you're watching bbc news at nine with me, annita mcveigh. the headlines... borisjohnson and jeremy corbyn face a sceptical audience in the first election debate as they're pushed on brexit, the nhs, and honesty. does the truth matter in this election? i think it does and i think it is very important. i have been very clear about the deal that i have done. we will have a referendum, we will have negotiation and we will abide by that result. twitter says the conservatives misled the public by rebranding an official account to look like an independent fact—checking service during the debate jose mourinho is the new spurs manager after the club sacked mouricio pochettino last night.

coming up at 9.15, nearly four and a half million people in the uk go without dental care, new bbc analysis has revealed. the foreign secretary summons the chinese ambassador after a former employee of the uk consulate in hong kong claims he was detained and tortured by chinese officials. and the mission to save thousands of animals from australia's bushfires. we'll have the latest on the desperate efforts. good morning and welcome to the bbc news at nine. borisjohnson and jeremy corbyn have traded verbal blows over brexit in the first tv debate of the general election campaign. the prime minister said
9:02 am
the labour leader is unclear about whether his party supports leaving or remaining in the eu and mr corbyn said the nhs isn't safe in conservative hands. the two leaders also locked horns over trust and leadership, the future of scotland and the royal family. the public response suggests that neither man emerged as an obvious winner. iain watson has this report. this election has produced a first. never before has a sitting prime minister taken on the leader of the opposition head—to—head in a debate with no other parties present. but the topics they debated were less surprising. it all began with brexit. are you going to campaign for leave or remain? i want to bring people together... applause. ..therefore there will be a referendum in which that decision will be made by the british people and our government will abide by that decision. butjeremy corbyn moved swiftly to steer the debate onto his territory, claiming that a post—brexit us trade deal could harm the health service.
9:03 am
"full market access for us products to our national health service." you are going to sell our national health service out to the united states. it is completely untrue. there are no circumstances whatever. .. boris johnson wanted to get back to brexit. although this has been consistently denied, he claimed labour would do a deal with the snp to deliver not one referendum, but two. of course jeremy corbyn and the labour party are going to do a deal, they probably already have done a deal, with nicola sturgeon and the snp to form a corbyn—sturgeon coalition and the price of that deal, the price of nicola sturgeon‘s support, she has made it absolutely clear, would be a second referendum on the union. i think i ought to be able to reply to this nonsense. the idea that there is going to be a coalition between labour and the snp, there is not going to be a coalition between labour and anybody else. there are no deals that
9:04 am
have been done and there will be no deals done. both leaders tried to play to their strengths but found it difficult to deliver a knockout blow. but the questions moved from policy to the more personal. does the truth matter in this election? i think it does... laughter. anti—semitism is an absolute evil and scourge within our society. racism in any form is a scourge in our society. but it is going to take a lot more for one debate to convince the undecided who they should be backing on december the 12th. iain watson, bbc news, salford. the conservative party has been criticised after rebranding one of its twitter accounts to look like an independent fact—checking service during the debate. the conservative campaign headquarters press account changed its name to "fact check uk", with branding. twitter has accused the party of misleading the public. our technology correspondent has

the latest from los angeles. they are not happy to say the least. they are not happy to say the least. they put out a statement about what the tory party had done with that account, saying it was misleading, that it would not be tolerated in future. they said they would take decisive, corrective action, if the tory party or any other account tries to pull a stunt like this in future. twitter is pretty clear about this kind of thing, it has a policy about pretending or implying something you are not on the platform. this is a company that has had to battle this type of technique of changing the identity of an account as something that foreign governments were do to interfere in elections. to see it coming from a british political party has really angered twitter, at least that is the sense i am getting from the company. our political correspondent nick eardley is on the conservative

campaign bus this morning. i think you are heading to county durham this morning, nick. first of all, obviously the conservatives wa nt to all, obviously the conservatives want to get on with the next phase of theircampaign, want to get on with the next phase of their campaign, what they have got planned for today, but how much has that been distracted from by reaction to what they did last night in rebranding that twitter account? i think there is definitely a big i’ow i think there is definitely a big row over it, the question is how long it lasts. certainly other opposition parties have been scathing of what the conservatives did last night. their argument is it was clear if you look at their twitter handle that it was from conservative party hq, but if you we re conservative party hq, but if you were just flicking through twitter it did look like it was supposed to be an independent, fact checking service, which it clearly was not. it was claiming that borisjohnson won the debate, backing up the conservatives‘ policy. we heard this

morning from the foreign secretary dominic raab and he was defending it. i knock on doors every day and i have been to the midlands yesterday and down south and nobody gives a toss about the social media cut and thrust. what they care about is the substance of the issues and there are huge amounts of claims about all politicians. we are not going to deal with the knots has put about by labour. this is not a mistake in your view? it is the cut and thrust of debate and when you are in the conservative' position, everyone has agoat conservative' position, everyone has a go at the tories, we should be rebutting the nonsense that is put out about us. that is the tory defence. but when you look at the clips, the one that really stuck out from last night in terms of boris johnson was the audience laughing when he was talking about trust. i wonder if this kind of feeds into that debate and if we might hear a

bit more from opposition parties on that throughout the day. we have heard this morning from the lib dems who are asking the electoral commission to look into the conservative approach to the twitter account. i found myself caught out by another twitter handle the other day that was pretending to be britain elects, and it is so easy. twitter is a fast moving, you look quickly at your feet and you tend to look at the name rather than scrutinising the twitter handle. should they be reported to the electoral commission? twitter should have stopped the account. i reported them and blocked them as soon as i saw it and this needs to be reported to the electoral commission. away from that discussion, what other parties up to today?|j from that discussion, what other parties up to today? i wasjust having a look at the map and it is often hard having a look at the map and it is often ha rd to having a look at the map and it is often hard to tell where you are on the campaign trail. we are just

outside leeds with borisjohnson and he is trying to talk aboutjustice again today. that was his big issue yesterday. it is a key theme for the tories throughout this campaign. labour are continuing with their key theme, austerity. some ofjeremy corbyn‘s colleagues are out campaigning to reverse the damage of austerity, as they put it. the big event today is the lib dem manifesto launch this afternoon. we will be hearing exactly what their plans are, the things they are prioritising. the big one we have talked about so far this morning is education, pledging 20,000 new teachers in england if they win power. we will hear a bit more about exactly how that will be paid for this afternoon. we know the lib dems think that by staying in the eu there will be a big boost to the economy. a lot of their spending is based on that. the snp are talking
9:10 am
about their spending after brexit, nicola sturgeon out in dundee this afternoon, so another busy day on the campaign trail. but the fallout from that debate last night and that issue of trust on social media, i would not be surprised if we were talking about that later. that would not be surprised at all. thank you very much, nick. the liberal democrats have vowed to increase teachers‘ pay in england by at least 3% each year over the course of the next parliament. the party says the pledge, which will be announced at the party‘s manifesto launch later today, will come out of the £50 billion the party says it will save by cancelling brexit. if you haven‘t registered to vote already, or if you want to vote by post, there are only a few days left to apply. you can see the guide on our website, or you can get information on the bbc news app.

9:12 am
thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us this morning. give us the thoughts of yourself and the supporters who are part of the trust. we are pleased an appointment has been made quickly. yesterday‘s news was a shock and i think quite a lot of supporters were quite sad that mauricio pochettino had been sacked by the board. we know the results have not been great for a while and there had been rumours going around for awhile that all was not well. but over the last five yea rs not well. but over the last five years there has been a real connection between the fans and the tea m connection between the fans and the team in the style of football we play. we had some great times under him. as soon as the news came through, the first thing people said was, what is the plan? we have got an important game coming up the weekend. the board at the club has moved quickly to get a new person in. that will be the positive news. what fans want to hear is how the board see themselves as working with
9:13 am
jose mourinho over the next few yea rs. jose mourinho over the next few years. the worry amongst some fans is that he has got a reputation for a particular way of working at a particular way of acting in the tra nsfer particular way of acting in the transfer market and dealing with the youth club which has not been what we have been doing for the past few yea rs. we have been doing for the past few years. it would be good to get information from the board about how they see that going forward. how will they back their man? he is a big character, so will it be fair to say that you await the next response and the next moves with a sense of caution perhaps? we are supporters so in the end the supporters are behind their team and they want the best for their team. everybody wants the best for their team, it is a cliche. you have to go into it with an open mind and you hope it goes well. jose mourinho is a big character and it is a big club and supporters expect things, so we will have to see what goes on. we need a

bit more information. we do not want to get to a situation a year and a half down the line where we have a similar problem with a perceived conflict between the board and the manager or the manager and the dressing room. every part of the clu b dressing room. every part of the club has an influence on how well the club does, so we want to know how it will be done going forward. do you feel that mauricio pochettino simply was not given enough time to get the club out of a slightly fallow period, or where there are other factors at play? there is a feeling amongst some fans that this was the first sustained problem period we have had in the five years he had been in charge. it is only right to have time to turn it around. equally there are a number of people who said it was not happening, our domestic form away from home has not been good and the football has not been as good to watch for some time. jose mourinho
9:15 am
has had a go at every club he has been at. but there was a huge amount of goodwill for mauricio pochettino and the coaching staff. everybody recognises he got us to punch above our weight recognises he got us to punch above ourweight in recognises he got us to punch above our weight in the last five years. given that goodwill and the feeling amongst a significant number of supporters that he was pushed out too soon, does that extra pressure onjose mourinho too soon, does that extra pressure on jose mourinho mean too soon, does that extra pressure onjose mourinho mean he has to come up onjose mourinho mean he has to come up with the goods or there will be less patience for him? that is the only conclusion we can draw, so that means it would be good to hear from the club board how they see it working and how they will back their man. good to hear from you. good to hear from you. the headlines on bbc news... borisjohnson and jeremy corbyn face a sceptical audience in the first election debate as they‘re pushed on brexit, the nhs, and honesty.
