given to newsnight. we are just hearing from barclays that it is pulling out of pitch@palace, one of the schemes that prince andrew runs. they say in light of the current situation they have informed pitch@palace that going forward they will no longer be participating in the programme. that isjust through from barclays. it is very nearly time for the film review, but first a quick look ahead to sportsday... coming up on bbc news, the draw for the euro play—off spot has been taken, with the euro play—off spot has been ta ken, with scotland the euro play—off spot has been taken, with scotland drawing israel. if they win that either serbia or norway will stand in their way for a place to next summer's tournament. northern ireland and the republic of ireland already knew their opponents but will play each other in belfast if they win their respective semifinals. more on all of that coming up on bbc news later this evening, but now it is time for the film review...
5:46 pm
hello and a warm welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is mark kermode. hello, mark. something for everyone. harriet, a true story of bravery. some come here we go again. and 21 bridges, crime thriller. and earworm all day, let it go. i am hoping you are going to tell me that harriet is really good... it is really good. a story about former slave turned abolitionist harriet tubman. cynthia erivo is the women who escaped slavery, makes her own way to philadelphia, connects with the underground railway, and he can't believe she has made this journey pretty much on her own steam. this
5:47 pm
isa clip... so where are the others? there are no others. well, you know you can trust me. i'm a friend. who did you make the journey with? i left my husband and family. just me and the lord. well, i don't know if you know how extraordinary this is, but by some miraculous means you have made it 100 miles to freedom, all by yourself. would you like to pick a new name? to mark your freedom. most ex—slaves do. any name you want. they called my mamma rit, but her name harriet. i want my mamma's name, and my husband. harriet tubman.
5:48 pm
wow. you really have to remember that cynthia erivo as british as well. remarkable. it is a brilliant performance. the tag line is be free 01’ performance. the tag line is be free or die. there has been talk of a harriet tubman biopic for quite a long time, i think since 20 years ago. it is a really inspirational story. she is terrific in the title role. it is very well directed. and the director and the writer, gregory allen howard, they do a good job of taking a complex historical story and pressing it into something that works as a really adventurous, engrossing narrative on screen. on the one hand you have the grit and the one hand you have the grit and the horror of the story. in the way the horror of the story. in the way the film is shot, you get... i remember with 12 years a slave there was always the thing about the beauty of the landscape against the horror of what is happening and you get that here and you get the slightly mystical element. she has had an injury to her head which causes painting but she seems to have almost a hotline to the almighty and it plays with that really well, but the most impressive thing about it, it manages to tell
5:49 pm
an historical story in a way which is really dramatic, really engrossing, and assumes you wouldn't know anything about this story before hand and does so in a way that i think a mainstream audience could completely embrace, and i think it is a really, really well made film and a really engrossing story, and it is great to see the story, and it is great to see the story told on the big screen. fantastic, really looking forward to that. bill—mac, just can't stop singing it, all the time. 0k, that. bill—mac, just can't stop singing it, all the time. ok, this picks up a few years after the first film, elsie is a strange song calling her to the north, the forest. olav has drawn up and is dealing with some of the problems of maturity. all the stuff you would expect, spectacular visuals, water, ice, we have some absolutely belting songs, into the unknown up there to some extent with let it go. i have no doubt this will be a runaway
5:50 pm
smash and i have no doubt it will find a very sympathetic audience because we know and love these characters and we have so much invested and you can hear a big but coming but the thing is from my point of view, you remember when toy story 2 came out and people were thinking, it is actually better than toy story? godfather 2, and you think, it is actually better than godfather, but frozen 2, it is fine, but the thing is that when i saw the first one ijust but the thing is that when i saw the first one i just thought, but the thing is that when i saw the first one ijust thought, this is so magical, and, you know, i had no expectations, just thought it was so magical, thrilling, and i have no doubt this will score a home run with its audiences, but what it doesn't do, and i know it is asking a lot, but what it doesn't do is ta ke a lot, but what it doesn't do is take it to the next level. what it does, it feels like, ok, this is really successful, you'd would like to spend time with these characters again and we would like to repeat that box office bonanza, here frozen 2. so it is fine. they are not going to put that on the poster, are they?
5:51 pm
it's fine! what do they care about what a 57—year—old bloke thinks? i'm sure it is fine with a target audience, but i wanted it to be the godfather ii. we don't have time... 0k, godfather ii. we don't have time... ok, 21 bridges. yes, reputation for shooting bad guys, and a narcotics cop, comedy meet up in the wake of a crime that has gone wrong and a number of policemen have been shot and they decide to shut down manhattan by closing the... 21 bridges! then they have to pursue who they think are the two subsites including a quite breathtaking chase sequence. including a quite breathtaking chase sequence. here's clip... here's a clip... don't shoot, don't shoot! dramatic music
5:52 pm
0h, oh, its tens. 0h, its tens. when you see that you immediately think of french connection, chasing on and off the train and the film of easily refers back to those 70s films, and it doesn't have the grit or the depth of serpico are french connection, but it does have a very cliched hard—boiled dialogue, but it does have a very cliched ha rd—boiled dialogue, absolute but it does have a very cliched hard—boiled dialogue, absolute nuts and bolts plot in the beginning to stop something to do, limited amount of time to do it, the bridges can only be closed until 5am, we have to catch these two people. almost set up catch these two people. almost set up like when you think of something like the warriors, very simple setup. we have to do this on a limited period of time. but what i
5:53 pm
liked about it, for me it was an a—list b—movie. we spoke about black and blue, and it is like the same thing. the dialogue in this is so ripe you can actually smell it, but it is fine because you think, ok, it's a b—movie, but itjust happens to be being played by very fine performers and is directed with an efficiency and enthusiasm for the genre, and i like a 70s inflected crime thriller. not making any claims for it being great but i really enjoyed it as a good nuts and bolts thriller. there is a twist in it you see coming a mile away, but that's absolutely fine because it knows what it is and it does what it is efficiently. doesn't have any great depth but then, frankly, it doesn't need any. it is honest! exactly, and honest thriller. and a rerelease. .. yes, i love exactly, and honest thriller. and a rerelease... yes, i love ken russell, i think he is the great british post—war film—making talent.
5:54 pm
tommy is extraordinary. it is based on the who's rock opera but he was interested in films about false messiahs, twisted religions, russell was. brilliant songs, as we know. it has a range of completely crazy performances including famously eltonjohn as the pinball wizard. you haven't seen it, have you? such an embarrassment! you need to see it. the only place you could see it with a proper sound mix was in leicester square. i was five! everybody else who sought at the cinema site with a bad sound mix but 110w cinema site with a bad sound mix but now it is back in the cinema with a proper sound mix so you can enjoy it for the first time the way ken russell wanted you to experience it. it isa russell wanted you to experience it. it is a thrilling treat and i think you should embrace that moment. it is a thrilling treat and i think you should embrace that momentlj will. you should embrace that moment.” will. that is the joy of a rerelease. and a quick thought on dvd this week? i did this with in mind. annabel comes home. firstly of
5:55 pm
all the annabelle movies it is the onei all the annabelle movies it is the one i love the most and i chose it —— annabelle comes home. it is not very scary. it has nice characters we can empathise with and enjoy. it is like a roller—coaster funfair ride. thrilling but not disturbing. it's just... it is like a weigh thrilling but not disturbing. it'sjust... it is like a weigh in. you haven't heard how much i swear ona you haven't heard how much i swear on a roller—coaster. it's not pretty! i am going to get you to like horror movies. this is going to happen. this is a very good way in. it is fine. a little bit, you know, but nothing deeply disturbing. scary enough to count as a horror genre, however? but not scary enough to disturb you or give you nightmares. 0k. well, disturb you or give you nightmares. ok. well, something for everyone. exactly as you say. i'm afraid that harriet is top of my list. you will really like it, it is really worth saying. thank you very much, see you next time. thank you for being with us. next time. thank you for being with us. enjoy your cinema going.

bye— bye! hello. the number of flood warnings we have seen hello. the number of flood warnings we have seen across hello. the number of flood warnings we have seen across england in recent days has been falling but that trend may end as we look at the weather picture tonight and into saturday as well with further heavy rain around, quite likely to see the risk of further localised flooding building in. initial concerns, then come across parts of south—west england and southern wales, where over the hills a couple of inches of rain, 40—50 millimetres... sound loss (1730 nc bulletin)
