6:32 pm
archer's looking to star at lords again, he lit up the world cup final, can he drag england back into the ashes series? if you ask him he would definitely say yes! that is what you want, young guys coming in full of confidence. we'll be live in istanbul ahead of the super cup between liverpool and chelsea. this will also be a first for a major mens match in european competition. the first female referee, we'll hearfrom stephanie frappart. also coming up in the programme... a boost for women's and para—sports at birmingham 2022, as women's t20 cricket, para—table tennis and beach volleyball are included in the commonwealth programme.
6:33 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. hello there, we've got lots for you over the next 25 minutes or so, this time tomorrow we'll have a better idea what chance england have of getting back into the ashes series. they are one down after that heavy defeat just over a week ago at edgbaston. the second test starts at lords tomorrow, and we should see jofra archer win his first test cap, winning the match might rest on how many wickets he takes. here's our sports correspondentjoe wilson. here at lords the first question should be what has changed since the first test match in this ashes series. it is too simple to just say jofra archer, but he is inescapable. england did not name their 11 here today but we can imagine the point in this test match whenjoe root is able to unleash his fastest bowler. his new dimension, his archer. and what will happen then? potentially isjofra archer the guy
6:34 pm
who could win you the ashes? we will have to wait and see. you know, if you ask him he would definitely say yes! again, that is what you want, young guys coming in full of confidence. and belief in their own ability. and someone that is definitely not going to shy away from any challenge. so it's great to have characters like that in the dressing room. it feeds off the rest of the guys as well. and it's a great position for him to start in. jofra archer has never played a test match but of course he is well known around the world in other forms of the game. he has played big bash cricket in australia. so from an australian point of view is he really anything to fear? a lot of our guys have seen jofra archer or faced him, which is a plus. obviously it has been in white ball cricket but i think we have actually faced him in australia where conditions really suit fast bowling. so i think we have seen him at his fastest. guys know what to expect, they know how skilful he is and how good he is.
6:35 pm
so like most bowlers that play test cricket, there is going to be times where he is going to be a real threat and we will have to weather that. well australia rotate their bowling options for this test match with james pattinson having a rest. what has not changed since edgbaston, well steve smith will resume. we saw him practising here again today. he remains the outstanding batsman in the series. the outstanding test match batsman, you would have to say, in the world. and england will have to find a way of getting him out. joe root says maybe they lost a bit of patience in the first test match. he is expecting a big response from his team. well, if either side are going to win this test match, they may have to go about it quickly. the weather will intervene, if you can spot some sunshine and blue skies above me right now, enjoy it while it lasts. joe wilson, bbc news at lords. let's get more from lords now. who will come in for moeen ali who
6:36 pm
has been dropped because of poor form? former england spinner monty panesar has been speaking tojoe. i think ithinka i think a special spinner always has the plate because the game could go on forfour orfive days the plate because the game could go on for four or five days and you may need to spinner in the fourth and fifth day when suddenly there's better weather. so i think the spinner you always need and sometimes the non—turning ball on the green surfaces can also be useful. so spinners i think always important in all forms of the game and here you definitely need to play jack leach. i would definitely go to joe root and say get me on quickly, i want to bowl and steve smith and get out and then the seamers can come back on. i think the ball turning away, he not used to facing spencer early and if anything he will probably be on subcontinent test matches in india, bangladesh or
6:37 pm
sri lanka but in england they are preparing themselves against the seam. even with the ball swinging just one or two overs, bring onjack leach ali, his footwork may not be that great, get the ball to turn quickly and suddenly you have the key wicket at the moment it seems steve like smith against england. and you can follow that on the bbc sport website or the app. it's the uefa supercup tomorrow night. this is the match that sees the champions league winners face the europa league winners so this years edition sees liverpool take on chelsea and the venue is istanbul. let's head live there now to speak to jane dougal at the besiktas stadium. just a couple of days after very different stance to the season for liverpool and chelsea how seriously when they take this match tomorrow night? i don't think either manager would turn up their nose at
6:38 pm
silverware especially not early in the season put up a trophy is still a chevy and both would like another one i'm sure in a cabinet. but a term that stuck with liverpool, their training behind us at the moment and jurgen klopp said he was excited to have the chance for another european trophy. he may has got the taste for it after winning the champions league trophy and they've earned the right to be here underjurgen klopp by winning the champions league trophy. istanbul is a special place for this club as well, in 2005 liverpool won the champions league for the fifth time. not at the stadium of course but it is still a special place for them and somewhere they would definitely like to be successful again. as for chelsea anne frank lampard, it would be silverware in his second ever competitive match in charge of the clu b competitive match in charge of the club and he would certainly want to have that especially considering his first competitive match at the club at the weekend where they had a pretty bad result against manchester
6:39 pm
united, of course silverware this early in the season would boost morale for both players and for frank lampard as well. let's hear from both managers on the prospect of european trophy tomorrow. from both managers on the prospect of european trophy tomorrowm from both managers on the prospect of european trophy tomorrow. it is important as a club like chelsea that would give everything to try to win it because it means something to us as win it because it means something to us as another trophy, and for me it would be a nice start for me personally but more than that the billing for the players for the season coming billing for the players for the season coming up billing for the players for the season coming up that we can compete against liverpool and win a cup and that goes down then in our history. and go on from there. everything is prepared for the time so women need to make sure we're ready a final and make a few decisions about the line—up. it can be a bit unpredictable for the opponent as well because we do not know how they play. why should they know how we play. why should they know how we play. especially in the early stages of the season. so everything is
6:40 pm
prepared and we are here and let's go. you are at the women's world cup over the summer. we will see some familiarfaces from over the summer. we will see some familiar faces from the final in france tomorrow evening? yes, the referee and her two sisters officiated at the women's world cup final in france and they will be making history tomorrow night by being the first female to referee at immense european final. so her name is stephanie from part. she is already ground—breaking because in april this year she became the first women to take charge of a ligue one match in france. she is known for her calm demeanour. seen as someone who has been successful so far in the game and also incredibly fit. we we re the game and also incredibly fit. we were told today that she passed the men's fitness test for a referee so she will certainly keep up with the
6:41 pm
players tomorrow night. her team will be mostly made up of female officials. the fourth is a man. but an italian is the second assistant and michelle 0'neill of the republic of ireland is the other. the players tomorrow will be used to having sian massey has run the line in the fa cup in the premier league of course. but she has never refereed in england so this is going to be momentous. and the positive thing is that with all the numerous press conferences today anyone asked about it were all so positive about it and said it was about time we saw women officiating in the men's game. stephanie herself will be the focus of attention, she said that tomorrow will just be of attention, she said that tomorrow willjust be a game like any other and business as usual for her.|j think there's not a lot of difference. football is the same. teams play differently but as for
6:42 pm
men and women, for me it is the same because refereeing is the same, foot ball because refereeing is the same, football is the same. sol because refereeing is the same, football is the same. so i will do the same thing. this will be the 11th time at liverpool and chelsea have met in a european match. it will be tight i think because if you look back at the history, five of the matches ended in a draw, liverpool have two wins to chelsea's three and only one game won by a margin of more than one goal so hopefully it will be an exciting and dynamic final tomorrow. the super cup has not been held by an english tea m cup has not been held by an english team for more than 1a years and this time we know it will be flying back to england but we do not know if it will be heathrow orjohn lennon airport! there are some other important european matches this week involving british sides. celtic play the second leg of their champions league qualifier against the romanian champions cluj, it's 1—all after the first leg but they have home advantage tonight.
6:43 pm
the tie is finally poised from the away leg last week but plenty of confidence in the celtic camp. as for cluj , confidence in the celtic camp. as for cluj, not so much competent talk but more of that later for the pat bonner is here. will celtic finish thejob tonight? bonner is here. will celtic finish the job tonight? i think they will, ididn't the job tonight? i think they will, i didn't see much in cluj that celtic need to be overly concerned about they need to play an attacking type of game and focus on the goals. just keep an eye on cluj especially oi'i just keep an eye on cluj especially on the set pieces. the team are full of confidence of boys. — of course. they have good players up front and exciting players that play with a bit of tempo. theyjust have to be careful that they do not give anything to cluj to let them grow in
6:44 pm
confidence but i expect celtic to win this game tonight by two or three goals. there are comments coming from the cluj manager really talking celtic up. is that mind games 01’ talking celtic up. is that mind games or he barely does not fancy his chances? a bit of mind games of course and he has been around british football and he understands that the fans get emotional so he has been building up a bit. but also i think he missed out on the job i did not take the job, and i think he missed out on the job i did not take thejob, and i i think he missed out on the job i did not take the job, and i think he has one eye on the future. once you give up on celtic, that is it! any predictions? i think celtic will win bya predictions? i think celtic will win by a couple of goals. plenty of action across the bbc from this game. celtic against cluj, kick off at 740 5p on this evening for the bbc scotland. there's a big match at windsor park in belfast tonight. linfield play the second leg of their europa league qualifying tie. david healey‘s side are 2—1
6:45 pm
up after the first leg against montenegran side fk sutjeska. it is important we concentrate on us and what we can do and how well we played last week individually and collectively. the players are all well prepared for the game tomorrow night. it is a game that they are relishing i'm relishing and everyone involved in the club is looking forward to it. it is the challenge we will meet head—on. manchester city have avoided a transfer ban after admitting breaching fifa rules on signing youth players. the premier league champions have been fined £315,000. fifa said city breached article 19 of its regulations: "international transfers of players are only permitted if the player is over the age of 18." the future of bury football club remains uncertain, with yet another match being postponed. their league game on saturday against gillingham will not go ahead, after the football league said they did not receive enough
6:46 pm
assurances that the club has the necessary finances in place to run the club in the future. the club's owner says he is willing to sell to save the club but they face being thrown out of the league in ten days' time. let's have a quick look at some of the other headlines. tyson fury‘s next fight will be against unbeaten swedish heavyweight 0tto wallin. it will take place at the t—mobile arena in las vegas on the 14th september. he hopes victory in that will see a title rematch against deontay wilder. the winner of the champion hurdle, espoir d'allen, is likely to miss next yea r‘s race after an accident at his stables. he won the cheltenham race in march by a record 15 lengths. and the 15—year—old american coco gauff — who beat venus williams en route to the fourth round at wimbledon — has been awarded a wild card for the us open, which begins in new york a week on monday.

women's t20 cricket, beach volleyball and pa ra—table tennis will all be included in the 2022 commonwealth games. that means birmingham will be able to boast the biggest para—sports programme in games history and also more women medallists then men. jo currie reports. the games for every fan and every little star. that's the ethos of the 2022 commonwealth games. and plenty of little stars were taking their moment to shine at edgbaston this morning. helping to celebrate the news that women's t20 is to be included, along with para table tennis and beach volleyball. now england with a chance and palmer takes it! it made its debut at the gold coast last year and is set to return for birmingham. albeit without the sandy beaches. a lot of people expect that you have to play beach volleyball on a beach. but actually we have played in so many different venues around the world. for us actually some of the best tournaments we have played are in cities.
6:48 pm
so we have been in city centres, in car parks, we have been all around. so for us we're really excited to see what birmingham can bring to us. it's got so much to offer, so much to come... the inclusion of these sports means it will be the biggest power and women's sport programmes ever seen at a commonwealth games. and for the first time there will be more women's medals on offer compared to men's. however shooting didn't make the cut which has led to india threatening to boycott the event. shooting was never in the games, it is not a compulsory sport. it is an optional sport and it is up to the country that is hosting to decide whether they want to put it in or not. birmingham decided they could not have it in because of the venues that they had. we will be going out to india to meet them, to discuss it with them. and i am convinced that we will have india at these games. edgbaston has played host to some of the most memorable moments in cricketing history. and in three years' time it will be the venue used for all of the women's t20 games at the next commonwealth games.
6:49 pm
it is the first time the sport has been included and it is set to break boundaries. really excited. i'm hoping that the crowds turn up like they did for the world cup. and to have that atmosphere, to play in front of that kind of atmosphere is something that as players you really enjoy. birmingham stepped in as hosts at the end of 2017 after durban was stripped of the games following its failure to meet criteria. it will cost close to £800 million but organisers say despite the time constraints, they are determined to deliver the greatest games yet. jo currie, bbc news edgbaston. let's get more on one of those sports that has been confirmed, para—table tennis, taking the number of para—sports to a record 8 for a commonwealth games. let's speak to ross wilson, champion on the gold coast last year with team england. great news getting back in the

programme. absolutely and for me it isa dream programme. absolutely and for me it is a dream to be able to defend my title on home soil. i'm over the moon. there are four mental disciplines with 32 athletes taking part. 0ne disciplines with 32 athletes taking part. one of eight parrot sports. to have that many parrot sports included in the event is just incredible. for us to have another multisport major games in a calendar is just fantastic. what is multisport major games in a calendar isjust fantastic. what is it like to bea isjust fantastic. what is it like to be a para— athlete when your sport is taking part right next to the commonwealth games as well, there is a fantastic feeling of inclusion? absolutely. as with most of the table tennis team and i've grown up of the table tennis team and i've grown up with them, alongside them, and normally we will not compete alongside each other itself in the commonwealth games we get to do that and it is a fantastic experience. that has to help you as well as an

athlete. completely, ithink that has to help you as well as an athlete. completely, i think it helps just
