9:00 pm
this is bbc world news today. i'm lewis vaughan jones. our top stories. 20 people are killed in el paso in texas when a gunman opened fire on shoppers in a busy store. police are treating the attack as a possible hate crime. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for the 21—year—old man in custody. just hours later in a second mass shooting, 24—year—old connor betts is identified as the man who shot dead nine people in a bar in dayton, ohio. he was killed by police. and more clashes in hong kong between police and pro—democracy protestors, ahead of a planned strike on monday.
9:01 pm
hello and welcome to world news today. two mass shootings just hours apart have killed 29 people in a weekend of violence in the united states. the first in el paso, texas — close to the mexican border — is being treated as a possible hate crime against the city's majority hispanic community. then, just hours later, a gunman killed nine people in dayton, ohio, before being shot dead at the scene by police. more on that in a moment, but first the el paso shooting which happened at a shopping mall. police are investigating whether he posted a document referring to a hispanic ‘invasion' of the united states online a short time before the attack. sophie long reports from el paso. a normally busy shopping
9:02 pm
mall, cordoned off. an investigation is under way, as people come to terms with what happened here hours ago. oh, my god. a gunman opened fire in what was a packed walmart superstore, killing 20 people, injuring at least 26 others. one white man is in custody. he has been identified in local media as 21—year—old patrick crusius from the dallas area. authorities are investigating whether this was a targeted, racist attack. they believe the gunman may have posted a white nationalist statement online, shortly before the attack. we are treating it as a domestic terrorism case and we're going to do what we do to terrorists in this country, which is to deliver swift and certainjustice. el paso lies right next to juarez in mexico. the border is just beyond those tall buildings there. the population here is more than 80% hispanic. the fact that the authorities are investigating whether this was a targeted, racist attack has led some to question
9:03 pm
whether the rhetoric being used by politicians here is actually making things worse. democratic presidential candidate beto o'rourke, who is from el paso, left the campaign trail to be with people here. he blamed the attack on the increased levels of hate being seen across the united states, and he told reporters president trump was in part to blame for that. we have had a rise in hate crimes every single one of the last three years. during an administration where you have a president who's called mexicans rapists and criminals. though mexican immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than those born in the country, he has tried to make us afraid of them, to some real effect and consequence. president trump has condemned the shooting, calling it tragic, hateful and cowardly. there are people in this country this morning thinking that president trump was happy by this. that is a sad, sad state of this nation. he is angry, he's upset,
9:04 pm
he wants it to stop. the focus of the investigation has moved 900 miles away, as officials search the suspect‘s home on the other side of texas. americans ask why this has become such a familiar scene. sophie long, bbc news, el paso. just hours after the attack in el paso, nine people were killed and 26 others wounded in another shooting — this time outside a bar in dayton, ohio. the gunman has been identified as 24—year—old connor betts. police say his sister is among the dead. here's our north america correspondent chris buckler. after a saturday morning of grief and violence in america came a saturday night that brought more of the same. nine people were killed and more than two dozen injured, all in a shooting that lasted less then a minute, as people were enjoying an evening out
9:05 pm
in the centre of dayton. they started pushing us out the back door, into the alley out the back because they didn't want us coming out the front because they didn't know where the shooter was. or how many there was. when you came outside, as soon as you hit the front street, you saw the bodies and you knew that this was different. you knew it was something you never thought of experiencing, never experienced. but this kind of attack has been experienced by far too many in this country — there have now been more mass shootings in the united states this year than there have been days. i think that the police and ourfirst responders have done an amazing job. clearly the question has to be raised — why does dayton have to be the 250th mass shooting in america? the gunman has been identified as 24—year—old connor betts. his home is being searched by police, who say he was wearing body armour, using an assault rifle and carrying more magazines of ammunition when he was shot dead by officers. bang, bang, bang, bang, rapid.
9:06 pm
you could tell it was a big gun and you're not going to get those from no handgun, you're not. as detectives struggle to understand the motivation for the latest murders in this country, in ohio there is a desire to focus on those who died on a night out with friends, rather than someone who came here to kill strangers. i've been speaking to a reporter for local national public radio station who has told me what is known so far about the victims of the attack. the media just received the names of the victims about an hour ago, so we are starting to learn a bit more about who these four women and five men were. all enjoying a night out in the oregon district in downtown dayton. and this suggestion that his sister was among the dead? that's correct. authorities did confirm that
9:07 pm
megan betts, one of the victims, 22 years old, is the sister of the suspected shooter, connor betts. tell us as much as you can of what the sequence of events was, how did this unfold and where? we're still learning a lot about that, right now. authorities are still investigating the exact sequence. thankfully, that neighbourhood in particular has a lot of cameras on all of the businesses so we should have a clearer picture soon. what we do know is that the street, as usual for a saturday evening, was very crowded. there was a very long line to get into a bar called ned peppers and as that sort of usual lining up to get into local venues happened, the suspect opened fire. and killed the nine individuals, wounded 27 individuals very quickly.

so now we have a situation where the police have retreated for some reason, maybe a tactical reason, back into these vans and they are leaving, but in the meantime, you can see the tear gas here. the tear gas is being repelled. here we see home—made slingshots and the like being used to fire back at the police who are calling warnings at them, these protesters, to clear... careful, careful. the police are trying to clear

away through the road. they are firing tear gas and are trying to push through the barricade so they can make it through and here they come again. we are being pushed away. it seemed like the police were going to leave but as you can see that has not been the case. they have decided to change tactics and come back very hard and they are pushing us away. so you can see what a battle zone hong kong shopping district has become tonight.

these rounds of tear gas being fired back to where the protesters are. and they are retreating in a cloud of tear gas, you can barely see anybody down the other end of the road. the latest from hong kong. let's take a look at some of the other stories making the news. a deal paving the way for civilian rule has been signed in sudan. the agreement between the military and the main opposition coalition sets up a transitional government, and elections in three years' time. a prime minister is due to be appointed later this month. one of the main leaders of the genocidal khmer rouge regime in cambodia, nuon chea, has died. he was 93. known as brother number two, he was second—in—command to the khmer rouge leader, pol pot. he was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity. during the 1970s, the regime carried out a policy of extreme repression that killed a quarter

watching bbc news, goodbye. hello, it's turned into another evening of drenching downpours for many parts of the uk. that actually sets the theme for the week ahead. it won't be raining all the time, but where it does rain could be very intense, could bring some further disruption from these showers and thunderstorms. this is the radar picture from a little earlier on. you can see the way in which the showers and thunderstorms really got going across the midlands up into northern england, parts of scotland as well. these areas still covered by a met office yellow warning, this is valid until midnight. the yellow warning extended fairly recently down into parts of lincolnshire as well. so these showers and storms continue to drift north—east as we go through the night. another band of showery rain pushing in from the west. some clear spells in between.
9:27 pm
it turns increasingly breezy from the west. it'll be quite a muggy night as well with lows of 13 to 16 degrees. so, at first glance, monday is looking like another day of widespread showers but actually, across england and wales, things will tend to improve through the day. you can see these showers pushing away eastwards, there could be the odd sharp one for east anglia and the south east, but then we see increasing amounts of sunshine. for northern ireland and scotland, here there will be some sunshine as well but still some showers breaking out, some heavy thundery ones and more persistent rain moving across the northern isles. temperatures range from 19 degrees in glasgow to 25 degrees in london. as we move through monday night and into tuesday, we bring this area of low pressure into the picture and where you're closest to the centre of the low pressure, across the northern half of the uk, that is where we will see the heaviest and most widespread showers during tuesday. some showers developing further south. at least a fighting chance of seeing some dry weather across southern parts of england and south wales. quite breezy here but further north
9:28 pm
the winds are fairly light which means the showers do crop up. it could be quite slow moving, which means some locations could see an awful lot of rain. and generally speaking, a cooler feel across the british isles. as you move through the middle parts of the week, another very showery day on wednesday but signs of things turning temporarily at least a little drier on thursday. however, that probably won't last long, some heavy rain pushing in from the west as we go through friday. and another area of low pressure taking up residence for next weekend, so it stays very unsettled.
