11:46 pm
hi, mark. hi. very, very interesting mixed bag of this week. we have the aeronauts — up, up and away in a huge balloon. doctor sleep — the sequel to the shining. chuckles nervously. and after the wedding, starring michelle williams and julianne moore. yeah, that was my nervous laugh, actually. i know, i know! we'll come to that! you'll be fine. we'll come to that. yes, let's start with the lovely felicityjones and eddie redmayne. yes. so, how do you feel about heights? are you ok with heights? i am not too bad, actually. oh, really? see, i'm... is this gonna...? i'm terrified of heights. 0h, 0k. so this is basically a mixture of fact and fiction and spectacle. it is basically about an attempt by a meteorologist and a balloon pilot to go the highest above the earth that anyone has ever gone in the 19th century. two characters — james glaisher, played by eddie redmayne, who is a real—life character, and then amelia wren is played by felicityjones, who is a composite character, based to some extent on the figure of sophie blanchard but a number

of different people. they are essentially chalk and cheese. he's a straight—laced scientist. she is a flamboyant — she's a pilot but she's also a showman. she's somebody who understands the need to put on a show as the balloon takes off. together, they are attempting to break the record for altitude. and of course, the higher they go, the more they encounter weather, storms, cloud — and everything else that the film—makers choose to throw at them. here's a clip. i'm not sure your instruments are much use to us now. we need to batten down. please put on your wet—weather clothing. there are no prizes for obstinacy! james, if you won't listen to me... thunder claps. ..listen to that. but not one of my readings suggested a storm. well, that's what it is. and we're inside the cumula, which is precisely where
11:48 pm
we shouldn't be. don't worry, she's not made of conductive material, so we won't attract lightning. and if we are struck, the gas will explode, so we won't live long enough for me to point out... argh! i shouldn't laugh — i mean, i don't mean to... no, but it's... it is nervous laughter. here's the thing. it's, you know, it's an entertaining cinematic spectacle. on the one hand, you have the narrative, which follows some fairly basic parameters. they are chalk and cheese characters, they are stuck together in a basket which is up in the air, they have to learn to put their differences aside and work together, 0k? and it takes liberties with the truth — although in the back of it, there is a true story which has been much polished. however, for me, the main thing was that i went to see it thinking eddie redmayne, felicityjones, it's going to be a character study. yeah. i hadn't realised how vertiginous it was going to be. and i am terrified of heights. i've actually been up in a hot—air balloon and i found the taking—off thing one of the scariest things ever. and this film is really, really good at giving
11:49 pm
you the spectacle of clambering around, in and outside a balloon, lost in the highest reaches of — i found several moments of it absolutely thrilling, but also absolutely terrifying. it's a really good piece of cinema. narratively, there are some hokey elements to it. i like the characters, largely because these are very good performances and of course have worked together before. and the story is interesting, if fanciful. but the sheer cinematic spectacle of it is what won me over. i — i'm not kidding. i spent about 20—25 minutes of the film like literally going like this because i am so — you ever see that film... that's like me in a horrorfilm! now you know! exactly! did you ever seen that film the walk, which was the — you know, philippe petit walking between the twin towers? 0h! i know the one you mean, yes!
11:50 pm
it was a documentary which has no moving footage. but then there's a robert zemeckis drama in which we saw — well, i felt like that for a good 25 minutes. so i thought it was very entertaining. fanciful, but very entertaining. 0k. and having said i'm fine with heights, you see, i'm not brave enough to go up in one. because i am more worried about the landing. and i imagine.. yes, the coming down is always going to... it's quite... yes, absolutely terrifying. yes. now, but although, to be fair, so doctor sleep is an adaptation of stephen king's sequel to the shining. and you know that famously, stephen king was not a big fan of stanley kubrick's film the shining. he had many problems with it. so this picks up the story years later. danny has grown up and is now dealing with the demons of the past. there are other people out there in the world who have his shining abilities — psychological powers, psychokinetic powers — and they are being pursued by a character, rose the hat, played by rebecca ferguson. and we the narrative is going to move inexorably, we know, back towards the overlook hotel. but, here's the thing. the shining — and many people find the shining terrifying. i have never done. i think it's atmospheric but i don't think it is terrifying. this for me, is not primarily a horrorfilm. it is much more like it or like all those stephen king
11:51 pm
stories, like firestarter or like carrie — about a young person who has a ability they do not fully understand and then what happens to them as a result of it. it is a kind of episodic, psychological journey. it's kind of an adventure, rather than a horror movie. and i went into it thinking how is anyone gonna pull off a sequel to the shining? it is a completely different movie. it is absolutely its own thing, it's much more about narrative, it's much more about storytelling, whereas the kubrick film was just to do with atmosphere and that feeling of dread. and actually, i thought it was much better than i had expected. i think it is well played, it is made quite sincerely. clearly, the director mike flanagan, who also wrote it, cares very much both for the stephen king text and the stanley kubrick film. and there are sort of cheeky callbacks to the kubrick. but i thought it found its own space and, like i said, i went in there scared that it would just let me down, and actually being pleasantly relieved by the fact that it's — i say this advisedly, to me, it reminded me of things like — there were elements of twilight in there, and i do know that some people think that is a criticism but i love the twilight movies.
11:52 pm
there was an element of that kind of fantasy in there, which i am a big fan of it. 0k. you would be fine with it. you would be absolutely fine with it. 0k. but you have to see the shining first. 0k! after the wedding. let's move on. a remake? a remake of a danish film? a remake of a danish—swedish film, yes, directed by susanne bier. this flips the genders of the originalfilm. so michelle williams is isabel. she's a young woman working in an orphanage in kolkata. she is told that she has to go to the america to meet an investor. she does not want to go but she has told you have to go. when she gets there, she meets julianne moore's businesswoman who says "i'm very busy, my daughter is getting married tomorrow. come to the wedding and we'll talk about it there." but as soon as she gets the wedding and set eyes onjulianne moore's husband and daughter, she completely freaks out. she panics and she runs off to be on her own at the wedding. here's a clip. i couldn't agree more. i am not into weddings. i'd like to be alone. tell me about it. crowds are awful.
11:53 pm
music and laughter in background. ok, i can take one for the team and drink them both. chuckles. you know how at every wedding, there are always a few single people pretending not to care they're single? well, we're those people. chuckles. it's weird, right? i'm divorced. what's your story? get away from me. 0k. what you see in that clip is everything you need to know about that film is playing out on herface — not what he is saying, but on the way she is reacting. when she first sets eyes on the family, the way she reacts tells you the story. you pretty much know from that moment what the big reveal is, and i think that works really well. it turns out, actually, the story then has further reveals which are far more schematic and rather too neat for me.
11:54 pm
so for me, the film balances between two weird things. on the one hand, very good performances in which individual moments work really, really well, but an overarching narrative which is kind of melodramatic and schematic and sort of rather too neatly laid out. but on the basis of the performances alone, it is really great. see, i love show—don't—tell film—making. for me, my favourite thing in a film is when someone does not say anything, butjust by the way they look or stand, you know exactly where you are. there are a couple of moments. i think it is a flawed film. some critics have been very sniffy about it, but there are individual moments in this which worked really well and justify the things that do not work about it. because it isjust those moments — and incidentally, ithink, julianne moore is always terrific. and michelle williams — i like her also. yeah. and there is a dynamic between the two of them, which is although they're chalk and cheese, very, very different, they are, as the drama plays out, you realise that they are two sides of a similar coin. 0k. and now, best out this week?
11:55 pm
i know what you were going to choose. yeah, you did. i knew. it's — have you seen it yet? it was so stressful! you did? it was so stressful! did you like it? um, i thought it was very well—made but i... 0k. your — your thing earlier. like, sitting like this. yep. i was so stressed. i struggle to enjoy films that stress me out that much, i'm afraid. 0k. but i thought — i thought the filming was excellent and i thought the score was very unusual and very interesting. i mean, theoretically, it is meant to be a film about teenagers, but i think it is about much more. it's like lord of the flies, it's kind of heart of darkness. that mica levi score... the score was extraordinary, yeah. unbelievable, which gets under your skin. so are you glad that you saw it? i can tell that you did not enjoy it. no, you see, i'm afraid i'm a bad person because i only managed about two—thirds of it because i was so stressed, i could not take any more. oh, wow! 0k. i couldn't. i was looking at them, "why is no—one dying of hypothermia? who is the hostage?" you know, all of this. but was — i think — what... i know, i am being too literal. but it is intense. it is an intense cinematic experience.
11:56 pm
and i think when we get to the end of the year, it's gonna be on my best of the year list. it is. i know this. so you'll have to revisit it. quick thought about dvd? because i liked that too. ok, so the souvenir, which is a film byjoanna hogg, who i think is one of, you know, one of britain's best most interesting film—makers. it is based on a relationship that she had many years ago, about which a degree of mystery still exists. brilliant performances by tom burke and honor swinton byrne. she is currently cutting the souvenir part two, which is about the aftermath of the relationship, and i cannot wait to see it because i think this is joanna hogg's most accessible film — although it is still very, very chilly. it is almost like a psychological thriller, it's almost like a gaslighting story. and i think it is really wonderful. i think she is a brilliant film—maker and it is really worth seeing. it is fascinating. it is an interesting week. enjoy your cinema—going, whatever you choose to see. have a great weekend. bye— bye.
