the headlines this evening: a great partnership between lacazette and aubameyang saw arsenal secure a second win of the season. after being hit twice — steve smith goes on to top score for australia and it's england who're now in pain — struggling with the bat at lords. officially number one! wales‘ victory over england put them at the top of the rankings and bodes well for the world cup. also coming up on the programme: we round—up the home nations action on day two of the men's eurohockey championships in antwerp. the canoeist who crowdfunded to have her own leg amputated and is now hoping for success at the world championships in hungary.
6:32 pm
we begin with a promising start to arsenal's premier league campaign. they've won their opening two fixtures for the first time in a decade. in a new look team where david luiz made his arsenal debut — they narrowly beat burnley 2—1 at the emirates with the arsenal manager, unai emery saving particular praise for his new signings. rhia chohan reports. this is one of those feel—good fixtures for arsenal, they have never failed to beat burnley at the emirates and with new faces, dani ceballos and david luis, they were hoping to maintain that record. early on, alexandre lacazette took advantage of dismal defending holding off eric peters. strength and pure determination from the frenchman crafted an early lead but it was just before the break when burnley was able to cut open the defence to level, ashley barnes continuing his run of the season.
6:33 pm
in the second half pierre—emerick aubameyang elicited the sharpest reaction from nick pope. this attack allowed the victory to be settled and the sky—high moment arsenal fans love. it is the first time in ten years the gunners have won their first two opening premier league games. on loan from real madrid he walked off with a plausible. feel—good indeed. the first match was good because the team won and they helped us really well, and good for danny and pepe and the young players, another step ahead and positive for us. at the end of the day, we walked it.
6:34 pm
it was a dangerous area, it happens and they have got some good players as everyone in the premier league has. they took it straight on and smashed it in the corner, that can happen. you want to learn from these details but i thought overall it was a good performance. in the other premier league matches, newcastle are struggling under new manager steve bruce and they might be temporarily be top of the league but there was a howler in liverpool's match. the late game is manchester city against tottenham at the ethiad. joe lynskey has more details for us. yeah let's waste no time in getting straight we yeah let's waste no time in getting straight because the match is at half time. you can see the city is leading to —
6:35 pm
one at the break. raheem sterling opened the scoring. sergio aguero made it 2—0, but crucially for spurs, erik lamela has pulled one back to keep them in touch. city are on 15 wins in a row in the premier league and that 5—0 thrashing of west ham would've sent a shiver through the rest of the league. but mauricio pochettino is the last man to get the better of pep guardiola — famously on this ground in the champions league last season. and we are all set up for a fascinating second half there, which is now under way. well what of the side who want to catch city this year — because liverpool were playing in the super cup in istanbul on wednesday. this is where they were before that game at stumble over in the turkish capital, a long way away from st

mary's. they've had an eight hour round trip, a very late finish and two days off before an away match at southampton today. butjurgen klopp‘s side have got an important result, 2—1 it finished, liverpool's iith straight premier league. and this was thanks to the front players who are so often so important for them — sadio mane brought a slow and frustrating first half to life with a brilliant curling strike to make iti—o, before roberto firmino fired in low to make it 2—0. now all the talk before this match was on liverpool's goalkeeping crisis — they thought they may have to give their emergency third choice keeper a game today, but adrian, their second choice was passed fit to play. he made an absolute howler though to let southampton back into the match, passing the ball straight to their striker danny ings to score in an empty net.
6:37 pm
it made for a nervy last few minutes for last year's runners—up. liverpool came through to win 2—1 and in the circumstances, the travelling, the late finish they had on wednesday night and the test they had against southampton who they knew would be fighting for their lives, this could turn out to be a very important result. it was so difficult for us today and we showed from the first and second, nobody is tired. we came here to win the game so we have to fight like crazy. before the game, i think most of the headlines are already written and everyone is prepared for it, it looked like the biggest banana skin in history. we didn't give up, we believed in what we were doing and i think finally came back with one having
6:38 pm
then tried everything and yeah, it isa then tried everything and yeah, it is a pity. norwich city got a harsh lesson to start life in the premier league — they were beaten 4—1 by liverpool in the opener last week, but you can see today daniel farke's side have their first win on the board in their first home match, 3—1 against newcastle. we'll get to the away side struggled shortly. and the man who was so often their hero last season was their hero today. this is teemu pukki scoring the first of what would be a hat—trick. he scored 30 goals last season. a brilliant volley followed by two well taken finishes. he has had an extraordinary rise
6:39 pm
since hejoined norwich at he has had an extraordinary rise since he joined norwich at the start of last season. he was released by a danish site and this was his first hat—trick. he's a finland international who was on the shortlist for the finnish sports personality of the year injanuary, he didn't quite win it but he was on the left. ——list and now he's made the perfect start to premier league life — the first top flight hat trick scored by a norwich player since 1993. this is exactly the start newcastle didn't want though — there were boycotts ahead of their first home match, they've now lost their first two fixtures, and they have spurs and liverpool to come next. we knew it was going to be
6:40 pm
difficult, a newly promoted team with their tails up in the first game back and we didn't do enough to get anything from it so we have to accept that, the whole performance with and without the four certainly wasn't the level which was required. we worked a lot in technical terms and try to influence the game as much as possible. in the first half we we re even much as possible. in the first half we were even more brilliant than the first half. in the second half we we re first half. in the second half we were also effective without any doubt. well, like norwich astno villa were playing their first home match back in the premier league. so much excitement at villa park before taking on bournemouth, but you can see they witnessed a defeat on villa's return. now villa's issue in the first few weeks of the season mayjust be how they get the best
6:41 pm
from the host of new signings they've made in the summer — one of them is their goalkeeper tom heaton but he was at fault and gave away a penalty in the first half which josh king converted for 1—0. now bournemouth too have strengthened in the close season, and they're very excited about this man — harry wilson on his debut today — scoring brilliantly from distance to make it 2—0. it was a goal that will come to no surprise of derby county. exactly the sort of long range effort wilson's been known for in his matches for those teams. villa did get a well taken goal of their own back to make it 2—1 through douglas luiz. but even with that hairstyle it wasn't enough to brighten up villa's afternoon. they, like newcastle, have two defeats out of two.
6:42 pm
two big mistakes and to score two goals in the first ten minutes, very difficult in this league to come back to that but credit to the lads, they kept trying, kept knocking on they kept trying, kept knocking on the door, they had some chances. more possession, more opportunities but you are always chasing the game at 2-0 but you are always chasing the game at 2—0 and it allows them to slow the game down. i'm still not sure about that player staying on the pitch, he had yellow cards. we knew the importance of the game, really pleased at the start of the match but we knew the game was going to be hugely important. aston villa got it and we were pleased with how we defended, we learnt from last week. so confirmation of those results, including a 1—0 win
6:43 pm
for everton against watford, and a 1—1 draw between brighton and hove albion and west ham. four points for brighton from their first two games, in manager graham potter's first season in the premier league. some interesting var calls to have a look at in that game in match of the day tonight too. some long delays between confirmations of decisions. it's that late match at the bottom though we're keeping our eyes on in the next hour. you get the feeling already this is a big match for spurs — it is still too— one at the moment. totte n ha m it is still too— one at the moment. tottenham have spent some money in the transfer window this summer and we know from last season, any ground you lose a manchester city, you don't get many chances to get that back. an interesting game ahead. early days on this season but

hong kong's ung on yee at the crucible in sheffield. it's the first time since 2003 that women have played at the iconic venue. there is something else rather big going on at the moment, isn't there? it has been a fascinating fourth day of the second test at lord's. and yet again it's steve smith who is the big talking point. the australian was hit twice during his innings, leading to him leaving the field with concerns about concussion but remarkably smith returned. he was out for 92, australia all out for 250, which meant england had a slender lead but their second innings has not started well. michael redford reports. another day of ashes cricket, another day of steve smith making the headlines, although perhaps not

thanks to this own goalfrom henry weir. but, after swapping their goalkeeper for an extra attacker, england snatched a draw. james gall with the equaliser withjust over 2 minutes remaining. both teams are back in action tomorrow. five to go and being in that position, it is a per position —— a position, it is a per position —— a position we are familiar with the disappointed we cannot pull through. really pleased with their first run out, it took us a a while to get going and it wasn't a complete performance. patches of good stuff, i think we got better as the game went on and became more confident with the ball. scotland had a nightmare start to their tournament though. they were thrashed 9—0 by germany in their opening match in pool b. the eight—time winners were 4—0 up at half time and continued to dominate with 3 more

for great britain's hope gordon, it'll mark the next step on a remarkable journey. three years ago, suffering from an agonising condition, she chose to have her leg amputated — and it's transformed her life. ben croucher has the story. so, when i was 12, i went to school one day just absolutely fine, just your average kid. during school my leg, essentially, just stopped working. eventually, i got diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome, so i went through nearly ten years‘ worth of treatment and most of them actually made my life worse, not better. eventually, i elected to have my leg amputated. we often hear how athletes make tough decisions. hope gordon knows all about this. three years ago, she took the drastic decision to have her leg removed after it had been causing her constant pain for a decade. the nhs does not offer amputation as a treatment for hope's condition because there's no medical guarantee that it will stop the pain, but hope was willing to that risk, so she raised money for a private
