for dina asher—smith, this final was as close to a shoo—in as a medal could be. a force to be reckoned with regardless, but with all her major rivals out, the 100 metres silver medallist was left as the sharpest and fastest woman in town. she has got to control into the home straight. it is dina asher—smith. and with her trademark brilliant bend, she left the rest for dust. the gold medal! it is dina asher—smith! she is the champion! and this was the moment it started to sink in. dina has done it! britain had never before had a female global sprint gold medallist but it is amazing how quickly things can change. very quickly, if you are dina. a cuddle from mum and the tears flowed. you're the favourite or whatever but you've still got to go and do it, you're only the favourite if you perform how everybody expects you to, you know? i wasjust really focused on putting together a good race. i dreamt of this but now it's real. well, that is the second of britain's medals at these championships and their first gold.

might tomorrow deliver another? katarina johnson—thompson has, for too long, seen her global heptathlon events blow up after silly mistakes. johnson—thompson is coming through nicely. well, not today. that's an excellent run! 13.08! this reaction happened over... she has 12.38 already. ..and over, as she hurdled and threw two lifetime bests in her first three events. running is herforte and, by the end of the 200 metres, she had an overnight lead on her major rival world, olympic and european champion nafi thiam. tomorrow will be a huge day forjohnson—thompson and a day where asher—smith will wake up as world champion. no, dina, you're not dreaming. natalie pirks, bbc news, doha. many tributes have been paid today to the former bbc and itn news presenter peter sissons, who's died at the age of 77.

hello again. thanks forjoining us. dina asher smith is the world 200 metres champion. the first female british sprinter to claim an individual global gold. coming up on sportsday, we'll hear from the golden girl herself. and shortly we'll be heading live to doha. but first, let's relive the near 22 seconds that have changed her life. tina asher smith blasts out of the blocks already leaves them behind and already passing outside. she's runa and already passing outside. she's run a brilliant been here, dina asher—smith, now she's got to control into the home straight. it's dina asher—smith, with brown trying to chase, she is getting closer, but
10:37 pm
dina asher—smith is away. she's going to take the gold! it's dina asher—smith! she's the champion! world champion! dina asher—smith has done it. dina asher smith has becomejust britain's seventh female world athletics champion. following the likes of jess ennis hill, christine 0huruogu, and paula radcliffe. her time, which was rounded down to 21.88 seconds, is a new british record. breaking her own mark by one hundredth of a second. after the race she spoke to jea nette kwaj ke. ijust don't know what to say. i don't think it's properly sunk in, it'sjust something don't think it's properly sunk in, it's just something that... don't think it's properly sunk in, it'sjust something that... between now and the last world championship, john and i knew that i could do it. but it's a different thing kind of going and doing it, and to run that time, i'm tired, it's been a long chance, i'm tired. it means so much. i'mjust like chance, i'm tired. it means so much. i'm just like lost for words, because it's a different thing of

everybody but you not like, oh, you are the favourite, or whatever. but you still have got to go into it, you still have got to go into it, you are only the favourite if you prefer and how everybody expects you to you know, so i wasjust really focused on putting together a good race, and! focused on putting together a good race, and i dreamt of this, but it's real now. so let's go live to doha and speak to our reporter ade adedoyin. ade, asher smith was the favourite, and she delivered on the expectations. to put some context onto what she did tonight, no british female sprinter has won a global title for nearly 100 years. as you say, she came in as i have a favourite. and delivered an emphatic style, and the emotions afterwards show just delivered an emphatic style, and the emotions afterwards showjust how much it meant to her. that time that she clocked, 21.88 will be good enough to win four of the last five championships, that's the level she's operating on. very constricted and consistent on the diving lane circuit, she struggled to hold back her emotions on the track and in the interview as well. i said to her, when your mum spoke to, what did she
10:39 pm
say? she said she didn't have to say anything, and the floodgates open for both of us. a special night for her and her for both of us. a special night for herand her mum. for both of us. a special night for her and her mum. at night which will give a lot of confidence going into the lipid games, because she will go into tokyo now as a world champion. we are celebrating in terms of british success, tonight, but could there be another gold medalfor britain to celebrate tomorrow night as well? very possibly, because katerina johnson thompson had a very good day at the habitat fine. she has addressed my best personal times are 96 point lead over the olympic and defending world champion of belgium. she shaved off two tenths ofa belgium. she shaved off two tenths of a second of her best time in the spring turtles. and then it made a 71 cm improvement in the shot put, she had a really, really good year. she has set a personal best this season as well. but she is a very fierce competitor, so johnson thompson will have to be out on her best for the second day to make it does my goals for britain in two days. while we await the second day
10:40 pm
of the habitat the line, with a great deal of hopefully not having tempted fate, thank you very much indeed. after two defeats in their opening game of the champions league. liverpool and chelsea have their first wins of the competition. but, neither had the smoothest ride. adam wild has been watching the games tonight, and is at the touch—screen. adam, we had nine goals in one match involving a premier league team last night. they nearly matched it at anfield this evening. liverpool fans have been treated to some extraordinary games at anfield of late, this, just another one. they were very keen to get the defence of their european title up and running after defeat in the opening game of the competition to napoli. they have done that, it finished 11—3 in group e on another raucous and very very exciting european night at anfield. some really special goals as well to keep
