10:40 pm
we'll have more sport throughout the weekend. good night. hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are kevin schofield, editor of politicshome, and the columnist for the new european, and playwright, bonnie greer. many of tomorrow's front pages are already in. let's start with the guardian, and it leads with the news that prince harry has begun legal action against the owners of the sun and the daily mirror, in relation to alleged phone—hacking.
10:41 pm
the same story is in the i, and it notes that the claims have been filed in the same week, as the sussexes began legal action against the mail on sunday. the mail leads on a report which laid bare the failures of scotland yard, in its inquiry into false allegations of a vip paedophile ring. that story's on the front page of the times as well. it says officers face possible misconduct allegations following the release of that report on how the police handled the vip abuse claims. and, the h52 rail project could be scaled back in northern england amid cost—cutting pressures. that's according to the financial times. that is a little flavour of the front pages and we are going to start off with a story this evening and that second salvo coming from the royal household, harry steps up
10:42 pm
press wear with phone hat cream. the brain sums it up quite well, prince harry has essentially gone to war with a tabloid press. we saw obviously in the week that last six are suing the mail on sunday, over the publication of the letter that megan mark wilson heard dad and this is another salvo. understand the details are sketchy but it relates to historical phone hacking allegations in the neck and us. and it is taking against the former owners of news of the world. —— the letter that megan markel send her dad. so clearly prince harry is not best pleased to put it mildly with his treatment and his wife's
10:43 pm
treatment in the hands of the press and he is using a full weight of his legal power to take them on. what is very modern about harry and megan is that i am sure that harry has always been aware that he has never... he has what they call a second person. now he has his niece and nephews and had of him and his older brother and they are young and may have more children and he is not going to be in the line of succession and his children are not going to be there and he has to decide what he is going to do the rest of his life, he is living off the money his mother left him and he was born into that and there is nothing he earned but he wants to have a life. and megan, who has been an activist since he was a little girl, and she has always been very focused and is almost 40 years old and they are basically saying leave us alone, we
10:44 pm
will do our duty and are happy to do oui’ will do our duty and are happy to do our duty but at the same time we wa nt our duty but at the same time we want to have a private life and do what we want to do and to publish her father's letter allegedly, without her permission and we know her father is fragile and he admitted it himself. none of us want to see our private correspondence and she is saying basically did not publish my family's letters and has nothing to do with my life my life with him. how fine is that line, that balance because many people say you take some of the public money and we have a piece of years. they are saying what you have is our work, we will work for you and they even said this was bad timing and that he did not do this and they will always be out there for us and as faras will always be out there for us and as far as the personal life is
10:45 pm
concerned, stay out of our business. that is what harry is saying and i support that 100%. carey was in the army and that was paid to a stop. he had to get out. interesting that he has his mothers legal team behind him. i would be surprised that some accommodation is not reached before it gets that far. i am sure at the moment, the sign owners will say and will be dying to make denying it and fighting as hard as they can but the idea that the duke and duchess of sussex can end up in the witness stand will be quite astonishing. as a powerful legal firm you stand will be quite astonishing. as a powerful legalfirm you got behind him... the beauty of this as she is american so she is willing and able
10:46 pm
and will get on the stand and givee damn and harry will follow her because if she gets up there and testifies that breaks a bunch of amendments. the press feels hold it, this is our tradition and this is what we do and we print everything we are the tabloid pratt democrats and americans don't understand it because we do not have it. so she would not understand how it works but she does not want to understand how it works and he is with her and thatis how it works and he is with her and that is basically it. do you think the couple has the support of the public and does it matter if they have a support behind them?m public and does it matter if they have a support behind them? it is difficult to gauge i suppose. there are sympathy for william and harry after losing her mother for such a young age and i think people will have empathy with a husband who is wanting to protect his new wife. and
10:47 pm
there is not a whole lot of love out there is not a whole lot of love out there for the tabloid praise and —— press and phone hiking is damaging for them. so probably in the court of public opinion at least he probably has people on his side right now. let's see what the daily telegraph and move to the right of the front page, johnson puts his hopes on a veto for brexit deal and this was his plan? why would they it, it is like... borisjohnson is the telegraph's boy so we can probably say this is probably what he is thinking out loud and i know hungarians, they repeat the mike retreated me tonight saying what would he want to mess with the eu to do for britain, what is he getting out of it because the eu gives an enormous amount of
10:48 pm
out of it because the eu gives an enormous amount of aid and what is the uk going to get him if he messes up the uk going to get him if he messes up the veto? what is he going to do? i have been going through a check list of things that we could probably try to avoid asking for brexit so they went the other direction and that did not work. and they try to stop the act and that did not work. the options are narrowing now and we are getting closer to october the 31st and the offer that boris johnson made closer to october the 31st and the offer that borisjohnson made this week has not gone down terribly well in europe so the chance of getting a deal are diminishing which means that on the 19th of october if we do not have a deal by then, that cakes and and you are supposed to ask for and and you are supposed to ask for an extension and he insists that he will not do that. it does make you wonder because his legal team have said that he will write a letter and
10:49 pm
he has said the 31st is at and it makes you wonder how closely they are working together.” makes you wonder how closely they are working together. i say to my fellow ex—pats, we have the sun going down on one yellow haired crazy man going up on another and it looks like he is trying to emulate donald trump's tactics to throw a lot of smoke out here and keep people talking about something else as we scramble around trying to do another thing. and the as we scramble around trying to do anotherthing. and the in as we scramble around trying to do another thing. and the in there and it will be a legal act and october 21 and he can be fifth—round or whatever as a result and he can go to jail. yes i think about what to do so has to throw out a lot of smoke and it is making people, making people, ordinary people come up making people, ordinary people come up with you or remain, it is anxiety building. talking about what to do, it will be interesting to see what he is think about. we could see some
10:50 pm
cuts in the ft weekend. we know the hs to project has been riddled with problems, delays and cost overruns. the government announced a review of it and they are looking at ways of basically seeing billions and billions of pounds and one option that has been seriously considered going to the ft is basically stopping the line at birmingham instead of going further north to weeks now and i thought, that would be hugely controversial because the whole point of hst was that it was supposed to connect the southeast and help share the benefits. and i think that the mark on one hand it will save money but it is talking about something that drains down and it takes the hs out of the hs to do so
10:51 pm
it takes the hs out of the hs to do so would not be terribly high—speed. but said they are thrashing around and looking at ways because the project has gone quite far and it is almost too late to cancel it either said they have other ways... the ca nary said they have other ways... the canary in the coal mine aspect of this, i live in the west end and hst do, we had the terminal bank and my old neighbourhood was leveled in order to make this thing and i had to move everything else. property price is around have gone down and when london market start dropping, everything else will be in big trouble and that is what is happening right now. talking about what you just might just described,... what you just might just described, . .. and what you just might just described,... and deep what you just might just described, . .. and deep businesses, the house prices are going down and people are saying to me, i can buy a house, no, that means you have no money to buy a house. that is what it means. very quickly, thomas cook. talking about vast sums of money, it
10:52 pm
isa talking about vast sums of money, it is a great story actually and it is something that people who lost their jobs and holiday—makers to ended up being stranded, it turns out that thomas cooke had to pay tens of millions of pounds in fees to financial advisers essentially as it was desperately thrashing around to raise a rescue deal. it got £700 million in the last few were impossible in the company collapsed but this is a stake in the throat for a lot of people who look at how, john mcdonald describes it as a feeding frenzy and all these financial advisers realise they need to cash and quickly and get vast sums of money but at the same time the company was not able to... the stupidity of it is you have an old dinosaur like thomas cooke and people on social media, they are
10:53 pm
acting like 1985, the thing collapses at 2am and everyone is rushing to the trough and figured the people who work there, the people on the front line did not know this is happening. did not know this is happening and even doing hand—outs, customers were doing hand—outs, customers were doing hand—outs on the other end of the counter, saying thank you very much, here is £50. it is outrageous and. let's turn to the independent and stepping out alone. so another political bombshell this morning, first of all announced on twitter that he was not going to be standing to be an mp in the next election and it was also quitting the tory party said that was enough of a shock and obviously he is one of the 21 tory rebels who lost the party with and this is a guy who a couple months ago wanted to be the next prime minister and later he announced that he would stand as an independent
10:54 pm
candidate in the election next year andi candidate in the election next year and i would not go so far to say that it throws it right up and does a heavy favourite to win again but it makes it a bit more interesting and injects a bit of star dust into it. what is so amazing about rory stewart he is like a 60 version of how to be a politician and looking and saying they like me and gave me and saying they like me and gave me a price and i am going to actually e—mail it and show you how real i am. he may be is realand he thinks he may step out now and be an independent and london and not understanding how london works but i guess somehow there will be pockets of people who think he is really cool and make and the mayor of london and they chemically tried that with borisjohnson london and they chemically tried that with boris johnson already. let's finish off with the story on the front of the times, beautiful isn't it? and what a lovely thing, those are mates. it is the assassin
