hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm james pearce, our headlines this evening off and running new zealand start the defence of their world cup title with a win against south africa. a late drop goald helps france survive a second half fightback by argentina to win by two points back with a bang. manchester city respond to last weekend's defeat by scoring eight against watford also coming up in the programme, ferrari's sharl leclair is on pole for the third race in a row. he'll start tomorrow's singapore grand prix ahead of championship leader lewis hamilton. and a bit closer to home, ahead of the world championships that start tomorrow, the world's top paracyclists take to the yorkshire roads.
7:32 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. good evening, we'll have all the news about manchester city's record breaking afternoon and the details from today's other premier league matches a bit later, but let's start injapan with the rugby world cup. of the day's three games it was defending champions new zealand against two times winners south africa that stood out as being the really big one, and the all blacks came out on top 23 points to 13. from yokohama, here's our sports correspondent katie gornall rarely is this trophy out of their grasp, new zealand and south africa have won it five times it would not be the world cup without this. but south africa had no trouble there,
7:33 pm
in front of the post. but this was a heavyweight battle, after 20 minutes, the all blacks ran through the south african defence as few sides can. minutes later they struck again, this time through scott scott barrett 1a points clearer by half—time. they were in control but as soon as the concentration wavered, they were in, but try as they might, south africa just could not really new zealand in. but with the final in yokohama, these two could be reunited before too long. many thought there could've been an upset here given south africa plus plus form coming into this tournament, new zealand were ruthless and they were lifting the cup for the fifth time in a row there is plenty of stuff to work on but the boy showed a lot of fortitude and most of them came and
7:34 pm
we scrambled really well and they had opportunities themselves and both of those over the important to us. both of those over the important to us. if we concede 11 penalties to two, we will be able to decide, i think discipline was our biggest downfall and the obvious lead them scoring two and i think we canjust say well done to them. the first match of the day was in sapporo and australia had a scare, they trailed fiji mid—way through the second half but still won 39—21. tulsen tullet was at the game for us. it was a full house in here for the first of two contests in this weekend. and the end, it was a story that won by 39 points and 21. if you watch the first 15 minutes or so, people would've said what is going on here. winners for fiji were really making inroads and they were
7:35 pm
headed half—time, further ahead just after the interval but then came onto the picture on ten or 15 minutes and the veteran came off the bench and complexion working, they got the rolls going forward and picking up the wallabies, scored two, a bonus point victory and he should have been, a bit harsh on fiji, but in this contest, the go to the front and the second half and they stay there while also in this pool as well, so it is going to be fiji, so the play for for them, pool as well, so it is going to be fiji, so the play forfor them, they can make it through to the quarterfinals and they've already been at that stage pass, but the wallabies, peaked in the second half and picked up a much—needed victory. the tightest match of all was france against france had a narrow win against argentina.
7:36 pm
it finished 23—21 in tokyo. the french had a 17 point lead at halftime, but the pumas fought back to take the lead. replacement camille lopez won it for the french, his drop goal inside the last 10 minutes saw them retake the lead. argentina missed a late penalty to win it and may now struggle to get out of pool c, which also includes england we'll have the latest news from the home nations a bit later in the programme. they all play their first match in the tournament over the next couple of days. on to football, we'll get to manchester city's 8 goals in a moment, but for a couple of hours leicester climbed to second in the table. they came from behind to beat spurs 2—1 at home in a match in which once again var was right at the centre. eleanor roper reports. totte n ha m tottenham took to the king power stadium fresh from a disappointing start to their champions league campaign, unhappy that his men had not followed his game plan against
7:37 pm
creekside. but today, a different game ata creekside. but today, a different game at a different plan. a match that once again showed us why var was introduced, disallowed in the home cloud dissolution. while spurs looked down, they differently were not out, at least harry cain did not think so, scoring is for the season, lying down on the job. think so, scoring is for the season, lying down on thejob. on think so, scoring is for the season, lying down on the job. on the second goalfor the spurs, or so it seemed, another big moment for the game and for var. yet another goal moved out. unbelievably, the score still 1—0 until lester equalled. and then a late goal from james madison gave them the victory. disappointment for them the victory. disappointment for the second week for the spurs. them the victory. disappointment for the second week for the spursm was just the case of preparing the players mentally for the game and we
7:38 pm
had to adapt the system, we spoke at half—time and that is something that we worked on over the course of the preseason and the players deserve huge credit because the quality that they showed was top class against a north london team. that is football, it happens, change is quick, the emotions during the game a yet to consider the second goal, we were disappointed but we have to keep working with the same motivation and we have a lot of games ahead that are coming very quickly and we need to be ready. but it's fair to say that this isn't the match that will make most of tomorrow's newspaper headlines. over to adam wild who has the challenge of telling us about 8 city goals, as well as the day's other premier league matches. that is where we start, the etihad of course is the place to start,
7:39 pm
and this man here, pep guardiola. he made 4 changes to his manchester city side that were beaten by norwich last weekend, for the visit of watford. and, i think its fair to say his team responded in some style. perhaps a moment to look away for watford fans. it finished manchester city 8 — watford 0. just one goal away from that premier league record. city ahead inside the first minute. just 53 seconds is all it took for david silva to poke in the first. if watford were hoping to keep it tight, i'm afraid that went straight out the window. sergio ageuero with a penalty. 2—nil after 6 minutes. that's 8 goals in 6 games now for the argentinian riyad mahrez, back in the side, scored from a deflected free kick, that was 3—nil inside 12 minutes. things getting pretty embarrassing for quique sanchez flores side. and it only got worse. bernmardo silva added another, then nicolas otamendi. 5 goals in the first 18 minutes. the quickest team to 5—nil
7:40 pm
in premier league history. and at the point, well you really were fearing the worst for watford. bernardo silva got his second shortly after half time, he then completed his hat trick. thats his first for manchester city, indeed his first ever senior hat trick. before perhaps the best goal of the lot, kevin de bruyne with manchester city's eighth of the afternoon. so if there was any question at all about how city might bounce back after that defeat last weekend, well i think its fair to say they answered them. as comfortable an afternoon as they're ever likely to have. as for watford, well, a very grim day for the premier leagues bottom side. what i like the most is after the second term it can be very boring, people can start to do it they want, they start to play for themselves. it was the complete opposite. we we re it was the complete opposite. we were more aggressive than the first
7:41 pm
half, and we continued to try to score goals and i think it was a good show for our fans and supporters and a lovely day in the sunshine. the players right now, they will dedicate to have to work with that, it's the worst news we can receive and we have to play against city, 15 minutes, we will receive it was really difficult for the players. so what of the team that actually beat manchester city last weekend 7 well, this is how they fared. losing 2—nil at burnley. both goals coming in the first half from this man chris wood. pretty comfortable it was in the end for burnley who now move up to 7th in the table. that is in fact their first win since the opening day of the season. norwich then, down to earth with a bump after that victory last week.
7:42 pm
they remain just above the bottom three. at thought were excellent throughout but particularly the first 15 or 20 minutes, on the front foot, i think they didn't venture too much out of their half, it was a dominant early performance and gives us control the game. sheffield united won away for the first time since their return to the premier league. 2—nil it finished at goodison park against everton. this was the first goal. right on half time, totally against the run of play. sheffield uniteds first corner of the match, yerry mina heading the ball into his own net. lys mousset added a second in the second half, thats his forst goal for sheffield united. a good win for for chris wilder's side, they had to soak up a lot of pressure. the everton crowd though were far from happy with their side. plenty of boos going around goodison. some pressure now on their manager marco silva. but relief for wilder after what he called a ridiculous game.
7:43 pm
we are delighted, just a ridiculous game we are all involved in, i think thatis game we are all involved in, i think that is the worse and played all season. that is the worse and played all season. certainly in my opinion, honestly, we deserve some thing from the last game we played and playing against indian replay anywhere near the where we would've liked to. it was just a ridiculous skin that we are involved in. —— game. there we go, just to confirm those results including that extraordinary scoreline for manchester city, just in case you didn't believe me the first time. 8—nil it finished at the etihad. one result we've haven't spoken about, down at the bottom there, the late kick off where newcastle united and brighton played out a goalless draw. it could have been rather different though, had it not been for this. brighton sub aaron connolly flicking the ball over the keeper, and fabian schar somehow clearing it off the line! was that over? there was no signal from the officials. very very close. so 0—0 it finished.
7:44 pm
a glance at the table then, manchester city second behind liverpool who play chelsea tomorrow. leicester up to third after beating spurs. whilst down at the bottom, things looking pretty tough for watford. still without a win this season. aberdeen have moved up to third in the scottish premiership, after a 2—0 win away at livingston. they took the lead from a corner after nearly half an hour, and later added a second from the penalty spot, so the visitors took all three points and stretch their unbeaten run to five, whilst livingston drop down to sixth. elsewhere ross county are 5th after a 2—1win at motherwell.
7:45 pm
st mirren and hamilton was goalless. celtic and rangers both play tomorrow. there was an unlikely point for derby at elland road, as they equalised in the 91st minute. leeds were winning 1—nilup untilthen, thanks to a max lowe own goal. patrick bamford then missed several opportunities to make it 2—nil, but it was chris martin who scored for derby in stoppage time — his first goal for the club in nearly two years. this was the first meeting between the two clubs since the rams beat leeds in last season's championship play—off semi—final. swansea stay second in the table after they drew with bristol city. preston north end moved up to third with a 1—nil win at birmingham, while qpr go fourth after a 2—1 victory at milwall. there were also wins for cardiff, hull, nottingham forest, blackburn and wigan. there are 80 fa cup ties this weekend — we've reached the 2nd qualifying round.
7:46 pm
irlam fc from the 9th tier are out, they lost to former league side york city 2—nil. kyle mcfarlane sealed irlams fate with the second of the game. you can keep up to date with the rest of the fa cup and scottish cup scores on the bbc sport website. still to come on sportsday. you'll make as you know, i like to run fast, but did you know that i can run fast, but did you know that i ca n fly run fast, but did you know that i can fly even faster? we hear from the british sprinter on how he's already got a 2nd career mapped out. now back to the rugby world cup and two of the home nations teams face each other in what looks like being the stand out game tomorrow. the big match is in yokohama where ireland — the number one ranked side in the world — take on scotland. the irish narrowly won the last time they met in the six nations earlier this year, and the scottish captain expects that there won't be much between them again.
7:47 pm
going up against them, and we have a game in georgia that we are attached against a very strong one and we did well and against ireland as well, so well and against ireland as well, so we will try. another thing will be really confident of, you will see a very collective effort and that effort will make us tough to beat it i have no doubt that the scott's are working away and there will be doing something similar. ijust think there is a huge amount between the two teens and maybe get a bounce the ball or it could be a little bit more efficient than the other, it mightjust tip more efficient than the other, it might just tip the balance. england also get going tomorrow,
7:48 pm
they face tonga at 11.15 in sapporo. four years ago they became the first host nation to be knocked out in the group stage. our correspondent andy swiss is with the england squad. behind me can see them training for the final time here before the world cup campaign gets under way and as you can cup campaign gets under way and as you can see, cup campaign gets under way and as you can see, conditions pretty much perfect here although of course the weather won't be a factor tomorrow because they are playing under the roof of the dome. the good news for england fans is that they're pretty much at full strength here, and there is a huge occasion for these players including when making his world cup debut here sam underhill. i'm very grateful to be here and are mindful of enjoying it and also mindful of enjoying it and also mindful of enjoying it and also mindful of not getting too worked up. after the chill before the game andi up. after the chill before the game and i think the intensity and everything will be there anyway and
7:49 pm
so everything will be there anyway and so i'mjust everything will be there anyway and so i'm just excited. hoping that all of this practise makes perfect tomorrow, the overwhelming favourites is congo in the world cup campaign finally kicks off. wales are the last of the home nations to get under way in the tournament. they face georgia in their pool d opener in toyota on monday. captain alun wynjones will equal gethinjenkins' wales record of 129 caps for his country when he leads out the side. jones is playing in his fourth world cup and head coach warren gatland knows just how important he is to the team. he deserves all of the accolades and is to spend a great person for rugby and for the past couple of years, that rhe commission has notjust been for wales but worldwide. in everybody‘s looking at the

7:51 pm
at the beginning of the season, put into a ferrari car in the place many wondered could he raise the stakes and take on the mantle. he has shown over the past three races they can do over the past three races they can d o exa ctly over the past three races they can do exactly that. he one from paul position and now given himself every chance of winning in singapore by gaining pole position and he did so in such style, it was not perfect, it was not beautiful to watch. it was ragged and heartfelt but he has given himself every opportunity to try and win this race. lewis hamilton was right alongside him and the rundown, very short rundown will be crucial. everything is to play for in the clay are looking to gain more momentum so

this the track where usain developed the speed to win eight olympic titles making it the perfect place for him to continue his development, but he is not content with targeting titles. usain, he set the path for us to chase and setting the road records which might seem a little insane, but it is possible to become the world champion, olympic champion that is what motivates me. exactly, i can fly fast on the track and fly fast in the air. from the skies to the seas. that's all from sportsday. rugby world cup victory for new zealand france and australia and in football there is only one score thatis football there is only one score that is going to stand out, watford— zero. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more throughout the evening.
