80 million. it was talk that wester mack wanted even more than that so and that since united might feel that they got a steal. it's a big fee for a defender, still £5 million more than liverpool paid for virgil van dijk injanuary liverpool paid for virgil van dijk in january 2018 and many liverpool paid for virgil van dijk injanuary 2018 and many people will say that virgil van dijk now champions league winner is far superior to harry macguire. but we do know there is a premium for english talent, we know that macguire has starred in a world cup, united fans will be happy but many in the industry think this is astronomical money. it will be interesting to see how he settles in at old trafford as well. with six defenders already, do you think there will be a clear out at old trafford ? there will be a clear out at old trafford? if you look at their centre has, they have the likes of jones, and others. 0ne centre has, they have the likes of jones, and others. one is injured so he comes in at a good time. united

jonathan woodgate was held back. a great through ramage was book ended at middlesbrough, the hometown club thatis at middlesbrough, the hometown club that is now his firstjob as manager. for him his second tier is no step down. since i was about 30 yea rs no step down. since i was about 30 years old, i've always wanted to manage a football club. i am privileged to manage this club. we have prepared properly. we have organised, and we can't wait for the start of the year. he starts tonight at luton town. they are the championship's new boys promoted twice in a row. but the facilities here do not tell the full story. a new stadium is due in two years and in grahamjones new stadium is due in two years and in graham jones they have a man who coached belgium at the world cup. a new manager to match their ambition. the potential is the premier week. when i cannot tell you about but if you have got a brand—new stadium into— three years' time, and a fan

liverpool players might be a little more tired than most. the likes of mo salah and sadio mane have been playing in the africa cup of nations this summer. roberto firmino has been winning the copa america with brazil. the community shield represents the first piece of seven possible bits of silverware that liverpool can win this season. but traditionally the community shield hasn't ever been a big dealfor side. nobody told klopp as he takes liverpool into this game for the first time since 2006. it's a guinea pig and city. it's a good test against teams which are there. —— we have to make sure that we defend in a pretty good way because if you don't know well —— defend well against city, you could get a problem and that is not ideal. for city, how'd you build last season? they did the domestic treble. league, league cup and fa cup. champions league will probably be the top priority though for pep guardiola who is going to treat

a bit of a contrast. liverpool's preseason admittedly hit by those players missing has seen them lose to dortmund, sevilla & napoli. city in asia have found their scoring boots. weaker opposition admittedly. raheem sterling scored four in four games. so city in form holly. if that can be a thing before the season starts. liverpool haven't won the league for 29 years. winning the community shield may not be the best omen though. it would make sense really to do well in the community shield suggests you might have a decent season. we've been crunching the numbers though and only twice in the last decade has the side that's won the community shield gone on to win the premier league in the same season. city did it last year. manchester united back in the 2010—11 season were the last side before that to achieve the feat. not always the best thing to win the

and prove that he was right and that bringing in was the correct thing. that is where i get my enjoyment from, my buzz is from repaying the faith shown in me. against this moment it is great for everyone. but we have a job to do on saturday, thatis we have a job to do on saturday, that is the most important thing for me and our players and staff is big and sure we will give ourselves a chance of winning. we don'tjust wa nt chance of winning. we don'tjust want to... we want to win. let's not forget the scottish permission which sta rts forget the scottish permission which starts again this weekend. scottish champions celtic begin their bid to make it nine in a row in the premiership. they had been doing things to combat bad behaviour matches. this recalls the last season... chris mclachlan has this excessive report. the pictures that illustrate the side of scottish abode that most people would like to forget. going throwing, small bombs, and offensive singing categorise as unacceptable conduct. and last season it was on
