6:33 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. it is the week of football transfers, but did you expect the big one today? wayne rooney — the former england captain — is moving back to the uk in a couple of months. he's going to see out the major league soccer season in the usa with his current club dc united, before taking up a role with the championship side derby county as player/coach. england and manchester united's all time record scorer has joined initially on an 18 month contract — and he held a press conference a short while ago.. the opportunity to come back to england and play but also take up coaching roles with the club and

work under philip was too great for me to turn down. i'm delighted to be back and look forward to coming back injanuary and back and look forward to coming back in january and trying to back and look forward to coming back injanuary and trying to help the tea m injanuary and trying to help the team push forward and hopefully push for promotion. first and foremost i wa nt to for promotion. first and foremost i want to come and try to help the tea m want to come and try to help the team and secondly i want to try to learn from philip and his staff to gain experience for when i do stop playing and go into that next step. derby as a club has great ambitions and you have seen in the last few yea rs and you have seen in the last few years they have put a lot of money into the club to take that next step to get into the premier league. i felt it was a place where i could come in and use my experience and try and help them achieve their goals. well let's get more on this story now with our reporter reporter austin halewood.
6:35 pm
how did this come about? this is great for derby county at all happened so quickly. when rooney flying over just happened so quickly. when rooney flying overjust this morning from the states but it is confirmed that one of the most recognisable faces in the game will return to english football as a player and coach. you may remember him back in the early days when he burst onto the scene. it was with manchester united that rooney took his career to another level. he's their record goalscorer with 253 in 13 seasons at old trafford. he's still second on the list of the premier league's all—time goalscorers. now rooney says he's come to derby first and formost as a player, but having a legend like frank lampard take them to the playoff final as manager last season — derby will be hoping rooney could be the man to take them one better this time, after all he knows how to win.
6:36 pm
they tweeted as much — as well as all those goals he's won five premier league titles, three league cups, one fa cup, the champions league, the europa league and the club world cup. and it's safe to say that the fans are pretty excited at pride park. i watched derby for years and it is good for derby. everyone is getting a new shirt with wayne rooney on the back. no one would expect when rooney, manchester united legend, to come to derby. but it is happening! rooney! now rooney will see out the rest of the season in america with dc united, beforejoining up with derby injanuary. he's scored 23 goals in just 43 appearances, with 1a assists —
6:37 pm
and he even made it into the league's best 11 in 2018. that was with dc united. as for derby, they were 90 minutes from the premier league last season, sarah, and they're hopeful rooney could be the difference this time round. it is interesting to see the generation from 2004 move to the next stage of their career. another one announced today. i've got a picture of that golden generation of english football and a huge part of them have gone into coaching and management. david beckham is a bit of an exception, he now owns his own mls team in intermiami. but sol campbell, david james, paul scholes and gary neville have all had stints as managers. john terry is one of the coaches at aston villa — and rooney will have a similar role to him — but the most succesful have been lampard at derby last season and gerrard at rangers. 0f gerrard's 65 matches he's won 36 of them so that's 55 per cent.
6:38 pm
while lampard's won 42 per cent with 24 wins in 57 games. so derby will have been all the more appealing to rooney because of lampard's success there last season. he'lljust be desperate now for his own coacing career to start just as well. but we shouldn't forget he's coming to pride park as a player too. he's been involed in some of the biggest matches in world football, sarah, but if he makes his debut straight after arriving injanuary — his first match would be against barnsley. plenty more on the bbc sport website on that story. chelsea football club has apologised unreservedly for what it has called the ‘terrible' past experiences of some of its former players. today the club published the findings of damning reviews into historical child sexual abuse and racial abuse at the club. our sports editor dan roan is at stamford bridge.
6:39 pm
chelsea said today these reports would shine a bright light into the dark corners of the history of the clu b dark corners of the history of the club and they will help that this demonstrates finally that they are facing the scandal head—on after they were criticised some two years ago when revelations first emerged of the crimes of the former chief scout eddie heath and also merge the clu b scout eddie heath and also merge the club had insisted on a gagging clause in a compensation settlement with one of his former victims. two reviews were published today in the first centred on his crimes, eddie heath was at chelsea in the late 19605 heath was at chelsea in the late 1960s through until the early 1980s and he died in 1983. a report that was led by a child safeguarding specialist concluded that certain

adults at chelsea could have done more, but they may well have known of rumours of sexual abuse involving some of the former youth players and eddie heath. but they turned a blind eye and it was also critical of the former assistant manager here now of course is at crewe alexandra where he has been suspended as director for the last couple of years by the fa. the report said that he was made aware of complaints involving eddie heath but did not refer it on and he could have done more. he told the review he had referred the case up and he had not the only way try to smooth the matter over in a meeting with the parent of the boy concerned. but i still think that there will be questions over his future in the game as a result of this report. 0n future in the game as a result of this report. on top of that there was a separate review focusing on allegations of racial abuse here at chelsea and the report also concluded that gwynn williams the
6:41 pm
former head of the chelsea academy had racially abused a number of young players. he denies any wrongdoing. there was a third review into current safeguarding protocols here which said that they had been overruled since the time of eddie heath and chelsea apologised unreservedly to the estimated 40 victims across the two separate scandals. just a few days before the start of the season best serves the course is the latest reminder of the wave of child sex abuse allegations that have swept across football since they first emerged in late 2016. let's wrap up some other football transfer news from today.... arsenal have agreed a deal to sell laurent koscielny to bordeaux for a fee that could be worth 5 million pounds. the 33 year old centre back, who had a year left on his contract at arsenal, refused to travel on their pre—season tour to the usa and underwent a medical in france this morning.
6:42 pm
liverpool forward harry wilson is closing in on a loan move to bournemouth, after passing a medical at the club today. wilson spent last season on loan at derby county, making 49 appearances and scoring 18 goals. and stoke city have released boyan kirkitch by mutual consent after five seasons. the former barcelona and spain striker made a huge impact at stoke when he signed in 2014 but has been hampered by injuries over recent years. bad news today for england and james anderson, a day after their opening ashes test loss — the bowler has withdrawn from the team for the second test at lord's next week. the 37—year—old was passed fit for the edgbaston test despite hurting the same calf he had injured while playing for lancashire last month. anderson managed just four overs on the opening morning and did not bowl again. his absence is a blow for england. however there is better news
6:43 pm
for another english bowler. jofra archer has been proving his fitness after recovering from a side strain. he's warmed up for a potential test debut by taking six for 27 today in a hostile spell for sussex second eleven against a somewhat shell—shocked gloucestershire seconds. and he's since proved his ability with the bat as well. archer has scored a century at the blackstone academy ground, making 108 from 99 balls. you suspect australia's attack might be a little tougher though. it is expected that archer will replace anderson for the second test at lord's. the opening round of fixtures in the kia super league are under way. and after being throughly beaten in the ashes — english players will be joined by a host of international stars during the tournement, including many australians. yorkshire diamonds take on surrey stars at headingley this evening —

0ne star saying it will be strange to face some of the players she met during the ashes. you get to meet new people and play against players you have traditionally only ever played against. i am looking forward to it and looking forward to the challenge. it is a massive game and it will be a good marker to see where we are at. we had a couple of warm up where we are at. we had a couple of warm up games where we are at. we had a couple of warm up games but they are a good side and a good challenge. you want to throw yourself in the deep end and get amongst it alien. more of that on the website. now, with just 45 days to go until the start of the rugby world cup injapan — we're getting closer the final squad lists for the home nations. today — there was a big call by england head coach eddiejones

on two players in particular — that ahead of their match against wales on sunday — so let's bring in our rugby union correspondent chris jones. no ben te'o and no mike brown — how much of a shock is it that they've been dropped ? for players have been dropped, alex, a lwa ys for players have been dropped, alex, always a bit of a long shot has been left out from the 33 man group preparing to face wales on sunday for the ben spencer the scrum—half from saracens also not involved, this one a bit of a surprise as we thought he would be the number two behind ben youngs. and then mike brown, the most experienced english full—back who got a bit of a world cup lifeline when he was called into the training squad. again left out and then te'o, a favourite of eddie jones in the past three years or so also not included. eddiejones

claims his squad as soon as monday and surely if they had been in his plans they would be staying around in camp. so not looking good for them and another player not involved, danny cipriani. and in terms of the strength and depth, we see a number of newark names coming through that potentially could start against wales? absolutely some have come from left field, ruaridh mcconnochie remains in the 33 men in camp and could make his debut against wales on sunday. then a young flanker lewis ludlum who remains in contention especially if brad shields does not go. he could bea brad shields does not go. he could be a serious world cup belt from nowhere. and willi heinz the 32—year—old scrum—half from gloucester seems to have shot up the pecking order right up to number two
6:47 pm
behind ben youngs. he could well make his debut and even start against wales on sunday and catapult himself into world cup contention. so the first warm up game for wales and england on sunday and england then named their squad early on monday the 12th of august. thank you very much forjoining us. let's take a quick look at some other news today. carl frampton has had to pull out of this weekend's bout against emmanuel dominguez in philadelphia because of a freak injury. this ‘ornament‘ as he called it, was knocked over and hit his hand, breaking two bones. he tweeted these pictures of the offending item — more of a statue or column than an ornament. johanna konta has lost in the first round of the rogers cup in toronto. the british number one was beaten in straight sets by the ukrainian teenager daya na yastremska. it was the world number 14's first match since her quarter—final defeat at wimbledon. there's a surprise inclusion for former australia defender kate shimmin —

come back and be the victor at a major world championships. so for me that was most proud moment and for me as an athlete and coach because i was coaching myself. but london 0lympics always take my heart! now something a little different to finish. cape verde is surrounded by water but has never had an olympic swimming team. that's until they heard about three siblings from the usa whose mother comes from the island nation off the west coast of africa. they are now 75 per cent of the team for next year's tokyo 0lympics — and it all came about from a facebook post.
