the incredible sport of speed climbing. it might be early days in the season but getting any points off premier league champions manchester city is vital for teams aiming for the title. that is what spurs did today with a 2—all draw at the etihad but under rather controversial circumstances with var playing a major part in the final few minutes of the game. ben croucher reports. manchester city fans arrive to matches these days full of confidence. normally a match of when rather than if they take the league,

in the early match arsenal's premier league campaign is going well. they've won their opening two fixtures for the first time in a decade. in a new look team where david luiz made his arsenal debut — they narrowly beat burnley 2—1 at the emirates with the arsenal manager, unai emery saving particular praise for his new signings. rhia chohan reports. this is one of those feel good fixtures for arsenal, they have never failed to beat burnley at the emirates and with the new faces they were hoping to maintain that record. early on, alexandre lacazette took advantage of dismal defending holding off eric peters. strength and pure determination crafted an early lead but it was just before the break when burnley was able to cut open the defence to level, ashley barnes continuing his run of the season. in the second half pierre—emerick aubameyang elicited a reaction from nick pope. this attack allowed the victory to be settled and the sky—high
7:35 pm
moment arsenal fans love. it is the first time in ten years the gunners have won their first two opening premier league games. on loan from real madrid he walked off toa on loan from real madrid he walked off to a standing ovation for that brilliant midfield display. feel good indeed. the first match was good because the team won and they helped us really well, and good for danny and pepe and the young players, another step ahead and positive for us. at the end of the day, we walked it. it was a dangerous area, it happens and they have got some good players as everyone in the premier league has. they took it straight on and smashed it in the corner, that can happen. you want to learn from these details but i thought overall it was a good performance.
7:36 pm
in the other premier league matches, newcastle are struggling under new manager steve bruce and there was a howler in liverpool's match. joe lynskey has more details for us. i think we need a special word for ben croucher getting that report in on time. absolutely breathless stuff we have had with that manchester city finish. well, what of the side who want to catch city this year — because liverpool were playing in the super cup in midweek — one of their rewards for winning the champions league. not quite so welcome though was that match went on for 120 minutes, plus penalties, and it was played in istanbul, an 8 hour round trip away. they had just two days off to get ready for this match at st mary's
7:37 pm
where they were playing against southampton. but they got an important result. 2—1 it finished, liverpool's11th straight premier league. and this was thanks to the front players who are so often so important for them — sadio mane brought a slow and frustrating first half to life with a brilliant curling strike into the top corner to make it 1—0, before roberto firmino fired in low from inside the box to make it 2—0. now all the talk before this match was on liverpool's goalkeeping crisis — they thought they may have to give their emergency third choice keeper a game today, but adrian, their second choice was passed fit to play. he made an absolute howler though to let southampton back into the match, passing the ball straight to their striker danny ings
7:38 pm
to score in an empty net. it made for a nervy last few minutes for last year's runners—up. liverpool though did hold on and in given the circumstances, the travelling and the test they had today, this could be an important one. it was so difficult for us today and we showed from the first and second, nobody is tired. we came here to win the game so we have to fight like crazy. before the game, i think most of the headlines are already written and everyone is prepared for it, it looked like the biggest banana skin in history. after 2—0 we didn't give up, we believed in what we were doing and i think
7:39 pm
finally came back with 1—2 then tried everything and yeah, it is a pity. spurs city and liverpool will all be vying for the premier league title at the top of the table. one of the sides probably contesting down at the bottom because norwich city got a harsh lesson to start life in the premier league. they were beaten 4—1 by liverpool in the opener last week, but you can see today daniel farke‘s newly promoted side have their first win on the board in theirfirst home match, 3—1 against newcastle. we will get to the away side struggles in a moment. for norwich the man who was so often their hero last season was their hero today. this is teemu pukki, scoring the first of what would be a hat—trick. a brilliant volley followed by two well taken finishes. now, pukki scored 30 goals in all competitions
7:40 pm
for norwich last season, but this was his first hat—trick for the club — all this for a player who was released by the danish side brondy at the start of last season. he's a finland international who was on the shortlist for the finnish sports personality of the year injanuary, and now he's made the perfect start to premier league life — the first top flight hat trick scored by a norwich player since 1993. a brilliant start for norwich. this is exactly the start newcastle didn't want though — there were boycotts ahead of their first home match, they've now lost their first two fixtures, and they have spurs and liverpool to come next. we knew it was going to be difficult, a newly promoted team with their tails up in the first game back and we didn't do enough
7:41 pm
to get anything from it so we have to accept that, the whole performance with and without the ball certainly wasn't the level which was required. we worked a lot in practical terms and try to influence a game as much as possible. in the first half we we re even as possible. in the first half we were even more brilliant than the second half so it was like a thunderstorm with thunder and lightning. lightning crashed in the first half, the second half was also affected. —— first half, the second half was also affected. — — effective. well, like norwich aston villa were playing their first home match back in the premier league. so much excitement at villa park before taking on bournemouth, but you can see they witnessed a defeat on villa's return. now villa's issue in the first
7:42 pm
few weeks of the season it's going to be integrating the number of new signings they made over the summer. one of them is their goalkeeper tom heaton but he was at fault and gave away a penalty in the first half which josh king converted for 1—0. now bournemouth too have strengthened in the close season, and they're very excited about this man — harry wilson on his debut today — scoring brilliantly from distance to make it 2—0. when you watch this go back, fans of derby county and wales national team, this of goal will not be surprising because it is the long range effort wilson is known for. he has such a clean strike on him. villa did get a well taken goal of their own back to make it 2—1 through douglas luiz. but even with that hairstyle it wasn't enough to brighten up villa's afternoon.
7:43 pm
they, like newcastle, have two defeats out of two. two big mistakes and to score two goals in the first ten minutes, very difficult in this league to come back to that but credit to the lads, they kept trying, kept knocking on the door, they had some chances. more possession, more opportunities but you are always chasing the game at 2—0 and it allows them to slow the game down. i'm still not sure help fill billings stayed on the pitch. he had yellow cards. we knew the importance of the game, really pleased at the start of the match but we knew the game was going to be hugely important. aston villa got it and we were pleased with how we defended, we learnt from last week.
7:44 pm
so confirmation of those results, including a 1—0 win for everton against watford, and a 1—1 draw between brighton and hove albion and west ham. that was another match that saw a couple of controversial dar calls. four points for brighton from their first two games, in manager graham potter's first season in the premier league. manchester city and tottenham hotspur, this var coal is going to be one remembered for a long time. it took three minutes for the ball going in to not being given and a really controversial end to a big match today which finished 2—2 and you wonder what effect that could have, what those dropped points
7:45 pm

7:48 pm
