6:33 pm
hello, i'm sarah, live at glen eagles in scotland, where in 13 hours' time, europe will begin their quest of trying to wrestle back via solheim cup from usa. and placed her as has been a come back clean before. she will be back on to where next year at the age of 36. also coming up in the programme... we hear from jason kenny, we hearfrom jason kenny, he will be chasing records and gold medals in tokyo next year. ijust next year. i just really enjoy the journey and the trip along the way. and hopefully we come out of it with some metals. good evening, and welcome to sportsday. an awful lot coming up you on the programme this evening, including a
6:34 pm
concussion programme this evening, including a concussion controversy programme this evening, including a concussion controversy surrounding antonyjoshua's last concussion controversy surrounding antony joshua's last fight. but let's start at the oval, were in good's cricketers have been on the ropes for much of the afternoon, they were put into back at the final ashes test. they have just walked off on 271 for eight. 0ur sports correspondentjoe wilson is at the ground, evening to you joe, solid enough start, but pretty patchy in the afternoon until that late silver service from the butler. very good. i think it's been a full day here at the oval, which you know, let's be thankfulfor oval, which you know, let's be thankful for that, as we stand here almost in mid—september. i thank you are right, for some of the day, it felt like a kind of weary, kind of familiar ashes story for england. considering that australia won the toss, they decided to bowl, and wouldn't have expected to take ten wickets in a day's play rather than eight. let's take you through some of the key moments of the day. catches were a big theme. so here we are, england batting, their opening
6:35 pm
stand today of 27 wasn't bad, but in the context of what we have seen so far in the ashes throughout the summer, and you will tell me whether you can actually see any of these pitches now, and here isjoe danley, if you look at steve smith taking vest. it takes him a while to take the catch is, but that was danley gone for 14. now, what happened then is australia gave england a bit of an opportunity, not least because they dropjoe route a total of three times. peter settle drop that one much to the great hilarity of the crowd. so joe much to the great hilarity of the crowd. sojoe root therefore had an opportunity actually after that, he got stuck at edits, we see his wickets, there's no need for catches if he can do that. now that is a comprehensive dismissal. and after that, really, australia took hold. thanks to mitchell marsh, interesting selection i thought they picked the ron mitchell. this is mitchell marsh, got the ball to move around, took a couple of lbw is, he got four wickets in total for
6:36 pm
mitchell marsh. that looked like australia were going to wrap up the day into joss australia were going to wrap up the day intojoss butler. as the day turned into evening, he had some fun. went into that one day mode, and had a situation that at the close of the day, rather than england being all out, we had butler still going. so let's just anticipate them coming back tomorrow morning and batting until lunch, hey? let's do that. it's difficult to know until we get australia having a go on exactly what is par for that wickets, but there were a few raised eyebrows when tim payne won the toss, and said oh, we are going to bowl first, but i suppose once you check steve smith into the factor at some point, perhaps tomorrow, then that skews all the australian batting averages, doesn't it, really? yeah, we have to say, i think whatever happens in this match, when we analyse what's happened this summer, when you have one guy who is averaging 134 and in ashes series, in a series where
6:37 pm
batsmen have generally struggled, where bowlers have been on top of them, of course that's decisive, and i england do differently tomorrow? joe route said yesterday, they have different plans, different ideas to bowl steve smith out to get him out, cheaply. 0f bowl steve smith out to get him out, cheaply. of course they have a left arm or bowling at him, maybe that is something for england to cling to tonight. but look, they get past 300, and that is a little bit of scoreboard pressure on the australian's in general and steve smith in particular. certainly that's joe was smith in particular. certainly that'sjoe was in our correspondent their life from the oval, many thanks indeed, england closing at 271 for eight on the first day of the final ashes test. in the last hour, we've had the opening ceremony for the solheim cup and we have had the pairings for the opening round of foursomes tomorrow morning, let's head livbe to gelneagles now and speak to sarah mulkerrins, (live 0s)sarah , we've had and speak to sarah mulkerrins. sarah, we've had the rzzmatazz and we're just about set, and europe can go about trying to stop the usa
6:38 pm
making it three in a row. yes, i don't know if you can hear the song in the background, as the last stragglers in that opening ceremony last stragglers in that opening ceremony make their way out and celebrate. i know the europeans were definitely wanting to be celebrating on home soil, come sunday. and right alongside me, that is the first fairway over there. this is the 18, and really, the scene is set for what could be a brilliant solheim cup over the next three days here at gleneagles in scotland. a magnificent occasion, for the best women golfers in america and in the usa, but there is no doubt that the americans do have all the pedigree in this event. ten wednesday europe's five. i know there's a lot of talk in the build—up to this, the fa ct of talk in the build—up to this, the fact that the americans have so many rookies, half of their team our first—timers. europe are keen to get on with that. —— more experienced tea m on with that. —— more experienced team they have coming into this. but, the americans under this captain, julie, have won the last
6:39 pm
document additions. however, may be katrina matthew, considering she is captaining this site for the first time, she's a nine time player, she is from scotland, she is captaining for the first time here on home soil. she might be taking some inspiration from the fact that the last time, two times it was held here in scotland, it was the europeans who were the winners. take a look at this. back in scotland for the first time since 2000 come about solheim cup attracts fans from all over europe and the united states. the tournament will be worth over £2 million for the scottish economy, and gleneagles has an iconic history, including a ryder cup here five years ago. jack nicholas, who designed the centenary course described it as the best parcel of land he has worked on. the tea m ca pta i ns parcel of land he has worked on. the team captains are also icons in the game it, julie inkster has skippered the us to victory in the last two additions, and scott katrina matthew has played in nine solheim cups.
6:40 pm
this is the biggest solheim cup i've been at the first tee, the tented village, the stage, i mean when you first see it, it'sjust quite overwhelming. i can't imagine what the ricky's mustang. we might think it's great for the girls to be able to play in atmosphere. and this many people. and to showcase really what women's golf is really all about. the us have six rookies on their side, and other younger team, but they are relaxed and up for the ahead. the great thing about having so many rookies is that, you know, they are young. they have no fear. because they don't know what to expect. they don't know anything. but we don't see it as anything negative. i think we have the strongest team we have ever had, so we are all super confident in each other. and we really believe we can do this, andl we really believe we can do this, and i almost feel like that's the first time since i've been on a team that we really believe that we can actually do it. the solheim cup a lwa ys actually do it. the solheim cup always throws up drama. in 2015, the us fought back, winning eight of the 12 single matches to take the cup.
6:41 pm
expect more of the same here at gleneagles. well you join us just perfectly, as the proclaimers, and i would walk 500 miles is being played. i think that's going to be played. i think that's going to be played of over the coming few days here at the solheim cup. we have had the opening ceremony today. it's a tradition in these team events. we have had that team captains both making speeches. we have had those pairings being announced, and we have had a lot of the local golf fans, and general sporting fans over 80,000 people we are expecting to come in over the next three days. just to celebrate this festival of golf, a festival of women's sport thatis golf, a festival of women's sport that is on scottish soil. but the very important thing is to have a look at these pairings for the morning. ten past eight is when we are going to have the first tee shots be taken. so let's take a look through them. katrina matthew has gone with a very strong opening
6:42 pm
pairing for europe. the top two players in the world rankings for the europeans. they are the top europeans, so they have opened strong up against be all experienced morgan pretzel, and marina alex, the rookie. then you have georgia hall, of course, a british women's open champion last year along with the french ricky, celine booty air, she is up against the world number three, lexi thompson, along with britney all tomorrow. and caroline mesa, andjodi, britney all tomorrow. and caroline mesa, and jodi, will take on a tough challenge with these two sisters, jessica and nelly, if you don't know them, they are golf superstars. and they are actually the daughters of peter and regina, tennis players in their own right, and then the final pairing, charlie hall and both on the fourth appearance at a solheim cup for europe. they are going to ta ke cup for europe. they are going to take on the rookies, any part and megan came. somewhere on this, let's hear from the bbc‘s golf correspondent, ian carter.
6:43 pm
a couple of really bold statements i think from both of the captains, katrina matthew clearly wants to get off toa katrina matthew clearly wants to get off to a fast start. she's put out her two highest ranked players, and bronte law and the world number 12, carlotta scott mexica na, bronte law and the world number 12, carlotta scott mexicana, in the opening match, morgan prestel brings me plenty of expense for the americans, but the big statement as far as they are concerned, and julie inkster is concerned is the fact that she has bloodied five of her six rookies in this opening sequence of matches. foursomes is not a match, or a format where you can play yourself into it, which you can with the four balls. so it's a big statement. in that way then, it's a big gamble, but this has been the big gamble, but this has been the big talking point around this american team, and i suppose if they are going to get tested, they have got to get tested early. well it's a big statement of faith from julie inkster in the players who have come to the team. obviously allie mcdonald was a late addition to the tea m mcdonald was a late addition to the team following the injury of stacy lewes, but the other five rookies
6:44 pm
played their way into the top dozen players in the united states, so clearly, inkster is saying, well, you are good enough to be on the team, you better go out there and play. but i think the interesting thing is, as i say, foursomes, the alternate shot format, it's not something they are overly familiar with. it's extremely demanding, and suddenly you are playing shots from places that you are not overly familiar with. so it's a big test of those five rookies, that will be going out on the first morning. we are here in scotland, katrina matthew is from here, she is leading the team now. she's a nine time player. how important is it that the players that she has selected get europe off to a good start?|j players that she has selected get europe off to a good start? i think it's very important, particularly when you consider that the united states have won the last two solheim cups there is momentum with america in that regard, and obviously, katrina matthews, she wants to get the crowd behind her team early. get the crowd behind her team early. get the blue on the board. it's interesting, we have a scottish captain here in scotland, but no scottish player on the team. and
6:45 pm
she's gone with all four of the english players, one in each of the groupings for the opening sequence of foursomes. yes, a big three days ahead for team europe, as they look to wrestle back that trophy. you can follow it of course on the bbc news channel all across the bbc sport website, with live texts and commentary, and also highlights on bbc tv. you won't miss a thing. i certainly want, many thanks to you live from gleneagles. big tennis news today. the four time grand slam champion kim clijsters is coming out of retirement for a second time, she first gave up the sport 12 years ago to start a family, she came back a few years later to win more major titles only to retire again in 2012, but now 36, and with three children, she'll be back on tour next year. what do i really want from life? for
6:46 pm
the past seven years, i've been a full—time mum, and i love it, i really, really do. but i also love being a professional tennis player. kim clijsters being a professional tennis player. ki m clijsters lets being a professional tennis player. kim clijsters lets the emotions run free. and honestly, i miss that feeling. so, what if i tried to do both? are you thinking about a come back? could i be a loving mum to my three kids and the best tennis player i can possibly be? let's do this. let's come back one more time. see you in 2020. we certainly will. kim clijsters, who is making a comeback again, the —— the brain injury charity headway has accused anthonyjoshua's trainer rob macracken of failing in his duty of care, and not protecting the former heavyweight champion from a potentially fatal injury. it followed this interview on five live's boxing podcast

that he knew thatjoshua was concussed 4 rounds before he was beaten by andy ruinunior in their title fight injune. once you knocked her rubies down, and he got caught, he didn't recover. that's an established fact. better than all these experts who virtually don't know him at all. met him once or twice. i knew he was concussed, i'm trying to get them through a few more rounds, and one round at a time seeing where he's at. can he recover? any get back into this. he was glazed either from when he got caught with that initial shock and round three. and he carried that with him up until the end. mccracken has since clarified those comments "i am not a doctor and it may be that concussed is not the right term to have used but the health
6:48 pm
of all the boxers i work with is of paramount importance" here's headways deputy chief executive like most people come i think was really shocked by the admission, but the question we really have to a nswer the question we really have to answer ourselves, we actually shocked by the act of allowing a boxer to continue after a suspected concussion? are we actually shocked that he has made this admission. because i think that in most boxing matches, it's very hard to say that this trainer is out and alone and put them back in and saying, you know, just get through this next round, or you know, know, just get through this next round, oryou know, i know, just get through this next round, or you know, i know you are shaking your feet, but just round, or you know, i know you are shaking your feet, butjust hang round, or you know, i know you are shaking yourfeet, butjust hang in there. and that kind of is the really worrying thing we are talking about here. this is not going to be an isolated incident. i think we have been very, very clear throughout, we have always had a very strong stance against boxing. we have called for it repeatedly to be banned. the reality is, there is no safe form of boxing. and every time one of these, you know, incredibly fit strong, technically gifted athletes lands a blow on somebody else's head, it's a tremendous risk of causing

significant, or potentially even fatal damage. dashed earlier this month, the teenage rangers support and for life, after directing comments at brown referencing his late sister, fiona. who died from skin cancer at the age of 2110 years ago. it's not just one ago. it's notjust one instance that's happened over the last 12 years, it's hard, but it's it shouldn't be happening, i play football. i play to win, you can shout and swear as much as he wants, but don't go into detail, but for me, that's finished with. it's about me focusing on playing football now, and continuing to win games. the england manager says he is concerned about their trip to bulgaria next month over the fear that his players could faced racist abuse. the stadium is going to be partially closed for the game on the 14th of
