for your time. thank you. now it's time for a look at the weather with helen willets the rain is still causing issues across parts of scotland and northern england. it has been raining persistently and quite heavily all day and even as we go through the last part of the evening and overnight that rain is very slow to ease off. we have already had a month's worth of rain in the last two or three days so clearly that is giving concern for further flooding. elsewhere, a quieter night. a cooler night, and that is a trend for the week ahead. temperatures will be a little bit below average. it does at long last look as if it will be drierfor central and southern scotland through the day ahead. some showers pestering southern england. quite heavy, but showers across central areas ease and instead they pick up in the west. on the whole it looks drier as we go into the start of the new week. it is cooler but the winds are lighter and there will be more sunshine around. it is just that clearly there is the scope for a few showers in some areas. some quite heavy showers at that. then perhaps a drier day on tuesday but more wet and potentially very windy weather due on wednesday,

hello and welcome to sportsday. the opening weekend of the premier league season kept the best ‘til last — certainly as far as mancester united fans are concerned. they've started their campaign with a bang — beating chelsea 4—0 at old trafford in what was frank lampard's first match in charge. adam wild was watching. at old trafford a new start. here were fresh faces. manchester united's world record signing, harry maguire. and for chelsea a returning hero in new manager frank lampard. these are clubs in transition. time, patience required. still chelsea's abra hams seemed in little mood to wait. at the other end, this was a chelsea defender getting too close. penalty the decision and rashford

getting united's season started. after the break, they would really find their stride and martial poked in a second for united. and just seconds later, a third. rashford calm, measured. united's new start never clearer than whenjames added a debut goal. 4-0. some start. 4-0, 4—0, you cannot really dream of more or expect more. then again, we are just working on improving as a team, finding a style that suits us, using the players we have, and today we showed that we still need a bit of time but it is coming, we are improving. we had the majority of chances. for 60 minutes we were playing well. and then other than the final third when we could have been more clinical, we hit the bar

and the post, ourfinal decision been more clinical, we hit the bar and the post, our final decision is probably for that slightly and we controlled the game, and then a sucker punch and the game changes completely. real lessons for us that mistakes will lose you games. elsewhere, arsenal got their campiagn off to a winning start, thanks to piere emerick aubameyang's goal, which proved the difference against newcastle, in what was steve bruce's first league match in charge since his appointment as manager. jim lumsden reports. not quite the reception steve bruce would have been hoping for. newcastle had spent £65 million on new talent over the summer but still there was a boycott by some supporters against the owner mike ashley. newcastle's shopping had yielded five new players but it was one of the regulars who nearly put his side ahead. the brazilian strikerjoelinton arrived for a club record £40 million and was immediately pressed into action. arsenal had also spent plenty, but began the game without any of their new signings on the pitch.
7:36 pm
a dull first half. aubameyang worrying the newcastle defence as arsenal began to dominate. minutes later he made the breakthrough with an eighth goal in as many league games. an efficient start to the season for the gunners, uninspiring at newcastle. i felt as if we deserved something. we had the better opportunities. there was not many in the game. there is nothing i can do about people protesting. they are entitled to their opinion. there is nothing i can do. all i can do is get a group of players together and formulate a team which the supporters can associate with and being one of them i know they will be coming back in their thousands. you cannot take that for granted, of course, but the club is unique, the support

for it is quite remarkable. we deserved the victory. we had control of the possession. we took those moments when we needed. we worked really well. it finished goalless between leicester city and wolves but var had a part of play once again. they had a goal disallowed after the video replay showed that leander dendoncker‘s header from a corner had rebounded to him off the arm off wily boly — much to the frustration of the wolves manager. everybody is going to speak about this. because it is a decision that they have to make, the referees, but they see it clear, that's no problem, but what was six months ago... six months ago it was a goal,
7:38 pm
so this is the issue of var. anxiety, we celebrate, and then the fans of leicester celebrate. that is not the spirit of the game. they are working on it. i am positive about it. i hope with time it settles. i am a massive fan of var today! i have said all along, some of it is going to go for you, and some of it will go against you. it has always been consistent. if it is a handball that leads to the goal then of course it is ruled out. thankfully for us. in the scottish premiership, jermain defoe's first rangers

jamie chadwick has become the first winner of the w series — the motor racing championship which aims to provide forfemale drivers into formula one. the 21—year—old from bath started from pole, but soon slipped back to third and eventually finished fourth behind race winner and fellow briton alice powell. however, that was enough to secure the championship by ten points ahead of dutch rival visser. there was a thrilling finish in moto gp at the austrian grand prix as andrea dovizioso edged out marc marquez. marquez claimed a record 59th pole position on his honda with ducati's dovizioso qualifying third. but the italian passed the world champion on the last corner of the final lap at the red bull ring it leaves dovizioso 58 points behind championship leader marquez with eight races left. britain's cal crutchlow crashed out. judd trump will become world number one tomorrow after winning the international snooker championship in china. in his first tournament since being crowned world champion, trump beat fellow

englishman shaun murphy by ten frames to three in daqing. along with his trophy, he'll take home £175,000 in prize money. jimmy anderson has been talking about the calf injury that has ruled him out of this week's second ashes test at lord's. england's leading wicket taker could only bowl four overs in their defeat at edgbaston last week. it felt great in that first few overs and then my fourth over didn't feel quite right so i went off to get it checked, and all the tests that they do on the calf to see if it's all right, just wasn't playing ball. hugely frustrating. you feel a lot of emotions — angry as well, having done all the work to get there. missing the ireland game as a precaution to make sure i was 100% for the ashes. and then for it to just...

not play ball, itjust wasn't happy. former world number one andy murray is to step up his return to singles by playing two more events in zhuhai and beijing. the briton had already confirmed he'd be playing singles at this week's cincinnati masters — seven months after fearing he might have to retire. he's added the tournaments in china in september and october to his schedule, but has not committed to playing singles at the us open — the final slam of the year — which starts at the end of august in new york. great britain have finished fifth in the three—day world team athletics championships in poland, but there was a bizarre mix up in the final event of the day. gb accidentally put the name of a shot putter — youcef zatat — down on the start sheet for the men's lixli00m relay instead of rabah yousif, meaning the team could not race and earned no points towards the gb total. it is absolutely cutting for the

athletes in particular. the simple phrase to use is that there was a technical error with the declaration process. we are exploring exactly what happened. obviously people involved with that process we need to protect but that is what happened. the athletes were absolutely amazing. they dealt with it, took it on the chin, immediately did a training session, as you would expect them to do, but that is the worst way to finish the competition. that's all from sportsday. more reaction to today's results on the bbc website, and we'll have more for you throughout the evening. now it's time for click.
