shooting in the texan city of el paso — and in dayton, ohio, nine people were killed and 16 people were injured by a gunman. the el paso shooting has been described by the state's governor as one of the most deadly days in the history of texas. the shooting happened at about 10.30 in the morning at a walmart store near the cielo vista mall, a few miles from the us—mexican border. police arrived at the scene six minutes later, and a 21—year—old white man was arrested at the scene. he's been named by us media as patrick crusius, who lived in allen in texas — about 650 miles away form el paso. police said a four—page document, believed to have been posted online by the shooter, espoused white nationalist and racist views, blaming immigrants and hispanics for taking awayjobs. the document was apparently published less than 20 minutes before police received the first emergency calls.

mexico's president manuel lopez 0brador said three mexicans were among those killed. 0ur correspondent sophie long reports. oh, my god. parents were shopping with their children when suddenly they were told to run. run, run, run! the walmart store was packed with thousands of people when a gunman started firing indiscriminately. 20 people were killed, 26 others were hurt. many, according to the governor of texas, sustained life—threatening injuries. on a day that would have been a normal day for someone to leisurely go shopping, it turned into one of the most deadly days in the history of texas. lives were taken who should still be with us today. 0ne white man has been arrested and taken into custody.
12:04 pm
he's been identified by local media as 21—year—old patrick crusius. police say they are examining the ppossibility that this attack was a hate crime. they're investigating possible links with a white nationalist manifesto that was published anonymously online, claiming the attack was targeted at the hispanic community. it has the nexus at this point in time to a hate crime. the fbi will be looking into that, with the other federal authorities. right now, we are looking at potential capital murder charges for this individual. el paso sits on the border with mexico. its population is more than 80% hispanic. it's become a focal point in the debate over immigration in the united states. this is someone who came from outside our community to do us harm, a community that has shown nothing but generosity and kindness to the least among us.

mass shootings are not uncommon here, exactly one week ago a six—year—old and a 13—year—old were among those killed in a gunman opened fire at a festival in northern california. but people are shocked that it happened here in el paso, considered to be one of america ‘s safest cities and they are shocked at such young, innocent lives were lost — and so many. but amid the horror and the pain and the great, great sadness, there are demands again for something to be done to stop it. 0ur sympathies go out to the families of the victims. democratic presidential candidate beto o'rourke, who is from el paso, linked this shooting to what he called increased levels of hatred and racism that is being seen in the us. he laid blame for at least part of that at president trump's door. president trump has condemned the shooting, calling it tragic, hateful and cowardly. sophie long, bbc news. police are investigating

whether a white nationalist manifesto posted online — which says the attack deliberately targeted the hispanic community — was written by the gunman. the ages and genders of all these people injured and killed are numerous and the age groups, the situation, needless to say, is horrific. it has a nexus at this point in time to a hate crime, the fbi will be looking into that with the other federal authorities, right now we are looking at potential capital murder charges for this individual. right now, we have a manifesto from this individual that indicates to some degree it has a nexus to potential hate crime.

earlier i spoke to cbs news correspondent chris martinez, who's been following developments in el paso. well, we are starting to piece this altogether. what we know, what we have been told is that the shooter actually started firing his weapon outside in the parking lot of the walmart, then he walked inside the store and just kept firing. we believe this was an ak—47—type assault rifle that he was carrying. we also know that the store, at the time, was packed with back—to—school shoppers. authorities are telling us there were more than 1000 people in and around this store when this happened. so, some terrifying moments for all of them, whether they were towards the front of the store when this happened or towards the back, where they could still hear those gunshots. just a horrible event for these folks to have to live through. and what is the latest condition check on the injured? obviously we know 20 fatalities, but a lot of people with quite serious injuries? right, what we know is that 26
12:08 pm
is the official number we have been told, 26 injured. we should point out that a number of them are still in critical condition this morning. so, there certainly is some concern that the death toll from the shooting could rise in the coming days, depending on how those folks are doing in the hospital. there are also some reports that perhaps because this is on the border with mexico, a border town here, that there may have been some people who were injured, but did not report their injuries, did not go to the hospital. so, 26 of the official number for now, and we will see if that holds in the next day or so. what about the man responsible for these shootings, and suggestions of a motive? the police chief was talking about the possibility of it being a hate crime? that's right, this is a 21—year—old man, and he wrote some sort of manifesto that was posted online, reallyjust minutes before the shooting began. they are looking at the manifesto very closely. they say there are some references there that indicate that he may have been targeting hispanics specifically in the shooting. and we also want to point out
12:09 pm
that this suspect is not a local resident here. he lives in allen, texas, just north of dallas, texas. it is a nine—hour drive. officials are saying that he actually drove nine hours from that part of texas to el paso, they believe, specifically, to commit the shooting. chris martinez of cbs news. victoria balderrama was shopping in the mall with her parents when the shooting broke out. they were in lockdown in the shopping centre for an hour before a swat team arrived to help them escape. we were there about 30 minutes when they announced they were closing down the store. locked the doors, which i didn't
12:10 pm
really think much of at the time and then they told us to huddle in the corner of the store and that's when i really started to worry. because i didn't think it was, you know, normal to be doing that. if it was something so minor. but they let us know that there was an active shooter inside the mall, on the second level and ijust went into survival mode, i mean, it was so scary being in that kind of situation. being from el paso, i was born and raised here, nothing like this ever, i mean ever, i would have imagined, could happen in my hometown. they were going to try and evacuate us through the exit ofjcpenney and so we waited for about an hour, when swat teams showed up and they ordered us to put our hands up and run through dillard's and exit. so we walked throuthcpenney,
12:11 pm
through the mall and out of dillard's where we waited in the parking lot. and we waited for about three hours, the police officers they told us to be patient, they were doing everything they could, trying to provide some shade. i mean, it wasjust a waiting game, i guess. we assumed they were looking for these active shooters. i just really have no words, honestly. because i've never been in a situation like this. and i didn't know how to feel, and looking at people around me, people were crying, panicking, and i really was just thinking the worst, you know, what am i going to do? how am i going to get out of the situation? making sure my parents were all right and we were going to be ok. you're just so indisposed to these people that have guns and are shooting at you, they are targeting you. and you know, there's a lot of talk that they were targeting because of, you know, the race, you know,
12:12 pm
most of the people here in el paso are hispanic. that was the view from inside the shopping mall, from victoria, one of those caught up in the shooting in el paso, in texas. they are waking up el paso, in texas. they are waking up in texas to the terrible news of what happened on saturday. police in dayton, in ohio, say nine people were killed and at least 16 wounded by a gunman who opened fire near the city centre. people were out partying in the 0regon district of dayton. a p pa re ntly 0regon district of dayton. apparently the gunman was trying to get into a bar, and when he was denied access he began shooting. he has also been killed. police say officers happened to be near the scene and were able to respond almost immediately to the calls.

matt carper from dayton police gave this update. we had one shooter that we are aware of, and multiple victims. right now, the shooter is deceased from gunshot wounds from the responding officers. we have nine victims deceased, in addition to that. and we have approximately 16 more victims hospitalised right now in unknown conditions. fortunately, we had multiple officers in the immediate vicinity, when this incident started. so there is a very short timeline of violence for that, we are very fortunate. well derek myers, a reporter for news net, has been speaking to the emergency services on the scene. we know that the gunman is laying dead on the sidewalk, about half a block from here. around him are several victims. some of those are those nine
12:14 pm
victims, some are inside ned peppers, some are on the sidewalk. as you mentioned, to viewers at home, there are 16 people at area hospitals right now. the death toll is expected to rise, unfortunately. we know that the scene is on a grid lockdown. police are going centimetre by centimetre, inch by inch, looking for any evidence that might be helping them connect the dots as to what this motivation was. when we asked the police chief what his motivation for the gunman might have been, he said he didn't know at this time, but they were going to piece it together and find out. the fbi's out here as well, as well as other local and state federal agencies helping the local dayton police department investigate. this is a low crime area. this is happening all over the country in the united states. but it does not happen here in dayton, ohio, the police chief said. so he is quite heartbroken to see this happen in his community. you can see it on the facial expressions of the first responders that are out here. they are really shaken themselves. they work the streets, they have been inside this

now from whaley bridge. this news came just over an this news camejust over an hour or so ago. presumably it is a reflection of the fact that the police are prepared for the risk of the weather turning very nasty? absolutely. we are at a bit of a turning point here, where we have known that there has been this met 0ffice weather warning over this afternoon, and it is in the lead up to that that the police have taken this action. you have to remember that there was a 24—hour period during which residents could pop back to collect any essential items for about a 15 minute window. 0ne back to collect any essential items for about a 15 minute window. one of the police officers we spoke to their did mention to us yesterday that would have to come to an end, that would have to come to an end, that they would have to be a stop to that they would have to be a stop to that so that they can focus their resources on the prospect, the potential risk of the dam collapse. because it is a finite amount of resources they currently have here, and it has required a lot of police

effort to manage the evacuation zone and manage the returning of the residents there to collect their items. so today, in the past hour or so, we have heard that they have decided to stop that and spend their effo rts decided to stop that and spend their efforts instead on focusing on preventing the dam collapse. because we do have that imminent warning, the imminent rainfall and thunderstorms that are expected to hit in the next hour or so, really. i what about the progress that has been made with the operations so far at the reservoir behind you? because we saw those images yesterday over the bags of aggregate, the sand and so on being dropped very precisely by the raf to fill that gap. has that, combined with the other work that, combined with the other work that has been done, helped to bring the level of water in the reservoir down enough? welcome emergency teams on the are very optimistic with the progress
12:26 pm
they have made. you can see behind me there are still teams there, and they have been there all through the night and they have not moved from there because they are relentlessly working to bring the levels of the reservoir down. as you mentioned, we had the raf chinook dropping ballast to plug that gap. they finished doing that yesterday, near the end of the day. and we did hear from them yesterday that the raf would be on standby if they were needed today, but there hasn‘t been a need for the tunic to return, and instead it has been more focused on reducing the levels. —— the chi nuke. to give you an idea, we had a update from the fire officer, saying they had managed to bring the water level from where it had been before down to about 65% of that. that is not enough, they said they need to bring it down to 25%. there is no need to bring it down to that level is because they are anticipating heavy

12:28 pm
and representatives of the unite union. those talks again ended yesterday without an agreement. they started again at ten o‘clock this morning and we have not heard a peep out of them yet. time is now running quite short, if a strike starting tomorrow can be averted. the strike, as you say, involves members of unite, who work in support roles such as engineering, firefighting, security work and passenger services roles as well. now, friday saw heathrow already proactively taking the decision that it thought 177 flights would need to be cancelled, before we even knew the outcome of the strike talks. airlines have responded to that in different ways. some of them already informed passengers on friday, virgin for example, that their flights will be altered, they would take off from gatwick instead. 0thers, altered, they would take off from gatwick instead. others, such as british airways, have taken the decision, i think, british airways, have taken the decision, ithink, tojust british airways, have taken the decision, i think, tojust see how things go and still haven‘t come as

far as we things go and still haven‘t come as faras we are things go and still haven‘t come as far as we are aware, told customers whether their flights would be cancelled. british airways said it would be informing people over the course of today. some people are getting a bit unnerved that they still don‘t know whether their flight still don‘t know whether their flight will go ahead as planned tomorrow or tuesday. katie, presumably the logistical practicalities of this means that evenif practicalities of this means that even if the strike were to be called off at the last minute, say ten o‘clock tonight both sides emerge and it is all warm smiles and handshakes, maybe i‘m being a bit optimistic, but let‘s say that happened, presumably by then the decisions will have been made? given that planes have to get back to where they were supposed to be, or com plete where they were supposed to be, or complete their journeys and where they were supposed to be, or complete theirjourneys and then come back to where they are supposed to be, the knock—on effect could be felt beyond just monday and tuesday? exactly. you would think that a fair amount of notice would be needed to make sure. i mean, this is britain‘s busiest airport. you can see behind me how often planes are taking off and landing as well. a very busy airport. any last—minute changes of
