coming up on this programme: a real humbling — psg crush real madrid in the champions league. guangzhou send the holders, kashima antlers, packing in the asian champions league. osaka stars in osaka — the hometown hero into the quarters of the pan pacific open. hello and thank you forjoining us. there were two heavyweight clashes in the european champions league on wednesday. one of the pre—tournament favourites juventus drew 2—2 in spain, against atletico madrid, while real madrid's bid for a 14th european cup began with a humbling 3—0 defeat at paris saint—germain. our football reporterjohn bennett was impressed by psg, despite some high profile absences. without edinson kobane, neymar,

kylian mbappe and still they were superb. they outclassed real madrid who were not in the game, they were outplayed. a terrible night. for angel di maria in particular, against his old club, a wonderful night. he scored two goals. the goalkeeper should have done better in the first. the second a curling shot. we were denied a goal of the season shot. we were denied a goal of the season by gareth bale, a handful ruled it unlawful. and a cherry on top with a brilliant performance by paris saint—germain. do not write them off during this season. let's talk about real madrid's neighbours, atletico. lots of big players lost

but the never say die attitude not loss. the fighting spirit still there for simeoni's side. a brilliant finish and it looked as though juventus would brilliant finish and it looked as thouthuventus would wind the game but they never give up atletico madrid and they got back in. juventus were outdone by set pieces. on debut, scoring with a brilliantly taken header, on debut, scoring with a brilliantly ta ken header, atletico on debut, scoring with a brilliantly taken header, atletico madrid deserved the point. earlier, last season's runners—up tottenham hotspur blew a 2—2 lead at olympiakos where they had to settle for a 2—2 draw. tottenham scored twice in a four—minute spell, in the first half, with a penalty from harry kane, and a goal for lucas moura. just before half—time, daniel podence pulled a goal back for the greek league leaders. and early in the second half, mathieu valbuena equalised

from the penalty spot, to salvage a point for olympiakos. spurs' manager mauricio pochettino wasn't happy. to be honest, the first half i was not happy with the work performance. from the beginning, we had a plan and we did not respect the plan and thatis and we did not respect the plan and that is what disappointed them most. i told the players at time, of course, if we scored two goals but in my opinion, from the penalty, and other good goalfrom lucas but if you only analyse the performance, it was not great. elsewhere, robert lewandowski was among the scorers as bayern munich began their bid for a 6th european cup with a 3—0 win against the 1991 champions red star belgrade. mislav orsic scored a hat—trick as dinamo zagreb thrashed atalanta 4—0. and manchester city won 3—0 at shakhtar donetsk,

with goals from riyad mahrez, ilkay gundogan and gabrieljesus. we start with a good result and the way we played was real good. u nfortu nately, way we played was real good. unfortunately, in the first 10—15 minutes in the second half, where we created chances to get the game over, and it was open but all the quys over, and it was open but all the guys they were fantastic so, yes, good result, better than last season. in the asian champions league, there's a big name casualty as holders kashima antlers are out. they were held to a 1—1 draw by guangzhou evergrande in the 2nd leg of their quarter—final on wednesday, with the chinese side going through on away goals. after a goalless first leg in guangzhou, anderson talisca scored the opening goal of the tie, the brazilian international, former brazilian international

heading the visitors into the lead just before half—time injapan. that left the home side needing to score twice to stay in the competition. they equalised through serginho early in the second half but couldn't get a winner. it finished i—all on the night, 1—1 on aggregate and it's guangzhou who go through to the last four. i think during the game, you know, when you score first, after, you do not want to lose, after you try to fight even more and this happened during the game so congratulations to all my players because tonight i think they did a great performance. everyone gave more than 100% so i am so happy with that. the 9th rugby world cup starts injapan on friday, with the tournament being played in asia for the first time. new zealand will be looking to win the trophy for a record—extending fourth time and the third in a row. adam wild looks ahead to what should be a colourful tournament. just to warn you there's some flash photography coming up. the world is best players have

as team spirit, look no further than tongo. the arousing singing on the way over would do the confidence no harm. bringing the tournament to asia has been a long time coming but the wait is finally over. on to tennis and the top seed naomi osaka is through to the quarter—finals of the pan—pacific open, in osaka. the world number 4 — who was born in the city — had a bye in the first round. she eased into the last eight with a straight sets victory over bulgaria's viktoria tomova, who's ranked 181 in the world. osaka, who was the runner—up last year when the tournament was played in tokyo, came through 7—5, 6—3. she's bidding to win her first title since the australian open back in january. wednesday's winners also included the number 4 seed angelique kerber, whose victory ended a run of five straight defeats stretching back to wimbledon.

we sat again. i really look forward to this process and able to be part of the team again. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. but from me and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello. thursday morning brings another rather chilly start but actually the emphasis over the next few days is for things to turn a little warmer and, with that, for the vast majority, it will be dry. high pressure firmly in charge at the moment, centred right on top of the british isles for thursday morning. one or two pot patches underneath this high, with light winds and one frontal system bringing some extra cloud and the odd spot of rain in the far north of scotland. and that's where we'll have the mildest weather through the first part of the morning. further south, one or two spots down around to all four degrees in the countryside.

but acroos england and wales, we will see plenty of sunshine, once any early fog patches have cleared from the likes of north—west england. some early fog across parts of northern ireland but, again, some sunshine to come here. where we start off cloudy in scotland, that cloud should break to give some spells of sunshine. there could be some areas of cloud there and lapping into east anglia and the southeast through the afternoon, but, generally speaking, a dry day for most and a slightly warmer one as well, with highs of 17 to 22 degrees. it stays fine as we go through thursday night. the cloud continuing to peel away from scotland. the winds picking up though, across western areas. so no realfog problems, i suspect, across the western side of the uk. certainly not much fog affecting northern ireland. slightly milder in the west as well. but further east some rather chilly weather to start friday morning, and the fog risk really pushing its way into south—east scotland and north—east england. but any of that fog will lift. we'll see some areas cloud drifting

northwards through the day but, generally, it is another fine day with quite a lot of sunshine and, again, it will be a little bit warmer. widely 19 to 21 degrees, but somewhere in north—east scotland, we could get all the way up to 2a degrees. and saturday looks warmer still. a feed of very warm air wafting up from the south. relatively humid air as well. and then, as we go through the weekend, we will turn our attention to the west because these frontal systems will be trying to make some inroads. for the majority, on saturday, we get away with a dry day, with quite a lot of sunshine. it will be quite breezy but there is just a hint there of a shower across the south—west of england. could see some of these into wales, northern ireland as well, late in the day. there could be the odd thunderstorm and some hefty downpours as well. but i think saturday, the warmest day generally. 21 degrees in glasgow. 25 or 26 towards the southeast. some uncertainty about this but on sunday it looks like we will see showers and thunderstorms becoming more widespread. but there are some doubts aboutjust how far north and east they will push. some spells of sunshine as well but it will start to turn cooler and fresher from the west.
